A previously proposed method based on soap-free emulsion polymerization with an amphoteric initiator for producing micrometer-sized polystyrene particles was extended to application with methyl methacrylate (MMA). The aggregation and dispersion stability of polymer particles, which have ionizable groups arising from initiator radicals, can be controlled by adjusting the pH of the reaction system accompanied with the addition of ionic monomer. Polymerizations were carried out with 2,2'-azobis[N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-methylpropionamidine] tetrahydrate amphoteric initiator, NH(3)/NH(4)Cl pH buffer, and sodium p-styrenesulfonate anionic monomer (NaSS) in ranges of MMA concentration (0.58-2.32 kmol/m(3) H(2)O) and NH(3) concentration (2.5-20 mol/m(3) H(2)O) at fixed concentrations of 5 mol/m(3) H(2)O initiator, 10 mol/m(3) H(2)O NH(4)Cl, and 1 mol/m(3) H(2)O NaSS at 65 degrees C. The addition of NaSS during the polymerization could improve stability in dispersion of particles, which coagulated in the absence of NaSS after the disappearance of monomer drops. An increase in the monomer concentration in the present method could enlarge the particle size without lowering the monodispersity of the particle size distribution. On the other hand, an increase in NH(3) concentration decreased the particle size. The highest monodispersity of particle sizes was obtained at a NH(3) concentration of 5 mol/m(3) H(2)O, which gave an average size of 1.5 microm and a coefficient of variation of particle size distribution of 2.2% that was much smaller than the standard criterion for monodispersity, 10%.  相似文献

A previously proposed method was examined for producing monodisperse, submicrometer-sized magnetic polymer particles. The method applies soap-free emulsion polymerization during which Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles are heterocoagulated onto precipitated polymer nuclei. To chemically fix the magnetic particles to the polymer nuclei, vinyl groups were introduced on the Fe3O4 particles in a preliminary surface modification reaction with methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, and methacryloxypropyldimethoxysilane (MPDMS) was added to reaction systems of the soap-free emulsion polymerization. The colloidal dispersion stability of magnetic polymer particles was improved by the addition of an ionic monomer, sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS), during the polymerization. The polymerizations were carried out with styrene monomer and potassium persulfate initiator in ranges of NaSS concentrations (0-2.4 x 10(-3) M), NaSS addition times (60-80 min), and monomer concentrations (0.3-0.6 M) at fixed concentrations of 1.6 x 10(-2) M initiator and 1.3 x 10(-2) M MPDMS for pH 4.5 adjusted with a buffer system of [CH3COOH]/[NaOH]. The addition of NaSS during the polymerization could maintain the dispersion stability of magnetic polymer particles during the polymerization. Selection of the reaction conditions enabled the preparation of colloidally stable, submicrometer-sized magnetic polymer particles that had coefficients of variation of distribution smaller than the standard criterion for monodispersity, 10%.  相似文献

Single-stage polymerization recently proposed for producing micron-sized polymer particles in aqueous media by Gu, Inukai and Konno (2002) was carried out under the control of agitation with styrene monomer, an amphoteric initiator, 2,2′-azobis [N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-methylpropionamidine] tetrahydrate and a pH buffer NH3/NH4Cl at a monomer concentration of 1.1 kmol/m3 H2O, an initiator concentration of 10 mol/m3 H2O and a buffer concentration of [NH3] = [NH4Cl] = 10 mol/m3 H2O. In the polymerizations, impeller speed was ranged from 300 to 500 rpm to satisfy complete dispersion of the monomer phase and not to introduce the gas phase from the free surface. Polymerization experiments under steady agitation indicated that impeller speed was an important factor for size distribution of polymer particles. An increase in impeller speed promoted particle coagulation during the polymerization to enlarge the average size of polymer particles but widen the size distribution. To produce polymer particles with narrow size distribution, stepwise reduction in impeller speed was examined in the polymerization experiments. It was demonstrated that this method was more effective than the steady agitation. The impeller speed reduction could produce highly monodisperse particles with an average size of 2 μm and a coefficient of variation of size distributions of 2.2% that was much smaller than typical monodispersity criterion of 10%.  相似文献

