Transformation of “living” carbocationic polymerization of styrene and isobutene to controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is described and formation of the corresponding AB and ABA block copolymers with styrene (St), methyl methacrylate (MMA, methyl acrylate (MA) and isobornyl acrylate (IBA) was demonstrated. A similar approach was applied to the cationic ring opening polymerization of tetrahydrofuran leading to the AB and ABA block copolymers with St, MMA and MA using ATRP. Site transformation approach was also used for the ring opening metathesis polymerization of norbornene and polycondensation systems using polysulfone as an example. In both cases, AB and ABA block copolymers were efficiently formed with styrene and acrylates.  相似文献

Hydroxy‐telechelic poly(methyl methacrylate)s of molecular weights below 5000 were obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate followed by end‐capping with allyl alcohol via atom transfer radical addition (ATRA). As initiators for the ATRP, monofunctional initiators with an additional hydroxy group in the molecule or bifunctional initiators were employed. The successful synthesis of the hydroxy‐telechelic PMMA was proved by determination of their molecular weight using MALDI‐TOF‐MS. The efficiency of the end‐capping reaction was determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy using the allyl N‐(4‐tolyl)carbamate as end‐capping agent. Block copolymers comprising a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block and a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) block were prepared by ATRP using a macroinitiator on the PEO basis. The dormant species of the macroinitiator consists of the phenyl chloroacetate moiety which shows a high rate of initiation. The successful synthesis of the poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) was proved by 1H NMR spectroscopy; the ratios of EO/MMA repeating units in the feed and the copolymer were nearly equal.  相似文献

A new series of 1,1,3,3‐tetraethylisoindoline‐2‐oxyl (TEISO)‐based alkoxyamines was prepared. The half‐lives for thermal dissociation indicated that the most sterically congested cumyl‐TEISO alkoxymine had the greatest potential as an initiator for the polymerization of monomers at lower temperatures. The polymerization of styrene at 110 °C gave a linear evolution of Mn with conversion in the early stages. Further evidence for the “living” nature was given by the polydispersities of the polymers that remained low (Mw/Mn = 1.13–1.27) throughout the polymerization (up to 80% conversion). No polymer was formed for the styrene system in a reasonable time below 100 °C. High‐performance liquid chromatographic/mass spectrometric investigations of the distribution of trapped oligomers containing one to nine monomer units formed at 60 °C revealed that the trapping of oligomeric cumyl–styryl radicals by TEISO is irreversible at this temperature. Methyl methacrylate polymerized with cumyl‐TEISO at 60–70 °C, although the initial high rates of polymerization soon decreased to zero at low conversions (10–15%), and the high polydispersities (Mw/Mn = 1.42–1.73) indicated significant side reactions. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Free radical ring-opening polymerization of 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (MDP) in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy free radical (TEMPO) has been achieved to afford a chain polyester (PMDP) with di-t-butyl peroxide (DTBP) as an initiator at 125°C. The polydispersity of the polymers decreases as the concentration of TEMPO is increased. At high TEMPO concentrations, the polydispersity as low as 1.2 was obtained, which is below the theoretical lower limit for a conventional free radical polymerization. A linear relationship between the number-average molecular weight (Mn) and the monomer conversion was observed with the best-fit line passing very close to the origin of the Mn-conversion plot. The isolated and purified TEMPO-capped PMDP polymers have been employed to prepare chain extended polymers upon addition of more MDP monomer. These results are suggestive of the “living” polymerization process. A possible polymerization mechanism might involve thermal homolysis of the TEMPO-PMDP bonds followed by the addition of the monomers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A general method for the transformation of “living” carbocationic into “living” radical polymerization, without any modification of chain ends, is reported for the preparation of ABA block copolymers. For example, α,ω-difunctional polyisobutene, capped with several units of styrene, Cl-St-PIB-St-Cl, prepared cationically (Mn = 7800, Mw/Mn = 1.31) was used as an efficient difunctional macroinitiator for homogeneous “living” atom transfer radical polymerization to prepare triblock copolymers with styrene, PSt-PIB-PSt (Mn = 28,800, Mw/Mn = 1.14), methyl acrylate, PMA-PIB-PMA (Mn = 31,810, Mw/Mn = 1.42), isobornyl acrylate, PIBA-PIB-PIBA (Mn = 33,500, Mw/Mn = 1.21), and methyl methacrylate, PMMA-PIB-PMMA (Mn = 33,500, Mw/Mn = 1.47). © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two tertiary amines with a chemical structure rather similar to dimethyl-4-toluidine have been prepared and tested as activators for the free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate. 4-Dimethylaminobenzyl alcohol, DMOH, was synthesized by reduction of the corresponding benzaldehyde. 