Let ‖·‖ be a norm on the algebra ?n of all n × n matrices over ?. An interesting problem in matrix theory is that “Are there two norms ‖·‖1 and ‖·‖2 on ?n such that ‖A‖ = max|‖Ax2: ‖x1 = 1} for all A ∈ ?n?” We will investigate this problem and its various aspects and will discuss some conditions under which ‖·‖1 = ‖·‖2.  相似文献

Consider the Sobolev space W 2 n (?+) on the semiaxis with norm of general form defined by a quadratic polynomial in derivatives with nonnegative coefficients. We study the problem of exact constants A n,k in inequalities of Kolmogorov type for the values of intermediate derivatives |f (k)(0)| ≤ A n,k f‖. In the general case, the expression for the constants A n,k is obtained as the ratio of two determinants. Using a general formula, we obtain an explicit expression for the constants A n,k in the case of the following norms: $$ \left\| f \right\|_1^2 = \left\| f \right\|_{L_2 }^2 + \left\| {f^{(n)} } \right\|_{L_2 }^2 and\left\| f \right\|_2^2 = \sum\limits_{l = 0}^n {\left\| {f^{(l)} } \right\|_{L_2 }^2 } . $$ In the case of the norm ‖ · ‖1, formulas for the constants A n,k were obtained earlier by another method due to Kalyabin. The asymptotic behavior of the constants A n,k is also studied in the case of the norm ‖ · ‖2. In addition, we prove a symmetry property of the constants A n,k in the general case.  相似文献

In this article we focus on perturbation bounds of unitary polar factors in polar decompositions for rectangular matrices. First we present two absolute perturbation bounds in unitarily invariant norms and in spectral norm, respectively, for any rectangular complex matrices, which improve recent results of Li and Sun (SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 2003; 25 :362–372). Secondly, a new absolute bound for complex matrices of full rank is given. When ‖A ? Ã2 ? ‖A ? ÃF, our bound for complex matrices is the same as in real case. Finally, some asymptotic bounds given by Mathias (SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 1993; 14 :588–593) for both real and complex square matrices are generalized. Let A be an n×n complex matrix and r be the maximum size of its principal submatrices with no off-diagonal zero entries. Suppose A has zero main diagonal and x is a unit n-vector. Then, letting ‖A‖ be the Frobenius norm of A, we show that
|〈Ax,x|2?(1−1/2r−1/2n)‖A2.  相似文献

The Navier problem is to find a solution of the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations such that the normal component of the velocity and a linear combination of the tangential components of the velocity and the traction assume prescribed value a and s at the boundary. If Ω is exterior it is required that the velocity converges to an assigned constant vector u0 at infinity. We prove that a solution exists in a bounded domain provided ‖aL2(∂Ω) is less than a computable positive constant and is unique if ‖aW1/2,2(∂Ω)+‖sL2(∂Ω) is suitably small. As far as exterior domains are concerned, we show that a solution exists if ‖aL2(∂Ω)+‖au0nL2(∂Ω) is small.  相似文献

In this paper we first characterize the pre-Hilbert algebras with a norm-one central idempotent e such that ‖ex‖ = ‖x‖ for any xA. This generalizes a well-known theorem by Ingelstam asserting that every alternative pre-Hilbert algebra with a unit 1 such that ‖1‖ = 1 is isomorphic to ?, ?, ? or $\mathbb{O}$ . We also show that every power-associative pre-Hilbert algebra satisfying ‖x 2‖ = ‖x2 for every element has a unique nonzero idempotent, which is a unit element. In fact, the same conclusion will be proved in a more general setting. As application we give some conditions characterizing when a real algebra A, which is a prehilbert space, is isomorphic to one of the Hilbert algebras ?, ?, ? or $\mathbb{O}$ .  相似文献

Let V be a complex inner product space of positive dimension m with inner product 〈·,·〉, and let Tn(V) denote the set of all n-linear complex-valued functions defined on V×V×?×V (n-copies). By Sn(V) we mean the set of all symmetric members of Tn(V). We extend the inner product, 〈·,·〉, on V to Tn(V) in the usual way, and we define multiple tensor products A1A2⊗?⊗An and symmetric products A1·A2?An, where q1,q2,…,qn are positive integers and AiTqi(V) for each i, as expected. If ASn(V), then Ak denotes the symmetric product A·A?A where there are k copies of A. We are concerned with producing the best lower bounds for ‖Ak2, particularly when n=2. In this case we are able to show that ‖Ak2 is a symmetric polynomial in the eigenvalues of a positive semi-definite Hermitian matrix, MA, that is closely related to A. From this we are able to obtain many lower bounds for ‖Ak2. In particular, we are able to show that if ω denotes 1/r where r is the rank of MA, and , then

In this paper, assume that h is nonnegative and ‖hL2>0, we prove that if ‖hL2 is sufficiently small, then there are at least three positive solutions of Eq. (1) in an exterior cylinder domain.  相似文献

We introduce a bound M of f, ‖f?M?2‖f, which allows us to give for 0?p<∞ sharp upper bounds, and for −∞<p<0 sharp lower bounds for the average of |f|p over E if the average of f over E is zero. As an application we give a new proof of Grüss's inequality estimating the covariance of two random variables. We also give a new estimate for the error term in the trapezoidal rule.  相似文献

We prove the spectral radius inequality ρ(A1°A2°?°Ak)?ρ(A1A2?Ak) for nonnegative matrices using the ideas of Horn and Zhang. We obtain the inequality ‖A°B‖?ρ(ATB) for nonnegative matrices, which improves Schur’s classical inequality ‖A°B‖?‖A‖‖B‖, where ‖·‖ denotes the spectral norm. We also give counterexamples to two conjectures about the Hadamard product.  相似文献

