Gold and lead clusters were grown by the evaporation of metal atoms on rare gas layers on Au(111) and Pb(111). The growth was investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). We studied the electronic coupling to the surface and charging effects in the photoemission process. For a rare gas film thickness of 60 ML we observed an electronic decoupling: the cluster spectra are no longer referenced to the Fermi edge, but to the vacuum energy of the substrate. For Pb clusters on a Au(111) substrate this leads to the remarkable result of a cluster-photoelectron signal above the Fermi energy defined by the ground level of the sample holder. The existence of highly spin polarized photoelectrons emitted from non-magnetic solids as well as from unpolarized atoms and molecules has been found to be very common in many studies over the past 40 years. This so-called Fano effect is based upon the influence of the spin-orbit interaction in the photoionization or the photoemission process. In a non-angle-resolved photoemission experiment, circularly polarized radiation has to be used to create spin polarized photoelectrons, while in angle-resolved photoemission even unpolarized or linearly polarized radiation is sufficient to get a high spin polarization. In past years the Rashba effect has become very important in the angle-resolved photoemission of solid surfaces, also with an observed high photoelectron spin polarization. It is the purpose of the present topical review to cross-compare the spin polarization experimentally found in angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy of condensed matter with that of free atoms, to compare it with the Rashba effect and topological insulators to describe the influence and the importance of the spin-orbit interaction and to show and disentangle the matrix element and phase shift effects therein.The relationship between the energy dispersion of these phase shifts and the emission delay of photoelectron emission in attosecond-resolved photoemission is also discussed. Furthermore the influence of chiral structures of the photo-effect target on the spin polarization, the interferences of different spin components in coherent superpositions in photoemission and a cross-comparison of spin polarization in photoemission from non-magnetic solids with XMCD on magnetic materials are presented; these are all based upon the influence of the spin-orbit interaction in angle-resolved photoemission.  相似文献

By focussing a commercial dye laser pumped with a XeCl excimer laser into phase matched Xe-A or Kr-A gas mixtures, radiation at the third-harmonic frequency has been generated in the wavelength regions: 1142–1165, 1178–1186, 1203–1224, and 1268–1290 Å. VUV powers up to about 200 W have been detected by a calibrated Au-photodiode. The vacuum uv radiation has been used for the fluorescence excitation of H and C atoms produced by thermal dissociation or by a gas discharge. Absolute densities have been derived by a comparison of fluorescence intensities with intensities from Rayleigh scattering in argon. As a further application, velocity distributions of C atoms sputtered from a graphite target by 1.5 keV argon ions have been measured. These data are in good agreement with a Thompson distribution corresponding to a surface energy of 8.2 eV.  相似文献

Using synchrotron radiation from the VUV ring at NSLS and vacuum ultraviolet radiation from a HeI resonance lamp, we have recorded high resolution photoemission spectra of K and Cs overlayers on Ru(001). It is found that for “thin” multilayer coverages ( 3 ML) the K3p and Cs5p core levels exhibit three sets of core levels which can be assigned to interface, “bulkrd and surface emission in increasing binding energy. The results are discussed in terms of the nature of electronic interaction and a thermodynamic model. The K3p core level spin-orbit splitting is also resolved in these measurements for K in the condensed phase, for the first time with photoemission spectroscopy.  相似文献

We have identified, by means of synchrotron radiation X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, several core-level shifted components in the Si-2p photoemission core level peak from a thin yttrium silicide layer epitaxially grown on a Si(1 1 1) surface. We have unequivocally assigned these components to different environments of the Si atoms in the silicide structure. This information has been used to monitor a surface oxidation process promoted by room temperature oxygen adsorption, identifying the final product of this reaction as a silicate-type ternary compound.  相似文献

The photoemission charging of dust particles under ultraviolet radiation from a xenon lamp has been investigated. The velocities of yttrium dust particles with a work function of 3.3 eV and their charges have been determined experimentally; the latter are about 400–500 and about 100 elementary charges per micron of radius for the positively and negatively charged fractions, respectively. The dust particle charging and the dust cloud evolution in a photoemission cell after exposure to an ultraviolet radiation source under the applied voltage have been simulated numerically. The photoemission charging of dust particles has been calculated on the basis of nonlocal and local charging models. Only unipolar particle charging is shown to take place in a system of polydisperse dust particles with the same photoemission efficiency. It has been established that bipolar charging is possible in the case of monodisperse particles with different quantum efficiencies. Polydispersity in this case facilitates the appearance of oppositely charged particles in a photoemission plasma.  相似文献

