For digraphs D and H, a mapping f:V(D)→V(H) is a homomorphism ofDtoH if uvA(D) implies f(u)f(v)∈A(H). For a fixed directed or undirected graph H and an input graph D, the problem of verifying whether there exists a homomorphism of D to H has been studied in a large number of papers. We study an optimization version of this decision problem. Our optimization problem is motivated by a real-world problem in defence logistics and was introduced recently by the authors and M. Tso.Suppose we are given a pair of digraphs D,H and a cost ci(u) for each uV(D) and iV(H). The cost of a homomorphism f of D to H is ∑uV(D)cf(u)(u). Let H be a fixed digraph. The minimum cost homomorphism problem for H, MinHOMP(H), is stated as follows: For input digraph D and costs ci(u) for each uV(D) and iV(H), verify whether there is a homomorphism of D to H and, if it does exist, find such a homomorphism of minimum cost. In our previous paper we obtained a dichotomy classification of the time complexity of when H is a semicomplete digraph. In this paper we extend the classification to semicomplete k-partite digraphs, k≥3, and obtain such a classification for bipartite tournaments.  相似文献

For a fixed digraph H, the homomorphism problem is to decide whether an input digraph D admits a homomorphism to H or not, and is denoted as HOM(H).An optimization version of the homomorphism problem was motivated by a real-world problem in defence logistics and was introduced in Gutin, Rafiey, Yeo and Tso (2006) [13]. If each vertex uV(D) is associated with costs ci(u),iV(H), then the cost of the homomorphism f is ∑uV(D)cf(u)(u). For each fixed digraph H, we have the minimum cost homomorphism problem forH and denote it as MinHOM(H). The problem is to decide, for an input graph D with costs ci(u),uV(D),iV(H), whether there exists a homomorphism of D to H and, if one exists, to find one of minimum cost.Although a complete dichotomy classification of the complexity of MinHOM(H) for a digraph H remains an unsolved problem, complete dichotomy classifications for MinHOM(H) were proved when H is a semicomplete digraph Gutin, Rafiey and Yeo (2006) [10], and a semicomplete multipartite digraph Gutin, Rafiey and Yeo (2008) [12] and [11]. In these studies, it is assumed that the digraph H is loopless. In this paper, we present a full dichotomy classification for semicomplete digraphs with possible loops, which solves a problem in Gutin and Kim (2008) [9].  相似文献

Given graphs G, H, and lists L(v) ? V(H), v ε V(G), a list homomorphism of G to H with respect to the lists L is a mapping f : V(G) → V(H) such that uv ε E(G) implies f(u)f(v) ε E(H), and f(v) ε L(v) for all v ε V(G). The list homomorphism problem for a fixed graph H asks whether or not an input graph G, together with lists L(v) ? V(H), v ε V(G), admits a list homomorphism with respect to L. In two earlier papers, we classified the complexity of the list homomorphism problem in two important special cases: When H is a reflexive graph (every vertex has a loop), the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is an interval graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. When H is an irreflexive graph (no vertex has a loop), the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is bipartite and H is a circular arc graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. In this paper, we extend these classifications to arbitrary graphs H (each vertex may or may not have a loop). We introduce a new class of graphs, called bi‐arc graphs, which contains both reflexive interval graphs (and no other reflexive graphs), and bipartite graphs with circular arc complements (and no other irreflexive graphs). We show that the problem is polynomial time solvable when H is a bi‐arc graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. Given a graph G, a proper labelingf of G is a one-to-one function from V(G) onto {1,2,…,|V(G)|}. For a proper labeling f of G, the profile widthwf(v) of a vertex v is the minimum value of f(v)−f(x), where x belongs to the closed neighborhood of v. The profile of a proper labelingfofG, denoted by Pf(G), is the sum of all the wf(v), where vV(G). The profile ofG is the minimum value of Pf(G), where f runs over all proper labeling of G. In this paper, we show that if the vertices of a graph G can be ordered to satisfy a special neighborhood property, then so can the graph G×Qn. This can be used to determine the profile of Qn and Km×Qn.  相似文献