A method applying soap-free emulsion polymerization with an amphoteric initiator, 2,2′-azobis[N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-2-methyl-propionamidine], is proposed for synthesis of highly monodisperse particles composed of magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4/γ–Fe2O3) and polystyrene. The magnetic nanoparticles were pretreated by surface modification for introducing double bonds onto the particles. In the polymerization, magnetic nanoparticles were continuously supplied to the system for a certain period after the initiation of polymerization at various pH. Dissociation degrees of ionizable groups in the initiator molecules were controlled through pH by changing NH3 concentrations at a constant NH4Cl concentration. Selection of suitable pH in the polymerization could produce polymer particles that perfectly incorporated the supplied magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetic polymer particles had a coefficient of variation of size distribution as low as 4.3% with an average diameter of 515 nm and a saturation magnetization of 7.3 emu/g-sample. Electrophoresis measurements indicated that the magnetic polymer particles had an isoelectric point of pH 4.1.  相似文献

A previously proposed method of soap-free emulsion polymerization employing an amphoteric initiator, 2,2'-azobis [N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-methylpropionamidine] tetrahydrate (VA-057), was extended to synthesize micrometer-sized polystyrene particles with low polydispersity in an acidic region of pH from 3.3 to 4.6. A buffer system of CH3COOH/CH3COONa was used for the adjustment of pH, which was aimed at effective promotion of particle coagulation in early stage of the polymerization. In these experiments, CH3COOH concentration was varied from 20 to 360 mM at a CH3COONa concentration of 10 mM. Polymer particles with an average size of 1.8 microm and low polydispersity were obtained at the CH3COOH concentration of 40 mM for the concentrations of 1.1 M styrene monomer and 10 mM initiator. To more precisely control dispersion stability of particles, experiments in which pH was stepwisely changed during the polymerization were also carried out. This polymerization method could enhance the average size of particles to 2.2 microm while retaining the monodispersity of particles. Furthermore, combination of pH stepwise change and monomer addition during the polymerization could produce particles with an average size of 3.0 microm and low polydispersity.  相似文献

An amphoteric initiator of 2,2′-azobis[N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-2-methylpropionamidine] (VA-057) was applied to fabrication of raspberry-shaped composite particles in soap-free emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of silica particles surface-modified with 3-methacryoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. In the polymerizations, pH of the solution was ranged from 7.9 to 9.9 to alter dissociation degree of ionizable groups in the initiator. Raspberry-shaped particles were obtained in a pH range of 8.0 to 9.3 followed by a tendency in which average size of polystyrene (PSt) nodules adsorbed onto the silica particles decreased with pH. This tendency was similar to that of polymer particles formed in conventional soap-free emulsion polymerization in the absence of the silica particles. An increase in silica particle concentration led to a decrease in the final size in PSt nodules. The decrease was caused by the stabilization of polymer particles fixed to the silica surface against polymer particle aggregation in water phase.  相似文献

Highly monodisperse particles composed of a magnetic silica core and fluorescent polymer shell were synthesized with a combined technique of heterocoagulation and soap-free emulsion polymerization. Prior to heterocoagulation, monodisperse, submicrometer-sized silica particles were prepared with the Stober method, and magnetic nanoparticles were prepared with a modified Massart method in which a cationic silane coupling agent of N-trimethoxysilylpropyl- N, N, N-trimethylammonium chloride was added just after coprecipitation of Fe (2+) and Fe (3+). The silica particles with negative surface potential were heterocoagulated with the magnetic nanoparticles with positive surface potential. The magnetic silica particles obtained with the heterocoagulation were treated with sodium silicate to modify their surfaces with silica. In the formation of a fluorescent polymer shell onto the silica-coated magnetic silica cores, an amphoteric initiator of 2,2'-azobis[ N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-2-methylpropionamidine] (VA-057) was used to control the colloidal stability of the magnetic cores during the polymer coating. The polymerization of St in the presence of a hydrophobic fluorophore of pyrene could coat the cores with fluorescent polymer shells, resulting in monodisperse particles with a magnetic silica core and fluorescent polymer shell. Measurements of zeta potential for the composite particles in different pH values indicated that the composite particles had an amphoteric property originating from VA-057 initiator.  相似文献

