An intermediate surface hexatic phase between the liquid and the crystalline phases has been found for the first time in a lyotropic lamellar liquid-crystal system. This phase is highly unusual in that it has long-range sixfold bond-orientational order but liquidlike nearest-neighbor positional correlations, and could represent a significant departure from our current understanding of defect-mediated melting in two dimensions.  相似文献

A discontinuity wall in smectic A liquid crystals was discussed in M. Kléman:Points, Lines and Walls in Liquid Crystals, Magnetic Systems and Various Ordered Media (J. Wiley, Chichester, 1983). Possible solutions describing a singularity — twist disclination which terminates the discontinuity wall in an infinite model smectic A liquid crystal are discussed. One of solutions proposed can be used to describe the so-called zigzag defect line in chiral smectic C liquid crystals on which opposite oriented chevrons are terminated. Molecular simulations for simple fluids in narrow slit-shaped carbon pores exhibit crystal-hexatic and hexatic-liquid transitions that are consistent with Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory. The temperature range over which the hexatic phase is stable is dramatically widened under confinement. Remarkably, the transitions, which are continuous for a single adsorbed layer, become weakly first order when the pore can accommodate two molecular layers. Nonlinear dielectric effect measurements for CCl4 and aniline in activated carbon fibers (pore width 1.4 nm) show divergence at these transitions, confirming the hexatic phase.  相似文献

We report the first observation of an electroclinical effect at the TGB-TGB transition induced by an external DC electric field applied perpendicular to the pitch direction. Upon increasing the field, the smectic layers rather than the director field tilt over relative to the helical axis, allowing to detect the effect by X-ray scattering from well aligned samples. The observations are qualitatively interpreted in the frame of a mean field phenomenological model of a helically modulated electroclinical effect. A comprehensive review of the recent developments regarding the phenomenon of reentrant phase transitions (RPT) in liquid crystals is presented. In addition to liquid crystals this phenomenon has been observed in amazingly diverse systems. A critical assessment of the experimental investigations concerning single and multiple reentrances is given. A brief account of the theoretical efforts is also given. 文章描述了胆甾相液晶中蓝相的研究现况.蓝相(BP)是液晶中具有特殊性质的一个相态,它的序参量表现出三维空间周期性.蓝相是出现在一个狭小的温度间隔里(量级为0.1—1K)的稳定相态.文章对已观察到的BPⅠ,BPⅡ,BPⅢ(“雾”相)的性质做了简要的叙述.对研究液晶蓝相的主要理论——Ginzburg-Landau理论(唯象理论)作了介绍,并指出了蓝相研究的实际物理意义。  相似文献

The birefringence of liquid-crystalline phases is the result of the parallel order of molecules exhibiting a polarizability anisotropy. The magnitude and sign of the birefringence are determined by the structure and order of the liquid-crystalline phase types as well as by the polarizability properties of the constituent molecules. The characteristic change of the birefringence at phase transitions between liquid-crystalline phases indicates more or less pronounced structural changes. The temperature dependence of the birefringence is due to the temperature change of the molecular order.

It is shown that the structural variety of the liquid crystalline state is reflected by a big variety of their optical anisotropy properties.  相似文献

A theoretical study is made of the process by which an antiferroelectric smectic liquid crystal undergoes a field-induced transition to ferroelectric alignment. We find that for cells of moderate thickness the initial departure from antiferroelectric alignment occurs as a continuous Fréedericksz transition. The following transition from partial alignment to complete ferroelectric ordering may occur as either a first-order or continuous transition, depending on the relative strength of some of the model parameters. The case where the transition is continuous provides a possible mechanism for some recently observed thresholdless transitions in these systems.  相似文献

This review is an attempt towards a unified picture of the direct transitions from the isotropic liquid to ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystalline phases formed by rod-like and bent-core molecules. The Landau–Ginzburg theories of the phase transitions between the isotropic liquid to ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystalline phases in compounds composed of chiral rod-like molecules and achiral bent-core molecules are presented. This includes a discussion of the nature of the order parameters and the nature of the various types of phase transitions. We present a coarse-grained model in order to describe the unusual sequence of mesophases observed in aqueous solutions of nonionic lipids, such as monoolein. The lipid molecules are modeled as a rigid head and a flexible Gaussian tail, and water is treated explicitly. A key component of the model is thermally reversible hydrogen bonding between the lipid head and water resulting in changes in both head volume and the interactions of the hydrated head with its surroundings. Phase diagrams obtained from unit-cell self-consistent field simulations capture the qualitative thermotropic and lyotropic phase behavior of the monoolein-water system. The unusual phase sequences result from a competition between hydrogen bond formation, changes in head volume and interactions, lipid tail entropy, and the hydrophobic effect.  相似文献

Structures and properties of different types of liquid crystals are discussed from a uniform point of view. Apart from the traditional mesophases (nematics, cholesterics, smectics), some new examples, including polymeric, metalloorganic and ferromagnetic liquid crystals, are also investigated. Systems with several macroscopic scales on which the type of ordering may differ, are described and analysed.