The valence-band interaction at the polycrystalline Al–Sn interface was investigated by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. Al thin films were deposited on the Sn polycrystalline thick film by the vacuum evaporation technique. Only at small thicknesses of the Al film (less than 1.0?nm), two decreased and two increased regions of intensity were recognized in ultraviolet photoemission spectra. This phenomenon was explained by assuming that valence-band interorbital interaction between Al and Sn formed bonding and antibonding orbitals (bands) below the Fermi level. The interorbital interaction was first observed in s, p metal systems, although it has been reported in d-metal systems such as Au–Ru and Cu–Ru. The three systems, Al–Sn, Au–Ru and Cu–Ru, have a common nature in the thermodynamic phase relation; that is, they do not easily form a solid solution but form a mixture of two solid phases at room temperature. These experimental data suggest the hypothesis that the repulsive interaction between two elements in eutectic binary systems comes from such interorbital interaction.  相似文献

Contact angle measurements in controlled atmospheres must take into account the effect of residual gas molecules in the less-than-perfect vacuum that is encountered experimentally and of the gas molecules formed by vaporization of the liquid component. The possibility of measuring the contact angle of a non-vaporizing liquid has been considered. In an experiment with a low-melting lead bismuth alloy on glass, the contact angle at 142°C was 136°. Calculations based on the Fowkes theory of dispersion forces indicate that the contact angle should not exceed 141°. In contrast to the reasonable agreement with the Fowkes theory, the observed angle is lower than would be expected from the Yarnold-Mason theory as it would apply to a competition between residual gas molecules and metal atoms for the solid surface and the effect of this competition on the contact angle. Finally, the theory of works of adhesion and cohesion is applied to the known variability of the hydrophilicity of graphite surfaces. The known reactivity of adsorbed water with graphite makes it impossible to apply an exact theory, but a limiting value of 53 % hydrophilic surface is indicated for graphite at room temperature.  相似文献

The thermal dissociation of molecular CO adsorbed on the Mo(001) surface has been studied using ultraviolet photoemission methods. Results derived from isothermal measurements indicate that the conversion to atomic β-CO does not obey simple first order kinetics. The observed rate behavior can be explained, however, by an activation energy which increases with adsorbate coverage from a value of 0.60 eV near half coverage. Adsorbate-induced rearrangement of Mo atoms may be responsible for the coverage-dependent changes in the reaction rate.  相似文献

介绍了空间环境条件下真空紫外辐照 (VUV)的损伤效应 ,以及真空紫外辐照模拟的几种主要形式。着重讲述了射流式真空紫外辐照模拟设备的基本结构、工作原理、技术参数及特点 ,并利用该设备初步研究了几种空间材料的真空紫外辐照损伤效应。结果表明 ,VUV使EP和CF/EP产生了明显的质损 ,导致力学性能下降 ,纤维和基体表面受到明显破坏。VUV与温度交变对聚酰亚胺吸光涂层的力学性能有明显影响。  相似文献

The electronic structure of ultrathin Ba/n-AlGaN(0001) interfaces has been investigated in situ in an ultra-high vacuum by the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy method. The photoemission spectra from the n-AlGaN valence band and the spectra of the core levels Ga 3d, Al 2p, and Ba 4d have been studied under synchrotron excitation with photon energies of 60–400 eV. The modification of the spectra in the process of the formation of the Ba/n-AlGaN interface in the mode of the Ba submonolayer coverages has been revealed. It has been found that a decrease in the intensity in some spectral regions of the valence band is attributed to the interaction of the surface states of the AlGaN substrate with the Ba adatoms. It has been revealed that the interface formation results in the appearance of a new photoemission peak of the quasimetallic character at the Fermi level in the AlGaN bandgap. It has been established that the peak is due to the formation of the degenerate electron gas in the accumulation nanolayer induced by adsorption near the n-AlGaN surface.  相似文献

