The non‐linear stability of plane parallel shear flows in an incompressible homogeneous fluid heated from below and saturating a porous medium is studied by the Lyapunov direct method. In the Oberbeck–Boussinesq–Brinkman (OBB) scheme, if the inertial terms are negligible, as it is widely assumed in literature, we find global non‐linear exponential stability (GNES) independent of the Reynolds number R. However, if these terms are retained, we find a restriction on R (depending on the inertial convective coefficient) both for a homogeneous fluid and a mixture heated and salted from below. In the case of a mixture, when the normalized porosity ε is equal to one, the laminar flows are GNES for small R and for heat Rayleigh numbers less than the critical Rayleigh numbers obtained for the motionless state. In this paper, we study the non‐linear stability of convection for a Newtonian fluid heated from below, where the viscosity of the fluid depends upon temperature. We are able to show that for Rayleigh numbers below a certain critical value, Rac, the rest state of the fluid and the steady temperature distribution remains non‐linearly stable, using the calculations of Diaz and Straughan (Continuum Mech. Thermodyn. 2004; 16 :347–352). The central contribution of this paper lies in a simpler proof of non‐linear stability, than the ones in the current literature, by use of a suitable maximum principle argument. We analyse the problem of finding instability thresholds and global non‐linear stability bounds for thermal convection in a linearly viscous fluid in a finite box. The vertical walls are maintained at different temperatures which gives rise to a non‐uniform temperature field in steady state. This problem was previously analysed by Georgescu and Mansutti (Int. J. Non‐Linear Mech. 1999; 34 :603–613). In our work we determine the linear instability threshold to be well above the global stability boundary found by an energy method. Since the perturbed system is not symmetric we expect this to be the case, and our analysis yields a parameter region where possible sub‐critical instabilities may be found. The Lyapunov direct method is used to study the non‐linear stability of parallel convective shear flows of a mixture heated and salted from below for any Schmidt and Prandtl numbers. Global non‐linear exponential stability for small values of Reynolds number R is found and conditional stability results up to the criticality which are independent of R are given for rigid and stress‐free boundaries. We show that non‐isolated from below 2‐c.e. Q ‐degrees are dense in the structure of c.e. Q ‐degrees. We construct a 2‐c.e. Q ‐degree, which can't be isolated from below not only by c.e. Q ‐degrees, but by any Q ‐degree. We also prove that below any c.e. Q ‐degree there is a 2‐c.e. Q ‐degree, which is non‐isolated from below and from above (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We propose a technique for constructing two infinite families of non‐embeddable quasi‐residual designs as soon as one such design satisfying certain conditions exists. The main tools are generalized Hadamard matrices and balanced generalized weighing matrices. Starting with a specific non‐embeddable quasi‐residual 2‐(27,9,4) design, we construct for every positive integer m a non‐embeddable 2‐(3m,3m?1,(3m?1?1)/2)‐design, and, if rm=(3m?1)/2 is a prime power, we construct for every positive integer n a non‐embeddable design. For each design in these families, a symmetric design with the corresponding parameters is known to exist. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper is devoted to Stokes and Navier–Stokes problems with non‐standard boundary conditions: we consider, in particular, the case where the pressure is given on a part of the boundary. These problems were studied by Bégue, Conca, Murat and Pironneau. They proved the existence of variational solutions, indicating that these were solutions of the initial non‐standard problems, if they are regular enough, but without specifying the conditions on the data which would imply this regularity. In this paper, first we show that the variational solutions, on supposing pressure on the boundary Γ2 of regularity H1/2 instead of H?1/2, have their Laplacians in L2 and, therefore, are solutions of non‐standard Stokes problem. Next, we give a result of regularity H2, which we generalize, obtaining regularities Wm, r, m∈?, m?2, r?2. Finally, by a fixed‐point argument, we prove analogous results for the Navier–Stokes problem, in the case where the viscosity νis large compared to the data. In a recent work, the author introduced a robust multilevel incomplete factorization algorithm using spanning trees of matrix graphs (Proceedings of the 1999 International Conference on Preconditioning Techniques for Large Sparse Matrix Problems in Industrial Applications, Hubert H. Humphrey Center, University of Minnesota, 1999, 251–257). Based on this idea linear and non‐linear algebraic multilevel iteration (AMLI) methods are investigated in the present paper. In both cases, the preconditioner is constructed recursively from the coarsest to finer and finer levels. The considered W‐cycles only need diagonal solvers on all levels and additionally evaluate a second‐degree matrix polynomial (linear case), or, perform ν inner GCG‐type iterations (non‐linear case) on every other level. This involves the same type of preconditioner for the corresponding Schur complement. The non‐linear variant has the additional benefit of being free from any method parameters to be estimated. Based on the same type of approximation property similar convergence rates are obtained for linear and non‐linear AMLI, even for a very small number ν of inner iterations, e.g. ν =2,3. The presented methods are robust with respect to anisotropy and discontinuities in the coefficients of the PDEs and can also be applied to unstructured‐grid problems. This paper deals with the appearance of monotone bounded travelling wave solutions for a parabolic reaction‐diffusion equation which frequently meets both in chemical and biological systems. In particular, we prove the existence of monotone front type solutions for any wave speed cc* and give an estimate for the threshold value c*. Our model takes into account both of a density dependent diffusion term and of a non‐linear convection effect. Moreover, we do not require the main non‐linearity g to be a regular C1 function; in particular we are able to treat both the case when g′(0) = 0, giving rise to a degenerate equilibrium point in the phase plane, and the singular case when g′(0) = +∞. Our results generalize previous ones due to Aronson and Weinberger [Adv. Math. 30 (1978), pp. 33–76 ], Gibbs and Murray (see Murray [Mathematical Biology, Springer‐Verlag, Berlin, 1993 ]) and McCabe , Leach and Needham [SIAM J. Appl. Math. 59 (1998), pp. 870–899 ]. Finally, we obtain our conclusions by means of a comparison‐type technique which was introduced and developed in this framework in a recent paper by the same authors.  相似文献

