The performance of a cooled Be compound refractive lens (CRL) has been tested at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) to enable vertical focusing of the pink beam and permit the X‐ray beam to spatially overlap with an 80 µm‐high low‐density plasma that simulates astrophysical environments. Focusing the fundamental harmonics of an insertion device white beam increases the APS power density; here, a power density as high as 500 W mm?2 was calculated. A CRL is chromatic so it does not efficiently focus X‐rays whose energies are above the fundamental. Only the fundamental of the undulator focuses at the experiment. A two‐chopper system reduces the power density on the imaging system and lens by four orders of magnitude, enabling imaging of the focal plane without any X‐ray filter. A method to measure such high power density as well as the performance of the lens in focusing the pink beam is reported.  相似文献

A numerical simulation is made of the processes occurring in a plasma lens under conditions when the focusing of a relativistic electron beam is strongly affected by the ionization of the residual gas in the lens region by the beam itself. The paraxial, azimuthally symmetric, 1.5-dimensional, electrostatic kinetic model, taking account of plasma production, expansion of the plasma electrons away from the beam region, and contraction of the ions toward the axis of the beam, was used for the calculation. The dynamics of the formation of a focal spot is studied, and the size and position of the spot are determined as functions of time for different values of the gas pressure, initial plasma density, and energy of the beam electrons. The process of space current neutralization of intense relativistic electron beam under an externally applied magnetic guide field is discussed in this paper. Ionization by electron avalanching and by beam electrons impact and recombination is included in the calculation of plasma density buildup, with plasma heating by return current and two- stream instability taken into account. A code to evaluate the process of space current neutralization was set up. The calculations demonstrate that the optimum gas pressure increases as peak beam current increases and it decreases as the risetime of beam pulse increases.  相似文献

In this article, we report the generation of terahertz (THz) radiation using the interaction of a laser‐modulated relativistic electron beam (REB) with a surface plasma wave. Two laser beams propagating through the modulator interact with the REB, leading to velocity modulation of the beam. This results in pre‐bunching of the REB. The pre‐bunched beam travels through the drift space, where the velocity modulation translates into density modulation. The density‐modulated beam, on interacting with the surface plasma pump wave, acquires an oscillatory velocity that couples with the modulated beam density to give rise to a nonlinear current density which acts as an antenna to give THz radiation. By optimizing the parameters of the beam and the wiggler, we obtain power of the order of 10−4 using the current scheme.  相似文献

We describe experiments demonstrating the formation of a high current electron beam from a vacuum arc plasma. A preexisting vacuum arc ion source was used, with the extraction voltage reversed in polarity so as to form an electron beam rather than an ion beam; no other changes were required. The beam formed was of energy up to 33 keV, beam current up to 70 A, beam diameter about 10 cm, pulse width 500 μs, and energy density up to 25 J/cm2. We report the generation of high-current-density (20 A/cm2) pulsed electron beams from high-voltage (48-100 kV) glow discharges using cathodes 7.5 cm in diameter. The pulse duration was determined by the energy of the pulse generator and varied between 0.2 ?s and several microseconds, depending on the discharge current. The largest electron beam current (900 A) was obtained with an oxidized aluminum cathode in a helium-oxygen atmosphere. An oxidized magnesium cathode produced similar results, and a molybdenum cathode operated at considerably lower currents. A small-diameter (<1 mm) well-collimated beam of energetic electrons of very high current density (>1 kA/cm2) was also observed to develop in the center of the discharge. Electrostatic probe measurements show that the negative glow plasma density and the electron beam current have a similar spatial distribution. Electron temperatures of 1-1.5 eV were measured at 7 cm from the cathode. The plasma density (8.5 · 1011 cm-3 at 450 A) was found to depend linearly on the discharge current. In discharges at high currents a denser and higher temperature plasma region was observed to develop at approximately 20 cm from the cathode. We have modeled the process of electron beam generation and predicted the energy distribution of the electron beam. More than 95 percent of the electron beam energy is calculated to be within 10 percent of that corresponding to the discharge voltage.  相似文献

