This study was focused on evaluating the suitability of a wide range of lignins, a natural polymer isolated from different plant sources and chemical extractions, in replacing 20 wt.% of petroleum-based polyol in the formulation of PU flexible foams. The main goal was to investigate the effect of unmodified lignin incorporation on the foam’s structural, mechanical, and thermal properties. The hydroxyl contents of the commercial lignins were measured using phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (31P NMR) spectroscopy, molar mass distributions with gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermal properties with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. The results showed that incorporating 20 wt.% lignin increased tensile, compression, tear propagation strengths, thermal stability, and the support factor of the developed PU flexible foams. Additionally, statistical analysis of the results showed that foam properties such as density and compression force deflection were positively correlated with lignin’s total hydroxyl content. Studying correlations between lignin properties and the performance of the developed lignin-based PU foams showed that lignins with low hydroxyl content, high flexibility (low Tg), and high solubility in the co-polyol are better candidates for partially substituting petroleum-based polyols in the formulation of flexible PU foams intended for the automotive applications.  相似文献

In this work, to elucidate why the acid-pretreated bamboo shows disappointingly low enzymatic digestibility comparing to the alkali-pretreated bamboo, residual lignins in acid-pretreated and kraft pulped bamboo were isolated and analyzed by adsorption isotherm to evaluate their extents of nonproductive enzyme adsorption. Meanwhile, physicochemical properties of the isolated lignins were analyzed and a relationship was established with non-productive adsorption. Results showed that the adsorption affinity and binding strength of cellulase on acid-pretreated bamboo lignin (MWLa) was significantly higher than that on residual lignin in pulped bamboo (MWLp). The maximum adsorption capacity of cellulase on MWLp was 129.49 mg/g lignin, which was lower than that on MWLa (160.25 mg/g lignin). When isolated lignins were added into the Avicel hydrolysis solution, the inhibitory effect on enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of MWLa was found to be considerably stronger than that with MWLp. The cellulase adsorption on isolated lignins was correlated positively with hydrophobicity, phenolic hydroxyl group, and degree of condensation but negatively with surface charges and aliphatic hydroxyl group. These results suggest that the higher nonproductive cellulase adsorption and physicochemical properties of residual lignin in acid-pretreated bamboo may be responsible for its disappointingly low enzymatic digestibility.  相似文献

A new method for the synthesis of lignin-based liquid polyols was developed. Organosolv lignin was reacted with ethylene carbonate in polyethylene glycol as solvent, leading to a full conversion of the phenolic OH into primary aliphatic OH groups. These aromatic polyols are obtained in a single step, without any purification. Upon modification of the polyethylene glycol molar mass, a wide range of hydroxyl values (IOH) can be covered. The polyols with up to 30%wt lignin have a viscosity suitable for the direct elaboration of polyurethane (PUR) foams. The method presents significant advantages over oxypropylation, the most common method for producing lignin-based polyols since it is performed at ambient pressure, without any toxic chemicals, does not require purification or post treatment, and allows to produce polyols with tunable properties. Four different aromatic polyols were then synthesized to produce rigid PUR foams, with substitution of up to 100% of a standard polyether polyol. The developed polyols showed very high reactivity, allowing to reduce the catalyst content in the PUR formulation by 75%. Rigid PUR foams prepared with 25% substitution of the standard polyol showed properties in the range of commercial PUR foams, with more than 90% closed cells and thermal conductivity of about 25 mW m?1/K, perfectly adequate for thermal insulation applications.  相似文献

Several efforts have been dedicated to the development of lignin-based polyurethanes (PU) in recent years. The low and heterogeneous reactivity of lignin hydroxyl groups towards diisocyanates, arising from their highly complex chemical structure, limits the application of this biopolymer in PU synthesis. Besides the well-known differences in the reactivity of aliphatic and aromatic hydroxyl groups, experimental work in which the reactivity of both types of hydroxyl, especially the aromatic ones present in syringyl (S-unit), guaiacyl (G-unit), and p-hydroxyphenyl (H-unit) building units are considered and compared, is still lacking in the literature. In this work, the hydroxyl reactivity of two kraft lignin grades towards 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) was investigated. 31P NMR allowed the monitoring of the reactivity of each hydroxyl group in the lignin structure. FTIR spectra revealed the evolution of peaks related to hydroxyl consumption and urethane formation. These results might support new PU developments, including the use of unmodified lignin and the synthesis of MDI-functionalized biopolymers or prepolymers.  相似文献

