The polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the redox system K2S2O8-citric acid catalyzed by Ag+ ion has been studied over the temperature range 35–50°C. The rate of polymerization is proportional to the square root of peroxydisulfate concentration. The initial rate increases with increasing citric acid concentration, but at relatively higher concentration of citric acid the rate decreases. The rate of polymerization also increases with increasing monomer concentration and temperature. The overall activation energy calculated from the Arrhenius plot was found to be 4.6 kcal/mole. On the basis of the observation, a suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed for the reaction.  相似文献

The polymerization of acrylamide initiated by an ascorbic acid–peroxydisulfate redox system was studied in aqueous solution at 35 ± 0.2°C in the presence of air. The concentrations studied were [monomer] = (2.0–15.0) × 10?2 mole/liter; [peroxydisulfate] = (1.5–10.0) × 10?3 mole/liter; and [ascorbic acid] = (2.84–28.4) × 10?4 mole/liter; temperatures were between 25–50°C. Within these ranges the initial rate showed a half-order dependence on peroxydisulfate, a first-order dependence on an initial monomer concentration, and a first-order dependence on a low concentration of ascorbic acid [(2.84–8.54) × 10?4 mole/liter]. At higher concentrations of ascorbic acid the rate remained constant in the concentration range (8.54–22.72) × 10?4 mole/liter, then varied as an inverse halfpower at still higher concentrations of ascorbic acid [(22.72–28.4) × 10?4 mole/liter]. The initial rate increased with an increase in polymerization temperature. The overall energy of activation was 12.203 kcal/mole in a temperature range of 25–50°C. Water-miscible organic solvents depressed the initial rate and the limiting conversion. The viscometric average molecular weight increased with an increase in temperature and initial monomer concentration but decreased with increasing concentration of peroxydisulfate and an additive, dimethyl formamide (DMF).  相似文献

The aqueous polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the bromate-thiourea redox system in dilute HC1 has been investigated under nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing concentration of thiourea in the range 5 × 10?3?10 × 10?3 M. The percentage of conversion increases with increasing concentration of the catalyst, but beyond 1.5 × 10?2 M, there is a decreasing trend in the rate of polymerization. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing monomer concentration, but beyond 0.184 M the polymerization rate decreases due to gel effect. The rate of polymerization increases with temperature up to 35°C and beyond 40°C a decreasing trend is noticed. The effect of water miscible organic solvents, certain neutral salts on the rate of polymerization has also been investigated.  相似文献

Heterogeneous polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by ceric ammonium sulfate–citric acid (C.A.) redox system is reported at 35 ± 0.2°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of monomer disappearance is found to be proportional to [C.A.]0, [Ce4+]0.63, and [Monomer]1.59. The rate of ceric ion disappearance is directly proportional to ceric ion concentration but independent of monomer concentration. The initial rate was independent of [H2SO4]. The molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile increases with increasing monomer concentration and decreasing ceric ion concentration. Activation energy was found to be 27.9 kJ/mol.  相似文献

The aqueous polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the redox system K2S2O8-ascorbic acid has been studied at 35°C under the influence of oxygen. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing ascorbic acid concentration at low activator concentration, remains constant within the range 4.375 × 10?3 to 11.25 × 10?3 mole/liter, and at higher ascorbic acid concentration again decreases. The rate varies linearly with monomer concentration. The initial rate and the limiting conversion increase with increasing polymerization temperature. Organic solvents (water-miscible only) and small amounts of neutral salts like KC1 and Na2SO4 depress the initial rate and the maximum conversion. The addition of small amounts of salts like Cu2+ and Mn2+ increases the initial rate, but no appreciable increase in the limiting conversion is observed.  相似文献

