The synthesis and characterization of hyperbranched aromatic poly(ether imide)s are described. An AB2 monomer, which contained a pair of phenolic groups and an aryl fluoro moiety activated toward displacement by the attached imide heterocyclic ring, was prepared. The nucleophilic substitution of the fluoride with the phenolate groups led to the formation of an ether linkage and, subsequently, to the hyperbranched poly(ether imide), which contained terminal phenolic groups. A similar one‐step polymerization involving a monomer that contained silyl‐protected phenols yielded a hyperbranched poly(ether imide) with terminal silylated phenols. The degree of branching of these hyperbranched polymers was approximately 55%, as determined by a combination of model compound studies and 1H NMR integration experiments. End‐capping reactions of the terminal phenolic groups were readily accomplished with a variety of acid chlorides and acid anhydrides. The nature of the chain‐end groups significantly influenced physical properties, such as the glass‐transition temperature and the solubility of the hyperbranched poly(ether imide)s. As the length of the acyl chain of the terminal ester groups increased, the glass‐transition temperature value for the polymer decreased, and the solubility of the polymer in polar solvents was reduced, becoming more soluble in nonpolar solvents. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We synthesized an AB2‐type monomer, 4‐{4‐[di(4‐aminophenyl)methyl]phenoxy}phthalic acid, which contained one phthalic acid group and two aminophenyl functionalities. The direct self‐polycondensation of the AB2‐type monomer in the presence of triphenylphosphite as an activator afforded a hyperbranched poly(ether imide) with a large number of terminal amino groups. This polymer was characterized with 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. The degree of branching of the hyperbranched poly(ether imide) was approximately 56%, as determined by a combination of model compound studies and an analysis of 1H NMR spectroscopy integration data. The terminal amino groups underwent functionalization readily. The solubility and thermal properties of the resulting polymers depended on the nature of the chain end groups. In addition, the hyperbranched poly(ether imide) was grafted with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the grafted POSS molecules aggregated to form a nanocomposite material. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hyperbranched aryl polycarbonates were prepared via the polymerizations of A2B and AB2 monomers, which involved the condensation of chloroformate (A) functionalities with tert‐butyldimethylsilyl‐protected phenols (B), facilitated by reactions with silver fluoride. The polymerization of the A2B monomer gave hyperbranched polycarbonates bearing fluoroformate chain ends, which were hydrolyzed to phenolic chain‐end moieties and further elaborated to tert‐butyldimethylsilyl ether groups. The polymerization of the AB2 monomer gave tert‐butyldimethylsilyl ether‐terminated hyperbranched polycarbonates. The polymerizations were conducted at 23–70 °C in 20% acetonitrile/tetrahydrofuran in the presence of a stoichiometric excess of silver fluoride for 20–40 h to afford hyperbranched polycarbonates with weight‐average molecular weights exceeding 100,000 Da and polydispersity indices of typically 2–3. The degrees of branching were determined by a reductive degradation procedure followed by high‐performance liquid chromatography. Alternatively, the degrees of branching were measurable by solution‐state 1H NMR analyses and agreed with the statistical 50% branching expected for the polymerization of A2B and AB2 monomers not experiencing constructive or destructive electronic effects on the reactivity of the multiple functional groups. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hyperbranched poly(ether sulfone)s were prepared by the self‐polycondensation of the novel AB2 monomer, 4‐(3,5‐hydroxyphenoxy)‐4′‐fluorodiphenylsulfone. The high‐molecular‐weight polymers were isolated in good yields. The degree of branching (DB) of the resulting polymers was investigated by the preparation of dendritic and linear model compounds. The DB determined by gated decoupling 13C NMR measurements was in the range 0.17–0.41 and was dependent on the base used for the self‐polycondensation. It was found that cesium fluoride was an effective base to form the polymer having the DB of 0.41. The resulting hyperbranched poly(ether sulfone)s showed good solubility in organic solvents. The solubility and the glass transition temperature of the polymers were influenced by the terminal functional groups. The unique thermal crosslinking phenomenon was observed during the DSC measurements of the hydroxyl‐terminated hyperbranched poly(ether sulfone) under air condition. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 3,5‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl phenylcarbamate—a novel AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer and 3,5‐bis{ethyleneoxy(4‐aminophenoxy)}phenyl carbonyl azide—a novel AB2‐type azide monomer were synthesized in high yield. Step‐growth polymerization of these monomers were found to give a first example of hyperbranched poly (aryl‐ether‐urea) and poly(aryl‐alkyl‐ether‐urea). Molecular weights (Mw) of the polymer were found to vary from 1,858 to 52,432 depending upon the monomer and experimental conditions used. The polydispersity indexes were relatively narrow due to the controlled regeneration of isocyanate functional groups for the polymerization reaction. The degree of branching (DB) was determined using 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and the values ranged from 87 to 54%. All the polymers underwent two‐stage decomposition and were stable up to 300 °C. Functionalized end‐capping of poly(aryl‐ether‐urea) using phenylchloroformate and di‐t‐butyl dicarbonate (Boc)2O changed the thermal properties and solubility of the polymers. Copolymerization of AB2‐type blocked isocyante monomer with functionally similar AB monomer were also carried out. The molecular weights of copolymers were found to be in the order of 6 × 105 with narrow dispersity. It was found that the Tg's of poly(aryl‐alkyl‐ether‐urea)s were significantly less (46–49 °C) compared to poly(aryl‐ether‐urea)s. Moreover the former showed melting transition at 154 °C, which was not observed in the latter case. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 2959–2977, 2007  相似文献

Starting from 3,5‐diamino benzoic acid, 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzyl ether, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with flexible ether group, and 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzoate, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with ester group, were synthesized for the first time. Using the same starting compound, 3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}benzylalcohol, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer, was synthesized through a highly efficient short‐cut route. Step‐growth polymerization of these monomers at individually optimized experimental conditions results in the formation of hyperbranched polyurethanes with and without ether and ester groups. Copolymerizations of these monomers with functionally similar AB monomers were also carried out. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined using GPC and the values (Mw) were found to vary from 1.5 × 104 to 1.2 × 106. While hyperbranched polyurethanes having no ether or ester group were found to be thermally stable up to 217 °C, hyperbranched poly(ether–urethane)s and poly(ester–urethane)s were found to be thermally stable up to 245 and 300 °C, respectively. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of polyurethane was reduced significantly when introducing ether groups into the polymer chain, whereas Tg was not observed even up to 250 °C in the case of poly(ester–urethane). Hyperbranched polyurethanes derived from all the three different AB2 monomers were soluble in highly polar solvents and the copolymers showed improved solubility. Polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether of molecular weight 550 and decanol were used as end‐capping groups, which were seen to affect the thermal, solution, and solubility properties of polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New A2B monomers were synthesized for preparation of hyperbranched aryl ether sulfone macromolecules with aryl fluoride and phenol terminal functionalities. The macromolecules, which possess high thermal stability, were prepared using the divergent approach. A masked phenol with two aryl fluoride groups and a bisphenol with an aryl fluoride group were the monomers used to synthesize these polymers. In both cases, the aryl fluoride group is activated by a sulfone moiety. The synthetic method used for the preparation of the hyperbranched macromolecules gave a fast reaction and a high yield. These methods include, e.g., the use of Cs2CO3 and Mg(OH)2 to generate the phenolate ion in situ. Use of the latter results in the formation of insoluble magnesium fluoride. The best conditions for the reaction utilized the more active nucleophilic polycondensation agent, Cs2CO3, and an aryl carbonate as a masked phenol. NMR, SEC, and MALDI-TOF-MS were used to characterize the samples. MALDI-TOF-MS allowed us to identify the different oligomeric species present, and it also indicated that an internal cyclization competes with the polymerization. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Hyperbranched poly(ether sulfone) was prepared in the presence of an oligomeric linear poly(ether sulfone) to generate multiblock hyperbranched‐linear (LxHB) copolymers. The LxHB copolymers were prepared in a two‐step, one‐pot synthesis by first polymerizing AB monomer to generate a linear block of a desired molecular weight followed by addition of the AB2 monomer in a large excess (19:1, AB2:AB) to generate the hyperbranched block. NMR integration analysis indicates that AB2:AB ratio is independent of the reaction time. Because the molecular weight still increases with reaction time, these results suggest that polymer growth continues after consumption of monomer by condensation into a multiblock architecture. The LxHB poly(ether sulfone)s have better thermal stability (10% mass loss > 343 vs. 317 °C) and lower Tg (200 vs. > 250 °C) than the hyperbranched homopolymer, higher Tg than the linear homopolymer (<154 °C), while little difference in the solubility character was observed between the two polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new trifluoromethyl-activated AB monomer has been successfully synthesized by Pd-initiated coupling of 4-bromo anisole with 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylphenylboronic acid followed by demethylation. The monomer leads to a semifluorinated poly(arylene ether) by nucleophilic displacement polymerization reaction. The AB monomer has been further copolymerized with a corresponding AB 2 monomer to form the corresponding semifluorinated hyperbranched (hb) poly(arylene ether). The resulting linear and hb poly(arylene ether)s exhibited weight average molecular weight of 75700 and 144100 g/mol, respectively. The hb copolymer exhibited better solubility in different organic solvents compared to the linear poly(arylene ether). The polymers showed excellent thermal stability up to 522°C at 10% wt loss in air and glass transition temperatures as high as 187°C. The mechanical properties of the linear poly(arylene ether) film 1a exhibited tensile strength at break of 89 MPa, elongation at break of up to 3% and a Young’s modulus value of 2.66 GPa. The films of the polymers were hydrophobic in nature and showed water contact angle as high as 93.6°.  相似文献

Hyperbranched poly(ether nitrile)s were prepared from a novel AB2 type monomer, 2‐chloro‐4‐(3,5‐dihydroxyphenoxy)benzonitrile, via nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Soluble and low‐viscous hyperbranched polymers with molecular weights upto 233,600 (Mw) were isolated. According to the 1H NMR and GPC data, the unique polymerization behavior was observed, which implies that the weight average molecular weight increased after the number average molecular weight reached plateau region. Model compounds were prepared to characterize the branching structure. Spectroscopic measurements of the model compounds and the resulting polymers, such as 1H, DEPT 13C NMR, and MS, strongly suggest that the ether exchange reaction and cyclization are involved in the propagation reaction. The side reactions would affect the unique polymerization behavior. The resulting polymers showed a good solubility in organic solvents similar to other hyperbranched aromatic polymers. The hydroxy‐terminated polymer was even soluble in basic water. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 5835–5844, 2009  相似文献

Hyperbranched polymers consisting of aromatic or aliphatic polyether cores and epoxide chain‐end peripheries were prepared by proton transfer polymerization. AB2 diepoxyphenol monomer 1 proved to be well suited for the preparation of hyperbranched aromatic polymer 2 by this proton transfer polymerization. The use of chloride‐ion catalysis, rather than conventional base catalysis, for the preparation of polymers from diepoxyphenol 1 offered a unique method to control the ultimate molecular weight of the polymer product through variations of the initial concentration of monomer 1 in tetrahydrofuran. An alternative route to hyperbranched polyether epoxies made use of commercially available or easily prepared aliphatic monomers of the types AB2, AB3, and A2 + B3. Although these aliphatic polymerizations can be initiated with a base, chloride‐ion catalysis proved most effective for controlling the polymerization. The hyperbranched epoxies were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and multi‐angle laser light scattering. Chemical modification of the polymers after polymerization was carried out via nucleophilic addition on the epoxide groups or derivatization of the hydroxy substituents within the hyperbranched polymer structure. Spectroscopic measurements suggested that some such ring‐opened materials may adopt reverse unimolecular micellar structures in appropriate solution environments. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel AB2‐type monomers such as 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy)benzoic acid ( monomer 1 ), methyl 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy) benzoate ( monomer 2 ), and 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy)benzoyl chloride ( monomer 3 ) were synthesized. Solution polymerization and melt self‐polycondensation of these monomers yielded hydroxyl‐terminated hyperbranched aromatic poly(ether‐ester)s. The structure of these polymers was established using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights (Mw) of the polymers were found to vary from 2.0 × 103 to 1.49 × 104 depending on the polymerization techniques and the experimental conditions used. Suitable model compounds that mimic exactly the dendritic, linear, and terminal units present in the hyperbranched polymer were synthesized for the calculation of degree of branching (DB) and the values ranged from 52 to 93%. The thermal stability