We design a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emulator capable of adjusting first-order (FO-) and second-order (SO-) PMD statistics, making it capable to mimick differerent fibre links or fibre plants. The emulator can adjust PMD statistics by controlling mode coupling angles between polarization maintaining fibres (PMFs) of fixed length using its seven rotatable electro-optic polarization rotators which act as half waveplates (HWPs). The stability and repeatability of the emulator under a stable laboratory environment makes PMD statistics reproducible. The control mechanism of the emulator is in real-time.  相似文献

Low cost statistical PMD/PDL emulator is presented. The emulator was initially designed as a classical PMD emulator. But PDL measurements of the designed emulator show that it can be also used as statistical PDL emulator. The emulator was constructed by concatenating 15 highly birefringence optical fiber segments and randomly varying the mode coupling between them, by rotating the polarization state between them. The achieved numerical and experimental results show that the designed emulator can mimic the polarization effects (PMD and PDL) of a real modern optical fiber link.  相似文献

从光纤的琼斯矩阵模型出发,利用蒙特-卡洛方法对偏振模色散模拟器的统计特性进行了研究.研究结果表明:随着组成模拟器的保偏光纤的段数增加,一阶和二阶偏振模色散的统计分布越接近于理论拟合曲线.比较了两种不同模拟器的组成方法,得到的结果将对模拟器的设计具有实际的指导作用.  相似文献

为了研究光纤通信中的偏振模色散(PMD)及其对高速光通信系统的影响和补偿技术,研制了一种可编程控制的PMD模拟器,它由6组双折射晶体和磁光晶体组成,群时延差(DGD)变化范围为±(0.3~35) ps,可设为不同平均值的Maxwell统计分布随机变化,也可以设为其它要求的数学分布.实验证明,该模拟器测量值与理论符合得很好,且具有较高的重复性和稳定性,响应时间小于1 ms.这种模拟器可用于10 Gb/s和40 Gb/s光传输系统PMD问题的研究.  相似文献

对现有三类偏振模色散模拟器:旋转晶体型、偏振控制器型和加热器型模拟器,进行了详尽的相关群时延、高阶偏振模色散的统计分布和频率自相关函数三大统计特性的数值模拟和性能比较.以级联段数作为主要参量的分析结果表明:相关群时延分布的产生准确度,旋转晶体型模拟器略优于偏振控制器型,而加热型模拟器相对最差;在产生精确的高阶偏振模色散分布方面,偏振控制器型模拟器最为优越,加热型模拟器略优于旋转晶体型;而对于产生较低的频率自相关本底水准方面,加热型模拟器则优于偏振控制器型和旋转晶体型.综合而言,偏振控制器型模拟器的性能最为优越;十段左右的偏振控制器型模拟器就可以产生合格的模拟效果,其效果等价于十五段以上旋转晶体型,或二十段以上加热型模拟器.  相似文献

A new first-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation technique is experimentally demonstrated in a 2.5 Gbit/s optical transmission system. It achieves adaptive compensation over a wide range of differential group delay (DGD) values, since it does not try to compensate it, but to eliminate one of the principal states of polarization by means of a liquid crystal polarization controller and a polarizer. The PMD parameters of the received signal are measured in real time through its spectrum analysis, and used as the feedback signal in a fuzzy logic algorithm controlling the liquid crystal device. The algorithm achieves a response time faster than the PMD variations in real links, also featuring endless operation. Moreover, a deterministic compact PMD emulator has been implemented in order to test the PMD compensator system.  相似文献

通过对微分群时延差(DGD)统计特性和偏振模色散(PMD)矢量自相关函数的数值模拟,分析比较了目前常用的三种PMD模拟器的性能. 结果表明:在DGD分布方面,由DGD发生器构成的模拟器,一个DGD发生器就可与实际光纤PMD的统计特性相符合,而由保偏光纤和可旋转的连接器构成的模拟器则至少需要15段. 在自相关函数方面,基于保偏光纤的模拟器取决于各段光纤的延时量,而基于DGD发生器的模拟器在中心频带外的自相关值很平稳,可视为常数. 关键词: 光纤通信 偏振模色散 偏振模色散模拟器 自相关函数  相似文献

We design a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emulator with fixed second-order polarization mode dispersion (SO-PMD) but varying first-order PMD (FO-PMD). The emulator constitutes of an optical delay line (ODL), a polarization controller (PC) and a fixed number of randomly concatenated polarization maintaining fibre (PMF) segments. An understanding of the SO-PMD equation is the first vital step to consider before designing such an emulator. The control of the differential group delay (DGD) statistics with wavelength proves to be the key measure for this design. Results show that the mean DGD (or the mean magnitude of the FO-PMD vector ()) of the emulator is biased towards the dominant wavelength-independent of the ODL. This is provided the dominant is by far greater than FO-PMD contributions from the other cascaded sections. Experimentally it is shown that when the DGD (Δτ) is wavelength-independent due to the absence of mode coupling, or when the wavelength-dependent DGD spectra do not change with time due to fixed mode coupling, there is negligible influence on the SO-PMD. The PC angle is controlled at an angle θ to ensure that the sub-emulator is always parallel to the ODL . Thus by rotating the mode coupling angle θ, we change the wavelength-dependent DGD spectra thereby ensuring SO-PMD variation.  相似文献

