We report the observation of a new type of columnar liquid crystal phase, which is formed by thin hard colloidal disks in a dense suspension. High-resolution small-angle x-ray diffraction reveals a combination of long-range bond-orientational order and short-range translational order between the columns, the hallmark of the hexatic phase. Our results imply that geometric frustration related to the size polydispersity of the particles destroys long-range translational order and therefore promotes the formation of this novel phase.  相似文献

We report a study of colloidal suspensions of highly monodisperse semiflexible chiral rodlike viruses, denoted fd, in the range of high concentrations. Small angle x-ray scattering experiments reveal the existence of two hexagonal phases: the first one is crystalline and the second one is hexatic columnar, as shown by its short-range positional order. The suspension of rodlike viruses is the first experimental system showing the whole phase sequence with increasing particle concentration theoretically predicted for systems of hard rods, ranging from the chiral nematic via the smectic to columnar and crystalline phases.

An intermediate surface hexatic phase between the liquid and the crystalline phases has been found for the first time in a lyotropic lamellar liquid-crystal system. This phase is highly unusual in that it has long-range sixfold bond-orientational order but liquidlike nearest-neighbor positional correlations, and could represent a significant departure from our current understanding of defect-mediated melting in two dimensions.  相似文献

A hexagonal columnar crystal undergoes a shear-melting transition above a critical shear rate or stress. We combine the analysis of the shear-thinning regime below the melting with that of synchrotron x-ray scattering data under shear and propose the melting to be due to a proliferation of dislocations, whose density is determined by both techniques to vary as a power law of the shear rate with a 2/3 exponent, as expected for a creep model of crystalline solids. Moreover, our data suggest the existence under shear of a line hexatic phase, between the columnar crystal and the liquid phase.  相似文献

Using surface x-ray diffraction, we have determined the structure of liquid Bi monolayers on Cu(111) for a range of coverages. By combining diffuse scattering data from the liquid with information from the substrate scattering, the ordering properties of Bi have been fully determined. Even though the substrate is hexagonal, we find that the liquid does not show hexatic order but has an orthorhombic orientational order that occurs in three domains. Simultaneously, Bi has partial solidlike properties, even well above its melting point.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulation is used to investigate the crystallization of a classical two-dimensional electron system, in which electrons interact with the Coulomb repulsion. From the positional and the orientational correlation functions, we have found an indication that the solid phase has a quasi-long-range (power-law correlated) positional order and a long-range orientational order. This implies that the long-range 1/r system shares the absence of the true long-range crystalline order at finite temperatures with short-range ones to which Mermin's theorem applies. We also discuss the existence of the “hexatic” phase predicted by the Kosterlitz–Thouless–Halperin–Nelson–Young theory.  相似文献

In this Letter we report on a near collective x-ray scattering experiment on shock-compressed targets. A highly coupled Al plasma was generated and probed by spectrally resolving an x-ray source forward scattered by the sample. A significant reduction in the intensity of the elastic scatter was observed, which we attribute to the formation of an incipient long-range order. This speculation is confirmed by x-ray scattering calculations accounting for both electron degeneracy and strong coupling effects. Measurements from rear side visible diagnostics are consistent with the plasma parameters inferred from x-ray scattering data. These results give the experimental evidence of the strongly coupled ionic dynamics in dense plasmas.  相似文献

In this paper, we report results from synchrotron X-ray scattering studies of thefluid/hexactic/solid phases and phase transitions in both very thick and very thin, freely suspended films of tilted hexatic liquid crystals. Contrary to the thick film case, the higher Fourier coefficients describing the bond orientational order are suppressed in very thin films. This suppression is consistent with a two-dimensional bond orientational order parameter, 6, rather than the three-dimensional bond orientational order parameter found in very thick films. For a film containing twently-three (23) smectic layers we find that 6 is two-dimensional whereas the positional order in the crystallineS J phase is three-dimensional. We present an analysis of the thick film data in terms of the three-dimensionalXY-model and a new mean field theory model which incorporates explicitly the quasi two-dimensional nature of bulk smectic phases.  相似文献

We show that discotics, lying deep in the columnar phase, can exhibit an x-ray scattering pattern which mimics that of a somewhat unusual smectic liquid crystal. This exotic, new glassy phase of columnar liquid crystals, which we call a "hybrid columnar Bragg glass," can be achieved by confining a columnar liquid crystal in an anisotropic random environment of, e.g., strained aerogel. Long-ranged orientational order in this phase makes single-domain x-ray scattering possible, from which a wealth of information could be extracted. We give detailed quantitative predictions for the scattering pattern in addition to exponents characterizing anomalous elasticity of the system.  相似文献