4-Dimethylaminobenzyl methacrylate, DMMO, was synthesized by condensation of methacryloyl chloride with DMOH in the presence of triethylamine as catalyst. Kinetic studies of the bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the redox system BPO–amine have been carried out by differential scanning calorimetry at different temperatures in the interval 30–40°C. An increase of the overall rate constant, k, with increasing temperature was observed for all redox systems. The system BPO/DMT gave the highest values of k. The polymerizations catalyzed by DMOH and DMMO respectively gave lower values of the overall Arrhenius activation than that obtained with DMT. DMMO may participate in the polymerization not only as activator but also as an acrylic derivative which can be incorporated into the polymeric growing chains during the propagation step of the free radical polymerization. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The facile and efficient one‐pot synthesis of monodisperse, highly crosslinked, and “living” functional copolymer microspheres by the ambient temperature iniferter‐induced “living” radical precipitation polymerization (ILRPP) is described for the first time. The simple introduction of iniferter‐induced “living” radical polymerization (ILRP) mechanism into precipitation polymerization system, together with the use of ethanol solvent, allows the direct generation of such uniform functional copolymer microspheres. The polymerization parameters (including monomer loading, iniferter concentration, molar ratio of crosslinker to monovinyl comonomer, and polymerization time and scale) showed much influence on the morphologies of the resulting copolymer microspheres, thus permitting the convenient tailoring of the particle sizes by easily tuning the reaction conditions. In particular, monodisperse poly(4‐vinylpyridine‐co‐ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) microspheres were prepared by the ambient temperature ILRPP even at a high monomer loading of 18 vol %. The general applicability of the ambient temperature ILRPP was confirmed by the preparation of uniform copolymer microspheres with incorporated glycidyl methacrylate. Moreover, the “livingness” of the resulting polymer microspheres was verified by their direct grafting of hydrophilic polymer brushes via surface‐initiated ILRP. Furthermore, a “grafting from” particle growth mechanism was proposed for ILRPP, which is considerably different from the “grafting to” particle growth mechanism in the traditional precipitation polymerization. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbocationic polymerization is strongly affected by medium and salt present in the system. The increase of solvent polarity enhances overall rates of cationic polymerization because it increases the proportion of carbocations in equilibrium with dormant covalent species. Higher solvent polarity might also increase molecular weights due to the reduction of transfer to counterions and may broaden polydispersity by slowing down an exchange between active and dormant species. Added salts may increase the proportion of ionic species by the ionic strength effect. The salts with common ions suppress free ions and lead to a monomodal molecular weight distribution by eliminating free ionic species with long lifetimes. The addition of tetrabutylammonium salts in the polymerization of styrene, initiated by 1-phenylethyl chloride and catalyzed by tin tetrachloride is a typical example. The special salt effect based on exchange of counterions may enhance or reduce the proportion of ionic species and may accelerate the exchange between active and dormant species, affecting the polymerization rates and polydispersities.  相似文献

This paper describes the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers composed of an ionic poly(styrenesulfonate) first segment and a hydrophobic polystyrene second one, using TEMPO-mediated “living” radical polymerization. These copolymers proved to be efficient stabilizers in the emulsion polymerization of styrene.  相似文献