The list homomorphism problem for H is a generalization of the homomorphism problem for H, where every vertex xV(D) is assigned a set Lx of possible colors (vertices of H).The following optimization version of these decision problems generalizes the list homomorphism problem and was introduced in Gutin et al. For a fixed digraph H, the minimum cost homomorphism problem for H is stated as follows: for an input digraph D and costs ci(u) for each uV(D) and iV(H), verify whether there is a homomorphism of D to H and, if one exists, find such a homomorphism of minimum cost.We obtain dichotomy classifications of the computational complexity of the list homomorphism and minimum cost homomorphism problems, when H is a semicomplete digraph (digraph in which there is at least one arc between any two vertices). Our dichotomy for the list homomorphism problem coincides with the one obtained by Bang-Jensen, Hell and MacGillivray in 1988 for the homomorphism problem when H is a semicomplete digraph: both problems are polynomial solvable if H has at most one cycle; otherwise, both problems are NP-complete. The dichotomy for the minimum cost homomorphism problem is different: the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is acyclic or H is a cycle of length 2 or 3; otherwise, the problem is NP-hard.  相似文献

An L(p,q)-labeling of a graph G is an assignment f from vertices of G to the set of non-negative integers {0,1,…,λ} such that |f(u)−f(v)|≥p if u and v are adjacent, and |f(u)−f(v)|≥q if u and v are at distance 2 apart. The minimum value of λ for which G has L(p,q)-labeling is denoted by λp,q(G). The L(p,q)-labeling problem is related to the channel assignment problem for wireless networks.In this paper, we present a polynomial time algorithm for computing L(p,q)-labeling of a bipartite permutation graph G such that the largest label is at most (2p−1)+q(bc(G)−2), where bc(G) is the biclique number of G. Since λp,q(G)≥p+q(bc(G)−2) for any bipartite graph G, the upper bound is at most p−1 far from optimal.  相似文献

Let G be a simple graph without isolated vertices with vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G). A function f:E(G)?{−1,1} is said to be a signed star dominating function on G if ∑eE(v)f(e)≥1 for every vertex v of G, where E(v)={uvE(G)∣uN(v)}. A set {f1,f2,…,fd} of signed star dominating functions on G with the property that for each eE(G), is called a signed star dominating family (of functions) on G. The maximum number of functions in a signed star dominating family on G is the signed star domatic number of G, denoted by dSS(G).In this paper we study the properties of the signed star domatic number dSS(G). Let G be a connected graph with diameter diam(G). The radio number for G, denoted by rn(G), is the smallest integer k such that there exists a function f:V(G)→{0,1,2,…,k} with the following satisfied for all vertices u and v: |f(u)-f(v)|?diam(G)-dG(u,v)+1, where dG(u,v) is the distance between u and v. We prove a lower bound for the radio number of trees, and characterize the trees achieving this bound. Moreover, we prove another lower bound for the radio number of spiders (trees with at most one vertex of degree more than two) and characterize the spiders achieving this bound. Our results generalize the radio number for paths obtained by Liu and Zhu.  相似文献

The eccentric digraphED(G) of a digraph G represents the binary relation, defined on the vertex set of G, of being ‘eccentric’; that is, there is an arc from u to v in ED(G) if and only if v is at maximum distance from u in G. A digraph G is said to be eccentric if there exists a digraph H such that G=ED(H). This paper is devoted to the study of the following two questions: what digraphs are eccentric and when the relation of being eccentric is symmetric.We present a characterization of eccentric digraphs, which in the undirected case says that a graph G is eccentric iff its complement graph is either self-centered of radius two or it is the union of complete graphs. As a consequence, we obtain that all trees except those with diameter 3 are eccentric digraphs. We also determine when ED(G) is symmetric in the cases when G is a graph or a digraph that is not strongly connected.  相似文献

