A method that combines transmission of air-coupled ultrasound pulses through solid plates and amplitude and phase spectral analysis is presented. In particular, the method analyzes the first thickness resonance of the plates. The purpose is to determine, simultaneously, velocity and attenuation coefficient of the ultrasounds in the material and the thickness of the plate. This is especially useful when thickness can not be measured independently. The method is successfully applied to soft membranes, biological samples and FRP composites.  相似文献

Coupled vibration of arterial tubes is analyzed with the wave propagation approach and first-order shear deformation theory. Both the interior and exterior fluids are considered as compressible so that acoustic waves can be generated and propagated in the fluids. Results obtained using the theory have been evaluated against those available in the literature and the agreement has been found to be good. The theory can be used for future research on the vibration and acoustics of arterial walls. Vibration experiments were carried out on a silicone rubber tube in a water tank with a novel ultrasound stimulated optical vibrometry system. This system uses the radiation force of ultrasound to vibrate the tube at low frequency and records the resulting response by a laser vibrometer. Both the excitation and measurement are remote and noncontact. The silicone rubber tube was chosen because it has mechanical properties close to those of arteries. The fundamental frequency is well excited by the radiation force and measured with the laser. The measured fundamental frequency is in good agreement with the present theory.  相似文献

Predicting the influence of axial loads on the wave propagation in structures such as rails requires numerical analysis. Conventional three-dimensional finite element analysis has previously been applied to this problem. The process is tedious as it requires that a number of different length models be solved and that the user identify the computed modes of propagation. In this paper, the more specialised semi-analytical finite element method is extended to account for the effect of axial load. The semi-analytical finite element method includes the wave propagation as a complex exponential in the element formulation and therefore only a two-dimensional mesh of the cross-section of the waveguide is required. It was found that the stiffness matrix required to describe the effect of axial load is proportional to the mass matrix, which makes the extension to existing software trivial. The method was verified by application to an aluminium rod, where after phase and group velocities of propagating waves in a rail were computed to demonstrate the method.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental studies of the acoustic scattering by a finite linear grating of elastic cylindrical shells are performed. It is observed that a resonant interaction takes place at low frequency when the shells are very close to each other. This phenomenon can be clearly associated to the Scholte-Stoneley wave that propagates around a single shell. It is shown that each resonance of the Scholte-Stoneley wave is split up into N resonances when N shells compose the grating.  相似文献

The diagnosis of degenerative changes in human teeth is of general interest because early detections can avoid greater health problems and further weakening effects. Since the wear of teeth determines their stability and lifetime in relation to the physiological load, an ultrasonic survey of any dimensional changes of the enamel layer and especially of the dentin wall thickness may be very helpful. However, an ultrasonographic diagnosis requires first to determine the anisotropic human tooth properties at clinically relevant locations and to simulate wave propagation phenomena in inhomogeneous tooth models with proper dimensions. The first article of a series that provides modular data of mineralized tissues in human teeth at the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) deals with an ultrasonic method for measuring the asymmetry of dimensional characteristics of extracted human teeth and their ultrasonic path lengths (UPL). Heavily attenuating tooth halves were investigated with respect to the symmetry of normal and inclined oppositely directed radial ultrasonic paths. The measured UPLs ranged from 1.2 mm to 4.4 mm. The relative difference in inclined UPLs between the left and the right tooth halves reaches almost 30%. This reveals a large asymmetry. The mean difference of angles that represent fastest path lengths was 2.2+/-8.1 degrees, which indicates large asymmetry and anisotropy. Several aspects, which are required for a proper integration of asymmetric data into models designed for medical element engineering and simulation (MEES), are discussed.  相似文献

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) is capable of determining the bulk elastic properties of a solid from its characteristic vibration frequencies, given the dimensions, density and shape of the sample. The model used for extracting values of the elastic constants assumes perfect homogeneity, which can be approximated by average-isotropic polycrystals. This approximation is excellent in the small grain regime assumed for most averaging procedures, but for real samples with indeterminate grain size distributions, it is not clear where the approximation breaks down. RUS measurements were made on pure copper samples where the grain size distribution was changed by progressive heat treatments in order to find a quantitative limit for the loss of homogeneity. It is found that when a measure of the largest grains is 15% of the sample’s smallest dimension, the deviation in RUS fits indicates elastic inhomogeneity.  相似文献

