This article describes the scientific objectives, the scientific and operational plans and the observational programme of the international Atlantic Tropical Experiment in which some 70 countries pclrticipated during Jun-September 1974. The main aim waa to make, for the first time, an intensive study of the structure, evolution and transport properties of tropical weather systems and their role in the global circulation of the atmosphere as a whole. Some preliminary results are described but it will be two or three years before the vast mass of data is fully processed and analysed and made available in the form of validated data sets for detailed researoh studies and for input to numerical models. However, there is already good reason to believe that the major scientific objectives of the experiment will be achieved and that the knowledge gained will lead to improved weather forecasting both in the tropics, and in middle latitudes where accurate predictions for more than about three days ahead may not be possible without taking into account the import of heat and moiature from the tropical oceans through the large convective clouds of the tropical atmosphere.  相似文献

Cellular behaviour is governed by gene regulatory processes that are intrinsically dynamic and nonlinear, and are subject to non-negligible amounts of random fluctuations. Such conditions are ubiquitous in physical systems, where they have been studied for decades using the tools of statistical and nonlinear physics. The goal of this introductory tutorial is to show how approaches traditionally used in physics can help in reaching a systems-level understanding of living cells. To that end, we present an overview of the dynamical phenomena exhibited by genetic circuits and their functional significance. We also describe the theoretical and experimental approaches that are being used to unravel the relationship between circuit structure and function in dynamical cellular processes under the influence ofnoise. Studies are discussed both at the single-cell level and in cellular populations, where intercellular coupling plays an important role.  相似文献

A comparison is made between the competing processes of x-ray scattering and photoelectric absorption. The latter topic is then developed more fully, particular attention being paid to absorption fine-structure and its relevance to the study of the unoccupied energy levels available to electrons in solids. Electron wave scattering theories of metal fine-structure are outlined, together with the simultaneous plasmon emission concept for transition metals and the bound ejected electron theory for the solid halides of potassium.  相似文献