A novel polyurethane iniferter, synthesized from equal moles of toluene diisocyanate and 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2-ethanediol, was used to polymerize acrylonitrile to assess whether it proceeded via a “living” radical polymerization mechanism. From the kinetic results, the rate of polymerization could be expressed as Rpα[BPT]0.96[AN]1.64. The increase of number-average molecular weight with increase of both conversion and polymerization time, the bimodal molecular weight distribution in gel permeation chromatography and the increase of molecular weight in the post-polymerization of polyacrylonitrile confirm that the present tetraphenylethane-based polyurethane iniferter follows a “living” radical polymerization mechanism. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of trialkyl and triaryl organometallic radicals from group IV generated by hydrogen abstraction by tert‐butoxyl radical from the parent hydrides have been examined using laser flash photolysis. The rate constants for the trapping of the metal‐centered radicals by the persistent radical TEMPO were measured and were found to be large and similar to those of the carbon‐centered radical systems, yet below the diffusion controlled limit. The metal‐centered radicals were found to be efficiently trapped by TEMPO and would appear to be candidates suitable for “living” free radical polymerization similar to carbon analogue stoichiometric initiators. The radical trapping rate constants for the trialkyl series (M = Si, Ge, Sn) were found to be 8.9 × 108 M−1 s−1 (M = Si), 7.2 × 108 M−1 s−1 (M = Ge), and 6.2 × 108 M−1 s−1 (M = Sn), respectively. The triaryl (Ph3M•) series gave slightly slower rates of 1.6 × 108 M−1 s−1 (M = Si), 3.4 × 108 M−1 s−1 (M = Ge), and 1.9 × 107 M−1 s−1 (M = Sn), respectively. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The living low temperature polymerization in polar solvents of most methacrylates, even functional ones, can now be performed by direct and experimentally convenient anionic methods, thanks to the use of α-methylstyrene and of complex-purified monomers. A diversified family of block copolymers has thus been generated, that are used as compatibilizing agents in the designing of interesting heterophase materials: i.e. blends of polymers and inorganic fillers, and liquid-solid dispersions. The living polymerization of acrylates (or of methacrylates under more drastic conditions) raises additional requirements: they have been met to a large extent by the use of specific ligands of the growing ion-pair. Resulting structures such as f.i. block copolymers and end-functionalized oligomers of a low dispersity, should have a great interest in the molecular engineering of (meth)acrylate-based products. Finally, these new initiators lend themselves to structural and mechanistic studies which should shed some light on the critical features of these living propagation processes.  相似文献

Cationic substitutionally inert cyclometalated ruthenium (II) and osmium (II) complexes, ([Mt(o‐C6H4‐2‐py)(LL)2]PF6), where LL‐1,10‐phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2′‐bipyridine (bipy), were used for radical polymerization of styrene. Gradual modification of the complexes within the series allowed comparison of the catalytic activity and the redox properties. There was no correlation between the reducing powers of the complexes and their catalytic activities. The osmium compound of the lowest reduction potential was not active. All the ruthenium complexes catalyzed the polymerization of styrene in a controlled manner; but the level of control and the catalytic activity were different under the same polymerization conditions. [Ru(o‐C6H4‐2‐py)(phen)2]PF6 demonstrated the best catalytic performance though its redox potential was the highest. It catalyzed the “living” polymerization with a reasonable rate at a catalyst‐to‐initiator ratio of 0.1. 1 equiv. of Al(OiPr)3 accelerated the polymerization and improved the control, but higher amount of Al(OiPr)3 did not speed up the polymerization and moved the process into the uncontrollable regime. Under the most optimal conditions, the controlled polymerization occurs fast without any additive and the catalyst degradation. Added free ligands inhibited the polymerization suggesting that the catalytically active ruthenium intermediates are generated via the reversible dechelation of bidentate phen or bipy ligands. