The notion of continuity for continuous-time information sources which was introduced by Pinsker has found numerous applications in information theory. Continuity in probability is an important concept in the theory of continuous-time stochastic processes. It is shown that these two forms of continuity are equivalent for stationary processes whose state space is a separable metric space.  相似文献

Under the axiom of choice, every first countable space is a Fréchet‐Urysohn space. Although, in its absence even ? may fail to be a sequential space. Our goal in this paper is to discuss under which set‐theoretic conditions some topological classes, such as the first countable spaces, the metric spaces, or the subspaces of ?, are classes of Fréchet‐Urysohn or sequential spaces. In this context, it is seen that there are metric spaces which are not sequential spaces. This fact raises the question of knowing if the completion of a metric space exists and it is unique. The answer depends on the definition of completion. Among other results it is shown that: every first countable space is a sequential space if and only if the axiom of countable choice holds, the sequential closure is idempotent in ? if and only if the axiom of countable choice holds for families of subsets of ?, and every metric space has a unique ‐completion. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate constructively the relationship between proximal convergence, uniform sequential convergence and uniform convergence for sequences of mappings between apartness spaces. It is also shown that if the second space satisfies the Efremovic axiom, then proximal convergence preserves strong continuity.  相似文献

Let M be a convex Chebyshev subset of a uniformly convex and uniformly smooth Banach space. It is proved that the metric projection PM of X onto M is uniformly continuous on every bounded subset of X. We prove that quasiconformal maps onto domains which satisfy a suitable growth condition on the quasihyperbolic metric are uniformly continuous when the source domain is equipped with the internal metric. The obtained modulus of continuity and the growth assumption on the quasihyperbolic metric are shown to be essentially sharp. As a tool, we prove a new capacity estimate.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the continuities of the metric projection in a nonreflexive Banach space X, which improve the results in [X.N. Fang, J.H. Wang, Convexity and continuity of metric projection, Math. Appl. 14 (1) (2001) 47–51; P.D. Liu, Y.L. Hou, A convergence theorem of martingales in the limit, Northeast. Math. J. 6 (2) (1990) 227–234; H.J. Wang, Some results on the continuity of metric projections, Math. Appl. 8 (1) (1995) 80–84]. Under the assumption that X has some convexities, we discuss the relationship between approximative compactness of a subset A of X and continuity of the metric projection PA. We also give a representation theorem for the metric projection to a hyperplane in dual space X and discuss its continuity.  相似文献

Abstract

Given a topological abelian group G, we study the class of strongly sequentially continuous functions on G. Strong sequential continuity is a property intermediate between sequential continuity and uniform sequential continuity, which appeared naturally in the study of smooth functions on Banach spaces. In this paper, we shall mainly concentrate on the gap between strong sequential continuity and uniform sequential continuity. It turns out that if G has some completeness property—for example, if it is completely metrizable—then all strongly sequentially continuous functions on G are uniformly sequentially continuous. On the other hand, we exhibit a large and natural class of groups for which the two notions differ. This class is defined by a property reminiscent of the classical Dirichlet theorem; it includes all dense sugroups of R generated by an increasing sequence of Dirichlet sets, and groups of the form (X, w), where X is a separable Banach space failing the Schur property. Finally, we show that the family of bounded, real-valued strongly sequentially continuous functions on G is a closed subalgebra of l∞(G).  相似文献

In this paper a characterization is obtained of those bounded operators on a Hilbert space at which the spectrum is continuous, where the spectrum is considered as a function whose domain is the set of all operators with the norm topology and whose range is the set of compact subsets of the plane with the Hausdorff metric. We use the heat equation to establish the Lipschitz continuity of Cheeger-harmonic functions in certain metric spaces. The metric spaces under consideration are those that are endowed with a doubling measure supporting a (1,2)-Poincaré inequality and in addition supporting a corresponding Sobolev-Poincaré-type inequality for the modification of the measure obtained via the heat kernel. Examples are given to illustrate the necessity of our assumptions on these spaces. We also provide an example to show that in the general setting the best possible regularity for the Cheeger-harmonic functions is Lipschitz continuity.  相似文献

In this paper we prove a characterization of continuity for polynomials on a normed space. Namely, we prove that a polynomial is continuous if and only if it maps compact sets into compact sets. We also provide a partial answer to the question as to whether a polynomial is continuous if and only if it transforms connected sets into connected sets. These results motivate the natural question as to how many non-continuous polynomials there are on an infinite dimensional normed space. A problem on the lineability of the sets of non-continuous polynomials and multilinear mappings on infinite dimensional normed spaces is answered.  相似文献

In the paper we present results on the continuity of nonlinear superposition operators acting in the space of functions of bounded variation in the sense of Jordan. It is shown that the continuity of an autonomous superposition operator is automatically guaranteed if the acting condition is met. We also give a simple proof of the fact that a nonautonomous superposition operator generated by a continuously differentiable function is uniformly continuous on bounded sets. Moreover, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the continuity of a superposition operator (autonomous or nonautonomous) in a general setting. Thus, we give the answers to two basic open problems mentioned in the monograph (Appell et al. in Bounded variation and around, series in nonlinear analysis and application, De Gruyter, Berlin, 2014).  相似文献