The effects of vacuum ultraviolet radiation on the adsorbed copper center molecule bis(4-cyano-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)copper(II) (or Cu(CNdpm)2), (C24H36N2O4Cu, Cu(II)) was studied by photoemission spectroscopy. Changes in the ultraviolet photoemission spectra (UPS) of Cu(CNdpm)2, adsorbed on Co(1 1 1), indicate that the ultraviolet radiation leads to decomposition of Cu(CNdpm)2 and this decomposition is initially dominated by loss of peripheral hydrogen.  相似文献

We observed high-order 2- to 4-photon photoemission and above threshold photoemission (ATP) processes with 3.07 eV light from the Cu(001) surface. The intensity of 3-photon photoemission via excitation through the n = 1 image potential state significantly exceeded that of the 2-photon process. The ATP occurs either via single photon transitions from the image potential resonances above the vacuum level or by multiphoton transitions from image potential states below the vacuum level. The experimental ratio of the m- to (m + 1)-photon process yields is sensitive to the electronic band structure of the solid.  相似文献

We study the electronic structure of Mott-Hubbard systems SrVO3 and CaVO3 with bulk and surface-sensitive high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy, using a vacuum ultraviolet laser, synchrotron radiation, and a discharge lamp (hv = 7-21 eV). A systematic suppression of the density of states (DOS) within approximately 0.2 eV of the Fermi level (EF) is found on decreasing photon energy, i.e., on increasing bulk sensitivity. The coherent band in SrVO3 and CaVO3 is shown to consist of surface and bulk-derived features, separated in energy. The stronger distortion on surface of CaVO3 compared to SrVO3 leads to a higher surface metallicity in the coherent DOS at EF, consistent with recent theory.  相似文献

We have measured the photoelectron spin polarization emitted by unpolarized UV radiation from the valence-bands of the well ordered Pt(0 0 1)-(5 × 1) surface and the disordered surface destroyed by Ar ions bombardment. Almost identical spin polarizations have been observed in both cases. This observation suggests that the electron spin polarization in photoemission caused by unpolarized light is determined by a short-range order of atoms. This finding has an obvious implication that the electron spin polarization in photoemission caused by unpolarized light can be used to study the bulk electronic structure of the nonmagnetic materials.  相似文献

We report the first observation of the laser-assisted photoelectric effect from a solid surface. By illuminating a Pt(111) sample simultaneously with ultrashort 1.6 eV and 42 eV pulses, we observe sidebands in the extreme ultraviolet photoemission spectrum. The magnitude of these sidebands as a function of time delay between the laser and extreme ultraviolet pulses represents a cross-correlation measurement of the extreme ultraviolet pulse. This effect promises to be useful to extend extreme ultraviolet pulse duration measurements to higher photon energies, as well as opening up femtosecond-to-attosecond time-scale electron dynamics in solid and surface-adsorbate systems.  相似文献

We found, by correlating band bending, ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, and partial yield spectroscopy measurements, that Fermi level pinning at midgap of n-type GaAs(110) is caused by extrinsic states. The exact nature of these states is not yet clear, but the surfaces with Fermi level pinning were strained as evidence by a smeared valence band emission. This smearing was removed by as little as one oxygen per 104 to 105 surface atoms. This implies that the oxygen has very long range effects in causing spontanesous but small rearrangement of the surface lattice and removing surface strains. When about 5% of a monolayer of oxygen is adsorbed, a major change in the electronic structure takes place. Again, the oxygen coverage is very small, which suggests long range effects now leading to a fairly large rearrrangement of the surface lattice. Finally, from comparing the oxygen induced emission for exposures greater than 107 L O2, with the spectra from gas photoemission measurements on molecular oxygen, we suggest that the oxygen is chemisorbed as a molecule on the (110) surface of GaAs.  相似文献

The transition radiation (TR) of an electron in the vacuum ultraviolet range near the direction of total quantum reflection from the medium-vacuum interface has been investigated. The effect of a substantial increase (tens times) in the TR angular density has been predicted. The substantial dependence of lightness of this effect on the susceptibility of the dielectric target, the exit angle, and the energy of the emitting electron has been found.  相似文献