of the polymers was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, which showed no virtual weight loss up to 200 °C. The inherent viscosities of the polymers in DMF ranged from 0.010 to 0.120 dL/g. End‐group modification of the hyperbranched polymer was carried out with phenyl isocyanate, 4‐(decyloxy)benzoic acid and methyl red dye. The end‐capping groups were found to change the thermal properties of the polymers such as Tg. The optical properties of hyperbranched polymer and the dye‐capped hyperbranched polymer were investigated using ultraviolet‐absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core‐shell type hyperbranched polymers that are capable of forming unimolecular micelles and reverse micelles in aqueous and hydrocarbon medium, respectively, were synthesized via two approaches, namely AB2 + A‐R and A2 + B3 + A‐R type copolymerizations. In case of micelle‐forming polymers, an AB2 monomer carrying a decamethylene spacer was used along with heptaethylene glycol monomethyl ether (HPEG) as the A‐R type comonomer. One the other hand, for the preparation of reverse micelle‐forming polymers, an AB2 monomer containing an oligo(oxyethylene) spacer was used along with cetyl alcohol as the A‐R type comonomer. The former was readily soluble in water while the latter was soluble in hydrocarbon solvents like hexane. NMR spectral studies confirmed that both the approaches generated highly branched structures wherein about 65–70% of the terminal B groups were capped by the A‐R comonomer. Dye‐uptake measurements revealed that the polymers prepared via the AB2 + A‐R approach exhibited a significantly larger uptake compared with those prepared via the A2 + B3 + A‐R approach. This suggests that the AB2 + A‐R approach generates hyperbranched polymers with better defined core‐shell topology when compared with polymers prepared via the A2 + B3 + A‐R approach, which is in accordance with previous studies that suggest that A2 + B3 approach yields polymers with significantly lower branching levels and consequently less compact structures. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. AB2 monomers present opportunities to conduct one‐pot syntheses of highly branched or “hyperbranched” polymers, which are known for their distinct physical and chemical properties relative to linear polymers. This paper describes the synthesis of a deoxybenzoin‐containing AB2 monomer and its use in step‐growth polymerization to prepare branched aromatic polyesters. Highly soluble deoxybenzoin polymers were obtained with degrees of branching reaching 0.36 and estimated molecular weights approaching 20 kDa. The phenolic chain ends of the polymer allowed for post‐polymerization modification by silylation and esterification chemistry. TGA and microscale combustion calorimetry revealed these novel aromatic polyesters to possess the critically important characteristics of flame‐retardant polymers, such as high char yield and low heat release. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new straightforward strategy for synthesis of novel hyperbranched poly (ether amide)s from readily available monomers has been developed. By optimizing the reaction conditions, the AB2‐type monomers were formed dominantly during the initial reaction stage. Without any purification, the AB2 intermediate was subjected to further polymerization in the presence (or absence) of an initiator, to prepare the hyperbranched polymer‐bearing multihydroxyl end‐groups. The influence of monomer, initiator, and solvent on polymerization and the molecular weight (MW) of the resultant polymers was studied thoroughly. The MALDI–TOF MS of the polymers indicated that the polymerization proceeded in the proposed way. Analyses of 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra revealed the branched structures of the polymers obtained. These polymers exhibit high‐moderate MWs and broad MW distributions determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) in combination with triple detectors, including refractive index, light scattering, and viscosity detectors. In addition, the examination of the solution behavior of these polymers showed that the values of intrinsic viscosity [η] and the Mark–Houwink exponent α were remarkably lower compared with their linear analogs, because of their branched nature. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new phosphorus containing trifluoromethyl-activated bisfluoro B2 monomer has been synthesized successfully by coupling reaction of 4-methoxyphenylphosphonic dichloride and the Grignard salt of 5-bromo-2-fluorobenzotrifluoride. This monomer was converted to linear poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s by nucleophilic displacement of the fluorine atom on the benzene ring with several diphenols. The B2 monomer was further demethylated to form an AB2 monomer which on self condensation yielded hyperbranched poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide) with identical phosphorous containing moiety. The products obtained exhibit weight-average molecular weights as high as 600,000 g mol−1 in SEC. These linear and hyperbranched poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s showed thermal stability as high as 516 °C for 10% weight loss in TGA in nitrogen and showed glass transition temperatures up to 253 °C in DSC. All the polymers were soluble in a wide range of organic solvents, e.g., CHCl3, THF, NMP and DMF, however, the hb sample showed a significant lower solution viscosity compared to linear samples of similar molar mass. Transparent thin films of linear poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s casted from dichloromethane exhibited tensile strengths up to 50 MPa, a modulus of elasticity up to 0.95 GPa and elongation at break up to 36% depending on their exact repeating unit structures. No free standing films could be prepared from the hb analogue due to the missing entanglements, but stable thin polymer films on silicon wafers with high hydrophobicity were formed which showed water contact angles as high as 91°.  相似文献

Radical catalyzed thiol‐ene reaction has become a useful alternative to the Huisgen‐type click reaction as it helps to expand the variability in reaction conditions as well as the range of clickable entities. Thus, direct generation of hyperbranched polymers bearing peripheral allyl groups that could be clicked using a variety of functional thiols would be of immense value. A specifically designed AB2 type monomer, that carries two allyl benzyl ethers groups and one alcohol functionality, was shown to undergo self‐condensation under acid‐catalyzed melt‐transetherification to yield a hyperbranched polyether that carries numerous allyl end‐groups. Importantly, it was shown that the kinetics of polymerization is not dramatically affected by the change of the ether unit from previously studied methyl benzyl ether to an allyl benzyl ether. The peripheral allyl groups were readily clicked quantitatively, using a variety of thiols, to generate an hydrocarbon‐soluble octadecyl‐derivative, amphiphilic systems using 2‐mercaptoethanol and chiral amino acid (N‐benzoyl cystine) derivatized hyperbranched structures; thus demonstrating the versatility of this novel class of clickable hyperscaffolds. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(aryl ether)s were successfully prepared via aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction from various bisphenols and a novel bipolar aryl difluoride monomer containing electron‐donor triphenylamine and electron‐acceptor 1,2,4‐triazole moieties. The poly(aryl ether)s exhibited excellent solubility in organic solvents such as dimethylformamide, chloroform, and tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. The poly(aryl ether)s showed high thermal stability with Td10 higher than 500 °C and glass transition temperatures (Tg) higher than 187 °C. The thin films of the poly(aryl ether)s indicated bistable resistive switching behavior with ON/OFF current ratios as high as 103. The switching on and switching off bias voltages of the poly(aryl ether)s were affected by the bisphenol moiety. The good resistive switching behavior of the poly(aryl ether)s made them promising candidates for future nonvolatile memory applications. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An alternative approach to an AB2 monomer, N‐[3,5‐bis(4‐hydroxybenzoyl)benzene]‐4‐fluorophthalimde, 4, for hyperbranched poly(arylene ether ketone imide)s has been developed. The key steps were a para‐position selective electrophilic aromatic substitution of fluorobenzene with 5‐nitroisophthaloyl dichloride and a subsequent clean conversion of the aryl fluorides to phenol groups using potassium hydroxide as the nucleophile. The overall yield for the synthesis of 4 was 51.6%.  相似文献

As an alternative to strong acid reaction media for the Friedel–Crafts acylation for a polymer‐forming reaction, a mild polyphosphoric acid (PPA) with optimized amount of phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) has been tested for the polymerization of AB monomers 4‐(2‐phenoxyethoxy)benzoic acid and 3‐(2‐phenoxyethoxy)benzoic acid, and an AB2 monomer 3,5‐bis(2‐phenoxyethoxy)benzoic acid. The reaction progress of AB2 monomer was conveniently traced by FTIR spectroscopy monitoring aromatic ketone (C?O) stretching bands arisen from carboxylic acid groups at the chain ends and carbonyl groups in the backbone as a function of reaction time at 110 °C. The resultant linear and hyperbranched polymers containing flexible oxyethylene spacers, which were prone to be hydrolyzed in strong acids at elevated temperature, displayed high intrinsic viscosities. Thus, the reaction medium PPA/P2O5 mixture as an electrophilic substitution reaction was indeed benign not to depolymerize growing polymer molecules but strong enough for the direct generation of carbonium ion from carboxylic acid to promote efficient polymerization. The resultant hyperbranched poly(etherketone) (PEK) displayed the best solubility among samples. All PEKs showed good thermal stability; glass transition temperatures were in the range of 90–117 °C; 5% weight loss generally occurred at greater than 345 °C in air. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
