This paper deals with the packing problem of circles and non-convex polygons, which can be both translated and rotated into a strip with prohibited regions. Using the Φ-function technique, a mathematical model of the problem is constructed and its characteristics are investigated. Based on the characteristics, a solution approach to the problem is offered. The approach includes the following methods: an optimization method by groups of variables to construct starting points, a modification of the Zoutendijk feasible direction method to search for local minima and a special non-exhaustive search of local minima to find an approximation to a global minimum. A number of numerical results are given. The numerical results are compared with the best known ones.  相似文献

Given a function on Rn with many multiple local minima we approximate it from below, via concave minimization, with a piecewise-linear convex function by using sample points from the given function. The piecewise-linear function is then minimized using a single linear program to obtain an approximation to the global minimum of the original function. Successive shrinking of the original search region to which this procedure is applied leads to fairly accurate estimates, within 0.57%, of the global minima of synthetic nonconvex piecewise-quadratic functions for which the global minima are known exactly.  相似文献

Global optimization is a field of mathematical programming dealing with finding global (absolute) minima of multi-dimensional multiextremal functions. Problems of this kind where the objective function is non-differentiable, satisfies the Lipschitz condition with an unknown Lipschitz constant, and is given as a “black-box” are very often encountered in engineering optimization applications. Due to the presence of multiple local minima and the absence of differentiability, traditional optimization techniques using gradients and working with problems having only one minimum cannot be applied in this case. These real-life applied problems are attacked here by employing one of the mostly abstract mathematical objects—space-filling curves. A practical derivative-free deterministic method reducing the dimensionality of the problem by using space-filling curves and working simultaneously with all possible estimates of Lipschitz and Hölder constants is proposed. A smart adaptive balancing of local and global information collected during the search is performed at each iteration. Conditions ensuring convergence of the new method to the global minima are established. Results of numerical experiments on 1000 randomly generated test functions show a clear superiority of the new method w.r.t. the popular method DIRECT and other competitors.  相似文献

The paper considers the problem of covering compact polygonal set by identical circles of minimal radius. A mathematical model of the problem based on Voronoi polygons is constructed and its characteristics are investigated. On the ground of the characteristics a modification of the Zoutendijk feasible directions method is developed to search local minima. A special approach is suggested to choose starting points. Functions with local minima and size of their region of attraction known a priori, are often needed for testing the performance of algorithms that solve global optimization problems. In this paper we investigate a technique for constructing test functions for global optimization problems for which we fix a priori: (i) the problem dimension, (ii) the number of local minima, (iii) the local minima points, (iv) the function values of the local minima. Further, the size of the region of attraction of each local minimum may be made large or small. The technique consists of first constructing a convex quadratic function and then systematically distorting selected parts of this function so as to introduce local minima.  相似文献

We present the AQUARS (A QUAsi-multistart Response Surface) framework for finding the global minimum of a computationally expensive black-box function subject to bound constraints. In a traditional multistart approach, the local search method is blind to the trajectories of the previous local searches. Hence, the algorithm might find the same local minima even if the searches are initiated from points that are far apart. In contrast, AQUARS is a novel approach that locates the promising local minima of the objective function by performing local searches near the local minima of a response surface (RS) model of the objective function. It ignores neighborhoods of fully explored local minima of the RS model and it bounces between the best partially explored local minimum and the least explored local minimum of the RS model. We implement two AQUARS algorithms that use a radial basis function model and compare them with alternative global optimization methods on an 8-dimensional watershed model calibration problem and on 18 test problems. The alternatives include EGO, GLOBALm, MLMSRBF (Regis and Shoemaker in INFORMS J Comput 19(4):497–509, 2007), CGRBF-Restart (Regis and Shoemaker in J Global Optim 37(1):113–135 2007), and multi level single linkage (MLSL) coupled with two types of local solvers: SQP and Mesh Adaptive Direct Search (MADS) combined with kriging. The results show that the AQUARS methods generally use fewer function evaluations to identify the global minimum or to reach a target value compared to the alternatives. In particular, they are much better than EGO and MLSL coupled to MADS with kriging on the watershed calibration problem and on 15 of the test problems.  相似文献

This paper deals with the statistical study of the local search methods which we used in Part I of this work. In that part, a tactical planning model of the rail freight transportation was defined as a network design model. Different local search methods have been used to solve it: Simulated Annealing, Tabu Search and a ‘Descent’ method. The solution and method convergence depends on the initial feasible solution and the convexity of the feasible region, so the comparison among them will be made with the help of statistical theory. Assuming the hypothesis that the distribution of local minima can be represented by the Weibull distribution, it is possible to obtain an approach to the global minimum and a confidence interval of this. The global minimum estimation has been used to compare the heuristic methods and the parameters for a given heuristic, and to obtain a stopping criterion.  相似文献