Silica/poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposite latex particles have been synthesized by emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate using a nonionic surfactant: nonylphenol poly(oxyethylene) and three different initiators, namely: 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AIBA), potassium persulfate (KPS) and azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN), being cationic, anionic and nonionic, respectively. A silica sol with an average diameter of 68 nm was used as the seed. The polymerization reaction was conducted under alkaline conditions in order to evaluate the role of the surface charge of the hydrophilic silica on the coating reaction. AIBA was found to be adsorbed on the silica surface owing to electrostatic interactions of the amidine function of the cationic initiator with the silanolate groups of the oxide surface, while the anionic and the nonionic initiators did not adsorb on silica under the same conditions. Nonetheless, whatever the nature of the initiator, polymerization took place on the silica particles as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy. The extent of interaction between the inorganic surface and the polymer particles was quantified by means of ultracentrifugation and a material balance. As much as 65% by weight of the total polymer formed was found to be present at the silica surface using AIBA, while only 40% for KPS and 25% for AIBN was found to cover the silica particles under alkaline conditions. We demonstrate that by using a cationic initiator and by controlling the pH of the suspension it is possible to significantly decrease the amount of free polymer. Coating of the silica particles took place through a kind of in situ heterocoagulation mechanism. Received: 8 December 2000 Accepted: 22 February 2001  相似文献

Emulsifier-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene (St) and acrylamide (AAm) has been investigated in the presence of an amphoteric water-soluble initiator, 2,2′-azobis[N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-2-methylpropionamidine]hydrate (VA057). The kinetics of polymerization and the colloidal properties of the resulting latices were studied and compared with the cases using ionic initiators. When adopting the amphoteric initiator at pHs lower than 10, stable amphoteric poly (St/AAm) latices, evidenced by the electrophoretic mobility, were prepared directly. Meanwhile, almost the same conversion versus time curves appeared and there were no apparent differences in the final particle sizes for those polymerizations, whereas in the polymerization at pH 10, a much lower rate of copolymerization and a larger size of particles were observed. The surface charge density and the growth rate of latex particles produced with VA057 at pH<10 were comparable to those of the particles with a cationic initiator, 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride, but were apparently lower than those with an anionic initiator, potassium persulfate, when the polymerizations were carried out under corresponding conditions. The number of initiator fragments incorporated onto the particle surfaces was independent of polymerization pH, except for pH 10. The abnormal performance of VA057 at pH 10 was attributed to its degradation due to hydrolysis. Received: 14 December 1999 Accepted: 22 February 2000  相似文献

Sub-micron sized polystyrene particles containing magnetite more than 30 wt.% were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization with commercially available ferricolloid. The effects of some water-soluble initiators and/or oil-soluble initiators on the particles characteristics, such as the size, morphology, magnetic properties and colloidal stability, were studied. The size of monomer droplets/polymer particles increased from 60 to 300 nm during polymerization, keeping magnetic in core when potassium persulfate (KPS) or ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as the sole initiator. These particles were easily separated from the medium within short time scale in external magnetic field, while such characteristics were controlled by the amount of persulfate used for the polymerization. In contrast, when 2,2′-azobis isobutyronitrile (AIBN) was used as the initiator, the size of droplets/particles was retained to be 90 nm at the most and magnetite nanoparticles located at the surface of polystyrene particles, which were so colloidally stable that they were not separated in external magnetic field. The above-mentioned effect of initiators on particle size in persulfate system was likely originated from the decrease of pH value and the increase of ionic strength, which induced the fusion of droplets/particles containing magnetite. Mixed-initiators system resulted in intermediate characteristics, compared with each initiator system. The location of magnetite in the particle seems to depend on where initiation/polymerization occurred in each initiator system.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) particles were prepared via Pickering emulsion polymerization using graphene oxide (GO) as the stabilizer. The results show that pH is an important factor in the stability of Pickering emulsions. The effects of two different phase initiators, the water phase initiator potassium persulfate and the oil phase initiator azobisisobutyronitrile, on the morphology of PS particles in Pickering emulsion polymerization had been investigated in detail. Wrinkled particles were prepared using the water phase initiator, and spherical particles were prepared using the oil phase initiator. In addition, hexadecane was used as the auxiliary stabilizer in the polymerization, which narrowed the diameter distribution of the PS spheres, and the hollow PS spheres were fabricated. The size of the GO particles also influenced the final morphology of the particles. Nano-sized polymer particles were grafted onto the surface of micro-sized GO. Small GO particles were suitable for Pickering emulsion polymerization to prepare the composite particles. The thermogravimetric analysis of the prepared particles confirmed that they were PS/GO composite particles, which could have a wide range of potential applications, such as in catalysts, sensors, environmental remediation, and energy storage.  相似文献

