Single crystals of ytterbium tartrate trihydrate have been grown by gel method using silica and agar‐agar gels as media of growth. The medium of growth influences the morphology of grown crystals, silica gel yielding single and polycrystalline in the form of spherulites whereas agar‐agar gel leading to growth of single and twinned crystals. Materials grown as single crystals have been characterized by using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDAX, XRD, FT‐IR, CHN and thermogravimetric techniques. The stoichiometry of the grown single crystals is suggested to be Yb(C4H4O6) (C4H5O6).3H2O. The FT‐IR spectrum shows the presence of singly as well as doubly ionized tartrate ligands. Organic optical material 4‐Aminopyridinium‐4‐nitro phenolate (4AP4NP) has been synthesized, and single crystals of size 20 x 14 x 6 mm3 have been grown from acetone solvent at room temperature by solvent evaporation technique. The grown crystals have been characterized by X‐ray diffraction to determine the cell parameters, and by FT‐IR technique to confirm the formation of the expected compound. The crystal belongs to monoclinic crystal system with space group P21/a.The structural perfection of the grown crystals has been analyzed by high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction (HRXRD) rocking curve measurements. The thermal stability of the compound has been determined by TG‐DTA curves. The transmittance of 4AP4NP has been used to determine the refractive index n; the extinction coefficient K and both the real εr and imaginary εi components of the dielectric constant as functions of photon energy. L‐arginine hydrochloride monohydrate (LAHCl.H2O) has been synthesized and single crystals have been grown from its aqueous solution by slow evaporation and slow cooling methods. The solubility of the material was measured at various temperatures and bulk crystals of size 26×13×11 mm3 have been grown by optimizing the growth parameters. The grown crystals have been subjected to single crystal XRD studies to confirm the structure and to estimate the lattice parameters. FTIR analysis indicate the mode of vibrations of different molecular groups present in LAHCl and confirm the protonation of guanidyl, amino groups and deprotonation of COO groups. UV‐Vis transmission spectrum revealed the linear optical properties of the grown crystals with a transparency of 65% over the entire visible range upto 300 nm. Thermal behavior of the grown crystal was investigated from DTA and TGA measurements. Dielectric studies have been carried out on the grown crystals. Kurtz and Perry powder SHG technique confirms the NLO property of the grown crystal. The SHG efficiency of LAHCl was found to be 0.38 with respect to KDP. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. L‐histidinium acetate dihydrate {abbreviated as LHAc; [C6H10 N3O2+ C2H3O2 2H2O], a new nonlinear optical (NLO) material has been grown from aqueous solution. The grown crystals were subjected to X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and FT‐Raman analyses. Thermal studies have been carried out for its thermal stability. 4‐nitrophenol (4‐NP) single crystals have been grown by using slow evaporation and slow cooling techniques. A single crystal with size in the range of 7x3.4x1.8cm3 has been obtained by slow cooling method. The grown crystals have been subjected to various characterization studies. The powder XRD spectrum of 4‐NP reveals the good crystalline nature of the grown crystal. Single crystal XRD studies show that the crystal belongs to monoclinic system with cell parameters of a=6.09 Å, b=8.79 Å, c=11.61 Å, α=γ=90°, β=103.15°. The resultant FTIR spectrum confirms the various functional groups present in 4‐NP. Thermal analysis has been performed on the material to study the thermal stability of 4‐NP. The grown crystals belong to the category of soft materials as confirmed by Vickers Hardness tests. The optical transmiitance of 4‐NP single crystals has been measured from Vis‐IR spectroscopy study. The nonlinear optical properties have been analyzed by z‐scan technique and 4‐NP is found to be self defocusing because of its negative nonlinear refractive index. (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. L(+)Glutamic acid hydrochloride [HOOC (CH2)2CH(NH2) COOH·HCl], a monoamino dicarboxylic acid salt of L‐Glutamic acid was synthesized and the synthesis was confirmed by FTIR analysis. Solubility of the material in water was determined. Pure and Thiourea doped L‐Glutamic acid hydrochloride crystals were grown by low temperature solution growth using solvent evaporation technique. XRD, UV‐Vis‐NIR analyses were carried out for both pure and thiourea doped crystals. The crystals were qualitatively analyzed by EDAX analysis and the presence of thiourea was confirmed. The cell parameters of L‐Glutamic acid hydrochloride have been determined as a = 5.151 Å, b = 11.79 Å, c = 13.35 Å by X‐ray diffraction analysis and it crystallizes in orthorhombic space group P212121. UV‐Vis‐NIR spectra analysis showed good optical transmission in the entire visible region for both pure and doped crystals. Micro hardness of both pure and doped crystals has been determined using Vickers micro hardness tester. The SHG efficiencies of both pure and doped crystals were determined using Kurtz powder test and pure L‐Glutamic acid hydrochloride crystal was found to possess better efficiency than thiourea doped L‐Glutamic acid hydrochloride crystals. Growth of single crystals of the title compound Sr(C4H4O5).3H2O is achieved using the gel diffusion technique. Multifaceted