By far the most efficient methods for global optimization are based on starting a local optimization routine from an appropriate subset of uniformly distributed starting points. As the number of local optima is frequently unknown in advance, it is a crucial problem when to stop the sequence of sampling and searching. By viewing a set of observed minima as a sample from a generalized multinomial distribution whose cells correspond to the local optima of the objective function, we obtain the posterior distribution of the number of local optima and of the relative size of their regions of attraction. This information is used to construct sequential Bayesian stopping rules which find the optimal trade off between reliability and computational effort.  相似文献

A function on Rn with multiple local minima is approximated from below, via linear programming, by a linear combination of convex kernel functions using sample points from the given function. The resulting convex kernel underestimator is then minimized, using either a linear equation solver for a linear-quadratic kernel or by a Newton method for a Gaussian kernel, to obtain an approximation to a global minimum of the original function. Successive shrinking of the original search region to which this procedure is applied leads to fairly accurate estimates, within 0.0001% for a Gaussian kernel function, relative to global minima of synthetic nonconvex piecewise-quadratic functions for which the global minima are known exactly. Gaussian kernel underestimation improves by a factor of ten the relative error obtained using a piecewise-linear underestimator (O.L. Mangasarian, J.B. Rosen, and M.E. Thompson, Journal of Global Optimization, Volume 32, Number 1, Pages 1–9, 2005), while cutting computational time by an average factor of over 28.  相似文献

Motivated by the fact that important real-life problems, such as the protein docking problem, can be accurately modeled by minimizing a nonconvex piecewise-quadratic function, a nonconvex underestimator is constructed as the minimum of a finite number of strictly convex quadratic functions. The nonconvex underestimator is generated by minimizing a linear function on a reverse convex region and utilizes sample points from a given complex function to be minimized. The global solution of the piecewise-quadratic underestimator is known exactly and gives an approximation to the global minimum of the original function. Successive shrinking of the initial search region to which this procedure is applied leads to fairly accurate estimates, within 0.0060%, of the global minima of synthetic nonconvex functions for which the global minima are known. Furthermore, this process can approximate a nonconvex protein docking function global minimum within four-figure relative accuracy in six refinement steps. This is less than half the number of refinement steps required by previous models such as the convex kernel underestimator (Mangasarian et al., Computational Optimization and Applications, to appear) and produces higher accuracy here.  相似文献

Molecular conformation problems arising in computational chemistry require the global minimization of a non-convex potential energy function representing the interactions of, for example, the component atoms in a molecular system. Typically the number of local minima on the potential energy surface grows exponentially with system size, and often becomes enormous even for relatively modestly sized systems. Thus the simple multistart strategy of randomly sampling local minima becomes impractical. However, for many molecular conformation potential energy surfaces the local minima can be organized by a simple adjacency relation into a single or at most a small number of funnels. A distinguished local minimum lies at the bottom of each funnel and a monotonically descending sequence of adjacent local minima connects every local minimum in the funnel with the funnel bottom. Thus the global minimum can be found among the comparatively small number of funnel bottoms, and a multistart strategy based on sampling funnel bottoms becomes viable. In this paper we present such an algorithm of the basin-hopping type and apply it to the Lennard–Jones cluster problem, an intensely studied molecular conformation problem which has become a benchmark for global optimization algorithms. Results of numerical experiments are presented which confirm both the multifunneling character of the Lennard–Jones potential surface as well as the efficiency of the algorithm. The algorithm has found all of the current putative global minima in the literature up to 110 atoms, as well as discovered a new global minimum for the 98-atom cluster of a novel geometrical class.  相似文献

A successive descent algorithm over a system of local minima has been developed to find the global minimum of a function of many variables defined on a simply connected compact set. If the number of local minima is finite and a bound on the global minimum is given, the algorithm finds the global minimum in finitely many steps. Test examples are presented. We consider the generalized Nash equilibrium problem which, in contrast to the standard Nash equilibrium problem, allows joint constraints of all players involved in the game. Using a regularized Nikaido-Isoda-function, we then present three optimization problems related to the generalized Nash equilibrium problem. The first optimization problem is a complete reformulation of the generalized Nash game in the sense that the global minima are precisely the solutions of the game. However, this reformulation is nonsmooth. We then modify this approach and obtain a smooth constrained optimization problem whose global minima correspond to so-called normalized Nash equilibria. The third approach uses the difference of two regularized Nikaido-Isoda-functions in order to get a smooth unconstrained optimization problem whose global minima are, once again, precisely the normalized Nash equilibria. Conditions for stationary points to be global minima of the two smooth optimization problems are also given. Some numerical results illustrate the behaviour of our approaches.  相似文献

