The production of charged hadrons with high pT in αα collisions at √s=126 GeV and pp collisions at √s=31 and 63 GeV is compared, and the structure of the events associated with the high-pT particles is studied. The probability of finding associated particles close to the trigger particle increases strongly between √s=31 and 63 GeV for pp collisions. For pT>2.5GeV/c the αα/pp cross section ratio at the same energy per nucleon is measured to be 18.7 ± 2.0, to be compared with A2 = 16, and a higher associated multiplicity is observed for αα.  相似文献

Experimental data from inclusive production of large pT hadronsin high-energy proton-nucleus collisions are analysed with emphasis on the influence of the size of the target nucleus. It is found that data at pT?3 GeV/c are consistent with the hypothesis that the incoming proton collides “simultaneously” with all the nucleons in its way, resulting in an effective collision energy larger than the one expected in a single proton-nucleon hit. At pT > 3 GeV/c, data are in conflict with such a simple model, a result we think is a consequence of the dominance of hard parton collisions at very large pT.  相似文献

Results are presented from a calorimeter study on the production of jets in large-ET proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c. Jet-like large-pT events from eight nuclear targets are seen with a special jet trigger. As previously observed, the cross section for such events increases slightly faster than the atomic number, much like in the production of large-pT single hadrons. Data on energy flows and multiplicities suggest that a heavy nucleus does not significantly widen the angular distribution of the beam remmants. In the central region the particle flow in hard nuclear collisions is similar to that in soft nuclear collisions.  相似文献

Direct production of single electrons in proton-nucleus collisions at 13 GeV/c has been measured. A rising eπ ratio with decreasing pT above the 10?4 level is observed for low pT single electrons. The source of the rising eπ ratio at low eπ ratio at low pT is discussed in connection with the low mass dielectron continuum below the ? mass region.  相似文献

A J/ψ meson is mainly formed by gluon fusion for 200 GeV pp collisions. In reactions with nuclei the gluons (g) scatter off other nucleons (N) before fusing to a J/ψ, which thenshows additional transverse momentum pT. Fitting the value of the parameter σgNp2TgN to describe the gluon multiple scattering effect in proton-nucleus data, we can reproduce the pT distribution of J/ψ production in 200 GeV/A nucleus-nucleus collisions. The origin of the pT distribution is traced to soft gluon radiation via the Sudakov form factor.  相似文献

Inclusive cross sections for protons emitted in 100 GeV proton-nucleus collisions are used to estimate the stopping power of nuclear matter for fast nucleons. The typical recoil momentum obtained for a nucleon struck by the center of a lead nucleus is 4–10 GeV/c, an order of magnitude greater than in p-p collisions, and an order of magnitude smaller than in a naive cascade model. Possible implications for high energy heavy ion collisions are discussed.  相似文献

The data on inclusive momentum spectra of π± mesons produced in p + A collisions over the range p L =15–65 GeV/c and θ lab = 159° at U70 are analyzed in the framework of z-scaling approach. Self-similarity of the pion production in the low-p T cumualtive region is verified. Scaling function ψ(z) for Be, C, Al, Ti, Mo, W nuclei is constructed. It is expressed via the invariant cross section and the average multiplicity density of charged particles. Results of the analysis are compared with data obtained by J. Cronin, R. Sulyaev, and D. Jaffe groups at p L = 70, 400 GeV/c, p T > 1 GeV/c and θ cms ? 90°. A microscopic scenario of p + A interactions in terms of momentum fractions x 1, x 2 is discussed. Indication on self-similarity of the low-p T cumulative pion production in p + A collisions was found. Universality of the shape of the scaling function is used to predict inclusive cross sections of π+ and π? pions produced in p + A collisions on Be, C, Al, Ti, Mo, W targets in the deep-cumulative region (x 2 ? 1/A).  相似文献

Data are reported on the distributions in longitudinal and transverse momentum of protons produced in the range 0.5 < x < 1.0 (x = Feynman variable) and 0.2 < pT2 < 1.8 (GeV/c)2 in proton-proton collisions at 31 GeV c.m. energy at the CERN ISR. The invariant inelastic cross section shows a peak at high longitudinal momenta. The shape of this peak suggests substantial production of states with masses up to at least 7 GeV.  相似文献

We have measured the production of direct photons, π0's, and η's in pp and pp collisions at √s=53 GeV in the range 2≈pT≈6 GeV/c for the central rapidity region |y| 0.4. No statistically significant difference between pp? and pp interactions is observed.  相似文献