single crystals of size up to 4x3x3 mm3 are obtained. X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern of the grown crystal and the Fourier Transform Infra‐Red (FTIR) spectrum in the range 400‐4000 cm‐1 are recorded. The vibrational bands corresponding to different functional groups are assigned. Thermal behavior of the material is investigated using Thermo Gravimetry (TG) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). Perfect single crystals of cadmium oxalate trihydrate have been grown using the slow and controlled reaction between Cd+2 and (C2O4)‐2 ions in agar‐agar gel, resulting in the formation of insoluble product Cd(COO)2.3H2O. The optimum growth parameters have been determined. The variation of magnetic moment of the grown crystals under an applied static magnetic field is studied and the material is found to be diamagnetic. The polarizability is found sensitive to optical band gap. An empirical relation between magnetic susceptibility and electronic polarizability has been established. Optical absorption spectra of the sample recorded in the range 200‐2500 nm reveal transitions involving absorption and emission of phonons. The detailed study supports the existence of allowed direct and indirect allowed gaps in the material. The direct allowed transition prevails in the region of relatively higher photon energy. Single crystals of L‐Prolinium tartrate (C5H10NO2)+ (C4H5O6), a new organic non‐linear optical material of size: 15 × 10 × 10 mm3 were grown using submerged seed solution growth method. Characterization of the crystals was made using single crystal X‐ray diffraction and density determination. Spectroscopic, thermal, optical and mechanical studies were carried out. These studies show that the crystals are thermally stable upto 161°C, transparent for the fundamental and second harmonic generation of Nd: YAG (λ = 1064 nm) laser and possess good mechanical strength. Second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency was investigated to explore the NLO characteristics of this material using Kurtz and Perry method and it was found that the SHG conversion efficiency is about 90% of that of the standard KDP crystals. L‐Valinium picrate (C5H12NO2)+. (C6H2N3O7), a non‐linear optical material from the amino acid family which has large second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency, was grown by slow evaporation method. Characterization of the crystals was made using single crystal X‐ray diffraction. The functional groups and the modes of vibrations were found by using the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency was investigated using the Kurtz and Perry method. The SHG conversion efficiency is 60 times higher than that of the standard KDP and 8 times higher than that of the standard Urea and the optical transparency was analyzed using UV‐visible‐NIR absorption spectrum. Trimethoprim malate, an organic crystal, has been synthesized using slow evaporation method from its aqueous solution. Structural, optical and the mechanical properties of the grown crystal have been investigated by various characterization techniques which include FTIR spectra, single crystal XRD, UV‐Vis spectra and Vickers microhardness testing. The structure of the compound predicted by analysing the recorded FTIR spectrum compliments the structure determined using single crystal X‐ray diffraction. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction study reveals that the crystals are monoclinic [P21/c, a=12.9850 Å, b=9.3038 Å, c=15.6815 Å and β=111.065°]. The UV‐Vis spectrum exhibits maximum transparency (98%) for a wide range suggesting the suitability of the title compound for optical applications. The optical constants have been calculated and illustrated graphically. Microhardness tests have been performed on the cystal under study and the Vicker hardness number has been calculated. KDP crystals were rapidly grown from solution doped with different Ba2+ concentrations. The effects of Ba2+ on the growth rate, morphology and quality of KDP crystals were discussed. Significant changes in shapes and volume of the grown crystals have been observed. During the growth process, defect region expands gradually with the increasing Ba2+ concentration. Samples were cut from different parts of the as‐grown crystals for investigating the optical quality, including transmission spectrum, scattering centers. Through comparison, it is found that the nonuniform distribution of Ba2+ ions causes remarkable difference in optical quality between prismatic and pyramidal sectors. A new second order non‐linear optical organic crystal Urea L‐threonine has been grown by aqueous solution slow cooling technique. The grown crystal is non hygroscopic and transparent in the visible region. The solubility of the grown crystal was found. The crystal structure and perfection were determined using powder XRD and High resolution XRD. The molecular structure was confirmed by 1H‐NMR spectrum. Thermal properties of the crystal have been studied using thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The dielectric response of the crystal with varying frequencies at different temperatures was studied. UV‐Visible spectrum was recorded to study the optical transparency of the grown crystals. The second order non linear optical property was examined by Kurtz powder technique and found that the second order susceptibilities is 1.2 KDP at wavelength 1064 nm. A novel nonlinear optical complex crystal with an organic ligand coordinated through an O atom: tetrathiocyanatocadmiummercury‐dimethyl