It is well known that gas‐phase experiments and computational methods point to the dominance of dispersion forces in the molecular association of hydrocarbons. Estimates or even quantification of these weak forces are complicated due to solvent effects in solution. The dissection of interaction energies and quantification of dispersion interactions is particularly challenging for polar systems such as ionic liquids (ILs) which are characterized by a subtle balance between Coulomb interactions, hydrogen bonding, and dispersion forces. Here, we have used vaporization enthalpies, far‐infrared spectroscopy, and dispersion‐corrected calculations to dissect the interaction energies between cations and anions in aprotic (AILs), and protic (PILs) ionic liquids. It was found that the higher total interaction energy in PILs results from the strong and directional hydrogen bonds between cation and anion, whereas the larger vaporization enthalpies of AILs clearly arise from increasing dispersion forces between ion pairs.  相似文献

The properties of ionic liquids are determined by the energy‐balance between Coulomb‐interaction, hydrogen‐bonding, and dispersion forces. Out of a set of protic ionic liquids (PILs), including trialkylammonium cations and methylsulfonate and triflate anions we could detect the transfer from hydrogen‐bonding to dispersion‐dominated interaction between cation and anion in the PIL [(C6H13)3NH][CF3SO3]. The characteristic vibrational features for both ion‐pair species can be detected and assigned in the far‐infrared spectra. Our approach gives direct access to the relative strength of hydrogen‐bonding and dispersion forces in a Coulomb‐dominated system. Dispersion‐corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations support the experimental findings. The dispersion forces could be quantified to contribute about 2.3 kJ mol?1 per additional methylene group in the alkyl chains of the ammonium cation.  相似文献

We present deuteron quadrupole coupling constants (DQCC) for hydroxyl‐functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) in the crystalline or glassy states characterizing two types of hydrogen bonding: The regular Coulomb‐enhanced hydrogen bonds between cation and anion (c–a), and the unusual hydrogen bonds between cation and cation (c–c), which are present despite repulsive Coulomb forces. We measure these sensitive probes of hydrogen bonding by means of solid‐state NMR spectroscopy. The DQCCs of (c–a) ion pairs and (c–c) H‐bonds are compared to those of salt bridges in supramolecular complexes and those present in molecular liquids. At low temperatures, the (c–c) species successfully compete with the (c–a) ion pairs and dominate the cluster populations. Equilibrium constants obtained from molecular‐dynamics (MD) simulations show van't Hoff behavior with small transition enthalpies between the differently H‐bonded species. We show that cationic‐cluster formation prevents these ILs from crystallizing. With cooling, the (c–c) hydrogen bonds persist, resulting in supercooling and glass formation.  相似文献

Ionic liquids (ILs), vary strongly in their interaction with CO2. We suggest simple theoretical approach to predict the CO2 absorption behavior of ILs. Strong interaction of the CO2 with the IL anions corresponds to chemical absorption whereas weak interaction indicates physical absorption. A predictive estimate with a clear distinction between physical and chemical absorption can be simply obtained according to geometries optimized in the presence of a solvation model instead of optimizing it only in gas phase as has been done to date. The resulting Gibbs free energies compare very well with experimental values and the energies were correlated with experimental capacities. Promising anions, for ionic liquids with reversible CO2 absorption properties can be defined by a reaction Gibbs free energy of absorption in the range of ?30 to 16 kJ mol?1.  相似文献

Potential applications of ionic liquids depend on the properties of this class of liquid material. To a large extent the structure and properties of these Coulomb systems are determined by the intermolecular interactions among anions and cations. In particular the subtle balance between Coulomb forces, hydrogen bonds and dispersion forces is of great importance for the understanding of ionic liquids. The purpose of the present paper is to answer three questions: Do hydrogen bonds exist in these Coulomb fluids? To what extent do hydrogen bonds contribute to the overall interaction between anions and cations? And finally, are hydrogen bonds important for the physical properties of ionic liquids? All these questions are addressed by using a suitable combination of experimental and theoretical methods including newly synthesized imidazolium-based ionic liquids, far infrared spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, DFT calculations, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry and quartz-crystal-microbalance measurements. The key statement is that although ionic liquids consist solely of anions and cations and Coulomb forces are the dominating interaction, local and directional interaction such as hydrogen bonding has significant influence on the structure and properties of ionic liquids. This is demonstrated for the case of melting points, viscosities and enthalpies of vaporization. As a consequence, a variety of important properties can be tuned towards a larger working temperature range, finally expanding the range of potential applications.  相似文献