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The first synthesis of asymmetric dendritic‐linear‐dendritic ABC block copolymers, that contain a linear B block and dissimilar A and C dendritic fragments is reported. Third generation poly(benzyl ether) monodendrons having benzyl alcohol moiety at their “focal” point were activated by quantitative titration with organometallic anions and the resulting alkoxides were used as initiators in the “living” ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The reaction proceeded in controlled fashion at 40–50 °C affording linear‐dendritic AB block copolymers with predictable molecular weights (Mw = 6000–13,000) and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.02–1.04). The propagation process was monitored by size‐exclusion chromatography with multiple detection. The resulting “living” copolymers were terminated by reaction either with HCl/tetrahydrofuran or with a reactive monodendron that differed from the initiating dendron not only in size, but also in chemical composition. The asymmetric triblock copolymers follow a peculiar structure‐induced self‐assembly pattern in block‐selective solvents as evidenced by size‐exclusion chromatography in combination with multi‐angle light scattering. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes for the first time the development of a new polymerization technique by introducing iniferter‐induced “living” radical polymerization mechanism into precipitation polymerization and its application in the molecular imprinting field. The resulting iniferter‐induced “living” radical precipitation polymerization (ILRPP) has proven to be an effective approach for generating not only narrow disperse poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) microspheres but also molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) microspheres with obvious molecular imprinting effects towards the template (a herbicide 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D)), rather fast template rebinding kinetics, and appreciable selectivity over structurally related compounds. The binding association constant Ka and apparent maximum number Nmax for the high‐affinity sites of the 2,4‐D imprinted polymer were determined by Scatchard analysis and found to be 1.18 × 104 M?1 and 4.37 μmol/g, respectively. In addition, the general applicability of ILRPP in molecular imprinting was also confirmed by the successful preparation of MIP microspheres with another template (2‐chloromandelic acid). In particular, the living nature of ILRPP makes it highly useful for the facile one‐pot synthesis of functional polymer/MIP microspheres with surface‐bound iniferter groups, which allows their direct controlled surface modification via surface‐initiated iniferter polymerization and is thus of great potential in preparing advanced polymer/MIP materials. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A polymer consisting of a saturated carbon backbone with pendent acetylenic groups was prepared from monovinylacetylene. A titration was performed between the monomer and tertiary butyllithium, its lithiating agent. The charge transfer complex formed between the solvent THF and the tertiary butyllithium was used as an indicator of the unreacted butyllithium. Hence, a stoichiometric quantity of tertiary butyllithium was added dropwise to a solution of monovinylacetylene in THF to form lithiovinylacetylene. The addition of a slight excess of butyllithium led to the polymerization of the lithiated monomer. The obtained polymer was reprotonated and characterized. This polymerization was evaluated as a possible route to synthesize poly(vinylacetylene) with processable molecular weights, for its application as a potential carbon fiber precursor. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Well‐defined macromolecular brushes with poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) side chains on random copolymer backbones were synthesized by “grafting from” approach based on click chemistry and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. To prepare macromolecular brushes, two linear random copolymers of 2‐(trimethylsilyloxy)ethyl methacrylate (HEMA‐TMS) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) (poly(MMA‐co‐HEMA‐TMS)) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization and were subsequently derivated to azide‐containing polymers. Novel alkyne‐terminated RAFT chain transfer agent (CTA) was grafted to polymer backbones by copper‐catalyzed 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition (azide‐alkyne click chemistry), and macro‐RAFT CTAs were obtained. PNIPAM side chains were prepared by RAFT polymerization. The macromolecular brushes have well‐defined structures, controlled molecular weights, and molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≦ 1.23). The RAFT polymerization of NIPAM exhibited pseudo‐first‐order kinetics and a linear molecular weight dependence on monomer conversion, and no detectable termination was observed in the polymerization. The macromolecular brushes can self‐assemble into micelles in aqueous solution. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 443–453, 2010  相似文献