sulfoxide, [CdHg(SCN)4(H6C2OS)2], (CMTD) is reported for the first time. Single crystals have been grown by temperature‐lowering method, the crystals tructure has been determined, and some physical properties are given. Spectroscopic ellipsometry in the infrared spectral range 250‐5000 cm‐1 is used for analysis of the dielectric response of Zn1‐x‐yBexMgySe and Zn1‐x‐yBexMnySe crystals grown by a high‐pressure Bridgman method. Ellipsometric spectra display features in the spectral range 390‐500 cm‐1 associated with BeSe‐type phonon modes. In the optical spectra of Zn1‐x‐yBexMgySe crystals both BeSe‐type and MgSe‐type lattice absorption bands are detected. The MgSe‐like modes are located at approximately 300 cm‐1. The complex dielectric functions can be reproduced using a model with two or three and one or two classical damped oscillators corresponding to the BeSe‐like and the MgSe‐like transverse‐optical phonon modes, respectively. The frequencies of longitudinal‐optical phonons have been derived from the dielectric loss functions. A red‐shift of the BeSe‐like phonons frequencies with a mean rate 0.42 cm‐1 (0.50 cm‐1) per mole percent of Mg (Mn) incorporated to the alloy has been found for examined concentration range x, y ≤ 0.25. A noticeable damping the intensities of BeSe‐type modes with increasing fraction of Mg and Mn dopant is observed in comparison to the strengths of BeSe‐type modes in Zn1‐xBexSe crystals. The habit of the organic non‐linear optical material meta‐nitroaniline (mNA) crystallized from different organic solvents such as acetone, benzene, ethyl acetate, n‐hexane, methanol and toluene were studied. Solubility of mNA in these solvents at various temperatures in the range between 288 and 323 K was determined by gravimetric method. Crystals were grown by restricted evaporation of solvents method. Solutions with different solvents having different chemical nature and polarity yielded crystals with different habits: one‐dimensional needles, two‐dimensional rhombic platelets and three‐dimensional octahedral. In addition, the mNA crystals show unidirectional growth behaviour along its polar [001] direction irrespective of the solvents used. All the grown crystals were found to be orthorhombic system with point group mm2 and space group Pbc21 which was confirmed by powder X‐ray diffraction study. Optical transmittance study showed that the grown mNA single crystals have optical transparency in the wavelength range between 430 and 1550 nm. Bis(isothiocyanato)‐bis(4‐methylpyridine)zinc(II)(Zn(SCN)2(C6H7N)2), (abbreviated as ZBNC) single crystals of optical quality have been grown from acetone solution by the slow temperature‐lowering method. Its solubilities at different temperatures in acetone were measured. The X‐ray powder diffraction (XRPD) spectroscopy of ZBNC crystal was performed at room temperature. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency was determined by powder technique of Kurtz and Perry using Nd:YAG laser, which is equivalent to KDP crystal. The thermal decomposition process was characterized by thermal gravity and differential thermal analysis (TG\DTA). The specific heat of the crystal is 1440.67 J/mol·K at 325 K. Crystals of 2‐aminopyridinium nitrato silver have been synthesized by slow evaporation method. Grown crystals have been subjected to FTIR, Single crystal X‐Ray diffraction and UV‐Visible studies in order to investigate the structural and optical properties of the crystal. The FTIR spectrum reveals the presence of the functional group that corresponds to both 2‐aminopyridine and silver nitrate, suggesting the formation of the compound, 2‐aminopyridinium nitrato silver. From XRD it is observed that the crystal crystallizes in the structure of monoclinic with the space group of P21/c. The optical transmittance spectrum shows the maximum transparency of about 95% in the visible region is in consistent with the wide band gap, estimated as 4.738 eV. The optical constants n and k has also been determined from the transmittance data. The static dielectric constant is found to be 0.851. A new semiorganic crystal, L‐glutamic acid hydrobromide, C5H10NO4Br (GHB) has been grown from aqueous solution. The single crystal X‐ray analysis of the crystal showed that it belongs to the non‐centrosymmetric P212121 space group with protonated glutamic acid as cation and bromine as anion. The back‐bone conformations of the amino acid are in cis and trans form. The side‐chain conformations are observed to be in gauche I / trans / cis / trans forms. The characteristic ‘head‐to‐tail’ hydrogen bonding interaction is observed through a chain C(5) motif. Further, the crystal structure is stabilized by an intricate three‐dimensional hydrogen bonding network. TGA/DTA showed that the grown crystals are thermally stable upto 219 °C without any phase transition. The functional groups responsible for the various modes of vibrations were identified by using FTIR spectroscopy. UV‐Vis‐NIR spectra showed that the crystals have excellent transparency in the visible and infrared regions. The liquidus surface structure and field of LiB3O5 (LBO) primary crystallization have been revealed in Li2O‐B2O3 ‐MoO3 ternary system. The optimization of charge composition and growth conditions results in large volume optical quality LBO single crystals yielding. Crystallographic properties and real defect structure of grown LBO single crystals have been investigated by X‐ray powder diffraction method and X‐ray reflection topography. The volume of the crystals is partly free of any structural imperfections.  相似文献
