We investigate the minigaps of the dispersion relation of plasmon polaritons that propagate at the interface between a corrugated semiconductor film and a binary metallic superlattice. Minima of the reflectivity for p-polarized light are calculated and their frequencies are used to obtain the ‘optical’ dispersion relations which are compared with the corresponding electromagnetic dispersion curves, in the effective medium theory. Results show that the minigap enlarges with the corrugation strength.  相似文献

The optical properties of a gold film deposited on a quartz substrate with periodic grooves were investigated theoretically. The main peculiarities of the spectra are due to the excitation of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). It is shown that the empty lattice approximation (ELA) for the SPPs is well applicable for the structure of interest. Two different approaches for deriving the air-gold SPP dispersion curves are compared. Our special attention is focused on the wavelength region approaching the d-band in gold, where the dielectric function is of a strongly non-Drude-type.  相似文献

The present paper attempts to investigate the effect of sandiness, corrugated boundary surfaces, heterogeneity, and gravity on phase velocity and attenuation of SH-wave propagating in a viscous sandy layer with corrugated upper and lower boundary surfaces sandwiched between an upper heterogeneous elastic half-space and lower viscoelastic half-space under gravity. Heterogeneity associated with the upper half-space is due to exponentially varying density which is a function of depth; but the rigidity is constant. The closed form of dispersion relation is established and found to be in complex form. Real part and imaginary part of the dispersion relation correspond to dispersion curve and attenuation curve, respectively. One of the salient points of present study is the use of DEBYE asymptotic expansion to establish that the obtained dispersion relation is in well-agreement with the classical Love wave equation in isotropic case. The effect of presence and absence of corrugated boundary surfaces, measured by initial flatness parameter, on dispersion and attenuation curves have been meticulously examined. Moreover, the substantial effect of heterogeneity, sandiness, internal friction, and Biot’s gravity parameter on phase velocity and attenuation coefficient of SH-wave has been studied and demonstrated by means of graphical illustration and numerical computations.  相似文献

通过在金属表面刻成浅的垂直凹槽,并在槽内填充不同的介质,对金属表面浅槽周期结构上传播的表面等离子体激元的色散特性与填充介质的关系进行了研究.研究表明通过在周期凹槽内填充介质可以有效降低人工表面等离子体激元的渐近频率,并增强金属表面对电磁场的约束.分析了太赫兹波段金属的吸收损耗对人工表面等离子体激元特性的影响,结果显示基于填充介质的浅槽周期表面结构可以获得长距离传输以及场的亚波长约束.通过对波传输的数值仿真,验证了该表面结构在太赫兹波段良好的导波能力.这种表面结构对太赫兹波段新型集成导波器件的设计具有参考价值.  相似文献

We present time-domain measurements of terahertz surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating on gratings structured on silicon surfaces. Using single-cycle pulses of terahertz radiation to excite SPPs in a broad frequency range, we observe that the efficient SPPs scattering on the semiconductor periodic structure introduces significant dispersion and modifies the SPPs propagation. A stop gap, or a frequency range where SPPs are Bragg reflected, is formed by the structure. This gap depends strongly on the Si doping density and type. The resonant scattering at the edge of the gap reduces the group velocity by more than a factor of 2. The measurements show a good agreement with our numerical calculations based on the reduced Rayleigh equation.  相似文献

Propagation characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the lamellar heterostructure, which is actually a SPP waveguide array, constructed by two kinds of single negative (SNG) material layers stacked alternatively are investigated. Based on the finite element method (FEM), the negative-refraction (NR) property is demonstrated when the electromagnetic wave penetrates through free space into such SNG lamellar structure. A clear view of the underlying physics of NR is presented qualitatively that is mainly related to the coupled SPPs. The strong coupling effect leads to the novel SPP dispersion curves and then the anomalous propagation characteristics.  相似文献

Co double layer film (CoDLF) consisting of a disk-array layer and an antidot-array layer, both with square order, was investigated. Both the reflectivity and Kerr spectra of CoDLF show anisotropic effects when the azimuthal angle of incident light changes. From the simulation result of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), we attribute the reflectivity minima and Kerr angle maxima in the spectra mainly to the excitation of different diffractional orders' SPPs. More interestingly, the Kerr angle changes sign at specific wavelengths. We attribute these phenomena to the excitation of SPPs and localized surface plasmons (LSPs), and the interaction between them.  相似文献

Surface plasmon polaritons' (SPPs') frequency blue shift is observed in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of parallel electron excitation Au bulk structure. Comparing with cold dispersion of SPPs, an obvious frequency blue shift is obtained in low confinement region excitation simulation results. Then, according to SPPs' transverse attenuation characteristics, the excited frequency mode instead of cold dispersion corresponding frequency mode matches it. Thence, this excited mode is confirmed to be SPPs' mode. As is well known the lower the frequency, the smaller the confinement factor is and the lower the excitation efficiency, the wider the bandwidth of excited SPPs is. And considering the attenuation in whole structure, the excited surface field contains attenuation signal. In a low confinement factor region, the higher the SPPs' frequency, the higher the excitation efficiency is, while broadband frequency information obtained in attenuation signal provides high frequency information in stimulation signal. Thence, in the beam-wave interaction, as the signal oscillation time increases, the frequency of the oscillation field gradually increases. Thus, compared with cold dispersion, the frequency of excited SPP is blueshifted This hypothesis is verified by monitoring the time domain signal of excited field in low and high confinement factor regions and comparing them. Then, this frequency-blue shift is confirmed to have commonality of SPPs, which is independent of SPPs' material and structure. Finally, this frequency-blue shift is confirmed in an attenuated total reflection (ATR) experiment. Owing to frequency dependence of most of SPPs' devices, such as coherent enhancement radiation and enhancement transmission devices, the frequency-blue shift presented here is of great influence in the SPPs applications.  相似文献

