ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the correlation between morphological features of vocal fold polyps (VFPs) and subjective/objective voice parameters.MethodsPerceptual evaluations, aerodynamic and acoustic tests were performed on 47 patients with VFPs. Still images were captured from video and the morphological features associated with the size of VFP were quantified. To reveal the correlation between size-related morphological features (length of polyp base, the ratio of polyp base to vocal fold length, glottal gap area) and objective/subjective parameters of voice, Pearson's and Spearman's tests were carried out.ResultsThis cohort was composed of 30 (63.8 %) male and 17 (36.2%) female patients with the mean age of 45.2 years and 41.3 years, respectively. No correlation was found between the morphological features of VFPs and any of perceptual, aerodynamic and acoustic voice parameters.ConclusionsOur findings indicated that controversies still exist regarding the role of vocal fold polyp morphology in clinical decision making.  相似文献

Previous studies have reported that rise time of sawtooth waveforms may be discriminated in either a categorical-like manner under some experimental conditions or according to Weber's law under other conditions. In the present experiments, rise time discrimination was examined with two experimental procedures: the traditional labeling and ABX tasks used in speech perception studies and an adaptive tracking procedure used in psychophysical studies. Rise time varied from 0 to 80 ms in 10-ms intervals for sawtooth signals of 1-s duration. Discrimination functions for subjects who simply discriminated the signals on any basis whatsoever as well as functions for subjects who practiced labeling the endpoint stimuli as " pluck " and "bow" before ABX discrimination were not categorical in the ABX task. In the adaptive tracking procedure, the Weber fraction obtained from the jnds of rise time was found to be a constant above 20-ms rise time. The results from the two discrimination paradigms were then compared by predicting a jnd for rise time from the ABX discrimination data by reference to the underlying psychometric function. Using this method of analysis, discrimination results from previous studies were shown to be quite similar to the discrimination results observed in this study. Taken together the results demonstrate clearly that rise time discrimination of sawtooth signals follows predictions derived from Weber's law.  相似文献

Speech recognition software for the personal or office computer is a relatively new area of technology. As the number of these products has increased so has use of this software. Some individuals will employ speech recognition systems due to difficulty with the conventional keyboard and mouse interface: others will use it for perceived efficiency or simply novelty. Regardless of the reason for use of this technology, the voice demands associated with extended or frequent use can be high, placing the user at risk for vocal difficulties. This paper reviews the case of an individual referred to our multidisciplinary voice care program for evaluation and treatment of vocal difficulties that began secondary to utilization of speech recognition software. We discuss medical and vocal histories, examination findings, treatment, and treatment outcomes.  相似文献

Various uranium and thorium minerals have been analysed with accelerator mass spectrometry to determine their 14C content. It is found that, whenever the contribution from secondary reactions such as the 11B(α,p)14C is sufficiently low, the 14C concentration is consistent with that expected from 14C (spontaneous) cluster radioactivity from radium isotopes of the uranium and thorium natural series. Protein aggregation and misfolding have important implications in an increasing number of fields ranging from medicine to biology to nanotechnology and material science. The interest in understanding this field has accordingly increased steadily over the last two decades. During this time the number of publications that have been dedicated to protein aggregation has increased exponentially, tackling the problem from several different and sometime contradictory perspectives. This review is meant to summarize some of the highlights that come from these studies and introduce this topical issue on the subject. The factors that make a protein aggregate and the cellular strategies that defend from aggregation are discussed together with the perspectives that the accumulated knowledge may open.  相似文献

The Unruh vacuum not admitting any outgoing flux at the horizon implies that the origin of the outgoing Hawking radiation is the atmosphere of a near-horizon quantum region without resort to the firewall; however, the existence of the firewall of superplanckian excitations at the horizon can be supported by the infinite Tolman temperature at the horizon. In an exactly soluble model, we explicitly show that the firewall necessarily emerges out of the Unruh vacuum so that the Tolman temperature in the Unruh vacuum is divergent in essence due to the infinitely blueshifted negative ingoing flux crossing the horizon rather than the outgoing flux. We also show that the outgoing Hawking radiation in the Unruh vacuum indeed originates from the atmosphere, not just at the horizon, which is of no relevance to the infinite blueshift. Consequently, the firewall from the infinite Tolman temperature and the Hawking radiation from the atmosphere turn out to be compatible, once we waive the claim that the Hawking radiation in the Unruh vacuum originates from the infinitely blueshifted outgoing excitations at the horizon.  相似文献

