Magnetization reversal processes and domain structures have been studied in Mo(1 1 0)/Co(0 0 0 1)/Au(1 1 1) structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy on monocrystalline (11–20) sapphire substrates. Wedge-shaped samples with different Co thickness gradients relative to the Mo [0 0 1] direction were fabricated. Observation of the domain structure was performed at room temperature using Kerr microscopy in a Co thickness range varying from 5 to 50 nm, where the magnetization is oriented in the plane of the sample. A Co thickness-dependent coercivity field was determined through analysis of the domain wall position during the reversal process. A preferential orientation of magnetic domain walls was found, with the domains being needle-like. The orientation, as well as the size of the needles, depends on the Co thickness and the orientation of the magnetic field applied in the sample plane.  相似文献

The magnetic properties of Co nanostructures and a Co monolayer on W(0 0 1) have been studied in the framework of density functional theory. Different geometries such as planar and three-dimensional clusters have been considered, with cluster sizes varying between 2 and 13 atoms. The calculations were performed using the real-space linear muffin-tin orbital method (RS-LMTO-ASA). With respect to the stability of the magnetic state, we predict an antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure for the ground state of the planar Co clusters and a ferromagnetic (FM) state for the three-dimensional clusters. For the three-dimensional clusters, one of the AFM arrangements leads to frustration due to the competing FM and AFM exchange interactions between different atoms in the cluster, and gives rise to a non-collinear state with energy close to that of the FM ground state. The relative role of the Co–Co and Co–W exchange interactions is also investigated.  相似文献

Co(0 0 0 1)hcp/Fe(1 1 0)bcc epitaxial magnetic bi-layer films were successfully prepared on SrTiO3(1 1 1) substrates. The crystallographic properties of Co/Fe epitaxial magnetic bi-layer films were investigated. Fe(1 1 0)bcc soft magnetic layer grew epitaxially on SrTiO3(1 1 1) substrate with two type variants, Nishiyama–Wasserman and Kurdjumov–Sachs relationships. An hcp-Co single-crystal layer is obtained on Ru(0 0 0 1)hcp interlayer, while hcp-Co layer formed on Au(1 1 1)fcc or Ag(1 1 1)fcc interlayer is strained and may involve fcc-Co phase. It has been shown possible to prepare Co/Fe epitaxial magnetic bi-layer films which can be usable for patterned media application.  相似文献

The magnetic domain structure of Fe wires, ribbons and islands with different shapes that have been prepared under ultra high vacuum conditions on W(1 1 0) are studied with spin polarized low energy electron microscopy. The dimensions of the nanostructures, which are of the order of tens and hundreds of nm, can be controlled by the temperature at which they are produced, by the average Fe coverage and by the substrate morphology. The domain structure of the nanostructures depends on their shape and is determined by the competition between magnetoelastic, shape and magnetocrystalline anisotropies.  相似文献

We report on tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR), current–voltage (IV) characteristics and low-frequency noise in epitaxially grown Fe(1 1 0)/MgO(1 1 1)/Fe(1 1 0) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with dimensions from 2×2 to 20×20 μm2. The evaluated MgO energy barrier (0.50±0.08 eV), the barrier width (13.1±0.5 Å) as well as the resistance times area product (7±1 MΩ μm2) show relatively small variation, confirming a high quality epitaxy and uniformity of all MTJs studied. At low temperatures (T<10 K) inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) shows anomalies related to phonons (symmetric structures below 100 meV) and asymmetric features above 200 meV. We explain the asymmetric features in IETS as due to generation of electron standing waves in one of the Fe electrodes. The noise power, though exhibiting a large variation, was observed to be roughly anti-correlated with the TMR. Surprisingly, for the largest junctions we observed a strong enhancement of the normalized low-frequency noise in the antiparallel magnetic configuration. This behavior could be related to the influence of magnetostriction on the characteristics of the insulating barrier through changes in local barrier defects structure.  相似文献

We present experimental results on the structural and magnetic properties of series of Fe thin films evaporated onto Si(1 1 1), Si(1 0 0) and glass substrates. The Fe thickness, t, ranges from 6 to110 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to study the structure and surface morphology of these films. The magnetic properties were investigated by means of the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) techniques. The Fe films grow with (1 1 0) texture; as t increases, this (1 1 0) texture becomes weaker for Fe/Si, while for Fe/glass, the texture changes from (1 1 0) to (2 1 1). Grains are larger in Fe/Si than in Fe/glass. The effective magnetization, 4πMeff, inferred from BLS was found to be lower than the 4πMS bulk value. Stress induced anisotropy might be in part responsible for this difference. MFM images reveal stripe domain structure for the 110 nm thick Fe/Si(1 0 0) only.  相似文献

The stability of spin-spiral and domain wall structures in an Fe monolayer on a W(1 1 0) substrate is theoretically investigated. By analyzing the exchange parameters obtained from first principles total energy calculations, we find that a competition between the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and long-distant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions leads to a stabilization of the spin-spiral structures. When the strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) arising from the Fe/W(1 1 0) interface is introduced, however, the formation of the spin-spiral structures is suppressed and the ground state appears to be the ferromagnetic state—as observed in experiments. In addition, the strong MCA is found to play a key role in determining the domain wall structures.  相似文献