The analytic surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) dispersion relation is studied in a system consisting of a thin metallic film bounded by two sides media of nonlinear dielectric of arbitrary nonlinearity is studied by applying a generalised first integral approach.We consider both asymmetric and symmetric structures.Especially,in the symmetric system,two possible modes can exist:the odd mode and the even mode.The dispersion relations of the two modes are obtained.Due to the nonlinear dielectric,the magnitude of the electric field at the interface appears and alters the dispersion relations.The changes in SPPs dispersion relations depending on film thicknesses and nonlinearity are studied.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the control of surface plasmon polariton(SPP) generated at the interface of dielectric and graphene medium under Kerr nonlinearity. The controlled Kerr nonlinear signal of probe light beam in a dielectric medium is used to generate SPPs at the interface of dielectric and graphene medium. The positive, negative absorption, and dispersion properties of SPPs are modified and controlled by the control and Kerr fields. A large amplification(negative absorption) is noted for SPPs under the Kerr nonlinearity. The normal/anomalous slope of dispersion and propagation length of SPPs is modified and controlled with Kerr nonlinearity. This leads to significant variation in slow and fast SPP propagation. The controlled slow and fast SPP propagation may predict significant applications in nano-photonics, optical tweezers, photovoltaic devices, plasmonster, and sensing technology.  相似文献

The p and s-polarized surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) of symmetric and asymmetric slabs formed arbitrarily by four types of conventional materials: dielectrics, negative dielectric permittivity materials, negative magnetic permeability materials, and left-handed materials are comprehensively analysed. The existence regions, dispersion relations, and excitation of SPPs in different frequency regions are investigated in detail. For symmetric slabs, the numbers and the frequency positions of surface polariton branches are quite different. At the same time, the pairs of the p or s-polarized SPP branches occur in the same frequency range. For asymmetric slabs, the SPP branches in mid- and high-frequency ranges are greatly different. In addition, the slab thickness has a great effect on SPPs of asymmetric and symmetric slabs. The attenuated total reflection spectra for the cases of p and s polarizations in these slabs are also calculated.  相似文献

In this Letter, we show how the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along a perfectly conducting wire can be tailored by corrugating its surface with a periodic array of radial grooves. In this way, highly localized SPPs can be sustained in the terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Importantly, the propagation characteristics of these spoof SPPs can be controlled by the surface geometry, opening the way to important applications such as energy concentration on cylindrical wires and superfocusing using conical structures.  相似文献

We report the experimental and theoretical study of the dispersive behavior of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on cylindrical metal surfaces in the terahertz frequency range. Time-domain measurements of terahertz SPPs propagating on metal wires reveal a unique structure that is inconsistent with a simple extrapolation of the high frequency portion of the dispersion diagram for SPPs on a planar metal surface, and also distinct from that of SPPs on metal nanowires observed at visible and near-infrared frequencies. The results are consistent with a numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, showing that the dispersive behavior of SPPs on a cylindrical metal surface at terahertz frequencies is quite different from that of SPPs on a flat surface. These findings indicate the increasing importance of skin effects for SPPs in the terahertz range, as well as the enhancement of such effects on curved surfaces.  相似文献

The conversion from spatial propagating waves to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) has been well studied, and shown to be very efficient by using gradient‐index metasurfaces. However, feeding energies into and extracting signals from functional plasmonic devices or circuits through transmission lines require the efficient conversion between SPPs and guided waves, which has not been reported, to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, a smooth bridge between the conventional coplanar waveguide (CPW) with 50 Ω impedance and plasmonic waveguide (e.g., an ultrathin corrugated metallic strip) has been proposed in the microwave frequency, which converts the guided waves to spoof SPPs with high efficiency in broadband. A matching transition has been proposed and designed, which is constructed by gradient corrugations and flaring ground, to match both the momentum and impedance of CPW and the plasmonic waveguide. Simulated and measured results on the transmission coefficients and near‐filed distributions show excellent transmission efficiency from CPW to a plasmonic waveguide to CPW in a wide frequency band. The high‐efficiency and broadband conversion between SPPs and guided waves opens up a new avenue for advanced conventional plasmonic integrated functional devices and circuits.  相似文献

We analyse the effect of a superficial plasma layer on the substrate surface plasmon dispersion taking into account non local effects related to plasma oscillations in the surface layer. Surface plasmon dispersion and ATR reflectivity curves for an Aluminium surface covered by a potassium film 20 Å thick are computed. We show that new branches exist when longitudinal polarization waves are considered in the surface layer.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate numerically the characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) sustained by two-dimensional arrays of metallic pillars protruding out of planar metal surfaces at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Various shapes of the pillars are analyzed, and it is shown that the pillar shape only has weak influence on the dispersion of spoof SPPs. However, the loss of spoof SPPs is closely dependent on the pillar shape. It is also shown that spoof SPPs on textured surfaces with pillars can exhibit much better confinement than those on pierced surfaces with holes.  相似文献

We present a comprehensive experimental study of terahertz (THz) wave propagation utilizing surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the interfaces of a thin dielectric core layer sandwiched between two corrugated metallic claddings. THz wave impinges on the structured surfaces at normal incidence. Long-lasting oscillation propagation features are observed in the temporal waveform after traveling through the periodic arrays. The enhanced THz transmission can be achieved due to the coupling between incident waves to SPPs at the bottom and top interfaces. The finite element method is used to simulate the field distribution and the transmission mode in the waveguide. The hybrid waveguide with low absorption has great potential applications in THz integrated devices.  相似文献
