 The preparation of polymethyl methacrylate lattices stabilized by polyhydroxystearic acid and crosslinked with ethylene glycol dimethylmethacrylate (EGDM) has been studied. Crosslinking is a new development in the synthesis of PMMA latex. The particles are monodisperse when the concentration of EGDM ranges from 0.33 to 1.44%. The lattices are stable in aromatic and aliphatic solvents. Swelling occurs due to penetration of solvent molecules into the latex. The degree of swelling is calculated by viscosity and by dynamic light scattering measurements. Received: 30 January 1997 Accepted: 2 June 1997  相似文献

The dispersion polymerization of methylmethacrylate stabilized by poly(12-hydroxy-stearic acid) in hydrocarbon media has been investigated. Unlike earlier results [7] it was found that stable latex particles can be prepared in the initial monomer concentration range 8.5 % to 34 %. High refractive index dielectric (HRID) nanoparticles are a clear alternative to metals in nanophotonic applications due to their low losses and directional scattering properties. It has been demonstrated that HRID dimers are more efficient scattering units than single nanoparticles in redirecting the incident radiation towards the forward direction. This effect was recently reported and is known as the “near zero-backward” scattering condition, attained when nanoparticles forming dimers strongly interact with each other. Here, we analyzed the electromagnetic response of HRID isolated nanoparticles and aggregates when deposited on monolayer and graded-index multilayer dielectric substrates. In particular, we studied the fraction of radiation that is scattered towards a substrate with known optical properties when the nanoparticles are located on its surface. We demonstrated that HRID dimers can increase the radiation emitted towards the substrate compared to that of isolated nanoparticles. However, this effect was only present for low values of the substrate refractive index. With the aim of observing the same effect for silicon substrates, we show that it is necessary to use a multilayer antireflection coating. We conclude that dimers of HRID nanoparticles on a graded-index multilayer substrate can increase the radiation scattered into a silicon photovoltaic wafer. The results in this work can be applied to the design of novel solar cells.  相似文献

The refractive index and absorption coefficient of blue phase liquid crystals are investigated by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system. Four phases, including isotropic phase, BPII, BPI, and cholesteric phase are investigated. The refractive index of liquid crystal sample is dependent on the temperature, which is related to the different phases. In our experiment, in the frequency range of 0.2–1.2 THz, the refractive index of BPII and BPI is about 1.620 and 1.625, respectively. For BPII and BPI, the measured absorption coefficients increase with the increase of frequency, with absorption peak appearing at 1.11 and 1.05 THz, respectively. These properties of BPLC provide useful information for BPLC-based terahertz components such as phase shifter, wave-plates and so on.  相似文献

Photochromic properties of methylacrylate monomers and polymers containing azobenzene groups with heterocyclic sulfonamide functionalities viz sulfisomidyne (4-amino-N-[2,6-dimethylpyrimidyn-4-yl]benzenesulfonamide) and sulfamethoxazole (4-amino-N-[5-methylisoxazol-3-yl]benzenesulfonamide) substituents were investigated. On illumination with light the azobenzene group underwent trans-cis isomerisation, which was manifested by a drop in the absorbance of the maximum absorption peak at ca. 450 nm and by decrease in refractive index. Quantum chemical calculations showed significant differences in UV-VIS spectra, dipole moments, polarizability and refractive index between both cis and trans form of the chromophoric monomers. The illumination of spin-coated polymer films during ellipsometry measurements resulted in a change in refractive index within the range of 0.014 to 0.025. The dynamics of growth and decay of refractive index changes, was described by biexponential functions approach.  相似文献