Growth and surface morphology of epitaxial Fe(1 1 0)/MgO(1 1 1)/Fe(1 1 0) trilayers constituting a magnetic tunnel junction were investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM reveals a grain-like growth mode of MgO on Fe(1 1 0) resulting in dense MgO(1 1 1) films at room temperature as well as at 250 °C. As observed by STM, initial deposition of MgO leads to a partial oxidation of the Fe(1 1 0) surface which is confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy. The top Fe layer deposited on MgO(1 1 1) at room temperature is relatively rough consisting of clusters which can be transformed by annealing to an atomically flat epitaxial Fe(1 1 0) film.  相似文献

Using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method, thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy of ultrathin FeCo alloy films in the range of 1 monolayer (ML) to 5 ML coverage on Pd(0 0 1) surface has been explored. We have found that the FeCo alloy films have close to half metallic state and well-known surface enhancement in thin film magnetism is observed in Fe atom, whereas the Co has rather stable magnetic moment. However, the largest magnetic moment in Fe and Co is found at 1 ML thickness. Interestingly, it has been observed that the interface magnetic moments of Fe and Co are almost the same as those of surface elements. The similar trend exists in orbital magnetic moment. This indicates that the strong hybridization between interface FeCo alloy and Pd gives rise to the large magnetic moment. Theoretically calculated magnetic anisotropy shows that the 1 ML FeCo alloy has in-plane magnetization, but the spin reorientation transition (SRT) from in-plane to perpendicular magnetization is observed above 2 ML thickness with huge magnetic anisotropy energy. The maximum magnetic anisotropy energy for perpendicular magnetization is as large as 0.3 meV/atom at 3 ML film thickness with saturation magnetization of . Besides, the calculated X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has been presented.  相似文献

The structure and magnetism of thin epitaxial Fe layers grown on Cu(0 0 1) is investigated by grazing scattering of fast H and He atoms. Information on the atomic structure of the film and substrate surfaces is obtained by making use of ion beam triangulation with protons. The magnetic behavior is studied via the polarization of light emitted after capture of spin-polarized electrons into excited atomic terms during scattering of He atoms. For the formation of bcc(1 1 0)-like Fe films at higher coverages, we detect differences in structural and magnetic properties for room and low temperature growth. We suggest that the crystalline structure depends on the film morphology and that Cu impurities affect the magnetic properties.  相似文献

The spin wave excitation and its size effect has been studied in Al-capped Fe films grown on low-symmetry GaAs(1 1 3)A substrates. The temperature dependence of saturation magnetization follows an effective Bloch's law as long as magnetization remains larger than about 70% of its saturation value. A significant increase of the spin wave parameter B is found in Al-capped ultrathin Fe films grown on GaAs(1 1 3)A compared to bulk Fe, Fe films on GaAs(0 0 1) and other systems. This is explained as a result of the reduction in uniaxial magnetic anisotropy observed in this orientation for the same thickness range. However, this observed uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is found to be a likely reason for stabilizing the ferromagnetism.  相似文献

The (1 0 0) SrTiO3 substrate has emerged as the oxide substrate of choice for the deposition of a wide variety of materials. The substrate's unavoidable miscut leads to a step-terrace morphology when heated to high temperatures. This morphological transition is accompanied by an atomic scale repositioning of the uppermost terrace atoms, the nature of which is strongly dependent on the substrate temperature and ambient atmosphere used. Here, we report the deposition of CdTe films on the as-received and reconstructed surfaces of (1 0 0) SrTiO3. The as-received substrate gives rise to a [1 1 1] CdTe film with four equally distributed in-plane grain orientations. The surface reconstruction, on the other hand, gives rise to an unprecedented reorientation of the film's grain structure. For this case, a [2 1 1] CdTe film emerges having twelve unevenly distributed in-plane orientations. We attribute the film's grain structure to an atomic scale surface reconstruction, with the anisotropic distribution of grain-types arising from a preferential formation due to the step edges.  相似文献

The room temperature growth mode and the interface reaction of Fe films on single crystalline ZnO(0 0 0 1) substrates prepared in ultra high vacuum (UHV) has been investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopy (XPS, AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and low energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS). The results show that Fe grows in the pseudo layer-by-layer mode. At ambient temperature the deposited Fe film reduces the underlying ZnO single crystal resulting in FeO at the interface and metallic Zn, which partially diffuses into the remaining Fe overlayer. Annealing leads to a stepwise oxidation of the Fe to FeO (670 K) and Fe2O3 (820 K). The Fe2O3 mixes with the substrate resulting in two (1 1 1) oriented textures of a spinel phase found by electron backscatter diffraction analysis (EBSD). Fe-based spin-injection may play a vital role for ZnO-based spintronic devices.  相似文献