We focus on a series of protic ionic liquids (PILs) with imidazolium and alkylimidazolium (1R3HIm, R=methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl) cations. Using the literature data and our experimental results on the thermal and transport properties, we analyze the effects of the anion nature and the alkyl radical length in the cation structure on the above properties. DFT calculations in gas and solvent phase provide further microscopic insights into the structure and cation-anion binding in these PILs. We show that the higher thermodynamic stability of an ion pair raises the PIL decomposition temperature. The melting points of the salts with the same cation decrease as the hydrocarbon radical in the cation becomes longer, which correlates with the weaker ion-ion interaction inthe ion pairs. A comparative analysis of the protic ILs and corresponding ILs (1R3MeIm) with the same radical (R) in the cation structure and the same anion has been performed. The lower melting points of the ILs with 1R3MeIm cations are assumed to result from the weakening of both the ion-ion interaction and the hydrogen bond.  相似文献

The vaporization kinetics of two acetamide pesticides, namely alachlor and metolachlor, was studied by thermogravimetric analysis under nonisothermal conditions (using heating rates between 1.0 and 10 K min?1). A model‐free isoconversional method of kinetic analysis was proposed, and activation energy dependences on the extent of conversion α for nonisothermal experiments were given. An increase in activation energy is shown for alachlor from 50 to 60 kJ mol?1, while E values do not significantly vary in the range α > 0.1: 63 kJ mol?1 for metolachlor while 60 kJ mol?1 for alachlor. At the end of vaporization (0.9 < α < 1.0), the activation energies are in close agreement with the enthalpies of vaporization calculated from DSC measurements. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Modeling of the temperature‐dependent liquid entropy of ionic liquids (ILs) with great accuracy using COSMO‐RS is demonstrated. The minimum structures of eight IL ion pairs are investigated and the entropy, calculated from ion pairs, is found to differ on average only 2 % from the available experimental values (119 data points). For calculations with single ions, the average error amounts to 2.6 % and stronger‐coordinating ions tend to give higher deviations. Additionally, the first parameterization of the standard liquid entropy for ILs is presented in the context of traditional volume‐based thermodynamics (Sl0=1.585 kJ mol?1 K?1 nm?3?rm3+14.09 J mol?1 K?1), which sheds light on the statistical treatment of ionic interactions. The findings provide the first direct access to accurate predictions of liquid entropies of ILs, which are tedious and time‐consuming to measure.  相似文献

Adsorption of molecular hydrogen on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), sulfur-intercalated SWCNT (S-SWCNT), and boron-doped SWCNT (BSWCNT), have been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT). Two methods KMLYP and local density approximation (LDA) were used to calculate the binding energies. The most stable configuration of H2 on the surface of pristine SWCNT was found to be on the top of a hexagonal at a distance of 3.54 Å in good agreement with the value of 3.44 Å reported by Han and Lee (Carbon, 2004, 42, 2169). KMLYP binding energies for the most stable configurations in cases of pristine SWCNT, S-SWCNT, and BSWCNT were found to be ?2.2 kJ mol?1, ?3.5 kJ mol?1, and ?3.5 kJ mol?1, respectively, while LDA binding energies were found to be ?8.8 kJ mol?1, ?9.7 kJ mol?1, and ?4.1 kJ mol?1, respectively. Increasing the polarizability of hydrogen molecule due to the presence of sulfur in sulfur intercalated SWCNT caused changes in the character of its bonding to sulfur atom and affected the binding energy. In H2-BSWCNT system, stronger charge transfer caused stronger interaction between H2 and BSWCNT to result a higher binding energy relative to the binding energy for H2-SWCNT.  相似文献

The individual hydrogen bonding energies in N-methylacetamide chains were evaluated at the MP2/6-31+G** level including BSSE correction and at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2pd) level including BSSE and van der Waals correction. The calculation results indicate that compared with MP2 results, B3LYP calculations without van der Waals correction underestimate the individual hydrogen bonding energies about 5.4 kJ mol?1 for both the terminal and central hydrogen bonds, whereas B3LYP calculations with van der Waals correction produce almost the same individual hydrogen bonding energies as MP2 does for those terminal hydrogen bonds, but still underestimate the individual hydrogen bonding energies about 2.5 kJ mol?1 for the hydrogen bonds near the center. Our calculation results show that the individual hydrogen bonding energy becomes more negative (more attractive) as the chain becomes longer and that the hydrogen bonds close to the interior of the chain are stronger than those near the ends. The weakest individual hydrogen bonding energy is about ?29.0 kJ mol?1 found in the dimer, whereas with the growth of the N-methylacetamide chain the individual hydrogen bonding energy was estimated to be as large as ?62.5 kJ mol?1 found in the N-methylacetamide decamer, showing that there is a significant hydrogen bond cooperative effect in N-methylacetamide chains. The natural bond orbital analysis indicates that a stronger hydrogen bond corresponds to a larger positive charge for the H atom and a larger negative charge for the O atom in the N-H?O=C bond, corresponds to a stronger second-order stabilization energy between the oxygen lone pair and the N-H antibonding orbital, and corresponds to more charge transfer between the hydrogen bonded donor and acceptor molecules.  相似文献

