Metal–organic coordination materials are of widespread interest because of the coupled benefits of inorganic and organic building blocks. These materials can be assembled into hollow capsules with a range of properties, which include selective permeability, enhanced mechanical/thermal stability, and stimuli‐responsiveness. Previous studies have primarily focused on the assembly aspects of metal‐coordination capsules; however, the engineering of metal‐specific functionality for capsule design has not been explored. A library of functional metal–phenolic network (MPN) capsules prepared from a phenolic ligand (tannic acid) and a range of metals is reported. The properties of the MPN capsules are determined by the coordinated metals, allowing for control over film thickness, disassembly characteristics, and fluorescence behavior. Furthermore, the functional properties of the MPN capsules were tailored for drug delivery, positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and catalysis. The ability to incorporate multiple metals into MPN capsules demonstrates that a diverse range of functional materials can be generated.  相似文献

Miniaturization of metal–biomolecule frameworks (MBioFs) to the nanometer scale represents a novel strategy for fabricating materials with tunable physical and chemical properties. Herein, we demonstrate a simple, low‐cost, and completely organic solvent‐free strategy for constructing a dl ‐glutamic acid–copper ion‐based three‐dimensional nanofibrous network structure. The building blocks used are available in large quantities and do not require any laborious synthesis or modification. Importantly, we demonstrate with an intriguing example, that the self‐assembly ability of supramolecular nanofibers could be finely tuned with the ligands’ chirality. This offers opportunities for obtaining one‐dimensional hierarchical nanostructures and expands the investigation scope of stereoselective self‐assembly. Furthermore, the material displays good ability in removing anionic dyes from water and inhibits the growth of both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, possibly through the contact‐killing mechanism; this indicates potential applications in environmental issues and antimicrobial nanotherapeutics.  相似文献

The development and utilization of biomass resources could contribute to new materials for long‐term sustainable energy storage and environmental applications, reduce environmental impacts, and meet the urgent need for green and sustainable development strategies. Herein, a bimetallic metal–phenolic network (MPN) was applied to incorporate different metallic element species into cattle skin and fabricate collagen‐fiber‐derived complex oxide nanofibers using natural polyphenols (Myrica tannins). Direct thermal transition of these biomass–MPN composites generates hierarchically porous nanofibers possessing micro‐ and mesoporous architectures along with a well‐preserved macroscopic structure. The pore system and complex oxide composition provide excellent photocatalytic performance. This low‐cost, simple, and readily scalable MPN‐based approach provides a straightforward route to synthesize nanostructured materials directly from biomass, which could play important roles in a wide range of potential applications.  相似文献

Determination of molecular structural parameters of hydrophobic cholesterol–naphthalimide conjugates for water binding capabilities as well as their moisture‐sensitive supramolecular self‐assembly were revealed. Water binding was a key factor in leading trace water‐induced crystallization against gelation in apolar solvent. Ordered water molecules entrapped in self‐assembly arrays revealed by crystal structures behave as hydrogen‐bonding linkers to facilitate three‐dimensional growth into crystals rather than one‐dimensional gel nanofibers. Water binding was also reflected on the supramolecular chirality inversion of vesicle self‐assembly in aqueous media via heating‐induced dehydration. Structural parameters that favor water binding were evaluated in detail, which could help rationally design organic building units for advancing soft materials, crystal engineering, and chiral recognition.  相似文献

Cocrystals of 4‐styrylpyridine and 1,2,4,5‐tetracyanobenzene were successfully prepared by supramolecular self‐assembly. Donor–acceptor interactions between the molecular components are the main driving force for self‐assembly and contribute to intermolecular charge transfer. The cocrystals possess two‐photon absorption properties that are not observed in the individual components; suggesting that two‐photon absorption originates from intermolecular charge‐transfer interactions in the donor–acceptor system. The origin of two‐photon absorption in multichromophore systems remains under‐researched; thus, the system offers a rare demonstration of two‐photon absorption by cocrystallization. Cocrystal engineering may facilitate further design and development of novel materials for nonlinear optical and optoelectronic applications.  相似文献