A simple, finite graph G is called a time graph (equivalently, an indifference graph) if there is an injective real function f on the vertices v(G) such that vivje(G) for vivj if and only if |f(vi) ? f(vj)| ≤ 1. A clique of a graph G is a maximal complete subgraph of G. The clique graph K(G) of a graph G is the intersection graph of the cliques of G. It will be shown that the clique graph of a time graph is a time graph, and that every time graph is the clique graph of some time graph. Denote the clique graph of a clique graph of G by K2(G), and inductively, denote K(Km?1(G)) by Km(G). Define the index indx(G) of a connected time graph G as the smallest integer n such that Kn(G) is the trivial graph. It will be shown that the index of a time graph is equal to its diameter. Finally, bounds on the diameter of a time graph will be derived.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a simple graph. A subset SV is a dominating set of G, if for any vertex uV-S, there exists a vertex vS such that uvE. The domination number of G, γ(G), equals the minimum cardinality of a dominating set. A Roman dominating function on graph G=(V,E) is a function f:V→{0,1,2} satisfying the condition that every vertex v for which f(v)=0 is adjacent to at least one vertex u for which f(u)=2. The weight of a Roman dominating function is the value f(V)=∑vVf(v). The Roman domination number of a graph G, denoted by γR(G), equals the minimum weight of a Roman dominating function on G. In this paper, for any integer k(2?k?γ(G)), we give a characterization of graphs for which γR(G)=γ(G)+k, which settles an open problem in [E.J. Cockayne, P.M. Dreyer Jr, S.M. Hedetniemi et al. An edge-labeling λ for a directed graph G has a weak sense of direction (WSD) if there is a function f that satisfies the condition that for any node u and for any two label sequences α and α generated by non-trivial walks on G starting at u, f(α)=f(α) if and only if the two walks end at the same node. The function f is referred to as a coding function of λ. The weak sense of direction number of G, WSD(G), is the smallest integer k so that G has a WSD-labeling that uses k labels. It is known that WSD(G)≥Δ+(G), where Δ+(G) is the maximum outdegree of G.Let us say that a function τ:V(G)→V(H) is an embedding from G onto H if τ demonstrates that G is isomorphic to a subgraph of H. We show that there are deep connections between WSD-labelings and graph embeddings. First, we prove that when fH is the coding function that naturally accompanies a Cayley graph H and G has a node that can reach every other node in the graph, then G has a WSD-labeling that has fH as a coding function if and only if G can be embedded onto H. Additionally, we show that the problem “Given G, does G have a WSD-labeling that uses a particular coding function f?” is NP-complete even when G and f are fairly simple.Second, when D is a distributive lattice, H(D) is its Hasse diagram and G(D) is its cover graph, then WSD(H(D))=Δ+(H(D))=d, where d is the smallest integer d so that H(D) can be embedded onto the d-dimensional mesh. Along the way, we also prove that the isometric dimension of G(D) is its diameter, and the lattice dimension of G(D) is Δ+(H(D)). Our WSD-labelings are poset-based, making use of Birkhoff’s characterization of distributive lattices and Dilworth’s theorem for posets.  相似文献

The minimum of the values of , taken over all signed star dominating functions f on G, is called the signed star domination number of G and is denoted by γSS(G). This paper studies a variation of domination in graphs called rainbow domination. For a positive integer k, a k-rainbow dominating function of a graph G is a function f from V(G) to the set of all subsets of {1,2,…,k} such that for any vertex v with f(v)=0? we have ∪uNG(v)f(u)={1,2,…,k}. The 1-rainbow domination is the same as the ordinary domination. The k-rainbow domination problem is to determine the k-rainbow domination number of a graph G, that is the minimum value of ∑vV(G)|f(v)| where f runs over all k-rainbow dominating functions of G. In this paper, we prove that the k-rainbow domination problem is NP-complete even when restricted to chordal graphs or bipartite graphs. We then give a linear-time algorithm for the k-rainbow domination problem on trees. For a given tree T, we also determine the smallest k such that .  相似文献