A first-generation fluctuating charge (FQ) force field to be ultimately applied for protein simulations is presented. The electrostatic model parameters, the atomic hardnesses, and electronegativities, are parameterized by fitting to DFT-based charge responses of small molecules perturbed by a dipolar probe mimicking a water dipole. The nonbonded parameters for atoms based on the CHARMM atom-typing scheme are determined via simultaneously optimizing vacuum water-solute geometries and energies (for a set of small organic molecules) and condensed phase properties (densities and vaporization enthalpies) for pure bulk liquids. Vacuum solute-water geometries, specifically hydrogen bond distances, are fit to 0.19 A r.m.s. error, while dimerization energies are fit to 0.98 kcal/mol r.m.s. error. Properties of the liquids studied include bulk liquid structure and polarization. The FQ model does indeed show a condensed phase effect in the shifting of molecular dipole moments to higher values relative to the gas phase. The FQ liquids also appear to be more strongly associated, in the case of hydrogen bonding liquids, due to the enhanced dipolar interactions as evidenced by shifts toward lower energies in pair energy distributions. We present results from a short simulation of NMA in bulk TIP4P-FQ water as a step towards simulating solvated peptide/protein systems. As expected, there is a nontrivial dipole moment enhancement of the NMA (although the quantitative accuracy is difficult to assess). Furthermore, the distribution of dipole moments of water molecules in the vicinity of the solutes is shifted towards larger values by 0.1-0.2 Debye in keeping with previously reported work.  相似文献

Cation‐radicals and dications corresponding to hydrogen atom adducts to N‐terminus‐protonated Nα‐glycylphenylalanine amide (Gly‐Phe‐NH2) are studied by combined density functional theory and Møller‐Plesset perturbational computations (B3‐MP2) as models for electron‐capture dissociation of peptide bonds and elimination of side‐chain groups in gas‐phase peptide ions. Several structures are identified as local energy minima including isomeric aminoketyl cation‐radicals, and hydrogen‐bonded ion‐radicals, and ylid‐cation‐radical complexes. The hydrogen‐bonded complexes are substantially more stable than the classical aminoketyl structures. Dissociations of the peptide N? Cα bonds in aminoketyl cation‐radicals are 18–47 kJ mol?1 exothermic and require low activation energies to produce ion‐radical complexes as stable intermediates. Loss of the side‐chain benzyl group is calculated to be 44 kJ mol?1 endothermic and requires 68 kJ mol?1 activation energy. Rice‐Ramsperger‐Kassel‐Marcus (RRKM) and transition‐state theory (TST) calculations of unimolecular rate constants predict fast preferential N? Cα bond cleavage resulting in isomerization to ion‐molecule complexes, while dissociation of the Cα? CH2C6H5 bond is much slower. Because of the very low activation energies, the peptide bond dissociations are predicted to be fast in peptide cation‐radicals that have thermal (298 K) energies and thus behave ergodically. Computer simulation of interaction of the structural fragments of triterpenoid saponins with the anion exchanger AV-17-2P was carried out using the Gaussian 03 software. The results showed that a decrease in the energy of the system that includes the sum of the energies of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding at the absorption by the anion exchanger of the polar part of the saponin molecule equals 18.9 kJ mol?1 and at the absorption of oleanolic acid, 31.9 kJ mol?1, that is, the sorption capacity of the aglycone was higher than that of glucuronic acid.  相似文献

Insight into the key factors driving the competition of halogen and hydrogen bonds is obtained by studying the affinity of the Lewis bases trimethylamine (TMA), dimethyl ether (DME), and methyl fluoride (MF) towards difluoroiodomethane (CHF2I). Analysis of the infrared and Raman spectra of solutions in liquid krypton containing mixtures of TMA and CHF2I and of DME and CHF2I reveals that for these Lewis bases hydrogen and halogen‐bonded complexes appear simultaneously. In contrast, only a hydrogen‐bonded complex is formed for the mixtures of CHF2I and MF. The complexation enthalpies for the C?H ??? Y hydrogen‐bonded complexes with TMA, DME, and MF are determined to be ?14.7(2), ?10.5(5) and ?5.1(6) kJ mol?1, respectively. The values for the C?I ??? Y halogen‐bonded isomers are ?19.0(3) kJ mol?1 for TMA and ?9.9(8) kJ mol?1 for DME. Generalization of the observed trends suggests that, at least for the bases studied here, softer Lewis bases such as TMA favor halogen bonding, whereas harder bases such as MF show a substantial preference for hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

