2D array design based on Fermat spiral for ultrasound imaging 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The main challenge faced by 3D ultrasonic imaging with 2D array transducers is the large number of elements required to achieve an acceptable level of quality in the images. Therefore, the optimisation of the array layout, in order to reduce the number of active elements in the aperture, has been a research topic in the last years. Nowadays, array technology has made viable the production of 2D arrays with larger flexibility on elements size, shape and position, allowing to study other configurations different to the classical matrix organisation, such as circular, archimedes spiral or polygonal layout between others. In this work, the problem of designing an imaging system array with large apertures and a very limited number of active elements (Ne=128 and Ne=256) using the Fermat spiral layout has been studied. As summary, a general discussion about the most interesting cases is presented. 相似文献

This study presents a contribution to the tracking of a moving target during high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment. Indeed, HIFU has proved to be highly efficient in inducing homogeneous and reproducible tumor destruction by thermal coagulation necrosis. However, accurate targeting of human abdominal tumors is difficult to maintain due to the motion induced by breathing. An algorithm is presented to track a region of interest of fixed size in a sequence of images. This algorithm was evaluated on synthetic data and on in vivo sequences of ultrasound liver images acquired using 12 MHz ultrasound imaging probe at a rate of 16 frames/s.The algorithm presented here was derived from the non-linear constant brightness assumption. Since the motion was smooth it was possible to reduce the space of admissible displacements; hence the number of unknown parameters was small compared with the size of the data. The optimal displacement was estimated by a Gauss-Newton method, and the matrix required at each step was assembled by reading the data only once. This algorithm was applied to simulated data, where the true displacement was known and a precise evaluation was possible. The relative error was about 2%. The algorithm was also applied to a video sequence of sonograms acquired during in vivo experiments. These trials were conducted on porcine liver since its size and physiology are similar to humans. Movements were induced by breathing and heart-beating. Two particular frequencies representing breathing (0.26 Hz) and heart beat (1.14 Hz) were identified in the estimated displacement and were correlated with the monitored breathing (0.27 Hz) and electrocardiograms (1.28 Hz). In addition, a region of interest (ROI) modeling the focal zone of a HIFU transducer was tracked along time. Therefore this study provides a mean of determining the location of the targeted region in vivo during HIFU treatments. This can be applied to correct the location of the focal zone accordingly. This method can preferentially be applied to the liver or to any other moving organ. 相似文献

In this work we have investigated the effect of curving phase-steered sparse periodic two-dimensional arrays in one direction, and relate this effect to the geometry of the arrays. We have shown that curving is equivalent to removing some of the element periodicity, thus adding some “randomness” to the layout. Compared to flat phase-steered periodically sparse two-dimensional arrays, curving offers an even greater suppression of grating lobes located at directions along the curvature. The class of arrays yielding improved performance due to this suppression of grating lobes has been characterized. The point spread functions of some previously proposed array layouts, shown to be promising for ultrasonic imaging, have been simulated. The arrays have been simulated with various number of elements as well as various focal points, with array and field parameters typical to those in volumetric cardiac imaging. On a 48 × 48 element grid with a transducer center frequency of 3 MHz and the target at 40 mm, reductions in the peak sidelobe level of up to 12 dB were recorded for some critical steering directions, without significant differences in the beamwidth. The integrated sidelobe ratio was also examined, showing an almost equivalent performance as the flat array. This study shows that, without adding any complexity to the system, the overall image quality of a volumetric imaging system can be improved significantly by curving the array in one direction. 相似文献

This work addresses three key subjects to the image quality with phased arrays: timing accuracy, beamforming strategy and post-processing for increased resolution and suppression of grating and side lobes.Timing accuracy is achieved by defining a modular and scalable architecture which guarantees low timing errors, whatever is the system size. The proposed beamforming methodology follows the progressive focusing correction technique, which keeps low focusing errors, provides a high information density and has a simple implementation for real-time imaging in modular architectures. Then, phase coherence imaging is defined to suppress grating and sidelobe indications, simultaneously increasing the lateral resolution. 相似文献