The aqueous polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by an acidified bromate–thiourea redox system has been studied under nitrogen atmosphere. The rate of polymerization is independent of thiourea concentration over the range 2–9 × 10?3M and reaches maximum at 9 × 10?3M. The rate varies linearly with [monomer]. The initial rate of polymerization as well as the maximum conversion increases within the range of 4–22.5 × 10?3M KBrO3, but beyond 22.5 × 10?3M the rate of polymerization decreases. The initial rate and the limiting conversion increases with increasing polymerization temperature in the range 30–45°C; and beyond 45°C they decrease. The effect of certain neutral salts, water-soluble solvents, and micelles of cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants on the rate of polymerization has been investigated.  相似文献

The polymerization of acrylonitrile was carried out using peroxydiphosphate-cyclohexanol redox system in the presence of silver ion. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing peroxydiphosphate concentration and the initiator exponent was computed to be 0.5. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing monomer concentration and the monomer exponent was computed to be unity. The plot of Rp vs [Ag+]1/2 was linear, indicating 0.5 order with respect to [Ag+]. The reaction was carried out at three different temperatures and the overall activation energy was calculated to be 7.60 kcal/mol. The effect of certain surfactants on the rate of polymerization has been investigated and a suitable kinetic scheme has been pictured.  相似文献

The kinetics of free-radical copolymerization and terpolymerization of acrylamide (AAm), N, N′-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBA) and methacrylic acid (MA) in the inverse water/monomer/cyclohexane/Tween 85 miniemulsion was investigated. Polymerizable sterically-stable miniemulsions were formulated in cyclohexane as a continuous medium. Polymerizations are very fast and reach the final conversion within several minutes. The dependence of the polymerization rate vs. conversion is described by a curve with two nonstationary rate intervals. The maximum rate of polymerization slightly increases with increasing concentration of crosslinking monomer (MBA) and strongly decreases by the addition of MA. The rate of polymerization is inversely proportional to the 0.9 th and 1.8 th power of the particle concentration without and with MA, respectively. The number of polymer particles is inversely proportional to the 0.18 th and 0.13 th power of MBA concentration. The kinetic and colloidal parameters of the miniemulsion polymerization are discussed in terms of microemulsion polymerization model.  相似文献

The aqueous polymerization of acrylic acid and acrylamide initiated by peroxydiphosphate–sodium thiosulfate redox system was investigated within the temperature range of 25–35°C. The rates of polymerization were measured at different concentrations of oxidant, activator and monomer. The monomer and the initiator exponents were evaluated to be 1.12 and 0.51. The rate of polymerization decreases with increasing thiosulfate concentration. On the basis of the experimental observation of the dependence of the rate of polymerization, Rp, on various variables, a suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed and the rate parameters have been evaluated.  相似文献

Kinetics of polymerization of acrylamide initiated by Thallium(III) perchlorate was investigated in aqueous perchloric acid medium in the temperature range of 55–70°C. The rates of polymerization were measured varying the concentration of the monomer, initiator, and perchloric acid. The rate of polymerization was found to increase with increase of temperature, monomer concentration, initiator concentration, and perchloric acid concentration. The effect of additives like different solvents, surfactants, and retarders on the rate of polymerization was studied. Molecular weights of the polymer were determined by viscometry. The chain transfer constants for the monomer (CM) and that for the solvent dioxan (Cs) were calculated to be 7.33 × 10?3 and 6.66 × 10?3, respectively. From the Arrhenius plot, the overall activation energy (Ea) was calculated to be 10.68 kcal/mol. The energy of initiation was calculated to be 12.36 kcal/mol. Depending on the results obtained, a suitable reaction mechanism has been suggested and a rate equation has been derived.  相似文献

The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto silk fibers initiated by the ferric chloride-eysteine redox system has been investigated in aqueous medium. The rate of grafting was calculated by varying the concentrations of monomer, initiator, acidity of the medium, cysteine, and temperature. The percentage of grafting increases with an increase of Fe3+ concentration up to 2,5 × 10?3 mol/L and thereafter it decreases. The graft yield increases steadily upon increasing the monomer concentration. The graft yield also increases with increasing cysteine concentration up to 0.5 × 10?3 mol/L and then decreases. The effect of the perchloric acid concentration, temperature, solvents, and certain neutral salts on graft yield has also been investigated and a suitable reaction scheme has been proposed.  相似文献