The structure of the peroxyacetic acid (PAA) molecule and its conformational mobility under rotation about the peroxide bond was studied by ab initio and density functional methods. The free rotation is hindered by the trans-barrier of height 22.3 kJ mol–1. The equilibrium molecular structure of AcOOH (C s symmetry) is a result of intramolecular hydrogen bond. The high energy of hydrogen bonding (46 kJ mol–1 according to natural bonding orbital analysis) hampers formation of intermolecular associates of AcOOH in the gas and liquid phases. The standard enthalpies of formation for AcOOH (–353.2 kJ mol–1) and products of radical decomposition of the peroxide — AcO· (–190.2 kJ mol–1) and AcOO· (–153.4 kJ mol–1) — were determined by the G2 and G2(MP2) composite methods. The O—H and O—O bonds in the PAA molecule (bond energies are 417.8 and 202.3 kJ mol–1, respectively) are much stronger than in alkyl hydroperoxide molecules. This provides an explanation for substantial contribution of non-radical channels of the decomposition of peroxyacetic acid. The electron density distribution and gas-phase acidity of PAA were determined. The transition states of the ethylene and cyclohexene epoxidation reactions were located (E a = 71.7 and 50.9 kJ mol–1 respectively).  相似文献

Classical atomistic simulations are used to compute the enthalpy of vaporization of a series of ionic liquids composed of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations paired with the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion. The calculations show that the enthalpy of vaporization is lowest for neutral ion pairs. The enthalpy of vaporization increases by about 40 kJ/mol with the addition of each ion pair to the vaporizing cluster. Non-neutral clusters have much higher vaporization enthalpies than their neutral counterparts and thus are not expected to make up a significant fraction of volatile species. The enthalpy of vaporization increases slightly as the cation alkyl chain length increases and as temperature decreases. The calculated vaporization enthalpies are consistent with two sets of recent experimental measurements as well as with previous atomistic simulations.  相似文献

A study of the strong N?X????O?N+ (X=I, Br) halogen bonding interactions reports 2×27 donor×acceptor complexes of N‐halosaccharins and pyridine N‐oxides (PyNO). DFT calculations were used to investigate the X???O halogen bond (XB) interaction energies in 54 complexes. A simplified computationally fast electrostatic model was developed for predicting the X???O XBs. The XB interaction energies vary from ?47.5 to ?120.3 kJ mol?1; the strongest N?I????O?N+ XBs approaching those of 3‐center‐4‐electron [N?I?N]+ halogen‐bonded systems (ca. 160 kJ mol?1). 1H NMR association constants (KXB) determined in CDCl3 and [D6]acetone vary from 2.0×100 to >108 m ?1 and correlate well with the calculated donor×acceptor complexation enthalpies found between ?38.4 and ?77.5 kJ mol?1. In X‐ray crystal structures, the N‐iodosaccharin‐PyNO complexes manifest short interaction ratios (RXB) between 0.65–0.67 for the N?I????O?N+ halogen bond.  相似文献

Ion pair speciation of ionic liquids(ILs) has an important effect on the physical and chemical properties of ILs and recognition of the structure of ion pairs in solution is essential. It has been reported that ion pairs of some ILs can be formed by hydrogen bonding interactions between cations and anions of them. Considering the fact that far-IR(FIR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool in indicating the intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonding, in this work, this spectroscopic technique has been combined with molecular dynamic(MD) simulation and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy(~1H NMR) to investigate ion pairs of aprotic ILs [Bmim][NO_3], [BuPy][NO_3], [Pyr_(14)][NO_3], [PP_(14)][NO_3] and [Bu-choline][NO_3] in aqueous IL mixtures. The FIR spectra have been assigned with the aid of density functional theory(DFT) calculations, and the results are used to understand the effect of cationic nature on the structure of ion pairs. It is found that contact ion pairs formed in the neat aprotic ILs by hydrogen bonding interactions between cation and anion, were still maintained in aqueous solutions up to high water mole fraction(say 0.80 for [BuPy][NO3]). When water content was increased to a critical mole fraction of water(say 0.83 for [BuPy][NO3]), the contact ion pairs could be transformed into solvent-separated ion pairs due to the formation of the hydrogen bonding between ions and water. With the further dilution of the aqueous ILs solution, the solvent-separated ion pairs was finally turned into free cations and free anions(fully hydrated cations or anions). The concentrations of the ILs at which the contact ion pairs were transformed into solvent-separated ion pairs and solvent-separated ion pairs were transformed into free ions(fully hydrated ion) were dependent on the cationic structures. These information provides direct spectral evidence for ion pair structures of the aprotic ILs in aqueous solution. MD simulation and ~1H NMR results support the conclusion drawn from FIR spectra investigations.  相似文献