Given a bounded operator A on a Banach space X with Drazin inverse AD and index r, we study the class of group invertible bounded operators B such that I+AD(BA) is invertible and R(B)∩N(Ar)={0}. We show that they can be written with respect to the decomposition X=R(Ar)⊕N(Ar) as a matrix operator, , where B1 and are invertible. Several characterizations of the perturbed operators are established, extending matrix results. We analyze the perturbation of the Drazin inverse and we provide explicit upper bounds of ‖B?AD‖ and ‖BB?ADA‖. We obtain a result on the continuity of the group inverse for operators on Banach spaces.  相似文献

Given a finite set {Ax}x ∈ X of nonnegative matrices, we derive joint upper and lower bounds for the row sums of the matrices D−1 A(x) D, x ∈ X, where D is a specially chosen nonsingular diagonal matrix. These bounds, depending only on the sparsity patterns of the matrices A(x) and their row sums, are used to obtain joint two-sided bounds for the Perron roots of given nonnegative matrices, joint upper bounds for the spectral radii of given complex matrices, bounds for the joint and lower spectral radii of a matrix set, and conditions sufficient for all convex combinations of given matrices to be Schur stable. Let ‖⋅‖ be a norm on Rn. Averaging ‖(ε1x1,…,εnxn)‖ over all the n2 choices of , we obtain an expression |||x||| which is an unconditional norm on Rn. Bourgain, Lindenstrauss and Milman [J. Bourgain, J. Lindenstrauss, V.D. Milman, Minkowski sums and symmetrizations, in: Geometric Aspects of Functional Analysis (1986/1987), Lecture Notes in Math., vol. 1317, Springer, Berlin, 1988, pp. 44-66] showed that, for a certain (large) constant η>1, one may average over ηn (random) choices of and obtain a norm that is isomorphic to |||⋅|||. We show that this is the case for any η>1.  相似文献

We study upper bounds on the Schur multiplier norm of Loewner matrices for concave and convex functions. These bounds then immediately lead to upper bounds on the ratio of Schatten q  -norms of commutators [A,f(B)]q/[A,B]q[A,f(B)]q/[A,B]q. We also consider operator monotone functions, for which sharper bounds are obtained.  相似文献

Let Mn(R) be the linear space of all n×n matrices over the real field R. For any AMn(R), let ρ(A) and ‖A denote the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A, respectively. By introducing a class of transformations φa on Mn(R), we show that, for any AMn(R), ρ(A)<‖A if . If AMn(R) is nonnegative, we prove that ρ(A)<‖A if and only if , and ρ(A)=‖A if and only if the transformation φA preserves the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A. As an application, we investigate a class of linear discrete dynamic systems in the form of X(k+1)=AX(k). The asymptotical stability of the zero solution of the system is established by a simple algebraic method.  相似文献

Let r 1, …, r m be positive real numbers and A 1, …, A m be n × n matrices with complex entries. In this article, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unitarily invariant norm ‖·‖, such that ‖A i ‖ = r i , for i = 1, …, m. Then we identify the greatest unitarily invariant norm which satisfies this condition. Using this, we get an approximation of unitarily invariant norms. Although the minimum unitarily invariant norm which satisfies this condition does not exist in general, we find conditions over A i s and r i s which are sufficient for the existence of such a norm. Finally, we get a characterization of unitarily invariant norms.  相似文献

This note mainly aims to improve the inequality, proposed by Böttcher and Wenzel, giving the upper bound of the Frobenius norm of the commutator of two particular matrices in ? n×n . We first propose a new upper bound on basis of the Böttcher and Wenzel’s inequality. Motivated by the method used, the inequality ‖XY ? XY F 2 ≤ 2‖X F 2 Y F 2 is finally improved into $$ \left\| {XY - YX} \right\|_F^2 \leqslant 2\left\| X \right\|_F^2 \left\| Y \right\|_F^2 - 2[tr(X^T Y)]^2 . $$ . In addition, a further improvement is made.  相似文献

Let A be a matrix with distinct eigenvalues and let w(A) be the distance from A to the set of defective matrices (using either the 2-norm or the Frobenius norm). Define Λ?, the ?-pseudospectrum of A, to be the set of points in the complex plane which are eigenvalues of matrices A+E with ‖E‖<?, and let c(A) be the supremum of all ? with the property that Λ? has n distinct components. Demmel and Wilkinson independently observed in the 1980s that w(A)?c(A), and equality was established for the 2-norm by Alam and Bora (2005). We give new results on the geometry of the pseudospectrum near points where first coalescence of the components occurs, characterizing such points as the lowest generalized saddle point of the smallest singular value of A-zI over zC. One consequence is that w(A)=c(A) for the Frobenius norm too, and another is the perhaps surprising result that the minimal distance is attained by a defective matrix in all cases. Our results suggest a new computational approach to approximating the nearest defective matrix by a variant of Newton’s method that is applicable to both generic and nongeneric cases. Construction of the nearest defective matrix involves some subtle numerical issues which we explain, and we present a simple backward error analysis showing that a certain singular vector residual measures how close the computed matrix is to a truly defective matrix. Finally, we present a result giving lower bounds on the angles of wedges contained in the pseudospectrum and emanating from generic coalescence points. Several conjectures and questions remain open.  相似文献

Let E be a Banach space with the cl-norm||·|| in E/{0}, and let S(E) = {e ∈ E: ||e|| = 1}. In this paper, a geometry characteristic for E is presented by using a geometrical construct of S(E). That is, the following theorem holds: the norm of E is of eI in E/{0} if and only if S(E) is a c1 submanifold of E, with codimS(E) = 1. The theorem is very clear, however, its proof is non-trivial, which shows an intrinsic connection between the continuous differentiability of the norm ||·|| in E/{0} and differential structure of S(E).  相似文献