Nonionic surfactants could effectively improve the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of lignocellulose, while small molecule anionic and cationic surfactants usually inhibited the enzymatic hydrolysis. The results showed that the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) could improve the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of Avicel at the concentration range of 0.1–1 mM, but it did inhibit enzymatic hydrolysis at higher concentration. Cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used to regulate the surface charge of SDS; thereby catanionic surfactant SDS-CTAB was formed. The effect of SDS-CTAB catanionic surfactant with varied molar ratios on the enzymatic hydrolysis of pure cellulose and corn stover at various enzymatic hydrolysis environments was investigated. SDS-CTAB could increase the enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover at high solid loading from 33.3 to 42.4%. Using SDS-CTAB could reduce about 58% of the cellulase dosage to achieve 80% of the enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover. SDS-CTAB catanionic surfactant could regulate the surface charge of cellulase in the hydrolyzate and reduce the non-productive adsorption of cellulase on the lignin, thereby improving the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of lignocellulose.  相似文献

Three pretreated corn stover (ammonia fiber expansion, dilute acid, and dilute alkali) were used as carbon source to culture Trichoderma reesei Rut C-30 for cellulase and xylanase production. The results indicated that the cultures on ammonia fiber expansion and alkali pretreated corn stover had better enzyme production than the acid pretreated ones. The consequent enzymatic hydrolysis was performed applying fungal enzymes on pretreated corn stover samples. Tukey’s statistical comparisons exhibited that there were significant differences on enzymatic hydrolysis among different combination of fungal enzymes and pretreated corn stover. The higher sugar yields were achieved by the enzymatic hydrolysis of dilute alkali pretreated corn stover.  相似文献

The relationships between biomass composition, water retention value (WRV), settling volume and enzymatic glucose yield and enzyme binding is investigated in this work by employing grasses pretreated with combinations of alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) delignification and liquid hot water pretreatment that result in significant alterations of cell wall properties and subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis yields. Specifically, these cell wall treatments are performed on corn stover and switchgrass to generate material with a range of lignin (6–35 %) and xylan (2–28 %) contents as well as a range of other properties such as carboxylic acid content, water binding affinity and swellability. It was determined that WRV and settling volume are predictors of glucose yield (R2 = 0.900 and 0.895 respectively) over the range of materials and treatment conditions used. It was also observed that mild AHP delignification can result in threefold increases in the WRV. Dynamic vapor sorption isotherms demonstrated that AHP-delignified corn stover exhibited an increased affinity for water sorption from the vapor phase relative to untreated corn stover. These results indicate that these water properties may be useful proxies for biomass susceptibility to enzymatic deconstruction.  相似文献

As the second most abundant biopolymer, lignin remains underutilized in various industrial applications. Various forms of lignin generated from different methods affect its physical and chemical properties to a certain extent. To promote the broader commercial utilization of currently available industrial lignins, lignin sulfonate (SL), kraft lignin (KL), and organosolv lignin (OL) are utilized to partially replace phenol in the synthesis of phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesives. The impact of lignin production process on the effectiveness of lignin-based phenolic (LPF) adhesives is examined based on the structural analysis of the selected industrial lignin. The results show that OL has more phenolic hydroxyl groups, lower molecular weight, and greater number of reactive sites than the other two types of lignins. The maximum replacement rate of phenol by OL reaches 70% w/w, resulting in organosolv lignin phenolic (OLPF) adhesives with a viscosity of 960 mPa·s, a minimal free formaldehyde content of 0.157%, and a shear strength of 1.84 MPa. It exhibits better performance compared with the other two types of lignin-based adhesives and meets the requirements of national standards.  相似文献