Atomic force microscopy is used to investigate the possibility of cavity formation during crack growth in silicate glasses. Matching areas on both fracture surfaces were mapped and then compared. For silica glass, and soda-lime-silicate glass, the fracture surfaces matched to a resolution of better than 0.3 nm normal to the surface and 5 nm parallel to the surface. We could find no evidence for cavity formation in our study and suggest that completely brittle fracture occurs in glass.  相似文献

Three experiments investigated the relationship between harmonic number, harmonic resolvability, and the perception of harmonic complexes. Complexes with successive equal-amplitude sine- or random-phase harmonic components of a 100- or 200-Hz fundamental frequency (f0) were presented dichotically, with even and odd components to opposite ears, or diotically, with all harmonics presented to both ears. Experiment 1 measured performance in discriminating a 3.5%-5% frequency difference between a component of a harmonic complex and a pure tone in isolation. Listeners achieved at least 75% correct for approximately the first 10 and 20 individual harmonics in the diotic and dichotic conditions, respectively, verifying that only processes before the binaural combination of information limit frequency selectivity. Experiment 2 measured fundamental frequency difference limens (f0 DLs) as a function of the average lowest harmonic number. Similar results at both f0's provide further evidence that harmonic number, not absolute frequency, underlies the order-of-magnitude increase observed in f0 DLs when only harmonics above about the 10th are presented. Similar results under diotic and dichotic conditions indicate that the auditory system, in performing f0 discrimination, is unable to utilize the additional peripherally resolved harmonics in the dichotic case. In experiment 3, dichotic complexes containing harmonics below the 12th, or only above the 15th, elicited pitches of the f0 and twice the f0, respectively. Together, experiments 2 and 3 suggest that harmonic number, regardless of peripheral resolvability, governs the transition between two different pitch percepts, one based on the frequencies of individual resolved harmonics and the other based on the periodicity of the temporal envelope.  相似文献

The paper by Kruse et al. published in this issue of Applied Physics A claims that cells isolated from pancreas of adult rats or humans can generate cells of multiple lineages. To convincingly show transdifferentiation of adult stem cells across lineage boundaries requires stringent experimental criteria such as clonal analyses. The data provided by Kruse et al. fall short of such standards and the conclusion that multipotential cells were isolated is unconvinving.  相似文献

This paper discusses a possible resolution of the nonobjectivity-nonlocality dilemma in quantum mechanics in the light of experimental tests of the Bell inequality for two entangled photons and a Bell-like inequality for a single neutron. My conclusion is that these experiments show that quantum mechanics is nonobjective: that is, the values of physical observables cannot be assigned to a system before measurement. Bell’s assumption of nonlocality has to be rejected as having no direct experimental confirmation, at least thus far. I also consider the relationships between nonobjectivity and contextuality. Specifically, I analyze the impact of the Kochen-Specker theorem on the problem of contextuality of quantum observables. I argue that, just as von Neumann’s “no-go” theorem, the Kochen-Specker theorem is based on assumptions that do not correspond to the real physical situation. Finally, I present a theory of measurement based on a classical, purely wave model (pre-quantum classical statistical field theory), a model that reproduces quantum probabilities. In this model continuous fields are transformed into discrete clicks of detectors. While this model is classical, it is nonobjective. In this case, nonobjectivity is the result of the dependence of experimental outcomes on the context of measurement, in accordance with Bohr’s view.  相似文献

Iterations on R given by quasiperiodic displacement are closely linked with the quasiperiodic forcing of an oscillator. We begin by recalling how these problems are related. It enables us to predict the possibility of appearance of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) for simple increasing maps of the real line with quasiperiodic displacement. Chaos is not possible in this case (Lyapounov exponents cannot be positive). Studying this model of iterations on R for larger variations, beyond critical values where it is no longer invertible, we can get chaotic motions. In this situation we can get a lot of strange attractors because we are able to smoothly adjust the value of the Lyapounov exponent. The SNAs obtained can be viewed as the result of pasting pieces of trajectories, some of which having positive local Lyapounov exponents and others having negative ones. This leads us to think that the distinction between these SNAs and chaotic attractors is rather weak.  相似文献
