A set of vertices S resolves a connected graph G if every vertex is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to the vertices in S. The metric dimension of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a resolving set. In this paper we undertake the metric dimension of infinite locally finite graphs, i.e., those infinite graphs such that all its vertices have finite degree. We give some necessary conditions for an infinite graph to have finite metric dimension and characterize infinite trees with finite metric dimension. We also establish some general results about the metric dimension of the Cartesian product of finite and infinite graphs, and obtain the metric dimension of the Cartesian product of several families of graphs.  相似文献

Let G be a graph with vertex set V(G). A set C of vertices of G is g-convex if for every pair \({u, v \in C}\) the vertices on every uv geodesic (i.e. shortest uv path) belong to C. If the only g-convex sets of G are the empty set, V(G), all singletons and all edges, then G is called a g-minimal graph. It is shown that a graph is g-minimal if and only if it is triangle-free and if it has the property that the convex hull of every pair of non-adjacent vertices is V(G). Several properties of g-minimal graphs are established and it is shown that every triangle-free graph is an induced subgraph of a g-minimal graph. Recursive constructions of g-minimal graphs are described and bounds for the number of edges in these graphs are given. It is shown that the roots of the generating polynomials of the number of g-convex sets of each size of a g-minimal graphs are bounded, in contrast to their behaviour over all graphs. A set C of vertices of a graph is m-convex if for every pair \({u, v \in C}\) , the vertices of every induced uv path belong to C. A graph is m-minimal if it has no m-convex sets other than the empty set, the singletons, the edges and the entire vertex set. Sharp bounds on the number of edges in these graphs are given and graphs that are m-minimal are shown to be precisely the 2-connected, triangle-free graphs for which no pair of adjacent vertices forms a vertex cut-set.  相似文献

E. Schmeichel and D. Hayes showed that ifG is a 2-connected graph withd(u) +d(v)≥n ?1 for every pair of nonadjacent vertices andv, then G has a Hamiltonian cycle unlessG is the graph of Fig. 2 (b). In this paper, it is proved that, under almost the same conditions as Schmeichel and Hayes’s Theorem, namely,G is a 2-connected graph of ordern (n ≥ 40) with δ(G) ≥ 7 for every pair of nonadjacent vertices andv, G has two edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles unlessG is one of the graphs in Fig. 1 or Fig. 2, and this conclusion is best possible.  相似文献

A k-containerC(u,v) of G between u and v is a set of k internally disjoint paths between u and v. A k-container C(u,v) of G is a k*-container if the set of the vertices of all the paths in C(u,v) contains all the vertices of G. A graph G is k*-connected if there exists a k*-container between any two distinct vertices. Therefore, a graph is 1*-connected (respectively, 2*-connected) if and only if it is hamiltonian connected (respectively, hamiltonian). In this paper, a classical theorem of Ore, providing sufficient conditional for a graph to be hamiltonian (respectively, hamiltonian connected), is generalized to k*-connected graphs.  相似文献

An edge e of a k-connected graph G is said to be a removable edge if G?e is still k-connected. A k-connected graph G is said to be a quasi (k+1)-connected if G has no nontrivial k-separator. In this paper, we first investigate the relation between quasi connectivity and removable edges. Based on the relation, the existence of removable edges in k-connected graphs (k?5) is investigated. It is proved that a 5-connected graph has no removable edge if and only if it is isomorphic to K6. For a k-connected graph G such that end vertices of any edge of G have at most k-3 common adjacent vertices, it is also proved that G has a removable edge. Consequently, a recursive construction method of 5-connected graphs is established, that is, any 5-connected graph can be obtained from K6 by a number of θ+-operations. We conjecture that, if k is even, a k-connected graph G without removable edge is isomorphic to either Kk+1 or the graph Hk/2+1 obtained from Kk+2 by removing k/2+1 disjoint edges, and, if k is odd, G is isomorphic to Kk+1.  相似文献