In this study, we consider identification of parameters in a non-linear continuum-mechanical model of arteries by fitting the models response to clinical data. The fitting of the model is formulated as a constrained non-linear, non-convex least-squares minimization problem. The model parameters are directly related to the underlying physiology of arteries, and correctly identified they can be of great clinical value. The non-convexity of the minimization problem implies that incorrect parameter values, corresponding to local minima or stationary points may be found, however. Therefore, we investigate the feasibility of using a branch-and-bound algorithm to identify the parameters to global optimality. The algorithm is tested on three clinical data sets, in each case using four increasingly larger regions around a candidate global solution in the parameter space. In all cases, the candidate global solution is found already in the initialization phase when solving the original non-convex minimization problem from multiple starting points, and the remaining time is spent on increasing the lower bound on the optimal value. Although the branch-and-bound algorithm is parallelized, the overall procedure is in general very time-consuming.

The direct kinematics problem for parallel robots can be stated as follows: given values of the joint variables, the corresponding Cartesian variable values, the pose of the end-effector, must be found. Most of the times the direct kinematics problem involves the solution of a system of non-linear equations. The most efficient methods to solve such kind of equations assume convexity in a cost function which minimum is the solution of the non-linear system. In consequence, the capacity of such methods depends on the knowledge about an starting point which neighboring region is convex, hence the method can find the global minimum. This article propose a method based on probabilistic learning about an adequate starting point for the Dogleg method which assumes local convexity of the function. The proposed method efficiently avoids the local minima, without need of human intervention or apriori knowledge, thus it shows a more robust performance than the simple Dogleg method or other gradient based methods. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed hybrid method, numerical experiments and the respective discussion are presented. The proposal can be extended to other structures of closed-kinematics chains, to the general solution of systems of non-linear equations, and to the minimization of non-linear functions.  相似文献

The paper considers a problem of packing unequal circles into a rectangular strip with fixed width and minimal length. We develop the idea of increasing the dimension of the solution space by assuming radii of circles to be variables. A mathematical model of the problem is constructed and its characteristics are investigated. Taking into account the characteristics we offer a solution strategy of the problem including a number of non-linear programming subproblems of packing circles of variable radii. The solution strategy involves special ways of construction of starting points, calculation of local minima, jump from one local extremum to another, decrease of the problem dimension and rearrangement of pairs of circles. For calculating local extrema an interior point optimizer together with the concept of active inequalities are used. We compare 146 numerical benchmark examples and give seven new ones for 125, 150, 175, 225, 250, 275 and 300 circles.  相似文献

The examined algorithm for global optimization of the multiextremal non-differentiable function is based on the following idea: the problem of determination of the global minimum point of the function f(x) on the set (f(x) has a finite number of local minima in this domain) is reduced to the problem of finding all local minima and their attraction spheres with a consequent choice of the global minimum point among them. This reduction is made by application of the optimal set partitioning method. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on a set of well-known one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional test functions. Nonlinear complementarity as unconstrained and constrained minimization   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
The nonlinear complementarity problem is cast as an unconstrained minimization problem that is obtained from an augmented Lagrangian formulation. The dimensionality of the unconstrained problem is the same as that of the original problem, and the penalty parameter need only be greater than one. Another feature of the unconstrained problem is that it has global minima of zero at precisely all the solution points of the complementarity problem without any monotonicity assumption. If the mapping of the complementarity problem is differentiable, then so is the objective of the unconstrained problem, and its gradient vanishes at all solution points of the complementarity problem. Under assumptions of nondegeneracy and linear independence of gradients of active constraints at a complementarity problem solution, the corresponding global unconstrained minimum point is locally unique. A Wolfe dual to a standard constrained optimization problem associated with the nonlinear complementarity problem is also formulated under a monotonicity and differentiability assumption. Most of the standard duality results are established even though the underlying constrained optimization problem may be nonconvex. We present a decomposition method for indefinite quadratic programming problems having n variables and m linear constraints. The given problem is decomposed into at most m QP subproblems each having m linear constraints and n-1 variables. All global minima, all isolated local minima and some of the non-isolated local minima for the given problem are obtained from those of the lower dimensional subproblems. One way to continue solving the given problem is to apply the decomposition method again to the subproblems and repeatedly doing so until subproblems of dimension 1 are produced and these can be solved directly. A technique to reduce the potentially large number of subproblems is formulated.  相似文献
