This paper explores scheduling a realistic variant of open shops with parallel machines per working stage. Since real production floors seldom employ a single machine for each operation, the regular open shop problem is very often in practice extended with a set of parallel machines at each stage. The purpose of duplicating machines in parallel is to either eliminate or to reduce the impact of bottleneck stages on the overall shop efficiency. The objective is to find the sequence which minimizes total completion times of jobs. We first formulate the problem as an effective mixed integer linear programming model, and then we employ memetic algorithms to solve the problem. We employ Taguchi method to evaluate the effects of different operators and parameters on the performance of memetic algorithm. To further enhance the memetic algorithm, we hybridize it with a simple form of simulated annealing as its local search engine. To assess the performance of the model and algorithms, we establish two computational experiments. The first one is small-sized instances by which the model and general performance of the algorithms are evaluated. The second one consists of large-sized instances by which we further evaluate the algorithms.  相似文献

This note introduces a new lower bound for the problem of scheduling on parallel identical machines to minimize total tardiness that is based on the concepts used in the two lower bounds developed by Shim and Kim [Shim, S.O., Kim, Y.D., 2007. Scheduling on parallel identical machines to minimize total tardiness. European Journal of Operational Research 177, 135–146]. The note shows that the new lower bound dominates the three lower bounds used in Shim and Kim’s branch-and-bound algorithm and can be used in place of these lower bounds to lower the enumeration required.  相似文献

This paper investigates scheduling problems with simultaneous considerations of deterioration effects and deteriorating multi-maintenance activities on unrelated parallel machines. We examine two models of scheduling with the deterioration effect, namely the job-dependent and position-dependent deterioration model and the time-dependent deterioration model. We assume that each machine may be subject to several maintenance activities over the scheduling horizon, and the duration of maintenance on a machine depends on its running time. Moreover, due to the restriction of the budget of maintenance, the upper bound of the total maintenance frequencies on all the machines is assumed to be known in advance. The objective is to find jointly the optimal maintenance frequencies, the optimal maintenance positions, and the optimal job sequences such that the total completion time is minimized. If the number of machines is fixed, we introduce polynomial time solutions for all the versions of the problem under study.  相似文献

We consider the problem of preemptive scheduling n jobs on two uniform parallel machines. All jobs have equal processing requirements. For each job we are given its due date. The objective is to find a schedule minimizing total tardiness ∑Ti. We suggest an O(n log n) algorithm to solve this problem.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the identical parallel machine scheduling problem with a planned maintenance period on each machine to minimize the sum of completion times. This paper is a first approach for this problem. We propose three exact methods to solve the problem at hand: mixed integer linear programming methods, a dynamic programming based method and a branch-and-bound method. Several constructive heuristics are proposed. A lower bound, dominance properties and two branching schemes for the branch-and-bound method are presented. Experimental results show that the methods can give satisfactory solutions.  相似文献

We consider the single machine scheduling problem to minimize total completion time with fixed jobs, precedence constraints and release dates. There are some jobs that are already fixed in the schedule. The remaining jobs are free to be assigned to any free-time intervals on the machine in such a way that they do not overlap with the fixed jobs. Each free job has a release date, and the order of processing the free jobs is restricted by the given precedence constraints. The objective is to minimize the total completion time. This problem is strongly NP-hard. Approximability of this problem is studied in this paper. When the jobs are processed without preemption, we show that the problem has a linear-time n-approximation algorithm, but no pseudopolynomial-time (1 − δ)n-approximation algorithm exists even if all the release dates are zero, for any constant δ > 0, if P ≠ NP, where n is the number of jobs; for the case that the jobs have no precedence constraints and no release dates, we show that the problem has no pseudopolynomial-time (2 − δ)-approximation algorithm, for any constant δ > 0, if P ≠ NP, and for the weighted version, we show that the problem has no polynomial-time 2q(n)-approximation algorithm and no pseudopolynomial-time q(n)-approximation algorithm, where q(n) is any given polynomial of n. When preemption is allowed, we show that the problem with independent jobs can be solved in O(n log n) time with distinct release dates, but the weighted version is strongly NP-hard even with no release dates; the problems with weighted independent jobs or with jobs under precedence constraints are shown having polynomial-time n-approximation algorithms. We also establish the relationship of the approximability between the fixed job scheduling problem and the bin-packing problem.  相似文献

This paper studies the parallel machines bi-criteria scheduling problem (PMBSP) in a deteriorating system. Sequencing and scheduling problems (SSP) have seldom considered the two phenomena concurrently. This paper discusses the parallel machines scheduling problem with the effects of machine and job deterioration. By the machine deterioration effect, we mean that each machine deteriorates at a different rate. This deterioration is considered in terms of cost which depends on the production rate, the machine’s operating characteristics and the kind of work done by each machine. Moreover, job processing times are increasing functions of their starting times and follow a simple linear deterioration. The objective functions are minimizing total tardiness and machine deteriorating cost. The problem of total tardiness on identical parallel machines is NP-hard, thus the problem with machine deteriorating cost as an additional term is also NP-hard. We propose the LP-metric method to show the importance of our proposed multi-objective problem. A metaheuristic algorithm is developed to locate optimal or near optimal solutions based on a Tabu search mechanism. Numerical examples are presented to show the efficiency of this model.  相似文献