The diagnosis of degenerative changes in human teeth is of general interest because early detections can avoid greater health problems and further weakening effects. Since the wear of teeth determines their stability and lifetime in relation to the physiological load, an ultrasonic survey of any dimensional changes of the enamel layer and especially of the dentin wall thickness may be very helpful. However, an ultrasonographic diagnosis requires first to determine the anisotropic human tooth properties at clinically relevant locations and to simulate wave propagation phenomena in inhomogeneous tooth models with proper dimensions. The first article of a series that provides modular data of mineralized tissues in human teeth at the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) deals with an ultrasonic method for measuring the asymmetry of dimensional characteristics of extracted human teeth and their ultrasonic path lengths (UPL). Heavily attenuating tooth halves were investigated with respect to the symmetry of normal and inclined oppositely directed radial ultrasonic paths. The measured UPLs ranged from 1.2 mm to 4.4 mm. The relative difference in inclined UPLs between the left and the right tooth halves reaches almost 30%. This reveals a large asymmetry. The mean difference of angles that represent fastest path lengths was 2.2+/-8.1 degrees, which indicates large asymmetry and anisotropy. Several aspects, which are required for a proper integration of asymmetric data into models designed for medical element engineering and simulation (MEES), are discussed. 相似文献

This paper presents a passive analysis method for determining the spatio-temporal characteristics of sound fields in small rooms. The analysis finds an approximate directional reflectogram (ADR) which reveals the approximate arrival directions, time delays and amplitudes of the direct sound and early reflections without using a special or known sound source. A coincident microphone array is used to obtain directional recordings. The recordings are analysed by wavelet packet decomposition to determine the direction of the sound source and select wavelet packet coefficients to reconstruct the estimate of the direct sound. ADR is then computed via deconvolution using this estimate. Experiments have been carried out using synthesized recordings that were obtained from actual room impulse responses measured in two rooms for various source locations. The method estimates the source direction with a mean absolute error of about 7°. Calculated ADRs provide a good estimate of the time delays and arrival directions of acoustical reflections, whereas the amplitudes differ slightly. 相似文献

Miniature flat ultrasound transducers have shown to be effective for a large variety of thermal therapies, but the associated superficial heating implicates developing original strategies in order to extend therapeutic depth. The goal of the present paper is to use ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) to increase remote attenuation and heating. Theoretical simulations demonstrated that increasing attenuation from 0.27 to 0.8 Np/cm at 10 MHz beyond a distance of 18 mm from the transducer should result in longer thermal damages due to protein coagulation in a tissue mimicking phantom. Contrast agents (BR14, Bracco, Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland) were embedded in thermo-sensitive gel and attenuations ranging from 0.27 to 1.33 Np/cm were measured at 10 MHz for concentrations of BR14 between 0 and 4.8%. Thermal damages were then induced in several gels, which had different layering configurations. Thermal damages, 12.8 mm in length, were obtained in homogeneous gels. When mixing contrast agents at a concentration of 3.2% beyond a first 18 mm-thick layer of homogeneous gel, the thermal damages reached 21.5 mm in length. This work demonstrated that contrast agents can be used for increasing attenuation remotely and extending therapeutic depth induced by a non-focused transducer. Additional work must be done in vivo in order to verify the remote-only distribution of bubbles and associated increase in attenuation. 相似文献

In Vivo Monitoring of Neovascularization in Tumour Angiogenesis by Photoacoustic Tomography 下载免费PDF全文
Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is presented to in vivo monitor neovascularization in tumour angiogenesis with high resolution and high contrast images in a rat. With a circular scan system, the photoacoustic signal, generated by laser pulses at a wavelength of 532nm from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is captured by a hydrophone with a diameter of 1 mm and a sensitivity of 850nV/Pa. The vascular structure around the rat tumour is imaged clearly, with optimal contrast, because blood has strong absorption near this wavelength. Serial noninvasive photoacoustic images of neovascularization in tumour angiogenesis are also obtained consecutively from a growing tumour implanted under the skin of a rat over a period of two weeks. This work demonstrates that PAT can potentially provide a powerful tool for tumour angiogenesis detection in cancer research. It will bring us closer to clinical applications for tumour diagnosis and treatment monitoring. 相似文献