A poroelastic plate that obeys the Biot theory is considered. Compact new forms of its reflection and transmission coefficients, similar to those of the resonance scattering theory for an elastic plate, are derived. A numerical comparison of the reflection coefficient modulus with the plate normal modes, at low frequency, shows that a study of the reflection or transmission coefficient does not provide the same kind of information on the poroelastic plate than an investigation of guided leaky waves propagation.  相似文献

The exact analytical solution for the scattering of a generalized (or “hollow”) acoustic Bessel beam in water by an elastic sphere centered on the beam is presented. The far-field acoustic scattering field is expressed as a partial wave series involving the scattering angle relative to the beam axis and the half-conical angle of the wave vector components of the generalized Bessel beam. The sphere is assumed to have isotropic elastic material properties so that the nth partial wave amplitude for plane wave scattering is proportional to a known partial-wave coefficient. The transverse acoustic scattering field is investigated versus the dimensionless parameter ka(k is the wave vector, a radius of the sphere) as well as the polar angle θ for a specific dimensionless frequency and half-cone angle β. For higher-order generalized beams, the acoustic scattering vanishes in the backward (θ = π) and forward (θ = 0) directions along the beam axis. Moreover it is possible to suppress the excitation of certain resonances of an elastic sphere by appropriate selection of the generalized Bessel beam parameters.  相似文献

Air-coupled ultrasound (ACU) provides a tool to evaluate wood samples of small or moderate thickness (<30 mm) thereby avoiding direct contact or liquid coupling. Results of through-transmission ACU measurements on wood veneer samples and related products are reported with respect to a wide variety of quality aspects. Fluctuations in the averaged received signal levels appear to be correlated to the presence of natural or machine-induced thickness and density variations, flaws and grain damage, errors produced by the manufacturing process, insufficient bonding on a substrate, etc. In addition it is seen that the variability of the signal levels enables to distinguish between quarter and crown areas.  相似文献

Acoustic radiation forces offer a means of manipulating particles within a fluid. Much interest in recent years has focussed on the use of radiation forces in microfluidic (or “lab on a chip”) devices. Such devices are well matched to the use of ultrasonic standing waves in which the resonant dimensions of the chamber are smaller than the ultrasonic wavelength in use. However, such devices have typically been limited to moving particles to one or two predetermined planes, whose positions are determined by acoustic pressure nodes/anti-nodes set up in the ultrasonic standing wave. In most cases devices have been designed to move particles to either the centre or (more recently) the side of a flow channel using ultrasonic frequencies that produce a half or quarter wavelength over the channel, respectively. It is demonstrated here that by rapidly switching back and forth between half and quarter wavelength frequencies - mode-switching - a new agglomeration position is established that permits beads to be brought to any arbitrary point between the half and quarter-wave nodes. This new agglomeration position is effectively a position of stable equilibrium. This has many potential applications, particularly in cell sorting and manipulation. It should also enable precise control of agglomeration position to be maintained regardless of manufacturing tolerances, temperature variations, fluid medium characteristics and particle concentration.  相似文献

Active acoustic structure (AAS) proposed in recent years has been viewed as an encouraging approach to actively control sound radiation from vibrating structures. Much work of AAS has been done on theoretical model, arrangement of the secondary panel and error sensing, and experimental investigation of AAS system, but physical mechanisms is little understanding. In this study, under minimization of the total sound power output, the physical mechanism of noise reduction is investigated by analyzing the sound power output change of primary and secondary structures and the distribution of sound intensity. The results show that there are two kinds of energetic behaviors, which includes the suppression of the sound power radiated by the primary panel and absorption of sound power by the primary and secondary panels.  相似文献

