Full ordering in the Shorrocks mobility sense of the semiring of monotone doubly stochastic matrices

In this paper, we investigate the ordering on a semiring of monotone doubly stochastic transition matrices in Shorrocks’ sense. We identify a class of an equilibrium index of mobility that induces the full ordering in a semiring, while this ordering is compatible with Dardanoni’s partial ordering on a set of monotone primitive irreducible doubly stochastic matrices.

Topological properties of orthostochastic matrices

The set of n×n orthostochastic matrices with the topology induced by the Euclidean matric is shown to be compact and path-connected. For n<3, the set of orthostochastic matrices is identical to the set of doubly stochastic matrices. In this paper, it is shown that for n3 the orthostochastic matrices are not everywhere dense in the set of doubly stochastic matrices, thus answering a question of L. Mirsky in his survey article on doubly stochastic matrices [2].     

Minimum permanents of doubly stochastic matrices with at least one zero entry

It is shown that the minimum value of the permanent on the n× ndoubly stochastic matrices which contain at least one zero entry is achieved at those matrices nearest to J_nin Euclidean norm, where J_nis the n× nmatrix each of whose entries is n^-1. In case n ≠ 3 the minimum permanent is achieved only at those matrices nearest J_n; for n= 3 it is achieved at other matrices containing one or more zero entries as well.

Commuting pairs and triples of matrices and related varieties

In this note, we show that the set of all commuting d-tuples of commuting n×n matrices that are contained in an n-dimensional commutative algebra is a closed set, and therefore, Gerstenhaber's theorem on commuting pairs of matrices is a consequence of the irreduciblity of the variety of commuting pairs. We show that the variety of commuting triples of 4×4 matrices is irreducible. We also study the variety of n-dimensional commutative subalgebras of M_n(F), and show that it is irreducible of dimension n²−n for n4, but reducible, of dimension greater than n²−n for n7.

A characterization of linear transformations which leave the doubly stochastic matrices

A characterization of linear transformations which leave the n×n doubly stochastic matrices invariant is given as a linear combination of functions of the type T(X)=AXB with certain restrictions posed on the n×n matrices A and B.     

A note on commuting pairs of matrices

We give a short proof of the Motzkin-Taussky result that the variety of commuting pairs of matrices is irreducible. An easy consequence of this is that any two generated commutative subalgebra of n×n matrices has dimension at most n. We also answer an old question of Gerstenhaber by showing that the set of commuting triples of n×n matrices is not irreducible for n≥32.     

Minimum Permanents on a Face of the Polytope of Doubly Stochastic Matrices II

We determine the minimum permanents and minimizing matrices on the face of z_3+n, for the fully indecomposable (0,1) matrices of order 3+n, which include an identity submatrix of order n .     

Between d-stability and sign-stability: the 3 × 3 case

[2] introduced a decreasing sequence of sets of real n × n matrices, which begins with the D-stable matrices and stops at the sign-stable matrices. It is not clear how many of the n sets in the sequence are distinct. This article documents the disappointment that in the first case where the sequence could contain a set which is neither the D-stable matrices nor the sign-stable matrices(viz., the case n = 3) it doesn't.     

Partial orderings of matrices referring to singular values or eigenvalues

A new partial ordering in the set of complex matrices is defined, which is weaker than the star ordering introduced by Drazin in 1978 and stronger than the minus ordering introduced by Hartwig in 1980. This ordering refers to singular values of matrices, and the interest in it was generated by canonical interpretations of the minus and star orderings, given by Hartwig and Styan in 1986. For Hermitian matrices, a similar ordering referring to eigenvalues is also considered, and its connection with a problem concerning distributions of quadratic forms in normal variables is pointed out.

Intervals of Totally Nonnegative and Related Matrices

We consider the class of the totally nonnegative matrices, i.e., the matrices having all their minors nonnegative, and intervals of matrices with respect to the chequerboard partial ordering, which results from the usual entrywise partial ordering if we reverse the inequality sign in all components having odd index sum. For these intervals we study the following conjecture: If the left and right endpoints of an interval are nonsingular and totally nonnegative then all matrices taken from the interval are nonsingular and totally nonnegative. We present a new class of the totally nonnegative matrices for which this conjecture holds true. Similar results for classes of related matrices are also given.     

Poincaré series of semi-invariants of 2×2 matrices

The Poincaré series of the algebra of -invariants of m-tuples of 2×2 matrices is presented both as a rational function and as a series of Schur functions. We show that this algebra of invariants is generated by the determinants, the mixed discriminants and the discriminants of 2×2 matrices. Consequences on invariants of three-dimensional matrices of the shape 2×2×m are discussed. For arbitrary n2, we prove an explicit functional equation for the Poincaré series of the -invariants of m-tuples of n×n matrices.     

Nonconvexity of the permanent

Counterexamples are given which show that for n≥4 the permanent is not convex on the n by n correlation matrices.     

Note on a paper of thompson: the congruence numerical range

Given n×n Complex matrices A, Cdefine the C-congruence numerical range of A to be the set [ILM0001]. R.C. Thompson has characterized R_C(A) when [ILM0002] are fixed complex numbers. In this note. we obtain some analogous results about R_t(A) when C is skew symmmetric and a simple proof of the result of Thompson is given.Moreover, we characterize a certain set of partial off diagonals under congruence unitary transformation.     

Linear transformations on symmetric matrices II

Let Tbe a linear mapping on the space of n× nsymmetric matrices over a field Fof characteristic not equal to two. We obtain the structure of Tfor the following cases:(i) Tpreserves matrices of rank less than three; (ii) Tpreserves nonzero matrices of rank less than K + 1 where Kis a fixed positive integer less than nand Fis algebraically closed; (iii) Tpreserves rank Kmatrices where Kis a fixed odd integer and Fis algebraically closed.