The intriguing thermophysical properties of CeB6 have been subject to investigation for more than 20 years. In particular, an exotic ground state, phase IV, emerges under doping with La. We report resonant x-ray scattering results on the order parameter symmetries in phase IV of Ce0.7La0.3B6, which condenses below T(IV)=1.5 K. The results reveal a degree of mesoscopic 5d dipole antiferromagnetic order, with propagation vector Q0=(1/2 1/2 1/2), both below and above T(IV). Below T(IV), this polarization coexists with long-range 4f antiferro-octupole (AFO) order also at Q0. The marked differences in temperature dependence and spatial correlation suggest a state of order parameter segregation at low temperature. A simple model of AFO order, consistent with the polarization dependent azimuth symmetries, the Bragg angle, and temperature dependence is given.  相似文献

We present the results of an extensive single-crystal neutron scattering study of the ferroelastic phase transition in [Formula: see text]. This material has previously been demonstrated to undergo a continuous loss of long-range order at its ferroelastic transition, which is the phenomenon known as lattice melting. We show that our data are consistent with a special form of lattice melting where the long-range order appears to be destroyed in a two-dimensional sense, but is preserved in the third dimension.  相似文献

We present the results of resonant x-ray scattering experiments on KCuF3. Structurally forbidden reflections, corresponding to magnetic and 3d-orbital long-range order, have been observed. Integrated intensities have been measured as a function of incident energy, polarization, azimuthal angle, and temperature. The results give evidence for a strong coupling between orbital and spin degrees of freedom. The interplay between magnetic and orbital order parameters is revealed by the temperature dependence of the intensity of orbital Bragg peaks.  相似文献

The long-range order parameters in single crystals of hard colloidal spheres grown in sediments of colloid-polymer mixtures are determined using synchrotron small-angle x-ray diffraction with a resolution of 10(-6) of the wave vector. The interplanar positional order derived from the width of lattice reflections extends over at least 500 lattice planes. The lattice planes are orientationally correlated within approximately 0.1 degrees throughout the crystals, whereas the stacking of hexagonal planes remains random.  相似文献

The instability of the long-range positional order in smectic A and C liquid crystals under thermal fluctuations is discussed, along with the nematic-smectic A phase transition. The correlation function of the density fluctuations is calculated. It is shown that the long-range orientational order of a layered structure is stable.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 8, pp. 32–36, August, 1978.  相似文献

We report the results of resonant x-ray scattering experiments performed at the Np M(4,5) edges in NpO2. Below T(0)=25 K, the development of long-range order of Np electric quadrupoles is revealed by the growth of superlattice Bragg peaks. The polarization and azimuthal dependence of the intensity of the resonant peaks are well reproduced assuming anisotropic tensor susceptibility scattering from a triple-q(-->) longitudinal antiferroquadrupolar structure. Electric-quadrupole order in NpO2 could be driven by the ordering at T0 of magnetic octupoles of Gamma(5) symmetry, splitting the Np ground state quartet and leading to a singlet ground state with zero dipole-magnetic moment.  相似文献

The results of numerical simulations of strongly-coupled two-dimensional dissipative Yukawa systems are presented. The thermodynamic characteristics of these systems were studied, namely the internal energy, the specific heat and the entropy. For the first time, it is discovered that the considered characteristics have two singular points on the melting line; one of these points corresponds to the first-order phase transition from crystal to the hexatic phase, and another point corresponds to the second-order phase transition from the hexatic phase to the isotropic liquid. The obtained results are compared to the existing numerical and analytical data.  相似文献

Using high-resolution x-ray scattering, we have demonstrated the existence of quenched disordered charge stripes in a single crystal of La (5/3)Sr (1/3)NiO (4) at low temperatures. Above the second-order transition critical scattering was observed due to fluctuations into the charge stripe phase. The charge stripes are shown to be two dimensional in nature both by measurements of their correlation lengths (xi(a) approximately 185 A, xi(b) = 400 A, and xi(c) approximately 25 A) and by the critical exponents of the charge strip transition. The charge stripe ordering did not develop long-range order even at low temperatures, indicating that the charge stripes are disordered and that the length scale of the disorder is quenched.  相似文献