We have measured direct photon production in pp collisions at the CERN intersecting storage rings for c.m. energies 31 < √s < 63 GeV and transverse momenta up to 9GeV/c, using segmented lead/liquid-argon calorimeters. The ratio of direct photon to π0 production is significantly larger than zero, starting at pT ≈ 4 GeV/c and increasing to values of about 0.4 at 9GeV/c. The rather large cross section reported for Λc production at ISR energy suggests that cross sections for the production of heavier quarks at collider energy could be important. It is then advocated that an interesting kinematical region for the search for leptons associated with t quark formation is pT > 5 GeV/c, θ ≈ 20–30°.  相似文献

Differential cross sections of single particles and multiparticle systems produced in K?p interactions at 110 GeV/c are presented. At large values of transverse momentum (p) we find the multiparticle cross section to be an order of magnitude larger than that for single particles. This and other features of our data are consistent with results obtained at 200 GeV/c, that have been interpreted as evidence of a new dynamical mechanism in hadron-hadron interactions. However, similar features are observed in a K?p experiment at 16 GeV/c.  相似文献

The cross sections for Ξ? and Ω? inclusive production in Ξ? Be collisions at 116 GeV/c have been measured in the kinematic domain [0.1<x F <0.9, 0<p T <1.7 GeV/c]. The integrated cross sections per nucleon are found to be about twice as large as in Ξ? p collisions. The invariant cross sections increase by a factor of 70 for the Ξ? s and of 100 for the Ω? s between the central region (x F ~0.2) and the projectile fragmentation region (x F ~0.8). In the central region, they have about the same magnitude as the ones for Ξ? and Ω? inclusive production inp nucleon collisions. The Ξ? and Ω? polarisations have been measured over the same kinematic domain and are found to be compatible with zero.  相似文献

We present a study of the transverse momentum spectrum of π0's produced at c.m. angles θ = 90° and 53° in pp collisions at √s = 23.6, 30.8, 45.1, 53.2, and 62.9 GeV. The experiment was performed with a lead-glass detector. The data can be described with the usual parametrization pT?n?;(xT, θ), with n = 7.2 ± 0.2. Comparison between the 90° and 53° data further indicates no appreciable dependence on θ, at least for xT < 0.3. Two-particle inclusive cross sections for π0's produced alongside are also presented. They are observed to have a dependence upon the transverse momentum of the dipion similar to that of single-particle cross sections and with the same value of n. Two-photon decays of η mesons are observed between 3 and 4 GeV/c transverse momentum with a production cross section half of that of π0.  相似文献

Muons of high transverse momentum pμT have been observed in the large drift chambers surrounding the UA1 detector at the CERN 540 GeV pp? collider. For an integrated luminosity of 108 nb?1, 14 isolated muons have been found with pT > 15 GeV/c. They are correlated with a large imbalance in total transverse energy, and show a kinematic behaviour consistent with the muonic decay of the Intermediate Vector Boson W± of weak interactions. The partial cross section is in agreement with previous measurements for electronic decays and with muon-electron universality. The W mass is determined to be mW = 81+6?7 GeV/c2.  相似文献

We present a dynamical study ofK + production in proton-nucleus collisions from 1.2 to 2.5 GeV bombarding energy. The evolution of the proton-nucleus collision is described by a transport equation of the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck type. We incorporate all known sources forK + production and study their momentum and angular distributions, and the excitation function. We show that at lower energies (E b<1.5 GeV) theNΔ andNN* channels dominate the kaon yield for light systems. At higher bombarding energies the directNN channel accounts for almost the whole cross section.  相似文献

We have searched for an almost stable, charged particle produced in 400 GeV proton-nucleus collisions. A total of 5 × 1010 light secondary particles were sampled in a secondary beam of 70 GeV/c momentum. If a 4.5 to 6.0 GeV mass particle is produced with a cross section comparable with the production cross section of the upsilon then this experiment places an upper limit on the lifetime of such a particle of about 5 × 10?8 s.  相似文献

4He-p collisions at two values of4He momenta 8.6 GeV/c and 13.6 GeV/c as well as the3He-p collisions at 13.5 GeV/c have been studies using the one-meter JINR hydrogen bubble chamber. Total, elastic, topological and reaction cross sections have been measured. The cross sections have been determined on a sample of minimum biased events.  相似文献