We construct three new infinite families of hypohamiltonian graphs having respectively 3k+1 vertices (k?3), 3k vertices (k?5) and 5k vertices (k?4); in particular, we exhibit a hypohamiltonian graph of order 19 and a cubic hypohamiltonian graph of order 20, the existence of which was still in doubt. Using these families, we get a lower bound for the number of non-isomorphic hypohamiltonian graphs of order 3k and 5k. We also give an example of an infinite graph G having no two-way infinite hamiltonian path, but in which every vertex-deleted subgraph G - x has such a path.  相似文献

Suppose G is a graph of bounded degree d, and one needs to remove ?n of its edges in order to make it planar. We show that in this case the statistics of local neighborhoods around vertices of G is far from the statistics of local neighborhoods around vertices of any planar graph G. In fact, a similar result is proved for any minor-closed property of bounded degree graphs.The main motivation of the above result comes from theoretical computer-science. Using our main result we infer that for any minor-closed property P, there is a constant time algorithm for detecting if a graph is “far” from satisfying P. This, in particular, answers an open problem of Goldreich and Ron [STOC 1997] [20], who asked if such an algorithm exists when P is the graph property of being planar. The proof combines results from the theory of graph minors with results on convergent sequences of sparse graphs, which rely on martingale arguments.  相似文献

Let G be a (k+m)-connected graph and F be a linear forest in G such that |E(F)|=m and F has at most k-2 components of order 1, where k?2 and m?0. In this paper, we prove that if every independent set S of G with |S|=k+1 contains two vertices whose degree sum is at least d, then G has a cycle C of length at least min{d-m,|V(G)|} which contains all the vertices and edges of F.  相似文献

A shortest path connecting two vertices u and v is called a u-v geodesic. The distance between u and v in a graph G, denoted by dG(u,v), is the number of edges in a u-v geodesic. A graph G with n vertices is panconnected if, for each pair of vertices u,vV(G) and for each integer k with dG(u,v)?k?n-1, there is a path of length k in G that connects u and v. A graph G with n vertices is geodesic-pancyclic if, for each pair of vertices u,vV(G), every u-v geodesic lies on every cycle of length k satisfying max{2dG(u,v),3}?k?n. In this paper, we study sufficient conditions of geodesic-pancyclic graphs. In particular, we show that most of the known sufficient conditions of panconnected graphs can be applied to geodesic-pancyclic graphs.  相似文献

A graph G is said to be k-γ-critical if the size of any minimum dominating set of vertices is k, but if any edge is added to G the resulting graph can be dominated with k-1 vertices. The structure of k-γ-critical graphs remains far from completely understood when k?3.A graph G is factor-critical if G-v has a perfect matching for every vertex vV(G) and is bicritical if G-u-v has a perfect matching for every pair of distinct vertices u,vV(G). More generally, a graph is said to be k-factor-critical if G-S has a perfect matching for every set S of k vertices in G. In three previous papers [N. Ananchuen, M.D. Plummer, Some results related to the toughness of 3-domination-critical graphs, Discrete Math. 272 (2003) 5-15; N. Ananchuen, M.D. Plummer, Matching properties in domination critical graphs, Discrete Math. 277 (2004) 1-13; N. Ananchuen, M.D. Plummer, Some results related to the toughness of 3-domination-critical graphs. II. Utilitas Math. 70 (2006) 11-32], we explored the toughness of 3-γ-critical graphs and some of their matching properties. In particular, we obtained some properties which are sufficient for a 3-γ-critical graph to be factor-critical and, respectively, bicritical. In the present work, we obtain similar results for k-factor-critical graphs when k=3.  相似文献