The star-shaped poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (HPs-Star-PCL-b-PDMAEMA) was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Star-shaped polycaprolactones (HPs-Star-PCL) were synthesized by the bulk polymerization of ε-caprolactone (CL) with a hyperbranched polyester initiator and tin 2-ethylhexanoate as a catalyst. The number-average molecular weight of these polymers linearly increased with the increase of the molar ratio of CL to hyperbranched initiator. HPs-Star-PCL was converted into a HPs-star-PCL-RAFT by an esterification of HPs-Star-PCL and 4-cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate. Star amphiphilic block copolymer HPs-Star-PCL-b-PDMAEMA was obtained via RAFT polymerization of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The molecular weight distribution of HPs-Star-PCL-b-PDMAEMA was narrow. Furthermore, the micellar properties of HPs-Star-PCL-b-PDMAEMA in water were studied at various temperatures and pH values by means of dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results indicated that the star copolymers had the pH- and temperature-responsive properties. The release behaviors of model drug aspirin from the star polymer indicated that the rate of drug release could be effectively controlled by pH value and temperature.  相似文献

Following a previous work (J. L. Luna-Xavier et al., Colloid Polym. Sci.279, 947 (2001)), silica-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposite latex particles have been synthesized in emulsion polymerization using a cationic initiator, 2,2'-azobis (isobutyramidine) dihydrochloride (AIBA), and a nonionic polyoxyethylenic surfactant (NP30). Silica beads with diameters of 68, 230, and 340 nm, respectively, were used as the seed. Coating of the silica particles with PMMA was taking place in situ during polymerization, resulting in the formation of colloidal nanocomposites with a raspberry-like or a core-shell morphology, depending on the size and nature of the silica beads. The amount of surface polymer was quantified by means of ultracentrifugation and thermogravimetric analysis as extensively described in the first article of the series (see above reference). The influence of some determinant parameters such as the pH of the suspension, the initiator, silica, monomer, or surfactant concentration on the amount of coating polymer and on the efficiency of the coating reaction was investigated in details and discussed in light of the physicochemical properties of the seed mineral. Electrostatic attraction between the positive end groups of the macromolecules and the inorganic surface proved to be the driving force of the polymer assembly on the seed surface at high pH, while polymerization in adsorbed surfactant bilayers (so-called admicellar polymerization) appeared to be the predominant mechanism of coating at lower pH. Optimal conditions have been found to reach high encapsulation efficiencies and to obtain a regular polymer layer around silica.  相似文献

Particle formation and particle growth compete in the course of an emulsion polymerization reaction. Any variation in the rate of particle growth, therefore, will result in an opposite effect on the rate of particle formation. The particle formation in a semibatch emulsion polymerization of styrene under monomer‐starved conditions was studied. The semibatch emulsion polymerization reactions were started by the monomer being fed at a low rate to a reaction vessel containing deionized water, an emulsifier, and an initiator. The number of polymer particles increased with a decreasing monomer feed rate. A much larger number of particles (within 1–2 orders of magnitude) than that generally expected from a conventional batch emulsion polymerization was obtained. The results showed a higher dependence of the number of polymer particles on the emulsifier and initiator concentrations compared with that for a batch emulsion polymerization. The size distribution of the particles was characterized by a positive skewness due to the declining rate of the growth of particles during the nucleation stage. A routine for monomer partitioning among the polymer phase, the aqueous phase, and micelles was developed. The results showed that particle formation most likely occurred under monomer‐starved conditions. A small average radical number was obtained because of the formation of a large number of polymer particles, so the kinetics of the system could be explained by a zero–one system. The particle size distribution of the latexes broadened with time as a result of stochastic broadening associated with zero–one systems.