Corn stover is an abundant, promising raw material for fuel ethanol production. Although it has a high cellulose content, without pretreatment it resists enzymatic hydrolysis, like most lignocellulosic materials. Wet oxidation (water, oxygen, mild alkali or acid, elevated temperature and pressure) was investigated to enhance the enzymatic digestibility of corn stover. Six different combinations of reaction temperature, time, and pH were applied. The best conditions (60g/L of corn stover, 195°C, 15 min, 12 bar O2, 2 g/L of Na2CO3) increased the enzymatic conversion of corn stover four times, compared to untreated material. Under these conditions 60% of hemicellulose and 30% of lignin were solubilized, whereas 90% of cellulose remained in the solid fraction. After 24-h hydrolysis at 50°C using 25 filter paper units (FPU)/g of dry matter (DM) biomass, the achieved conversion of cellulose to glucose was about 85%. Decreasing the hydrolysis temperature to 40°C increased hydrolysis time from 24 to 72 h. Decreasing the enzyme loading to 5 FPU/g of DM biomass slightly decreased the enzymatic conversion from 83.4 to 71%. Thus, enzyme loading can be reduced without significantly affecting the efficiency of hydrolysis, an important economical aspect.  相似文献

Soaking in aqueous ammonia at moderate temperatures was investigated as a method of pretreatment for enzymatic hydrolysis as well as simultaneous saccharification and cofermentation (SSCF) of corn stover. The method involves batch treatment of the feedstock with aqueous ammonia (15-30 wt%) at 40-90 degrees C for 6-24 h. The optimum treatment conditions were found to be 15 wt% of NH(3), 60 degrees C, 1:6 of solid-to-liquid ratio, and 12 h of treatment time. The treated corn stover retained 100% glucan and 85% of xylan, but removed 62% of lignin. The enzymatic digestibility of the glucan content increased from 17 to 85% with 15 FPU/g-glucan enzyme loading, whereas the digestibility of the xylan content increased to 78%. The treated corn stover was also subjected to SSCF test using Spezyme-CP and recombinant Escherichia coli (KO11). The SSCF of the soaking in aqueous ammonia treated corn stover resulted in an ethanol concentration of 19.2 g/L from 3% (w/v) glucan loading, which corresponds to 77% of the maximum theoretical yield based on glucan and xylan.  相似文献

An integrated wet-milling and alkali pretreatment was applied to corn stover prior to enzymatic hydrolysis. The effects of NaOH concentration in the pretreatment on crystalline structure, chemical composition, and reducing-sugar yield of corn stover were investigated, and the mechanism of increasing reducing-sugar yield by the pretreatment was discussed. The experimental results showed that the crystalline structure of corn stover was disrupted, and lignin was removed, while cellulose and hemicellulose were retained in corn stover by the pretreatment with 1% NaOH in 1 h. The reducing-sugar yield from the pretreated corn stovers increased from 20.2% to 46.7% when the NaOH concentration increased from 0% to 1%. The 1% NaOH pretreated corn stover had a holocellulose conversion of 55.1%. The increase in reducing-sugar yield was related to the crystalline structure disruption and delignification of corn stover. It was clarified that the pretreatment significantly enhanced the conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose in the corn stover to sugars.  相似文献