A general theoretical approach to the development of zero-thickness encapsulation models for contrast microbubbles is proposed. The approach describes a procedure that allows one to recast available rheological laws from the bulk form to a surface form which is used in a modified Rayleigh-Plesset equation governing the radial dynamics of a contrast microbubble. By the use of the proposed procedure, the testing of different rheological laws for encapsulation can be carried out. Challenges of existing shell models for lipid-encapsulated microbubbles, such as the dependence of shell parameters on the initial bubble radius and the “compression-only” behavior, are discussed. Analysis of the rheological behavior of lipid encapsulation is made by using experimental radius-time curves for lipid-coated microbubbles with radii in the range 1.2-2.5 μm. The curves were acquired for a research phospholipid-coated contrast agent insonified with a 20 cycle, 3.0 MHz, 100 kPa acoustic pulse. The fitting of the experimental data by a model which treats the shell as a viscoelastic solid gives the values of the shell surface viscosity increasing from 0.30 × 10−8 kg/s to 2.63 × 10−8 kg/s for the range of bubble radii, indicated above. The shell surface elastic modulus increases from 0.054 N/m to 0.37 N/m. It is proposed that this increase may be a result of the lipid coating possessing the properties of both a shear-thinning and a strain-softening material. We hypothesize that these complicated rheological properties do not allow the existing shell models to satisfactorily describe the dynamics of lipid encapsulation. In the existing shell models, the viscous and the elastic shell terms have the linear form which assumes that the viscous and the elastic stresses acting inside the lipid shell are proportional to the shell shear rate and the shell strain, respectively, with constant coefficients of proportionality. The analysis performed in the present paper suggests that a more general, nonlinear theory may be more appropriate. It is shown that the use of the nonlinear theory for shell viscosity allows one to model the “compression-only” behavior. As an example, the results of the simulation for a 2.03 μm radius bubble insonified with a 6 cycle, 1.8 MHz, 100 kPa acoustic pulse are given. These parameters correspond to the acoustic conditions under which the “compression-only” behavior was observed by de Jong et al. [Ultrasound Med. Biol. 33 (2007) 653-656]. It is also shown that the use of the Cross law for the modeling of the shear-thinning behavior of shell viscosity reduces the variance of experimentally estimated values of the shell viscosity and its dependence on the initial bubble radius.  相似文献

The paper presents a systematic study of acoustic and non-acoustic properties of consolidated porous samples of expanded clay granulates. The effect of the particle size on the acoustic performance of consolidated expanded clays is investigated experimentally and theoretically. This work involves a comparison of the measured and predicted values of the absorption coefficient and normalised acoustic surface impedance data. It is demonstrated that the values of tortuosity and standard deviation in the pore size distribution do not depend significantly on the size of the material aggregate. An empirical expression which links the flow resistivity of the consolidated granular mix has been derived from the measured data. These results pave the way for the development of a simple practical model which will be able to link the acoustic properties of a consolidated granular mix with the characteristic particle dimension and the porosity data. These materials are structurally robust and easy to integrate in buildings and highway structures to control the levels of environmental noise and improve the acoustic quality of spaces.  相似文献

A new empirical model has been developed by the authors to predict the flow resistivity, acoustic impedance and sound absorption coefficient of polyester fibre materials. The parameters of the model have been adjusted to best fit the values of airflow resistivity and sound absorption coefficient measured over a set of 38 samples. Calculated results are compared with normal incidence measurements carried out using two different techniques: the transfer-function method in an impedance tube (ISO 10534-2) and the free-field impulse response method (ISO 13472-1). Measurements performed on polyester fibre materials with different density and thickness values, and diameter ranging from 18 to 48 μm, are in good agreement with the predictions of the new model. It is concluded that the new model can predict the basic acoustic properties of common polyester fibre materials with any practical combination of thickness and density2.  相似文献

Photoacoustic soot sensor for in-situ black carbon monitoring   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The PhotoAcoustic Soot Sensor (PASS) for in situ black carbon mass monitoring is presented. The sensor combines a high-power laser diode ( = 802 nm;P = 450 mW) and a novel spectrophone setup to achieve a portable sensor system for black carbon measurements. The acoustic resonator with aQ-factor of 300 is operated in its 2nd azimuthal mode at 6670 Hz. To estimate the effects of the window position, laser beam collimation, and different loss mechanisms on spectrophone sensitivity a model treating these effects with respect to the signal strength of the azimuthal modes is described. It gives a cell constant of 5.8 V/(W m–1) in good agreement with 5.9 V/(W m–1) obtained from measurements with particulate carbon. Additionally, this model permits a method for an absolute calibration of the spectrophone. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio, the photoacoustic signal is estimated by a weighted least-squares fit to an averaged line profile of the excited normal mode instead of a direct measurement of peak height. Finally, the application of this data processing algorithm yields a detection limit of 1.5 × 10–6 m–1 or 0.5 g black carbon per m3  相似文献