In 1983, the second author [D. Maru?i?, Ars Combinatoria 16B (1983), 297–302] asked for which positive integers n there exists a non‐Cayley vertex‐transitive graph on n vertices. (The term non‐Cayley numbers has later been given to such integers.) Motivated by this problem, Feng [Discrete Math 248 (2002), 265–269] asked to determine the smallest valency ?(n) among valencies of non‐Cayley vertex‐transitive graphs of order n. As cycles are clearly Cayley graphs, ?(n)?3 for any non‐Cayley number n. In this paper a goal is set to determine those non‐Cayley numbers n for which ?(n) = 3, and among the latter to determine those for which the generalized Petersen graphs are the only non‐Cayley vertex‐transitive graphs of order n. It is known that for a prime p every vertex‐transitive graph of order p, p2 or p3 is a Cayley graph, and that, with the exception of the Coxeter graph, every cubic non‐Cayley vertex‐transitive graph of order 2p, 4p or 2p2 is a generalized Petersen graph. In this paper the next natural step is taken by proving that every cubic non‐Cayley vertex‐transitive graph of order 4p2, p>7 a prime, is a generalized Petersen graph. In addition, cubic non‐Cayley vertex‐transitive graphs of order 2pk, where p>7 is a prime and k?p, are characterized. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 69: 77–95, 2012  相似文献