Environmentally compatible polymers such as poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and polyurethane (PU) derivatives from PCL's were synthesized from saccharides, polysaccharides and lignins such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, cellulose, cellulose acetate, alcoholysis lignin, kraft lignin and sodium lignosulfonate. Flexible and rigid PU sheets and foams were also prepared by the reaction of OH groups of saccharides and lignins with isocyanates such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). Glass transition temperatures (Tg's), cold-crystallization temperatures (Tcc's) and melting temperatures (Tm's) of saccharide- and lignin-based PCL's and PU's were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and phase diagrams were obtained. Methods of controlling mechanical properties such as stress and elasticity of PU's through changing thermal properties such as glass transition temperature were established. Thermogravimetry (TG) and TG-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) were also carried out in order to analyze the degradation temperature and evolved gases from the above obtained polymers. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Addition of additives has been confirmed to increase cellulase performance in the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials. In the hydrolysis of xylan-containing lignocellulosic biomass, xylanase can synergistically enhance the performance of cellulase. However, the role of additives in xylan hydrolysis by xylanase is not yet clear. In this work, with the presence of additives (bovine serum albumin, poly(ethylene glycol), and Tween), the hydrolysis of isolated xylan and the xylan in corn stover increased to different extents. Additives increased free xylanase in supernatants in the hydrolysis with xylanase, indicating the reduction of the adsorption of xylanase on corn stover and insoluble xylan. Enhanced hydrolysis of Avicel and corn stover by additives suggested that besides the prevention of unproductive binding of xylanase to lignin by additives, reducing the adsorption of xylanase on substrates was also contributed to enzymatic hydrolysis. The increment of xylanase activity by additives suggests that the additives were activators of xylanase. The results of this work indicate that the supplementation of additives could improve xylanase performance, synergistically enhanced the cellulose hydrolysis, and beneficial for the recycling of xylanase.  相似文献

Pretreatment of corn stover with alkaline peroxide (AP) at pH 11.5 resulted in reduction of lignin content in the residual solids as a function of increasing batch temperature. Scanning electron microscopy of these materials revealed notably more textured surfaces on the plant cell walls as a result of the delignifying pretreatment. As expected, digestion of the delignified samples with commercial cellulase preparations showed an inverse relationship between the content of lignin present in the residual solids after pretreatment and the extent of both glucan and xylan conversion achievable. Digestions with purified enzymes revealed that decreased lignin content in the pretreated solids did not significantly impact the extent of glucan conversion achievable by cellulases alone. Not until purified xylanolytic activities were included with the cellulases were significant improvements in glucan conversion realized. In addition, an inverse relationship was observed between lignin content after pretreatment and the extent of xylan conversion achievable in a 24-h period with the xylanolytic enzymes in the absence of the cellulases. This observation, coupled with the direct relationship between enzymatic xylan and glucan conversion observed in a number of cases, suggests that the presence of lignins may not directly occlude cellulose present in lignocelluloses but rather impact cellulase action indirectly by its association with xylan.  相似文献

Chemical pretreatments of corn stover for enhancing enzymatic digestibility   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Corn stover, the most abundant agricultural residue in Hungary, is a potential raw material for the production of fuel ethanol as a result of its high content of carbohydrates, but a pretreatment is required for its efficient hydrolysis. In this article, we describe the results using various chemicals such as dilute H2SO4, HCl, and NaOH separately as well as consecutively under relative mild conditions (120°C, 1h). Pretreatment with 5% H2SO4 or 5% HCl solubilized 85% of the hemicellulose fraction, but the enzymatic conversion of pretreated materials increased only two times compared to the untreated corn stover. Applying acidic pretreatment following a 1-d soaking in base achieved enzymatic conversion that was nearly the theoretical maximum (95.7%). Pretreatment with 10% NaOH decreased the lignin fraction >95%, increased the enzymatic conversion more than four times, and gave a 79.4% enzymatic conversion. However, by increasing the reaction time, the enzymatic degradability could also be increased significantly, using a less concentrated base. When the time of pretreatment was increased three times (0.5% NaOH at 120°C), the amount of total released sugars was 47.9 g from 100 g (dry matter) of untreated corn stover.  相似文献

The utilization of biorefinery lignins as a renewable resource for the production of bio-based chemicals and materials remain a challenge because of the high polysaccharide content of this variety of lignins. This study provides two simple methods; (i) the alkaline hydrolysis-acid precipitation method and (ii) the acid hydrolysis method for the removal of polysaccharides from polymeric biorefinery lignin samples. Both purification strategies are optimized for two different hardwood hydrolysis lignins, HL1 and HL2, containing 15.1% and 10.1% of polysaccharides, respectively. The treated lignins are characterized by polysaccharide content, molecular weight, hydroxyl content, and Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Preliminary techno-economic calculations are also carried out for both purification processes to assess the economic potential of these technologies. The results indicate that both protocols could be used for the purification of HL1 and HL2 hydrolysis lignins because of the minimal polysaccharide content obtained in the treated lignins. Nevertheless, from an industrial and economic perspective the acid hydrolysis technology using low acid concentrations and high temperatures is favored over the alkaline hydrolysis-acid precipitation strategy.  相似文献

