Backscattering of light ions from the surfaces of inhomogeneous multicomponent amorphous materials

An analytic theory proposed in Ref. 1 [V. S. Sukhomlinov and é. N. Fafurina, Zh. Tekh. Fiz 65(4), 9 (1995); Tech. Phys. 40, 295 (1995)] for the backscattering of light ions by a solid surface is developed for the cases of multicomponent materials and materials in which the concentrations of some of its components vary with depth. Possibility of the levitation of droplets in the atmosphere when they are charged by induction in an electric field under nonuniform evaporation conditions

The behavior of droplets in the atmosphere in an electric field has important bearing on the theory of thunderstorms. One of the possible mechanisms by which droplets become charged—the induction mechanism in the presence of nonuniform evaporation—is investigated in greater detail on the basis of recent experimental results (V. Calculation of the force characteristics of a multi-coil suspension of a superconducting sphere

The theory presented in the accompanying paper [Ref. 1: Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 67(1), 3 (1997); Tech. Phys. 42, 1 (1997)] for the calculation of the magnetic field and the force characteristics of an electromagnetic suspension for a superconducting body is used to carry out specific calculations of the force characteristics of a multi-coil suspension of a superconducting sphere. Formulas are obtained for the dependence of the force and the stiffness, from which it is possible to approach the problem of the stable suspension of a superconducting sphere in the field of a system of circular currents. The problem of determining the magnetic field at the sphere is analyzed and the conditions are found for which it is less than the critical field. Zh. Tekh. Fiz. 67, 10–16 (January 1997)     

Shaping of the electron distribution function in a striated solution

Numerous papers have been devoted to the investigation of striations in inert gases at low pressures (p⩽2 Torr) and small currents (i<100 mA) [A. V. Nedospasov, Sov. Phys. Usp. 11, 174 (1968); L. Pekarek, Sov. Phys. Usp. 11, 188 (1968); N. L. Oleson and A. W. Cooper, Adv. Electron. Electron Phys. 24, 155 (1968); P. S. Landa, N. A. Miskinova, and Yu. V. Ponomarev, Sov. Phys. Usp. 23, 813 (1980)]. Since the nature of striations is determined under these conditions by the nonlocal kinetics of the electrons in spatially periodic fields [L. D. Tsendin, Sov. J. Plasma Phys. 8, 228 (1982)], an investigation of the electron distribution function in space and time would be very interesting. The purpose of the present work is to experimentally investigate the potential profiles and distribution functions in S and P striations and to analyze the mechanism which shapes the distribution functions for striations of these types. Effect of magnetic field pulses on the anelastic properties of nitrogen-containing steel

The effect of weak magnetic field pulses on the dynamic properties of dislocations interacting with impurity-defect complexes is determined by the internal-friction method. Main parameters of a coaxial electrostatic lens

Coaxial electrostatic lenses are used in combination with a magnetic field in plasma-optical and manometric devices [A. I. Morozov and S. V. Lebedev, in Reviews of Plasma Physics, Vol. 8, M. A. Leontovich (ed.), Consultants Bureau, New York (1980); V. P. Afanas’ev, A. A. Vydrik, L. P. Ovsyannikova, and E. V. Shpak, Sov. Phys. Tech. Phys. 25, 1049 (1980)]. Their employment in systems for transporting beams of high-energy charged particles is also known [P. Krejcik, B. V. King, and I. C. Kelly, Optik (Stuttgart) 55, 385 (1980)], since, along with quadrupole lenses, they have a large optical strength. Expressions for the trajectories of charged low-energy particles were obtained by L. P. Ovsyannikova and S. V. Pasovets [Sov. Phys. Tech. Phys. 32, 1422 (1987)] in the approximation of a rectangular field model with consideration of the variation of the energy at the entrance and exit from the field. Taking aberrations into account in experiments testing the relativistic theory of the Doppler effect

The interpretation of experimental results [L. A. Pobedonostsev, Sov. Phys. Tech. Phys. 34, 303 (1989)] on a test of the relativistic formula for the Doppler effect and the mistaken conclusion drawn by one author of the experiment that the special theory of relativity (STR) is unsound [L. A. Pobedonostsev, Galilean Electrodyn. 6(6), 117 (1995)] are criticized. It is suggested that the construction of the slit collimator be altered so as to take into account the aberration of light. Spatial orientation of molecules by a heat flux

An effect of spatial orientation of molecules by a heat flux is predicted.