We consider a time‐dependent and a stationary convection‐diffusion equation. These equations are approximated by a combined finite element – finite volume method: the diffusion term is discretized by Crouzeix‐Raviart piecewise linear finite elements on a triangular grid, and the convection term by upwind barycentric finite volumes. In the nonstationary case, we use an implicit Euler approach for time discretization. This scheme is shown to be L2‐stable uniformly with respect to the diffusion coefficient. In addition, it turns out that stability is unconditional in the time‐dependent case. These results hold if the underlying grid satisfies a condition that is fulfilled, for example, by some structured meshes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The paper deals with the time‐dependent linear heat equation with a non‐linear and non‐local boundary condition that arises when considering the radiation balance. Solutions are considered to be functions with values in V := {vH1(Ω)∣γvL5(∂Ω)}. As a consequence one has to work with non‐standard Sobolev spaces. The existence of solutions was proved by using a Galerkin‐based approximation scheme. Because of the non‐Hilbert character of the space V and the non‐local character of the boundary conditions, convergence of the Galerkin approximations is difficult to prove. The advantage of this approach is that we don't have to make assumptions about sub‐ and supersolutions. Finally, continuity of the solutions with respect to time is analysed. We approximate, in the sense of Γ‐convergence, free discontinuity functionals with linear growth by a sequence of non‐local integral functionals depending on the average of the gradient on small balls. The result extends to a higher dimension what is already proved in (Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. 2007; 186 (4): 722–744), where there is the proof of the general one‐dimensional case, and in (ESAIM Control Optim. Calc. Var. 2007; 13 (1):135–162), where the n‐dimensional case with ?=Id is treated. Moreover, we investigate whether it is possible to approximate a given free discontinuity functional by means of non‐local energies. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The paper is devoted to the investigation of a parabolic partial differential equation with non‐local and time‐dependent boundary conditions arising from ductal carcinoma in situ model. Approximation solution of the present problem is implemented by the Ritz–Galerkin method, which is a first attempt at tackling parabolic equation with such non‐classical boundary conditions. In the process of dealing with the difficulty caused by integral term in non‐local boundary condition, we use a trick of introducing the transition function G(x,t) to convert non‐local boundary to another non‐classical boundary, which can be handled with the Ritz–Galerkin method. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique in this paper. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The thermal convection in a layer of a third grade fluid is investigated, with viscosity being a general function of temperature. We develop a non‐linear stability analysis and prove that unconditional non‐linear stability criterion is achieved using a natural energy approach. This shows that, in some sense, the equations for a fluid of third grade are preferable to those for a fluid of second grade or a dipolar fluid. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the paper, we first investigate symmetries of isospectral and non‐isospectral four‐potential Ablowitz–Ladik hierarchies. We express these hierarchies in the form of un,t= LmH(0) , where m is an arbitrary integer (instead of a nature number) and L is the recursion operator. Then by means of the zero‐curvature representations of the isospectral and non‐isospectral flows, we construct symmetries for the isospectral equation hierarchy as well as non‐isospectral equation hierarchy, respectively. The symmetries, respectively, form two centerless Kac‐Moody‐Virasoro algebras. The recursion operator L is proved to be hereditary and a strong symmetry for this isospectral equation hierarchy. Besides, we make clear for the relation between four‐potential and two‐potential Ablowitz–Ladik hierarchies. The even order members in the four‐potential Ablowitz–Ladik hierarchies together with their symmetries and algebraic structures can be reduced to two‐potential case. The reduction keeps invariant for the algebraic structures and the recursion operator for two potential case becomes L2 .  相似文献

We show via an exhaustive computer search that there does not exist a (K6?e)‐decomposition of K29. This is the first example of a non‐complete graph G for which a G‐decomposition of K2|E(G)|+1 does not exist. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 18: 94–104, 2010  相似文献

We consider a non‐stationary Stokes system in a thin porous medium Ω? of thickness ? which is perforated by periodically solid cylinders of size a ? . We are interested here to give the limit behavior when ? goes to zero. To do so, we apply an adaptation of the unfolding method. Time‐dependent Darcy's laws are rigorously derived from this model depending on the comparison between a ? and ? . Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, we show how to construct pairs of orthogonal pandiagonal Latin squares and panmagic squares from certain types of modular n‐queens solutions. We prove that when these modular n‐queens solutions are symmetric, the panmagic squares thus constructed will be associative, where for an n × n associative magic square A = (aij), for all i and j it holds that aij + an?i?1,n?j?1 = c for a fixed c. We further show how to construct orthogonal Latin squares whose modular difference diagonals are Latin from any modular n‐queens solution. As well, we analyze constructing orthogonal pandiagonal Latin squares from particular classes of non‐linear modular n‐queens solutions. These pandiagonal Latin squares are not row cyclic, giving a partial solution to a problem of Hedayat. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 15: 221–234, 2007  相似文献

A modified model for a binary fluid is analysed mathematically. The governing equations of the motion consists of a Cahn–Hilliard equation coupled with a system describing a class of non‐Newtonian incompressible fluid with p‐structure. The existence of weak solutions for the evolution problems is shown for the space dimension d=2 with p? 2 and for d=3 with p? 11/5. The existence of measure‐valued solutions is obtained for d=3 in the case 2? p< 11/5. Similar existence results are obtained for the case of nondifferentiable free energy, corresponding to the density constraint |ψ| ? 1. We also give regularity and uniqueness results for the solutions and characterize stable stationary solutions. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