We consider the scheduling problem of minimizing the average-weighted completion time on identical parallel machines when jobs are arriving over time. For both the preemptive and the nonpreemptive setting, we show that straightforward extensions of Smith's ratio rule yield smaller competitive ratios than the previously best-known deterministic on-line algorithms.  相似文献

Baker and Nuttle [K.R. Baker, H.L.W. Nuttle, Sequencing independent jobs with a single resource, Naval Research Logistics Quarterly 27 (1980) 499–510] studied the following single-variable-resource scheduling problem: sequencing n jobs for processing by a single resource to minimize a function of job completion times, when the availability of the resource varies over time. When the objective function to be minimized is the total weighted completion time, Baker and Nuttle conjectured that the problem is NP-hard. We show in this note that the conjecture is true.  相似文献

This paper addresses a single machine scheduling problem in which the actual job processing times are determined by resource allocation function, its position in a sequence and a rate-modifying activity simultaneously. We discuss two objective functions with two resource allocation functions under the consideration of a rate-modifying activity. We show that the problems are solvable in O(n4)O(n4) time for a linear resource allocation function and are solvable in O(n2logn)O(n2logn) time for a convex resource allocation function.  相似文献

Wang et al. (J Operat Res Soc 62: 1898–1902, 2011) studied the m identical parallel-machine and unrelated parallel-machine scheduling with a deteriorating maintenance activity to minimize the total completion time. They showed that each problem can be solved in O(n 2m+3) time, where n is the number of jobs. In this note, we discuss the unrelated parallel-machine setting and show that the problem can be optimally solved by a lower order algorithm.  相似文献

We consider the problem of scheduling multi-operation jobs on a singe machine to minimize the total completion time. Each job consists of several operations that belong to different families. In a schedule each family of job operations may be processed as batches with each batch incurring a set-up time. A job is completed when all of its operations have been processed. We first show that the problem is strongly NP-hard even when the set-up times are common and each operation is not missing. When the operations have identical processing times and either the maximum set-up time is sufficiently small or the minimum set-up time is sufficiently large, the problem can be solved in polynomial time. We then consider the problem under the job-batch restriction in which the operations of each batch is partitioned into operation batches according to a partition of the jobs. We show that this case of the problem can be solved in polynomial time under a certain condition.  相似文献

We consider a problem of scheduling n independent jobs on m parallel identical machines. The jobs are available at time zero, but the machines may not be available simultaneously at time zero. We concentrate on two goals separately, namely, minimizing a cost function containing total completion time and total absolute differences in completion times; minimizing a cost function containing total waiting time and total absolute differences in waiting times. In this paper, we present polynomial time algorithm to solve this problem.  相似文献

We propose an exact branch-and-bound algorithm for the problem of maximizing the minimum machine completion time on identical parallel machines. The proposed algorithm is based on tight lower and upper bounds as well as an effective symmetry-breaking branching strategy. Computational results performed on a large set of randomly generated instances attest to the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.   相似文献

We consider a scheduling problem in which n jobs with distinct deadlines are to be scheduled on a single machine. The objective is to find a feasible job sequence that minimizes the total weighted completion time. We present an efficient branch-and-bound algorithm that fully exploits the principle of optimality. Favorable numerical results are also reported on an extensive set of problem instances of 20-120 jobs.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the problem of scheduling n independent jobs on m identical parallel machines for the objective of minimizing total tardiness of the jobs. We develop dominance properties and lower bounds, and develop a branch and bound algorithm using these properties and lower bounds as well as upper bounds obtained from a heuristic algorithm. Computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems and results show that the algorithm solves problems with moderate sizes in a reasonable amount of computation time.  相似文献

We consider the parallel-machine scheduling problem in which the processing time of a job is a simple linear increasing function of its starting time. The objective is to minimize the total completion time. We give a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for the case with m identical machines, where m is fixed. This study solves an open problem that has been posed in the literature for ten years.  相似文献

This paper considers the scheduling problem of parallel batch processing machines with non-identical job sizes. The jobs are processed in batches and the machines have the same capacity. The models of minimizing makespan and total completion time are given using mixed integer programming method and the computational complexity is analyzed. The bound on the number of feasible solutions is given and the properties of the optimal solutions are presented. Then a polynomial time algorithm is proposed and the worst case ratios for minimizing total completion time and makespan is proved to be 2 and (8/3–2/3 m) respectively. To test the proposed algorithm, we generate different levels of random instances. The computational results demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm for minimizing the two objectives.  相似文献
