We investigate short distance singularities inside the Polyakov path integral in an arbitrary closed bosonic string background due to vertex operators and small handles or holes. The latter are represented in terms of handle or hole operators, which we construct explicitly. The requirement of global Weyl invariance generates loop-corrected equations of motion for the string modes including tadpole terms and self-energy corrections. The relation to theS-matrix and superstrings are discussed briefly.  相似文献

We show that one-loop string effects do not alter the form of the leading terms in the low-energy effective ten-dimensional N=1 supergravity theory derived from the heterotic string. We extend this result to the four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theory obtained after compactification, showing in particular that its Kähler potential is not renormalized by string loop effects or by the exchange of Kaluza-Klein modes. We also demonstrate that the Kähler potential and the gauge kinetic function are not renormalized by one-loop string effects in a wide class of four-dimensional formulations of superstring theories.  相似文献

It is shown that the Type IIA superstring compactified on K3 has a smooth string soliton with the same zero mode structure as the heterotic string compactified on a four-torus, thus providing new evidence for a conjectured exact duality between the two six-dimensional string theories. The chiral worldsheet bosons arise as zero modes of Ramond-Ramond fields of the IIA string theory and live on a signature (20,4) even, self-dual lattice. Stable, finite loops of soliton string provide the charged Ramond-Ramond states necessary for enhanced gauge symmetries at degeneration points of the K3 surface. It is also shown that Type IIB strings toroidally compactified to six dimensions have a multiplet of string solutions with Type II worldsheets.  相似文献

An action is presented for the free bosonic string on external flat space in terms of an antisymmetric second-rank string background tensor which is classically equivalent to the Nambu-Goto action. Both action and field equations are entirely described in terms of 2D world-sheet forms, without any reference to a 2D metric tensor background. The analysis of its canonical formulation shows how the quadratic Virasoro constraints are generated in this case and what their connection with the Bianchi identities are. Since in the orthonormal gauge the reduced action coincides with the standard one, it has the same critical dimension D = 26. The existence of an interaction term of a purely geometric structure stemming in the extrinsic curvature is pointed out. Its action and the new string field equations are then derived. This polynomial antisymmetric string action is uniformly generalized in order to describe d < D-dimensional extended objects in D-dimensional flat space.  相似文献

We search for supersymmetric standard model realizations with extra singlets and extra U(1) using the heterotic string compactification on the Z 6?II orbifold with two Wilson lines. The effective superpotential produced through the vacuum restabilization mechanism is examined for three representative Pati–Salam string models obtained in the literature. An automated selection of semi-realistic vacua along flat directions in the non-Abelian singlet modes field space is performed by requiring the presence of massless pairs of electroweak Higgs bosons having trilinear superpotential couplings with massless singlet modes and the decoupling of color triplet exotic modes needed to suppress B and L number violating processes.  相似文献

The effect of fermionic string conductivity by purely right (or purely left) moving “zero modes” is shown to be governed by a simple Lagrangian characterizing a certain “chiral” (null current carrying) string model whose dynamical equations of motion turn out to be explicitly integrable in a flat spacetime background.  相似文献

While R–R tadpoles should be canceled for consistency, string models with broken supersymmetry generally have uncanceled NS–NS tadpoles. Their presence signals that the background does not solve the field equations, so that these models are in “wrong” vacua. In this Letter we investigate, with reference to some prototype examples, whether the true values of physical quantities can be recovered resumming the NS–NS tadpoles, hence by an approach that is related to the analysis based on String Field Theory by open–closed duality. We show that, indeed, the positive classical vacuum energy of a Dp-brane of the bosonic string is exactly canceled by the negative contribution arising from tree-level tadpole resummation, in complete agreement with Sen's conjecture on open-string tachyon condensation and with the consequent analysis based on String Field Theory. We also show that the vanishing classical vacuum energy of the SO(8192) unoriented bosonic open-string theory does not receive any tree-level corrections from the tadpole resummation. This result is consistent with the fact that this (unstable) configuration is free from tadpoles of massless closed-string modes, although there is a tadpole of the closed string tachyon. The application of this method to superstring models with broken supersymmetry is also discussed.  相似文献

An effective BRST charge QBRST which incorporates the string one-loop corrections is presented for the closed basonic string in an arbitrary background. The effective σ-model action which leads to such a QBRST is obtained and some consequences are discussed.  相似文献

We study the motion of current carrying charged string loops in the Reissner–Nordström black hole background combining the gravitational and electromagnetic field. Introducing new electromagnetic interaction between central charge and charged string loop makes the string loop equations of motion to be non-integrable even in the flat spacetime limit, but it can be governed by an effective potential even in the black hole background. We classify different types of the string loop trajectories using effective potential approach, and we compare the innermost stable string loop positions with loci of the charged particle innermost stable orbits. We examine string loop small oscillations around minima of the string loop effective potential, and we plot radial profiles of the string loop oscillation frequencies for both the radial and vertical modes. We construct charged string loop quasi-periodic oscillations model and we compare it with observed data from microquasars GRO 1655-40, XTE 1550-564, and GRS 1915+105. We also study the acceleration of current carrying string loops along the vertical axis and the string loop ejection from RN black hole neighbourhood, taking also into account the electromagnetic interaction.  相似文献