Liquid‐assisted grinding (LAG) was used to combine three levels of molecular self‐assembly into a one‐pot mechanochemical approach for the construction of metal–organic materials. The approach was applied for the construction of three adducts of cobalt(II) dibenzoylmethanate with isonicotinamide, nicotinamide and imidazole, to screen for their inclusion compounds. The one‐pot process consists of: i) The coordination‐driven binding of addends to the equatorially‐protected metal ion, resulting in “wheel‐and‐axle”‐shaped complexes; ii) self‐assembly of resulting complexes by way of hydrogen‐bonded synthons to form metal–organic inclusion hosts; iii) in situ inclusion of the grinding liquid in the resulting host. This approach provided quantitatively and within 20 min the known inclusion compounds of the bis(isonicotinamide) adduct in a single synthetic step. Changing the liquid phase in LAG was used to explore the inclusion behaviour of new wheel‐and‐axle adducts with nicotinamide and imidazole, revealing several inclusion compounds, as well as two polymorphs, of the bis(nicotinamide) host. Preliminary results suggest that one‐pot LAG is superior to solution synthesis in screening for metal–organic inclusion compounds. The difference between the methods is rationalised in terms of reactant solubility and solvent competition. In contrast to the nicotinamide adduct, the bis(imidazole) adduct did not form inclusion compounds. The difference in the inclusion properties of the two adducts is rationalised by structural information gathered by single crystal and powder X‐ray diffraction.  相似文献

Gelation mechanism is of utmost importance to the rational design of supramolecular hydrogelators. Although both kinetic and thermodynamic controlled self‐assembly processes have been widely studied in hydrogels, the formation relationship between crystalline and amorphous gel networks still remains ambiguous. Herein, a gelation transformation from a kinetic to a thermodynamic process was achieved by balancing the rigidity and flexibility of the inorganic–organic co‐assemblies. By using polyoxometalates and zwitterionic amphiphiles, the transition morphologies between crystalline and amorphous hydrogel networks were evidenced for the first time, as ordered wormlike micelles. Given the versatile applications of hydrogels in biological systems and materials science, these findings may highlight the potential of inorganic–organic binary supramolecular hydrogelators and fill in the blank between kinetic and thermodynamic controlled gelation processes.  相似文献

Mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs) have been demonstrated great potential in various applications. Up to now, the direct synthesis of MMOs is still limited to the solvent induced inorganic‐organic self‐assembly process. Here, we develop a facile, general, and high throughput solvent‐free self‐assembly strategy to synthesize a series of MMOs including single‐component MMOs and multi‐component MMOs (e.g., doped MMOs, composite MMOs, and polymetallic oxide) with high crystallinity and remarkable porous properties by grinding and heating raw materials. Compared with the traditional solution self‐assembly process, the avoidance of solvents in this method not only greatly increases the yield of target products and synthesis efficiency, but also reduces the environmental pollution and the consumption of cost and energy. We believe the presented approach will pave a new avenue for scalable production of advanced mesoporous materials for various applications.  相似文献

Luminescent metal nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as a new class of functional materials that have rich physicochemical properties and wide potential applications. In recent years, it has been found that some metal NCs undergo aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) and an interesting fluorescence‐to‐phosphorescence (F‐P) switching in solutions. However, insights of both the AIE and the F‐P switching remain largely unknown. Now, gelation of water soluble, atomically precise Ag9 NCs is achieved by the addition of antisolvent. Self‐assembly of Ag9 NCs into entangled fibers was confirmed, during which AIE was observed together with an F‐P switching occurring within a narrow time scale. Structural evaluation indicates the fibers are highly ordered. The self‐assembly of Ag9 NCs and their photoluminescent property are thermally reversible, making the metal–organic gels good candidates for luminescent ratiometric thermometers.  相似文献

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are molecular metal‐oxide anions applied in energy conversion and storage, manipulation of biomolecules, catalysis, as well as materials design and assembly. Although often overlooked, the interplay of intrinsically anionic POMs with organic and inorganic cations is crucial to control POM self‐assembly, stabilization, solubility, and function. Beyond simple alkali metals and ammonium, chemically diverse cations including dendrimers, polyvalent metals, metal complexes, amphiphiles, and alkaloids allow tailoring properties for known applications, and those yet to be discovered. This review provides an overview of fundamental POM–cation interactions in solution, the resulting solid‐state compounds, and behavior and properties that emerge from these POM–cation interactions. We will explore how application‐inspired research has exploited cation‐controlled design to discover new POM materials, which in turn has led to the quest for fundamental understanding of POM–cation interactions.  相似文献

We present a two‐step template‐free approach toward monolithic materials with controlled trimodal porous structures with macro‐, meso‐, and micropores. Our method relies on two ordering processes in discrete length scales: 1) Spontaneous formation of macroporous structures in monolithic materials by the sol–gel process through the short‐range ordered self‐assembly of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and 2) reorganization of the framework structures in a mediator solution. The Zr‐terephthalate‐based MOF (UiO‐66‐NH2) was adopted as a proof of concept. The self‐assembly‐induced phase separation process offered interconnected macropores with diameters ranging from 0.9 to 1.8 μm. The subsequent reorganization process converted the microporous structure from low crystalline framework to crystalline UiO‐66. The resultant mesopore size within the skeletons was controlled in the range from 9 to 21 nm. This approach provides a novel way of designing spaces from nano‐ to micrometer scale in network‐forming materials.  相似文献