Varying ionic liquid, 1-ethyl 3-methyl imidazolium acetate, pretreatment incubation temperature on lignocellulosic biomass substrates, corn stover, switchgrass and poplar, can have dramatic effects on the enzymatic digestibility of the resultant regenerated biomass. In order to delineate the chemical and physical changes resulting from the pretreatment process and correlate changes with enzymatic digestibility, X-ray powder and fiber diffraction, 13C cross polarization/magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and compositional analysis was completed on poplar, corn stover and switchgrass samples. Optimal pretreatment incubation temperatures were most closely associated with the retention of amorphous substrates upon drying of regenerated biomass. Maximal glucan to glucose conversion for 24 h enzyme hydrolysis was observed for corn stover, switchgrass and poplar at ionic liquid incubation temperatures of 100, 110 and 120 °C, respectively. We hypothesize that effective pretreatment temperatures must attain lignin redistribution and retention of xylan for optimal enzyme digestibility.  相似文献

It has previously been shown that the improved digestibility of dilute acid pretreated corn stover is at least partially due to the removal of xylan and the consequent increase in accessibility of the cellulose to cellobiohydrolase enzymes. We now report on the impact that lignin removal has on the accessibility and digestibility of dilute acid pretreated corn stover. Samples of corn stover were subjected to dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment with and without simultaneous (partial) lignin removal. In addition, some samples were completely delignified after the pretreatment step using acidified sodium chlorite. The accessibility and digestibility of the samples were tested using a fluorescence-labeled cellobiohydrolase (Trichoderma reesei Cel7A) purified from a commercial cellulase preparation. Partial delignification of corn stover during dilute acid pretreatment was shown to improve cellulose digestibility by T. reesei Cel7A; however, decreasing the lignin content below 5% (g g−1) by treatment with acidified sodium chlorite resulted in a dramatic reduction in cellulose digestibility. Importantly, this effect was found to be enhanced in samples with lower xylan contents suggesting that the near complete removal of xylan and lignin may cause aggregation of the cellulose microfibrils resulting in decreased cellulase accessibility.  相似文献

In an effort to utilize NMR technique for the analysis of the structural components of wood and biomasses such as lignin, we made a comparative study of lignin contents of several types of lignocellulosic materials both before and after enzymatic hydrolyses. To this end, Eucalyptus Globulus, Norway spruce thermomechanical pulp(TMP) corn stover and Eucalyptus kraft pulp were ball-milled and treated with cellulase to prepare materials with high lignin contents. These materials were analyzed via 31P NMR in ionic liquids. The results show that the contents of various functional groups for the lignocellulosic materials after enzymatic hydrolyses are generally in agreement with those from their corresponding enzymatic mild acidolysis liginins(EMALs), indicating that 31P NMR analysis of lignocellulosic materials in ionic liquids is a promising method for quantitative characterization of lignocellulosic materials.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the sound absorption properties of rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) produced from crude glycerol (CG) and/or liquefied coffee grounds derived polyol (POL). The lignin content of POL proved to have a major influence on the structure and mechanical properties of the foams. Indeed, the POL content increased the cell size of the foams and their stiffness, which subsequently influenced the sound absorption coefficients. The POL derived foam has slightly higher sound absorption coefficient values at lower frequencies, while the CG foam has higher sound absorption coefficient values at higher frequencies. In turn, the foam prepared using a 50/50 mixture of polyols presents slightly higher sound absorption coefficient values in the medium frequencies range due to a balance between the cell structure and the mechanical properties. The results obtained seem to suggest that the mechanisms involved in sound wave absorption depend on the formulation used to prepare the foams. Additionally higher POL contents improved the thermal stability of PUFs as well as their mechanical properties. From this work the suitability of CG and/or POL derived PUFs as sound absorbing materials has been proven.  相似文献