Polymeric microspheres of methyl methacrylate (PMMA) have been prepared via emulsion polymerization using potassium persulfate as initiator. The polymeric spheres were also prepared with varied concentration of an additional component, 2-vinyl-4,4′-dimethylazlactone (VDMA), which greatly affected the properties of the spheres. NMR analysis indicates the presence of VDMA in the polymer particles, and FT-IR analysis shows hydrolysis of VDMA in the polymer which produced N-acryloylmethylalanine, (NAMA). The VDMA hydrolysis thus led to carboxyl functionality which served to stabilize the microspheres during the emulsion polymerization showing a significant effect on particle size, distribution, and morphology, but little effect on molecular weight or thermal properties of the polymer. Also the effect of varying the concentration of initiator (potassium persulfate, KPS) was investigated, and had little effect on particle size or distribution or molecular weight of the polymer particles.  相似文献

Two-step aqueous polymerizations with a water-soluble initiator of potassium persulfate were conducted to prepare anisotropic composite particles incorporating a silica core smaller than 100 nm. The two-step polymerization consisted of the first polymerization to coat the silica cores with cross-linked polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) shell and the second polymerization to protrude a polystyrene (PSt) bulge from the core–shell particles. The concentration of ionic comonomer of sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS) in the first polymerization was an important factor to stabilize the core–shell particles during the second polymerization as well as the first one, and an appropriate concentration of NaSS could prepare the anisotropic composite particles incorporating a single core. Another important factor for small, anisotropic composite particles was duration time for swelling the core–shell particles with the second monomer of styrene. Extension of the duration time from 2 to 4 h facilitated protrusion of the PSt bulge from the particles incorporating a 44-nm silica core. The composite particles were also employed to fabricate anisotropic hollow particles. Chemical etching of silica component in the composite particles with hydrofluoric acid successfully created anisotropic hollow polymer particles with a cavity size corresponding to the silica cores.  相似文献

Spherical molecularly imprinted polymer particles obtained via precipitation polymerization, were introduced as a pseudostationary phase in capillary electrophoresis (CE) to study molecular recognition. Analyses were performed via a partial filling technique using (+)-ephedrine-imprinted microspheres (100-200 nm) which were polymerized from methacrylic acid and 1,1,1-Tris(hydroxymethyl)propanetrimethacrylate using acetonitrile as the solvent. The influence of pH and the modifier content on the separation was investigated. A 0.1% w/v suspension in an aqueous 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 2.5 with 40% acetonitrile) was hydrodynamically injected into the CE system (80% of the effective capillary length) and led to full baseline separation of racemic ephedrine within 10 min.  相似文献

A pair of polymeric selectors potentially responding to stimulation was introduced onto monosized porous polymer particles to be evaluated as a packing material for HPLC. Possible complexes formed between polyacrylamide (PAAm) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) were utilized as stimulus responsive polymeric selectors. Uniformly sized base polymer particle was prepared by multi-step swelling and polymerization method, while the introduction of PAAm and PMAA was done by newly invented modification technique. In this technique, a solvent in which both acrylamide (AAm) and methacrylic acid (MAA) monomers are soluble, but PAAm and PMAA are insoluble, was utilized as a modification medium. The polymer particle doubly modified with PAAm and PMAA was utilized as packing material for HPLC and the stimulus responses were evaluated by changing temperature or pH to check change of the slope of a Van't Hoff plot. By using water as a mobile phase, the expected inflection point of the Van't Hoff plot was observed at upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of the polymer complexes and the temperature responsive ability was observed. Moreover, pH responsive ability was studied by using buffer of either pH 4 or 10 as mobile phase. Slope of the plot was changed in buffer of pH 4, but no change of slope was observed in the buffer of pH 10.  相似文献
