Suppose a smooth curve is a set-theoretic complete intersection of two surfaces and with the multiplicity of along less than or equal to the multiplicity of along . One obtains a relation between the degrees of , and , the genus of , and the multiplicity of along in case has only ordinary singularities. One obtains (in the characteristic zero case) that a nonsingular rational curve of degree 4 in is not set-theoretically an intersection of 2 surfaces, provided one of them has at most ordinary singularities. The same result holds for a general nonsingular rational curve of degree .

We generalize a number of results in the literature by proving the following theorem: Let be a semiprime ring, a nonzero derivation of , a nonzero left ideal of , and let . If for some positive integers , and all , the identity holds, then either or else the ideal of generated by and is in the center of . In particular, when is a prime ring, is commutative.

In this paper, we give equivalent conditions for to be a product of distinct simple -primary integrally closed ideals (i.e., , where are distinct simple -primary integrally closed ideals of ) in terms of the regularity of for all and in terms of how to choose a minimal generating set for over its minimal reductions.

We prove the following theorems:

Theorem 1. Let be an -dimensional hereditarily indecomposable continuum. Then there exist -dimensional hereditarily indecomposable continua and monotone maps such that is an embedding and the space of all subcontinua of is embeddable in by .

Theorem 2. For every open monotone map with non-trivial sufficiently small fibers on a finite dimensional hereditarily indecomposable continuum with there exists a -dimensional subcontinuum such that and the restriction of to is also monotone and open.

The connection between these theorems and other results in Hyperspace theory is studied.

A well known result of Privalov asserts that if is a function which is analytic in the unit disc , then has a continuous extension to the closed unit disc and its boundary function is absolutely continuous if and only if belongs to the Hardy space . In this paper we prove that this result is sharp in a very strong sense. Indeed, if, as usual, we prove that for any positive continuous function defined in with , as , there exists a function analytic in which is not a normal function and with the property that , for all sufficiently close to .

The main result of this paper is that every nonreflexive subspace of fails the fixed point property for closed, bounded, convex subsets of and nonexpansive (or contractive) mappings on . Combined with a theorem of Maurey we get that for subspaces of , is reflexive if and only if has the fixed point property. For general Banach spaces the question as to whether reflexivity implies the fixed point property and the converse question are both still open.

We prove if is a complete Riemannian manifold with an embedded totally geodesic compact hypersurface such that has nonnegative sectional curvature, and the sectional curvature of is strictly positive in a neighborhood of , then the pair is diffeomorphic to the pair . This result gives an affirmative answer to a question of H. Wu in the case when is compact and simply connected.