The polymerization of vinyl stearate in aqueous emulsions with a non-ionic emulsifying agent and potassium peroxydisulfate as initiator has been investigated by use of a dilatometric method to follow the reaction. In general, the reaction kinetics do not follow the pattern established for styrene. Variation of initiator concentration produced latices containing approximately equal numbers of latex particles, even though the rate of reaction was almost directly proportional to the peroxydisulfate concentration. For a given initiator and monomer concentration polymerization occurs very slowly when the monomer is completely solubilized but as the number of micelles is reduced and the number of emulsion droplets increased, the rate increases to an optimum value, whereafter it decreases. A mechanism is proposed by which the sparsely soluble vinyl stearate reacts and redistributes itself into latex particles of a different size range from the micelles and emulsion droplets originally present.  相似文献

Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) terminated polyacrylamide was obtained by using the EDTA–cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate [Ce(IV)] redox initiator in the aqueous polymerization of acrylamide. The polymerization behaviors as a function of the concentration of Ce(IV), EDTA, and acrylamide as well as temperature were studied. The consumption rate of cerium(IV) depends a first-order reaction on the ceric ion concentration ([Ce(IV)]). The complex formation constant (K) and disproportionation constant (kd) of Ce(IV)–EDTA chelated complex are 1.67 × 104 and 3.77 × 10?3, respectively. The rate dependences of polymerization on monomer concentration and EDTA concentration both follow a second-order reaction in the run of initial monomer concentration ([M]i) equal to 0.2 mol dm?3. The number average molecular weight increases linearly with the ratio of [M]i/[Ce(IV)]i. The mechanism and kinetics for the polymerization was proposed. The kinetic parameters involved were determined. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The polymerization of acrylamide initiated by the acidic permanganate–ascorbic acid redox pair has been studied in aqueous media at 30 ± 0.2°C in nitrogen atmosphere. The initial rate of polymerization has been found to be proportional to nearly the first power of the catalyst KMnO4 concentration within the range 6.0 × 10?3–14.0 × 10?3 mole/l. The rate is proportional to the first power of the monomer concentration within the range 4.00 × 10?2–12.0 × 10?2 mole/l. However, the rate of polymerization is independent of ascorbic acid concentration within the range 3.0 × 10?3–6.0 × 10?3 mole/l., but the further increase of the concentration depresses the rate of polymerization as well as maximum conversion. The initial rate increases but the maximum conversion decreases as the temperature is increased within the range 20–35°C. The overall energy of activation has been found to be 9.8 kcal/mole. The optimum amount of sulfuric acid is essential to initiate the polymerization but its presence in excess produces no effect either on the rate of reaction or the maximum conversion. Water-miscible organic solvents and salts, e.g., CH3OH, C2H5OH, (CH3)2CHOH, KCl, and Na2SO4, depress the rate. Slight amounts of MnSO4 · H2O and a complexing agent NaF increase the rate of polymerization. Cationic and anionic detergents have been found to decrease and increase the rate, respectively, while nonionic surfactants have no effect on the rate of polymerization.  相似文献

Vinyl chloride was polymerized at 59–92% of saturation pressure in a water-suspended system at 45–65°C with an emulsion poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) latex as a seed. A water-soluble initiator was used in various concentrations. The monomer was continuously charged as vapor from a storage vessel kept at lower temperature. Characterization included determination of molecular-weight distribution and degree of long-chain branching by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and viscometry, thermal dehydrochlorination, and microscopy. The polymerization rate decreases with decreasing pressure but is reasonable even at the lowest pressure. The molecular weight decreases with decreasing pressure and increasing initiator concentration and also with increasing polymerization temperature, if the initiator concentrations are chosen to give a constant initiator radical concentration. The degree of long-chain branching increases with increasing initiator concentration and decreasing monomer pressure but is unaffected by the polymerization temperature, if the initiator radical concentration is kept constant. The thermal stability decreases with decreasing M n, while the degree of long-chain branching has only a minor influence. The most important factor in the system influencing the molecular parameter is the monomer accessibility.  相似文献

Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto wool was investigated in aqueous solution using the potassium peroxy-diphosphate-thiourea redox system as the initiator. The rate of grafting was determined by varying the monomer, peroxydi-phosphate ion, temperature, and solvent. The graft yield increases with increasing peroxydiphosphate ion up to 80 × 10?-4 mol/L, and with further increase of peroxydiphosphate ion the graft yield decreases. The graft yield increases with increasing monomer concentration. The percentage of grafting decreases with increasing thiourea concentration. The rate of grafting increases with an increase of temperature. The effect of acid and water-soluble solvent and certain salts on graft yield has been investigated and a suitable rate expression has been derived.  相似文献

Aqueous gelatin (5%) is crosslinked in the presence of 0.040–0.020M peroxydisulfate at 70°C., but in 0.40M peroxydisulfate, gelatin initially is crosslinked and then redissolves to give a solution of reduced viscosity. The rate of crosslinking depends on the concentration of peroxydisulfate, the nature of peroxydisulfate's cation, and the pH range of the solution during crosslinking. Addition of silver ion to gelatin–peroxydisulfate solutions increases the rate of crosslinking, whereas addition of hydroquinone inhibits crosslinking. Further, induced decomposition of peroxydisulfate is observed in the presence of gelatin. Acetylated and esterified gelatins are crosslinked by aqueous peroxydisulfate, but the ability of deaminated gelatin to crosslink is greatly reduced. Crosslinking is believed to proceed via sulfate and hydroxyl free-radical attack of gelatin, with in situ generation of reactive intermediates that crosslink with other reactive sites in gelatin. Possible sites of crosslinking in gelatin have been suggested in light of viscosity data, chemical and amino acid analyses, and peroxydisulfate's known mode of decomposition.  相似文献

Abstract

Polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and acrylonitrile (AN) were carried out in aqueous nitric acid at 30°C with the redox initiator system ammonium ceric nitrate-ethyl cellosolve (EC). A short induction period was observed as well as the attainment of a limiting conversion for polymerization reactions. The consumption of ceric ion was first order with respect to Ce(IV) concentration in the concentration range (0.2–0.4) × 10?2 M, and the points at higher and lower concentrations show deviations from a linear fit. The plots of the inverse of pseudo-first-order rate constant for ceric ion consumption, (k 1)?1 vs [EC]?1, gave straight lines for both the monomer systems with nonzero intercepts supporting complex formation between Ce(IV) and EC. The rate of polymerization increases regularly with [Ce(IV)] up to 0.003 M, yielding an order of 0.41, then falls to 0.0055 M and again shows a rise at 0.00645 M for MMA polymerization. For AN polymerization, R p shows a steep rise with [Ce(IV)] up to 0.001 M, and beyond this concentration R p shows a regular increase with [Ce(IV)], yielding an order of 0.48. In the presence of constant [NO? 3], MMA and AN polymerizations yield orders of 0.36 and 0.58 for [Ce(IV)] variation, respectively. The rates of polymerization increased with an increase in EC and monomer concentrations: only at a higher concentration of EC (0.5 M) was a steep fall in R p observed for both monomer systems. The orders with respect to EC and monomer for MMA polymerization were 0.19 and 1.6, respectively. The orders with respect to EC and monomer for AN polymerization were 0.2 and 1.5, respectively. A kinetic scheme involving oxidation of EC by Ce(IV) via complex formation, whose decomposition gives rise to a primary radical, initiation, propagation, and termination of the polymeric radicals by biomolecular interaction is proposed. An oxidative termination of primary radicals by Ce(IV) is also included.  相似文献