The use of Biot theory for modelling ultrasonic wave propagation in porous media involves the definition of a "critical frequency" above which both fast and slow compressional waves will, in principle, propagate. Critical frequencies have been evaluated for healthy and osteoporotic cancellous bone filled with water or marrow, using data from the literature. The range of pore sizes in bone gives rise to a critical frequency band rather than a single critical frequency, the mean of which is lower for osteoporotic bone than normal bone. However, the critical frequency is a theoretical concept and previous researchers considered a more realistic "viscous frequency" above which both fast and slow waves may be experimentally observed. Viscous frequencies in bone are found to be several orders of magnitude greater than calculated critical frequencies. Whereas two waves may well be observed at all ultrasonic frequencies for water-filled cancellous bone at 20 degrees C, it is probable megahertz frequencies would be needed for observation of two waves in vivo.  相似文献

A new method based on generalized reflection and transmission (R/T) coefficients method is proposed to calculate the single seismic phase (SSP) of cylindrically multilayered media including liquid interlayer. The use of normalization factors and normalized Lamé coefficients makes the algorithm stable numerically. Using the modified R/T matrices, we derive the iterative expressions of generalized R/T matrices, and by using the iterative relation we determine the SSP of each interface and the full waveforms. To show the superiority of this new approach for investigating of reflection and transmission properties of cylindrically multilayered media, we simulate the full waveforms and SSPs of cased hole model with annulus I (casing-cement interface) channelling (or, cross-flow). The generalized reflection coefficient spectra and SSPs of interfaces obtained show the propagation mechanism of each component of full waveform clearly.  相似文献

Nonlinear elastic vibrations of cylindrical piezoelectric transducers are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A particular behaviour, that relates the space distribution of the fundamental mode vibration to those of the second and third harmonic components, is observed. A simplified physical interpretation of the phenomenon is given.  相似文献

Knowledge of resonant frequencies of contrast microbubbles is important for the optimization of ultrasound contrast imaging and therapeutic techniques. To date, however, there are estimates of resonance frequencies of contrast microbubbles only for the regime of linear oscillation. The present paper proposes an approach for evaluating resonance frequencies of contrast agent microbubbles in the regime of nonlinear oscillation. The approach is based on the calculation of the time-averaged oscillation power of the radial bubble oscillation. The proposed procedure was verified for free bubbles in the frequency range 1-4 MHz and then applied to lipid-shelled microbubbles insonified with a single 20-cycle acoustic pulse at two values of the acoustic pressure amplitude, 100 kPa and 200 kPa, and at four frequencies: 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 MHz. It is shown that, as the acoustic pressure amplitude is increased, the resonance frequency of a lipid-shelled microbubble tends to decrease in comparison with its linear resonance frequency. Analysis of existing shell models reveals that models that treat the lipid shell as a linear viscoelastic solid appear may be challenged to provide the observed tendency in the behavior of the resonance frequency at increasing acoustic pressure. The conclusion is drawn that the further development of shell models could be improved by the consideration of nonlinear rheological laws.  相似文献

At low-to-mid frequencies (1-15 kHz), sound penetrates better into lossy saturated sediments such as sandy seabeds than at the higher frequencies typical of many sonar systems. At the lower frequencies the signature of a man-made object, such as an oil can or a mine, is characterized by relatively strong elastic components that may help in detecting the object when partially or totally buried in high-density-clutter areas. Using simulations, we studied the low frequency elastic response of representative elastic objects such as spherical and cylindrical shells. This was done by selecting the strongest elastic waves supported and predicting how their characteristics (i.e., dispersion and attenuation) change as the bottom type or the object’s burial depth varies. Based on this study, experimental results of physics-based detection of man-made buried objects are shown. At-sea data were selected from the measurements conducted during the GOATS’98 trial in a cluttered, sandy seabed area in coastal waters.  相似文献