Epitaxial Fe(1 1 0) films with thicknesses of 100-800 nm on Cu(0 0 1) and Ni(0 0 1) buffer layers grown on MgO(0 0 1) substrates have been fabricated. These films contain Fe(1 1 0) crystallites which are in the Pitsch orientation relationship. Magnetization and the fourfold in-plane magnetic anisotropy constants of these films have been determined by torque measurements. All the samples under study are characterized by a fourfold magnetic anisotropy with easy axes parallel to the [1 0 0] and [0 1 0] directions of Cu(0 0 1) and Ni(0 0 1) layers. The measured values of the constant for Fe(1 1 0)/Cu(0 0 1) are found to depend on deposition temperature; a maximum value of (2.5±0.1)×105 erg/cm3 is reached after annealing at 600 °С. The in-plane torque measurements on Fe(1 1 0)/Ni(0 0 1) bilayers obtained at 300 °С, on the other hand, exhibit a constant value of (2.7±0.1)×105 erg/cm3. Assuming an exchange interaction between the Fe(1 1 0) crystallites, which are in the Pitsch orientation relationship, the fourfold in-plane magnetic anisotropy has been calculated as 2.8×105 erg/cm3. The deviations of the experimental values from the predicted one may be explained by the formation of a polycrystalline phase within the Fe(1 1 0) layer and a partial disorientation of the epitaxial crystallites.  相似文献

The structure, energetics and magnetic properties of the quasihexagonal reconstruction of the Ir(1 0 0) surface and nanostructures formed by Fe atoms on this surface have been investigated using first-principles density functional theory with generalized gradient corrections. We find the reconstructed (1 × 5) surface to be 0.10 eV/(1 × 1) area lower in energy than the unreconstructed surface and we demonstrate that first-principles calculations can achieve quantitative agreement with experiment even for such long-period and deep-going reconstructions. For Fe coverage of 0.4 monolayers (ML) we have studied the stripe-like structure with biatomic Fe rows placed in the troughs of the (1 × 5)-reconstructed surface. Results of nonmagnetic calculations agree well with the structure inferred from STM data. Higher Fe coverages lead to a de-reconstruction of the Ir substrate. At 0.8 ML coverage a surface compound with composition Fe4Ir is formed, which shows an appreciable buckling. In this case, a ferromagnetic calculation leads to good agreement with the low-temperature LEED data. We predict that the (1 × 5) periodicity of the mixed interface layer will persist also in thicker films with a pure Fe surface. Films with 1-4 ML Fe are predicted to be tetragonally distorted and ferromagnetic, with an axial ratio corresponding well to an elastic distortion of the Fe lattice.  相似文献

We report on the growth of ultrathin epitaxial Co films on Fe(1 1 0) examined by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). At room temperature Co forms pseudomorphic, ideally ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) layers for the first two monolayers as confirmed by atomically resolved STM images. This is in contrast to the related case of Co/Cr(1 1 0) where a superstructure occurs in the second layer. The third monolayer forms a close-packed structure and causes a transformation of the buried second monolayer into a close-packed structure. The Fe(1 1 0) substrate strongly influences the electronic structure of the first Co monolayer as concluded from the dI/dU spectra. This influence is less important for the second monolayer. The measured local density-of-states function for the bcc Co double layer is in agreement with theoretical predictions for bcc Co.  相似文献

Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (SP-STM/STS) has been performed on clean and sulfur-covered three-dimensional Fe islands on W(1 1 0). Upon dosing with H2S the island surface is covered with 1/3 ML S leading to a c(3 × 1) reconstruction. The characteristic magnetic vortex structure is observable before and after dosing, even though the electronic structure of the surface is modified as is shown by SP-STS.  相似文献

The oxidation of the W(1 0 0) surface at elevated temperatures has been studied using room temperature STM and LEED. High exposure of the clean surface to O2 at 1500 K followed by flash-annealing to 2300 K in UHV results in the formation of a novel p(3 × 1) reconstruction, which is imaged by STM as a missing-row structure on the surface. Upon further annealing in UHV, this surface develops a floreted LEED pattern characteristic of twinned microdomains of monoclinic WOx, while maintaining the p(3 × 1) missing-row structure. Atomically resolved STM images of this surface show a complex domain structure with single and double W〈0 1 0〉 rows coexisting on the surface in different domains.  相似文献

Electronic, magnetic and structural properties of atomic oxygen adsorbed in on-surface and subsurface sites at the two most densely packed iron surfaces are investigated using density functional theory combined with a thermodynamics formalism. Oxygen coverages varying from a quarter to two monolayers (MLs) are considered. At a 1/4 ML coverage, the most stable on-surface adsorption sites are the twofold long bridge sites on the (1 1 0), and the fourfold-hollow sites on the (1 0 0) surface. The presence of on-surface oxygen atoms enhances the magnetic moments of the atoms of the two topmost Fe layers. Detailed results on the surface magnetic properties, due to O incorporation, are presented as well. Subsurface adsorption is found unfavored. The most stable subsurface O, in tetrahedral positions at the (1 0 0) and octahedral ones at the (1 1 0) surface, are characterized by substantially lower binding than that in the on-surface sites. Subsurface oxygen increases the interplanar distance between the uppermost Fe layers. The preadsorbed oxygen overlayer enhances binding of subsurface O atoms, particularly for tetrahedral sites beneath the (1 1 0) surface.  相似文献