Let G be a connected graph and SV(G). Then the Steiner distance of S, denoted by dG(S), is the smallest number of edges in a connected subgraph of G containing S. Such a subgraph is necessarily a tree called a Steiner tree for S. The Steiner interval for a set S of vertices in a graph, denoted by I(S) is the union of all vertices that belong to some Steiner tree for S. If S={u,v}, then I(S) is the interval I[u,v] between u and v. A connected graph G is 3-Steiner distance hereditary (3-SDH) if, for every connected induced subgraph H of order at least 3 and every set S of three vertices of H, dH(S)=dG(S). The eccentricity of a vertex v in a connected graph G is defined as e(v)=max{d(v,x)|xV(G)}. A vertex v in a graph G is a contour vertex if for every vertex u adjacent with v, e(u)?e(v). The closure of a set S of vertices, denoted by I[S], is defined to be the union of intervals between pairs of vertices of S taken over all pairs of vertices in S. A set of vertices of a graph G is a geodetic set if its closure is the vertex set of G. The smallest cardinality of a geodetic set of G is called the geodetic number of G and is denoted by g(G). A set S of vertices of a connected graph G is a Steiner geodetic set for G if I(S)=V(G). The smallest cardinality of a Steiner geodetic set of G is called the Steiner geodetic number of G and is denoted by sg(G). We show that the contour vertices of 3-SDH and HHD-free graphs are geodetic sets. For 3-SDH graphs we also show that g(G)?sg(G). An efficient algorithm for finding Steiner intervals in 3-SDH graphs is developed.  相似文献

A graph is 1-planar if it has a drawing in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once by another edge. Moreover, if this drawing has the additional property that for each crossing of two edges the end vertices of these edges induce a complete subgraph, then the graph is locally maximal 1-planar. For a 3-connected locally maximal 1-planar graph G, we show the existence of a spanning 3-connected planar subgraph and prove that G is Hamiltonian if G has at most three 3-vertex-cuts, and that G is traceable if G has at most four 3-vertex-cuts. The toughness indexτ(G) of a graph G is defined to be the largest integer t such that for any S ? V(G) with |S| > t, c(G - S) < |S| - t, where c(G - S) denotes the number of components of G - S. In particular, 1-tough graphs are exactly those graphs for which τ(G) ≥ 0. In this paper, it is shown that if G is a planar graph, then τ(G) ≥ 2 if and only if G is 4-connected. This result suggests that there may be a polynomial-time algorithm for determining whether a planar graph is 1-tough, even though the problem for general graphs is NP-hard. The result can be restated as follows: a planar graph is 4-connected if and only if it remains 1-tough whenever two vertices are removed. Hence it establishes a weakened version of a conjecture, due to M. D. Plummer, that removing 2 vertices from a 4-connected planar graph yields a Hamiltonian graph.  相似文献

Fiber-complemented graphs form a vast non-bipartite generalization of median graphs. Using a certain natural coloring of edges, induced by parallelism relation between prefibers of a fiber-complemented graph, we introduce the crossing graph of a fiber-complemented graph G as the graph whose vertices are colors, and two colors are adjacent if they cross on some induced 4-cycle in G. We show that a fiber-complemented graph is 2-connected if and only if its crossing graph is connected. We characterize those fiber-complemented graphs whose crossing graph is complete, and also those whose crossing graph is chordal.  相似文献

Let k be a positive integer and let G be a k-connected graph. An edge of G is called k-contractible if its contraction still results in a k-connected graph. A non-complete k-connected graph G is called contraction-critical if G has no k-contractible edge. Let G be a contraction-critical 5-connected graph, Su proved in [J. Su, Vertices of degree 5 in contraction-critical 5-connected graphs, J. Guangxi Normal Univ. 17 (3) (1997) 12-16 (in Chinese)] that each vertex of G is adjacent to at least two vertices of degree 5, and thus G has at least vertices of degree 5. In this paper, we further study the properties of contraction-critical 5-connected graph. In the process, we investigate the structure of the subgraph induced by the vertices of degree 5 of G. As a result, we prove that a contraction-critical 5-connected graph G has at least vertices of degree 5.  相似文献