Understanding the crystallization of organic molecules is a long‐standing challenge. Herein, a mechanistic study on the self‐assembly of crystalline arrays in aqueous solution is presented. The crystalline arrays are assembled from perylene diimide (PDI) amphiphiles bearing a chiral N‐acetyltyrosine side group connected to the PDI aromatic core. A kinetic study of the crystallization process was performed using circular dichroism spectroscopy combined with time‐resolved cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo‐TEM) imaging of key points along the reaction coordinate, and molecular dynamics simulation of the initial stages of the assembly. The study reveals a complex self‐assembly process starting from the formation of amorphous aggregates that are transformed into crystalline material through a nucleation–growth process. Activation parameters indicate the key role of desolvation along the assembly pathway. The insights from the kinetic study correlate well with the structural data from cryo‐TEM imaging. Overall, the study reveals four stages of crystalline self‐assembly: 1) collapse into amorphous aggregates; 2) nucleation as partial ordering; 3) crystal growth; and 4) fusion of smaller crystalline aggregates into large crystals. These studies indicate that the assembly process proceeds according to a two‐step crystallization model, whereby initially formed amorphous material is reorganized into an ordered system. This process follows Ostwald’s rule of stages, evolving through a series of intermediate phases prior to forming the final structure, thus providing an insight into the crystalline self‐assembly process in aqueous medium.  相似文献

Developing simple and general approaches for the synthesis of nanometer‐sized DNA materials with specific morphologies and functionalities is important for various applications. Herein, a novel approach for the synthesis of a new set of DNA‐based nanoarchitectures through coordination‐driven self‐assembly of FeII ions and DNA molecules is reported. By fine‐tuning the assembly, Fe–DNA nanospheres of precise sizes and controlled compositions can be produced. The hybrid nanoparticles can be tailored for delivery of functional DNA to cells in vitro and in vivo with enhanced biological function. This highlights the potential of metal ion coordination as a tool for directing the assembly of DNA architectures, which conceptualizes a new pathway to expand the repertoire of DNA‐based nanomaterials. This methodology will advance both the fields of DNA nanobiotechnology and metal–ligand coordination chemistry.  相似文献

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is attractive in understanding the excited‐state chirality and developing advanced materials. Herein, we propose a chiral reticular self‐assembly strategy to unite achiral AIEgens, chirality donors, and metal ions to fabricate optically pure AIEgen metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as efficient CPL materials. We have found that CPL activity of the single‐crystal AIEgen MOF was generated by the framework‐enabled strong emission from AIEgens and through‐space chirality transfer from chirality donors to achiral AIEgens via metal‐ion bridges. For the first time, a dual mechano‐switched blue and red‐shifted CPL activity was achieved via ultrasonication and grinding, which enabled the rotation or stacking change of AIEgen rotors with the intact homochiral framework. This work provided not only an insightful view of the aggregation induced emission (AIE) mechanism, but also an efficient and versatile strategy for the preparation of stimuli‐responsive CPL materials.  相似文献

The study of the organization of small π‐conjugated molecules is imperative to understanding and controlling its properties for various applications. Coronene bisimides (CBIs) are potential candidates for novel liquid‐crystalline materials and active n‐type semiconductor molecules in organic electronics. To understand the self‐assembly of this seldom‐studied chromophore, we have designed two derivatives of CBIs bearing chiral and achiral 3,4,5‐trialkoxyphenyl groups at the imide position, named as CBI‐GCH and CBI‐GACH , respectively. CBI‐GCH self‐assembles mainly through π‐stacking and van der Waals interactions in nonpolar methylcyclohexane to result in long 1D fibrillar stacks. The mechanism of supramolecular polymerization was probed by using chiroptical studies, which showed an isodesmic pathway for CBI‐GCH . The thermodynamic parameters that govern the self‐assembly are detailed. CBI‐GACH also shows similar self‐assembly behavior as its chiral counterpart. X‐ray diffraction studies of both molecules reveals a 2D hexagonal columnar arrangement. The coassembly of CBI‐GCH and CBI‐GACH shows chiral amplification (sergeant and soldiers experiment) with saturation at 30–50 % of the chiral derivative, which was further used to study the dynamics of the assembly. Thus, this study presents a rare report of chiral amplification in an isodesmic system.  相似文献