An investigation of the radial structure of composite latex particles by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) is given. Measurements at different contrasts were done by addition of sucrose to the dispersion medium water. The latex particles investigated here consist of a poly(styrene) core and a shell of poly(methylmethacrylate) and were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization. Since the electron density of both polymers can be easily matched by concentrated sucrose solution, a full analysis of the radial electron density by contrast variation can be given. Depending on the mode of monomer addition during the second polymerization step a very sharp or a diffuse interface between the two incompatible polymers may result.Respectfully dedicated to Prof. E. Solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate) in styrene are used to produce thin polymer films (1m–20m) saturated with styrene monomer. In the illuminated areas refractive index changes up to 10–2 are achieved by photoinduced polymerisation. Dispersive Fourier transform spectroscopy (DFTS) is used to determine the dispersion of the real refractive indexn() of the gases CH4, C2H4, C2H6, C3H8 and cyclo-C3H6 in the visible wave number range. A group of 22 polymers have been synthesized to test their suitability for recording holographic gratings. Polyamides, polyimides, polyesters and their combinations were functionalized with pendant azobenzene groups containing single or double N=N. The polymers were studied using a standard degenerate two-wave mixing technique, which enables measurement of light-induced periodic modification of polymer refractive index and absorption coefficient by analysis of the diffracted light. Two qualitatively different configurations of the holographic polarization recording were used, s-s and s-p. The relationship between structural properties of polymer matrix and azobenzene groups and the holographic grating recording kinetics and light diffraction efficiency was investigated.  相似文献

Permanent need to understand nature, structure and properties of humic substances influences also separation methods that are in a wide scope used for fractionation, characterization and analysis of humic substances (HS). At the first glance techniques based on size-exclusion phenomena are the most useful and utilized for relating elution data to the molecular mass distribution of HS, however, with some limitations and exceptions, respectively, in the structural investigation of HS. The second most abundant separation mechanism is reversed-phase based on weak hydrophobic interactions beneficially combined with the step gradients inducing distinct features in rather featureless analytical signal of HS. Relatively great effort is invested to the developments of immobilized-metal affinity chromatography mimicking chelate-forming properties of HS as ligands in the environment. Surprisingly, relatively less attention is given to the ion-ion interactions based ion-exchange chromatography of HS. Chromatographic separation methods play also an important role in the examination of interactions of HS with pesticides. They allow us to determine binding constants and the other data necessary to predict the mobility of chemical pollutants in the environment. HS is frequently adversely acting in analytical procedures as interfering substance, so more detailed information is desired on manifestation of its numerous properties in analytical procedures. The article topic is covered by the review emphasizing advances in the field done in the period of last 10 years from 2000 till 2010.  相似文献

Mass spectrometry (MS) is the most versatile and comprehensive method in “OMICS” sciences (i.e. in proteomics, genomics, metabolomics and lipidomics). The applications of MS and tandem MS (MS/MS or MSn) provide sequence information of the full complement of biological samples in order to understand the importance of the sequences on their precise and specific functions. Nowadays, the control of polymer sequences and their accurate characterization is one of the significant challenges of current polymer science. Therefore, a similar approach can be very beneficial for characterizing and understanding the complex structures of synthetic macromolecules. MS-based strategies allow a relatively precise examination of polymeric structures (e.g. their molar mass distributions, monomer units, side chain substituents, end-group functionalities, and copolymer compositions). Moreover, tandem MS offer accurate structural information from intricate macromolecular structures; however, it produces vast amount of data to interpret. In “OMICS” sciences, the software application to interpret the obtained data has developed satisfyingly (e.g. in proteomics), because it is not possible to handle the amount of data acquired via (tandem) MS studies on the biological samples manually. It can be expected that special software tools will improve the interpretation of (tandem) MS output from the investigations of synthetic polymers as well. Eventually, the MS/MS field will also open up for polymer scientists who are not MS-specialists. In this review, we dissect the overall framework of the MS and MS/MS analysis of synthetic polymers into its key components. We discuss the fundamentals of polymer analyses as well as recent advances in the areas of tandem mass spectrometry, software developments, and the overall future perspectives on the way to polymer sequencing, one of the last Holy Grail in polymer science.  相似文献