The speed of sound in soft tissues is usually assumed to be 1540 m/s in medical pulse-echo ultrasound imaging systems. When the true speed is different, the mismatch can lead to distortions in the acquired images, and so reduce their clinical value. Previously we reported a new method of sound-speed estimation in the context of image deconvolution. Unlike most other sound-speed estimation methods, this enables the use of unmodified ultrasound machines and a normal scanning pattern. Our approach was validated for largely homogeneous media with single sound speeds. In this article, we demonstrate that sound speeds of dual-layered media can also be estimated through image deconvolution. An ultrasound simulator has been developed for layered media assuming that, for moderate speed differences, the reflection at the interface may be neglected. We have applied our dual-layer algorithm to simulations and in vitro phantoms. The speed of the top layer is estimated by our aforesaid method for homogeneous media. Then, when the layer boundary position is known, a series of deconvolutions are carried out with dual-layered point-spread functions having different lower-layer speeds. The best restoration is selected using a correlation metric. The error level (e.g., a mean error of −9 m/s with a standard deviation of 16 m/s) for in vitro phantoms is found to be not as good as that of our single-speed algorithm, but is comparable to other local speed estimation methods where the data acquisition may not be as simple as in our proposed method. 相似文献

Cavitation bubble clouds generated near a tissue boundary by high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) were studied using high-speed photography. In all, 171 image series were captured during the initial 100 ms of continuous HIFU exposure, which showed that cavitation bubble clouds at the tissue boundary organized into two structures - “cone-shape bubble cloud structure” recorded in 146 image series and “crown-shape bubble cloud structure” recorded in 18 image series. The remaining 7 image series showed the interchanging of these two structures. It was found that when cavitation bubbles first appeared at the tissue boundary, they developed to cone-shape bubble cloud. The cone-shape bubble cloud structure was characterized by a nearly fixed tip in front of the tissue boundary. When the cavitation bubbles initially appeared away from the tissue boundary they evolved into a crown-shape bubble cloud. Deformation of tissue boundary was shown in all the recorded image series. 相似文献

The scattering of ultrasound from bubbles of m radius, such as used in contrast enhancers for ultrasound diagnostics, is studied. We show that sound scattering and “active”
emission of sound from oscillating bubbles are not contradictory, but are just two different aspects derived from the same
physics. Treating the bubble as a nonlinear oscillator, we arrive at general formulas for scattering and absorption cross-sections.
We show that several well-known formulas are recovered in the linear limit of this ansatz. In the case of strongly nonlinear
oscillations, however, the cross-sections can be larger than those for linear response by several orders of magnitude. The
major part of the incident sound energy is then converted into emitted sound, unlike what happens in the linear case, where
the absorption cross-sections exceed the scattering cross-sections.