We highlight the structural diversity of strategically designed two short peptide amphiphiles (sPAs) and describe their structure–function relationship studies. The shuffling of two key amino acids, that is, tyrosine and phenylalanine, in a designed sPA lead to a pair of constitutional isomers. Such small and strategic alteration can bring a substantial change in the self‐assembling pattern. Inspired from the naturally occurring metallopeptides, bioactive transition‐metal ions were used for constructing the unusual nanostructures. Use of appropriate metal ions created bigger differences between the properties of these isomers and hence the self‐assembly. Coordination of appropriate transition metal ions modifies the internal nanoscale structures of sPA, thus leading to the formation of vertically stacked terraced layers with decreasing size, which possess a high degree of dimensional regularity. We propose that such metal‐induced terraced nanodome‐like hierarchical self‐assembly may have relevance for specific biotechnology applications.  相似文献

Despite considerable achievements over the last two decades, nonporous organic–inorganic hybrid materials are mostly amorphous, especially in the absence of solvothermal processes. The organosilane self‐assembly approach is one of the few opportunities for creating a regular assembly of organic and inorganic moieties. Additionally, well‐established organosilicon chemistry enables the introduction of numerous organic functionalities. The synthesis of periodically ordered hybrids relies on mono‐, bis‐, or multisilylated organosilane building blocks self‐assembling into hybrid mesostructures or superstructures, subsequently cross‐linked by siloxane Si‐O‐Si condensation. The general synthesis procedure is template‐free and one‐step. However, three concurrent processes underlie the generation of self‐organized hybrid networks: thermodynamics of amphiphilic aggregation, dynamic self‐assembly, and kinetically controlled sol–gel chemistry. Hence, the set of experimental conditions and the precursor structure are of paramount importance in achieving long‐range order. Since the first developments in the mid‐1990s, the subject has seen considerable progress leading to many innovative advanced nanomaterials providing promising applications in membranes, pollutant remediation, catalysis, conductive coatings, and optoelectronics. This work reviews, comprehensively, the primary evolution of this expanding field of research.  相似文献

A formaldehyde‐assisted metal–ligand crosslinking strategy is used for the synthesis of metal–phenolic coordination spheres based on sol–gel chemistry. A range of mono‐metal (Co, Fe, Al, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ce), bi‐metal (Fe‐Co, Co‐Zn) and multi‐metal (Fe‐Co‐Ni‐Cu‐Zn) species can be incorporated into the frameworks of the colloidal spheres. The formation of coordination spheres involves the pre‐crosslinking of plant polyphenol (such as tannic acid) by formaldehyde in alkaline ethanol/water solvents, followed by the aggregation assembly of polyphenol oligomers via metal–ligand crosslinking. The coordination spheres can be used as sensors for the analysis of nucleic acid variants with single‐nucleotide discrimination, and a versatile precursor for electrode materials with high electrocatalytic performance.  相似文献

Materials displaying room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have been attracting wide attention in recent years due to their distinctive characteristics including long emissive lifetime and large Stokes shift, and their various applications. Most synthesized RTP materials are metal complexes that display enhanced intersystem crossing and crystallization is a common way to restrict nonradiative transition. Amorphous metal‐free RTP materials, which do not rely on expensive and toxic metals and can be prepared in a straightforward fashion, have become an important branch of the field. This Minireview summarizes recent progress in amorphous RTP materials according to the approaches used to immobilize phosphors: host–guest interactions, molecule doping, copolymers, and small‐molecule self‐assembly. Some existing challenges and insightful perspectives are given at the end of the Minireview, which should benefit the future design and development of amorphous metal‐free RTP materials.  相似文献

Directing self‐assembly processes out‐of‐equilibrium to yield kinetically trapped materials with well‐defined dimensions remains a considerable challenge. Kinetically controlled assembly of self‐synthesizing peptide‐functionalized macrocycles through a nucleation–growth mechanism is reported. Spontaneous fiber formation in this system is effectively shut down as most of the material is diverted into metastable non‐assembling trimeric and tetrameric macrocycles. However, upon adding seeds to this mixture, well‐defined fibers with controllable lengths and narrow polydispersities are obtained. This seeded growth strategy also allows access to supramolecular triblock copolymers. The resulting noncovalent assemblies can be further stabilized through covalent capture. Taken together, these results show that self‐synthesizing materials, through their interplay between dynamic covalent bonds and noncovalent interactions, are uniquely suited for out‐of‐equilibrium self‐assembly.  相似文献