The results of a study of the plasma density distribution in the slit aperture of a right-angled extended hollow cathode used in a ribbon-electron-beam plasma source operating at forevacuum pressures (1–10 Pa) are presented. It is shown that a local peak of plasma density appears in some region of the slit aperture as the slit width is decreased. This results in the appearance of a region of increased current density when the ribbon beam forms. The uniformity of the beam current density distribution is additionally disturbed by the reverse ion flow whose effect on the emission properties of the plasma is significant in the region of elevated pressure. Results are presented from theoretical studies and computer simulations of the resonant excitation of Langmuir waves during the ionization of a homogeneous gas by high-intensity laser radiation. Two mechanisms for the formation of nonuniform resonant structures in the discharge are examined: plasma-resonance ionization instability, resulting in the density modulation along the electric field vector, and gas breakdown in the field of a transversely inhomogeneous laser beam (a Bessel beam produced by an axicon lens). In both cases, the transition of the plasma density through the critical value is accompanied by the generation of intense Langmuir waves, the formation of fast ionization fronts, and the appearance of long-lived quasi-turbulent states.  相似文献

The generation of a 250-μs-wide electron beam in a plasma-emitter diode is studied experimentally. A plasma was produced by a pulsed arc discharge in hydrogen. The electron beam is extracted from a circular emission hole 3.8 mm in diameter under open plasma boundary conditions. The beam accelerated in the diode gap enters into a drift space in the absence of an external magnetic field through a hole 4.1 mm in diameter made in the anode. The influence of electron current deposition at the edge of the anode hole on the beam’s maximum attainable current, above which the diode gap breaks down, is studied for different accelerating voltages and diode gaps. The role of processes occurring on the surface of the electrodes is shown. For an accelerating voltage of 32 kV, a mean emission current density of 130 A/cm2 is achieved. The respective mean strength of the electric field in the acceleration gap is 140 kV/cm. Using the POISSON-2 software package, the numerical simulation of the diode performance is carried out and the shape of steady plasma emission boundaries in the cathode and anode holes is calculated. The influence of the density of the ion current from the anode plasma surface on the maximum attainable current of the electron beam is demonstrated.  相似文献

A highly relativistic electron beam produced by a 50 TW laser-plasma accelerator has been characterized by photonuclear techniques. The beam has large divergence that increases with plasma density. The electron yield also increases with plasma density and reaches up to 4x10(11) electrons ( >10 MeV), with beam current approaching the Alfvén limit. Effective electron temperatures exceeding 8 MeV are found, leading to an order of magnitude higher photonuclear activation yield than in solid target experiments with the same laser system.  相似文献

The plasma parameters and the emissivity of a ribbon electron beam source based on a discharge with an inhomogeneous extended hollow cathode are measured. A constriction in the cathode cavity increases the plasma density near the emitting area boundary, which adds to the electron current density in the beam. The reason for the above effect is the formation of the plasma density distribution nonuniform across the cavity with a maximum in the middle. This maximum is caused primarily by a plasma electron flow from the constriction, which is generated by the electric field and is directed toward a slit emission-extracting aperture.  相似文献

A one-dimensional ionization and heating model is applied to results of several electron-beam-plasma interaction experiments. Beam energy is deposited resistively in the plasma at a rate ?j2, where j is the return current density and ? the plasma resistivity both classical and anomalous due to ion acoustic or e-e-mode turbulence. Principal energy losses include ionization, line radiation, inelastic electron impact excitation, bremsstrahlung and radiative recombination. The level of ionization and plasma heating are computed as a function of neutral gas pressure, beam rise time, pulsewidth and current density, and resistivity model. Plasma dynamics and kinetic effects such as expansion and end loss are not explicitly included in the model.  相似文献

Generation and transport of high-current electron beams are investigated in gas-filled diodes with plasma emitters based on arc and glow discharges. A space-charge neutralized beam with a current up to 1 kA was produced in a diode with a plasma emitter based on an arc discharge for an accelerating voltage of 15 kV. The beam is constricted from 8 cm down to 1 cm in diameter by a self-magnetic field and is transported through a distance of over 20 cm with an efficiency of 70%. A beam with a current of 80 A and a current density up to 100 A/cm2 was produced in a glow-discharge diode. The beam was transported through a distance of 30 cm in a weak axial magnetic field with induction B = 0.015 T.  相似文献

A kinetic approach is applied to derive the transport equations, the virial equation, the dynamic-equilibrium equation, and the envelope equation for an axially symmetric paraxial relativistic electron beam propagating through a scattering gas-plasma medium in the presence of a reverse plasma current with a radial density profile that is generally different from the beam density profile. 由衍射光学元件(DOE)和折射透镜组成的衍折射光学元件,用于较大功率密度和光束半径的高斯光束的聚焦。运用GS算法,用外围的DOE产生一个偏移的高斯光束分布,与中心的折射透镜会聚后的高斯光束相干叠加在一个很小的聚焦圆内,在聚焦圆内的光强分布不平整度小于5%。给出了一个圆域基模高斯光束的整形分布,计算误差小于3.5%。  相似文献