This paper focuses on motion tracking in echocardiographic ultrasound images. The difficulty of this task is related to the fact that echographic image formation induces decorrelation between the underlying motion of tissue and the observed speckle motion. Since Meunier’s seminal work, this phenomenon has been investigated in many simulation studies as part of speckle tracking or optical flow-based motion estimation techniques. Most of these studies modeled image formation using a linear convolution approach, where the system point-spread function (PSF) was spatially invariant and the probe geometry was linear. While these assumptions are valid over a small spatial area, they constitute an oversimplification when a complete image is considered. Indeed, echocardiographic acquisition geometry relies on sectorial probes and the system PSF is not perfectly invariant, even if dynamic focusing is performed. This study investigated the influence of sectorial geometry and spatially varying PSF on speckle tracking. This was done by simulating a typical 64 elements, cardiac probe operating at 3.5 MHz frequency, using the simulation software Field II. This simulation first allowed quantification of the decorrelation induced by the system between two images when simple motion such as translation or incompressible deformation was applied. We then quantified the influence of decorrelation on speckle tracking accuracy using a conventional block matching (BM) algorithm and a bilinear deformable block matching (BDBM) algorithm. In echocardiography, motion estimation is usually performed on reconstructed images where the initial sectorial (i.e., polar) data are interpolated on a cartesian grid. We therefore studied the influence of sectorial acquisition geometry, by performing block matching on cartesian and polar data.Simulation results show that decorrelation is spatially variant and depends on the position of the region where motion takes place relative to the probe. Previous studies did not consider translation in their experiments, since their simulation model (spatially invariant PSF and linear probe) yields by definition no decorrelation. On the opposite, our realistic simulation settings (i.e., sectorial probe and realistic beamforming) show that translation yields decorrelation, particularly when translation is large (above 6 mm) and when the moving regions is located close to the probe (distance to probe less than 50 mm).The tracking accuracy study shows that tracking errors are larger for the usual cartesian data, whatever the estimation algorithm, indicating that speckle tracking is more reliable when based on the unconverted polar data: for axial translations in the range 0-10 mm, the maximum error associated to conventional block matching (BM) is 4.2 mm when using cartesian data and 1.8 mm for polar data. The corresponding errors are 1.8 mm (cartesian data) and 0.4 mm (polar data) for an applied deformation in the range 0-10%. We also show that accuracy is improved by using the bilinear deformable block matching (BDBM) algorithm. For translation, the maximum error associated to the bilinear deformable block matching is indeed 3.6 mm (cartesian data) and 1.2 mm (polar data). Regarding deformation, the error is 0.7 mm (cartesian data) and 0.3 mm (polar data). These figures also indicates that the larger improvement brought by the bilinear deformable block matching over standard block matching logically takes place when deformation on cartesian data is considered (the error drops from 1.8 to 0.7 mm is this case). We give a preliminary evaluation of this framework on a cardiac sequence acquired with a Toshiba Powervision 6000 imaging system using a probe operating at 3.25 MHz. As ground truth reference motion is not available in this case, motion estimation performance was evaluated by comparing a reference image (i.e., the first image of the sequence) and the subsequent images after motion compensation has been applied. The comparison was quantified by computing the normalized correlation between the reference and the motion-compensated images. The obtained results are consistent with the simulation data: correlation is smaller for cartesian data, whatever the estimation algorithm. The correlation associated to the conventional block matching (BM) is in the range 0.45-0.02 when using cartesian data and in the range 0.65-0.2 for polar data. The corresponding correlation ranges for the bilinear deformable block matching are 0.98-0.2 and 0.98-0.55. In the same way these figures indicate that the bilinear deformable block matching yield a larger improvement when cartesian data are considered (correlation range increases from 0.45-0.02 to 0.98-0.2 in this case). 相似文献

The paper presents and evaluates a speckle detection method for B-scan images. This is a fully automatic method and does not require information about the sensor parameters, which is often missing in retrospective studies. The characterization and posterior detection of speckle noise in ultrasound (US) has been regarded as an important research topic in US imaging, for improving signal-to-noise ratio by removing speckle noise and for exploiting speckle correlation information. Most of the existing methods require either manual intervention, the need to know sensor parameters or are based on statistical models which often do not generalize well to B-scans of different imaging areas. The proposed method aims to overcome those limitations. The main novelty of this work is to show that speckle detection can be improved based on finding optimally discriminant low order speckle statistics. In addition, and in contrast with other approaches the presented method is fully automatic and can be efficiently implemented to B-scan images. The method detects speckle patches using an ellipsoid discriminant function which classifies patches based on features extracted from optimally discriminant low order moments of the uncompressed intensity B-scan information. In addition, if the uncompressed signal is not available, we propose and evaluate a method for the estimation of this factor. The computation of low order moments using an optimality criteria, the decompression factor estimation and other key aspects of the method are quantitatively evaluated using both simulated and real (phantom and in vivo) data. Speckle detection results are obtained using again phantom and in vivo studies which show the validity of our approach. In addition, speckle probability images (SPI) are presented which provide valuable information about the distribution of speckle and non-speckle areas in an image. The presented evaluation and results show the effectiveness of our approach. In particular, the need for using discriminant analysis to determine the optimal discriminant power of the statistical moments and that this optimal value strongly depends on the characteristics and imaged tissues in the B-scan data. 相似文献

The optical polarization of GaN/AlGaN wurtzite quantum wells in various orientations is studied using an arbitrarily-oriented [hkil] Hamiltonian potential matrix. The optical matrix elements in the wurtzite quantum wells are calculated using the k⋅p finite difference scheme. The results reveal the presence of giant in-plane optical anisotropy (polarized normal to [0001]) in the M-plane (i.e., the -oriented layer plane) GaN/Al0.2Ga0.8N quantum well, due to the positive crystal-field split energy effect (ΔCR>0). The present theoretical results are consistent with the photoluminescence measurements presented in the literature [B. Rau, et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 77 (2000) 3343]. 相似文献