We propose a new formulation of the space-time interpretation of the c = 1 matrix model. Our formulation uses the well-known leg-pole factor that relates the matrix model amplitudes to that of the 2-dimensional string theory, but includes fluctuations around the Fermi vacuum on both sides of the inverted harmonic oscillator potential of the double-scaled model, even when the fluctuations are small and confined entirely within the asymptotes in the phase plane. We argue that including fluctuations on both sides of the potential is essential for a consistent interpretation of the leg-pole transformed theory as a theory of space-time gravity. We reproduce the known results for the string theory tree-level scattering amplitudes for flat space and linear dilaton background as a special case. We show that the generic case corresponds to more general space-time backgrounds. In particular, we identify the parameter corresponding to background metric perturbation in string theory (black-hole mass) in terms of the matrix model variables. Possible implications of our work for a consistent non-perturbative definition of string theory as well as for quantized gravity and black-hole physics are discussed.  相似文献

Quarks and gluons in the vacuum background field with a finite correlation length d are shown to be linearly confined inside white states. The string tension for an arbitrary representation of SU(N) is obtained in terms of d and the gluon condensate and agrees with numerical data and large N behaviour. The QCD string picture is shown to emerge asymptotically at large euclidean distances.  相似文献

We study systematically how to calculate the β functions nonperturbatively in the sigma model which describes the string propagation in arbitrary background fields. In particular, we calculate explicity the β functions for a tachyon and massless background fields up to the three-string tree interactions and also the four-tachyon tree interactions.  相似文献

In the Polyakov's path integral formalism we calculate the Weyl anomaly of the product of vertex functions which emit the oscillation modes of closed bosonic string. This Weyl anomaly appears when several strings' emission points on the world sheet approach to the same point. Owing to this anomaly, Weyl invariance in the presence of background fields determines the background field equations of motion.  相似文献

We quantize a closed bosonic string in a light-cone gauge in Rindler (uniformly accelerated) space-time and apply it to the Schwarzschild-Kruskal manifold. Inertial and accelerated particle states of the string associated to positive frequency modes with respect to the inertial and Rindler times respectively, are defined. There is a stretching effect of the string due to the presence of an event horizon. We explicitly solve the dynamical constraints leaving as physical degrees of freedom only those transverse to the acceleration. Different mass formulae are introduced depending on whether the centre of mass of the string has uniform speed or uniform acceleration. The expectation value of the Rindler (Schwarzschild) number-mode operator in the string around state (tachyon) results equal to a thermal spectrum at the Hawking-Unruh temperature Ts=α/2π (∼ MPl(MPl/M)1/(D−3), where M is the black hole mass). We find T0=M′/2π where M′ is the accelerated ground state string mass and T0 the temperature Ts in dimensionless frequency units. Correlation functions of string coordinates and vertex operators and their Fourier transforms in accelerated time (string response functions) are computed and their thermal properties analyzed.  相似文献

The higher order corrections to the two-dimensional nonlinear σ-model for the heterotic string are considered. The divergent parts of the effective action are calculated explicitly to two-loop order in the presence of arbitrary background gauge fields. It is shown that the full gauge Chern-Simons term appears in the divergent terms. We also discuss its relevance to the equations of motion for the massless modes of the heterotic string with emphasis on the local gauge invariance of the heterotic string theory.  相似文献

Cosmological implications on the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation, of a Kalb–Ramond field interacting with gauge fields and gravity as dictated by quantum consistency of heterotic string theory are surveyed. A parity violating augmentation going beyond the dictates of string theory is shown to lead to possible appearance of a B mode generated in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in the post-last scattering epoch. This generation of the B mode of CMB appears to be dramatic when the augmentation is embedded within a Randall–Sundrum braneworld scenario of the first kind.  相似文献

Based on our previous work on the differential geometry for the closed string double field theory, we construct a Yang-Mills action which is covariant under O(D,D) T-duality rotation and invariant under three-types of gauge transformations: non-Abelian Yang-Mills, diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetries. In double field formulation, in a manifestly covariant manner our action couples a single O(D,D) vector potential to the closed string double field theory. In terms of undoubled component fields, it couples a usual Yang-Mills gauge field to an additional one-form field and also to the closed string background fields which consist of a dilaton, graviton and a two-form gauge field. Our resulting action resembles a twisted Yang-Mills action.  相似文献

For the three-string baryon model (Y configuration), the known exact solution to the classical equations of motion that describes the rotational motion of the system at a constant speed is investigated for stability. In the spectrum of small perturbations of this solution, modes growing exponentially with time are found, whereby the instability of rotational motion is proven for the Y configuration. This result is confirmed within an alternative approach that makes it possible to determine the classical motion of the system from a specific initial position and initial velocities of string points. A comparison of the Y configuration with the model of a relativistic string with massive ends, in which case rotational motion is stable in the linear approximation, aids in revealing the most adequate string model from the point of view of describing baryon excitations on Regge trajectories.  相似文献

The observable gravitational and electromagnetic parameters of an electron determine that its background should be the Kerr-Newman (KN) solution of the rotating black hole without horizons. This metric has a topological defect—the Kerr singular ring which, as we show, is a closed heterotic string of the Compton radius a = ?/(2m). We show that the Dirac equation emerges as a consequence of the underlying KN gravity and string theory. Regularization of the KN solution leads to a model of gravitating soliton of the oscillon type, in which the closed heterotic string is positioned on the edge rim of a disklike vacuum bubble. It is suggested that the string-like core of the electron should be experimentally observable by the novel methods of the “Deeply Virtual (nonforward) Compton scattering”.  相似文献