An immersion of a graph H into a graph G is a one-to-one mapping f: V (H) → V (G) and a collection of edge-disjoint paths in G, one for each edge of H, such that the path P uv corresponding to edge uv has endpoints f(u) and f(v). The immersion is strong if the paths P uv are internally disjoint from f(V (H)). It is proved that for every positive integer Ht, every simple graph of minimum degree at least 200t contains a strong immersion of the complete graph K t . For dense graphs one can say even more. If the graph has order n and has 2cn 2 edges, then there is a strong immersion of the complete graph on at least c 2 n vertices in G in which each path P uv is of length 2. As an application of these results, we resolve a problem raised by Paul Seymour by proving that the line graph of every simple graph with average degree d has a clique minor of order at least cd 3/2, where c>0 is an absolute constant. For small values of t, 1≤t≤7, every simple graph of minimum degree at least t?1 contains an immersion of K t (Lescure and Meyniel [13], DeVos et al. [6]). Let G be a graph and A an Abelian group. Denote by F(G, A) the set of all functions from E(G) to A. Denote by D an orientation of E(G). For fF(G,A), an (A,f)-coloring of G under the orientation D is a function c : V(G)↦A such that for every directed edge uv from u to v, c(u)−c(v) ≠ f(uv). G is A-colorable under the orientation D if for any function fF(G, A), G has an (A, f)-coloring. It is known that A-colorability is independent of the choice of the orientation. The group chromatic number of a graph G is defined to be the least positive integer m for which G is A-colorable for any Abelian group A of order ≥m, and is denoted by χg(G). In this note we will prove the following results. (1) Let H1 and H2 be two subgraphs of G such that V(H1)∩V(H2)=∅ and V(H1)∪V(H2)=V(G). Then χg(G)≤min{max{χg(H1), maxvV(H2)deg(v,G)+1},max{χg(H2), maxuV(H1) deg (u, G) + 1}}. We also show that this bound is best possible. A sequence 〈d1,d2,…,dn〉 of non-negative integers is graphical if it is the degree sequence of some graph, that is, there exists a graph G on n vertices whose ith vertex has degree di, for 1≤in. The notion of a graphical sequence has a natural reformulation and generalization in terms of factors of complete graphs.If H=(V,E) is a graph and g and f are integer-valued functions on the vertex set V, then a (g,f)-factor of H is a subgraph G=(V,F) of H whose degree at each vertex vV lies in the interval [g(v),f(v)]. Thus, a (0,1)-factor is just a matching of H and a (1, 1)-factor is a perfect matching of H. If H is complete then a (g,f)-factor realizes a degree sequence that is consistent with the sequence of intervals 〈[g(v1),f(v1)],[g(v2),f(v2)],…,[g(vn),f(vn)]〉.Graphical sequences have been extensively studied and admit several elegant characterizations. We are interested in extending these characterizations to non-graphical sequences by introducing a natural measure of “near-graphical”. We do this in the context of minimally deficient (g,f)-factors of complete graphs. Our main result is a simple linear-time greedy algorithm for constructing minimally deficient (g,f)-factors in complete graphs that generalizes the method of Hakimi and Havel (for constructing (f,f)-factors in complete graphs, when possible). It has the added advantage of producing a certificate of minimum deficiency (through a generalization of the Erdös-Gallai characterization of (f,f)-factors in complete graphs) at no additional cost.  相似文献

Given a graph G, a function f:V(G)→{1,2,…,k} is a k-ranking of G if f(u)=f(v) implies every u-v path contains a vertex w such that f(w)>f(u). A k-ranking is minimal if the reduction of any label greater than 1 violates the described ranking property. The arank number of a graph, denoted ψr(G), is the largest k such that G has a minimal k-ranking. We present new results involving minimal k-rankings of paths. A broadcast on a graph G is a function such that for each vV, f(v)≤e(v) (the eccentricity of v). The broadcast number of G is the minimum value of ∑vVf(v) among all broadcasts f for which each vertex of G is within distance f(v) from some vertex v having f(v)≥1. This number is bounded above by the radius of G as well as by its domination number. Graphs for which the broadcast number is equal to the radius are called radial; the problem of characterizing radial trees was first discussed in [J. Dunbar, D. Erwin, T. Haynes, S.M. Hedetniemi, S.T. Hedetniemi, Broadcasts in graphs, Discrete Appl. Math. (154) (2006) 59-75].We provide a characterization of radial trees as well as a geometrical interpretation of our characterization.  相似文献

Let k ≥ 2 be an integer. A function f: V(G) → {?1, 1} defined on the vertex set V(G) of a graph G is a signed k-independence function if the sum of its function values over any closed neighborhood is at most k ? 1. That is, Σ xN[v] f(x) ≤ k ? 1 for every vV(G), where N[v] consists of v and every vertex adjacent to v. The weight of a signed k-independence function f is w(f) = Σ vV(G) f(v). The maximum weight w(f), taken over all signed k-independence functions f on G, is the signed k-independence number α s k (G) of G. In this work, we mainly present upper bounds on α s k (G), as for example α s k (G) ≤ n ? 2?(Δ(G) + 2 ? k)/2?, and we prove the Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequality $\alpha _S^k \left( G \right) + \alpha _S^k \left( {\bar G} \right) \leqslant n + 2k - 3$ , where n is the order, Δ(G) the maximum degree and $\bar G$ the complement of the graph G. Some of our results imply well-known bounds on the signed 2-independence number.  相似文献