Recent experimental investigations revealed that the biaxial stress in thin InGaN layers grown on thick GaN layer induces a large piezoelectric field along [0001] orientation that causes red-shift in optical transitions and reduction in oscillator strengths because of spatial separation of the electron and hole wave functions. In this Letter based on theoretical modeling we determined the well width z-dependent effect on red-shifted quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) in GaN/InxGa1 − xN (x=0.13) strained quantum well structures. Analyses are based on the solution of Schrödinger equation in a finite well including the internal piezoelectric electric field (F) due to the strained polarization as the perturbation potential. Our theoretical results show: (1) the red-shift in optical transition has a quadratic well-width form as it is for infinite wells (Davies, 1998) [1], (2) assuming the model based on a carrier effective mass dependence on the width of quantum wells, m∗(z), fits the experimental data (Takeuchi et al., 1997) [2] much more accurate compare to the model with constant effective mass, m∗. 相似文献

The paper focuses on the determination of statistical characteristics of photon distributions in a semi-infinite turbid medium, specifically the photon average trajectory and the root-mean-square deviation of photons from the average trajectory, with an approach based on the diffusion approximation to the radiative transfer equation. We show that the Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions used for this purpose give close results. We derive exact analytical expressions for the case of the Dirichlet boundary condition. To demonstrate the practical value of our results we consider approximate solution of the inverse problem of time-domain diffuse optical tomography with the flat layer transmission geometry. The problem is solved with the method of photon average trajectories which are constructed with analytical expressions derived for a semi-infinite medium. 相似文献

A theoretical model for interaction of a submerged moving body with the conjugate flow in a three-layer fluid is proposed to depict the internal flat solitary wave, which is observed in experiments conducted by the present authors. A set of coupled nonlinear algebraic equations is derived for the interracial displacements. The numerical results indicate that (a) the conjugate flow due to a two-dimensional body moving at the bottom possesses an apparent behaviour with two convex interfaces, (b) the solution satisfying the existence criterion is always unique near the relatively stable state of system. Theoretical analysis is qualitatively consistent with the experimental results obtained. 相似文献

SiC thin films were grown on Si (1 0 0) substrates by excimer laser ablation of a SiC target in vacuum. The effect of deposition temperature (up to 950 °C), post-deposition annealing and laser energy on the nanostructure, bonding and crystalline properties of the films was studied, in order to elucidate their transition from an amorphous to a crystalline phase. Infra-red spectroscopy shows that growth at temperatures greater than 600 °C produces layers with increasingly uniform environment of the Si-C bonds, while the appearance of large crystallites is detected, by X-ray diffraction, at 800 °C. Electron paramagnetic resonance confirms the presence of clustered paramagnetic centers within the sp2 carbon domains. Increasing deposition temperature leads to a decrease of the spin density and to a temperature-dependent component of the EPR linewidth induced by spin hopping. For films grown below 650 °C, post-deposition annealing at 1100 °C reduces the spin density as a result of a more uniform Si-C nanostructure, though large scale crystallization is not observed. For greater deposition temperatures, annealing leads to little changes in the bonding properties, but suppresses the temperature dependent component of the EPR linewidth. These findings are explained by a relaxation of the stress in the layers, through the annealing of the bond angle disorder that inhibits spin hopping processes. 相似文献

The rôle of interacting bound pairs in strongly coupled fermion systems is considered in connection with the transition to superfluidity. Model calculations are performed for finite-range separable interaction potentials. The results of a cluster-Hartree-Fock approximation are compared with recent approaches improving the Nozières and Schmitt-Rink theory. NiTi films deposited by pulsed laser ablation on Si/SiO2 are shown to exhibit structural and functional properties related to the shape-memory effect. Film characterization suggests
that relevant temperatures for the solid-to-solid transformation responsible for the shape memory are in substantial agreement
with those of the bulk target material, demonstrating a good congruency of the deposition process. Besides the technological
interest for this class of thin films, our findings point out the suitability of laser ablation for metal alloy deposition.
An investigation based on in situ ion-mass spectroscopy and covariance mapping analysis allows us to determine the main vapor-phase
processes leading to the formation of stoichiometric clusters expected to play a relevant role in assisting the growth of
NiTi thin films.
