The variation of the axial and radial components of the residual stresses in fiber-reinforced polyethylene with distance from the fiber has been investigated. It is shown that, irrespective of the agent employed, coupling leads to an increase in stresses. The values obtained for the residual stresses are compared with the adhesion strength determined by the shearing method. The results of an experimental investigation of the residual stresses in wound glass-reinforced plastic rings are presented. The residual stresses were determined by the Davidenkov method. The kinetics of the temperature residual stresses and strains in thick-walled reinforced-plastic cylinders and rings have been experimentally investigated employing a special procedure for continuously monitoring the internal strains and stresses in the various zones of the semifinished product during the heat treatment stage. The effect of the resin polymerization (polycondensation) temperature and the mandrel material on the magnitude and distribution of the temperature stresses is considered. Conclusion By increasing the curing temperature and reducing the winding rate, it is possible to obtain compressive radial stresses in a cylindrical product during the entire curing stage — which should prevent loss of integrity during the curing operation. When the duration of the curing process is limited, the magnitude of the compressive stresses will depend in an extreme manner on curing temperature. Theoretical investigation of the stress-strain state at special points of constructions, e.g., in adhesion joints, has demonstrated that the stress state in the contact zone strongly depends on the configuration of the zone. In order to verify these results, some experiments were carried out. Cylindrical polymer specimens having a circular groove at one of its ends were cemented to steel mushrooms and tested for abruption in tension and cantilever bending. The experiments showed that the adhesive strength depended on the profile of the joint and had a maximum at the optimum value of the angle of the joint and a minimum when the groove was absent. The ratio between the maximum and minimum strength values was 1.5 in tension and 2.5 in bending. The greater effect in the latter case can be explained by the high gradient of the stresses in bending. The results of a photoelastic investigation of the distributions of shrinkage and temperature residual stresses in glued joints and coatings are compared. The degree of nonuniformity of the residual stress distribution over the length and thickness is determined as a function of the scale factor. It is shown that the bulk of the residual stresses in metal joints glued with K-115 epoxy adhesive are temperature stresses, which may reach 130 kgf/cm2. A new theoretical basis is proposed for the biomechanism of fractures of the diaphysis of long tubular bones resulting from bending deformation. Bone damage is shown to result from the concentration of maximum tensile stresses on the tension side and shear stresses in the compression zone.