This article presents a new approach to the combined analysis of the first and second-order polarization mode dispersion (SOPMD) and shows their importance in optical communication systems performance. How it affects the relation between second-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and the differential group delay (DGD) in a single mode fiber is discussed. The analysis is based on time or wavelength and temperature variations changing/impacting PMD and DGD measured values. We present long term statistical characteristics of second-order PMD over a PMD emulator, and investigate the correlation between SOPMD, depolarization (DEP) and polarization dependent chromatic dispersion (PCD). Some authors calculate these modes from measurements obtained from the first order polarization mode dispersion, assuming a positive correlation between these effects, but this not the real relationship between them. A new interpretation of SOPMD was used to analyze the problem of the spectral stability in terms of the temperature. Actual techniques for determination SOPMD, consequently DEP and PCD, use the variation in time and/or wavelength. In some studies the results obtained for SOPMD are correlated to first-order PMD (FOPMD). This paper shows, based on measurements, that the correlation between first and second order Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) in the case where the last one is a function of the temperature can assume positive or negative values.  相似文献

This paper reports the DSP-based prototype compensator we have made to compensate the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in fibers. It was tested in one channel of a 40 × 43-Gb/s DWDM DQPSK system, which is the commercial product line, either in the back-to-back case by using a PMD emulator, or in a 1200-km transmission testbed. The prototype showed a good performance under the tests of fast SOP and PSP rotation, DGD jump variation, and moderate knock on the testbed in a period as long as 12 h.  相似文献

The bidirectional reflectance factor and degree of linear polarisation of selected snow, soil, and gravel types have been measured using Finnish geodetic institute field goniospectropolariphotometer (FIGIFIGO). It was observed that with all measured samples the degree of linear polarisation is weakest 0–30 backwards from nadir, turning 1–5% negative in the backward direction, and growing larger (5–50%) in the forward and Brewster directions. Polarisation was found to be inversely but non-linearly proportional to reflectance. In addition, a wavelength-dependent trend was found to exist in some data, but in general, the wavelength dependence was smooth. Dry old snow polarises clearly more than melting snow or new snow. White gravel polarises somewhat similarly to snow in visible region, and black gravel resembles snow in infrared.The authors conclude that polarisation observations may be useful in land surface remote sensing, but that only far-forward angles (60–70) contain a strong enough signal for easy interpretation. The polarisation spectrum brings little additional information to reflection spectrum, but in conditions where the reflectance spectrum cannot be accurately normalised or incident irradiation is not known, polarisation spectrum could still be usable. The directional signal is strong and may yield refractive index or microstructure, and must be understood in any application. Polarisation near nadir is low for all known samples, and can thus be safely ignored with most non-polarised imaging applications. However, for accurate atmospheric polarimetry, e.g. by polarisation and directionality of the earth's reflectances (POLDER) or aerosol polarimetry sensor (APS) sensors, it is recommended to take into account land surface polarisation.  相似文献

The in-depth analyses of polarisation interferometry flying height testing are presented. The drawbacks of the oblique incidence polarisation interferometry method are discussed. The application of the dual-beam normal incidence polarisation interferometry method is illustrated. It is shown that with this normal incidence polarisation interferometer, not only the flying height can be measured down to contact without losing accuracy, but the optical parameters of the head-slider can also be determined.  相似文献

讨论了三阶偏振模色散(PMD)的统计特性及其对于高阶PMD补偿系统的影响.数值模拟结果表明,随着即时差分群时延(DGD)的增加,二阶PMD单位矢量旋转速率的统计覆盖范围的变化趋势与主偏振态(PSP)旋转斜率的相应变化正好相反.此外,随着即时DGD的增加,二阶PMD模值的统计覆盖范围不断增加,使得高速光通信系统中高阶PMD补偿的实现将更加困难.  相似文献

Having a fixed differential-group delay (DGD) term b′ in the coarse-step method results in a repetitive pattern in the autocorrelation function (ACF). We solve this problem by inserting a varying DGD term at each integration step. Furthermore we compute the range of values needed for b′ and simulate the phenomenon of polarisation mode dispersion for different statistical distributions of b′. We examine systematically the modified coarse-step method compared to the analytical model, through our simulation results.  相似文献

Interchannel cross-phase-modulation-induced polarization scattering (XPMIPS) and its effect on the performance of optical polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) systems are studied. The level of XPMIPS in long-haul WDM transmission systems is theoretically quantified, and its effect on optical PMD compensation is evaluated with numerical simulations. We show that in 10-Gbit/s ultra-long-haul dense WDM systems XPMIPS could reduce the PMD compensation efficiency by 50%, whereas for 40-Gbit/s systems the effect of XPMIPS is smaller.  相似文献

Propagation of solitons in optical fibers is studied taking into account the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) effect. We show that the soliton interaction caused by the radiation emitted by solitons due to the PMD disorder leads to soliton jitter, and we find its statistical properties. A novel dual polarization differential quadrature phase shift keying (DP-DQPSK) system is proposed, whose receiver is the same as the single polarization DQPSK system, while it does not need polarization de-multiplexing like the conventional polarization division multiplexing QPSK (PDM-QPSK). Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is mainly considered and PMD compensation for the DP-DQPSK system is studied. As the feedback signal for PMD compensation, the degree of polarization of the signals is discussed in detail. The results show that PMD tolerance can be improved by 89 ps within 1 dB optical signal noise ratio penalty after PMD compensation for the DP-DQPSK system.  相似文献

We report on the experimental investigation carried out in the polarisation characteristics of femtosecond pulsed and continuous wave beams propagating through a 1×2 fibre coupler. It is demonstrated that the polarisation states of pulsed and continuous wave illumination over the broad wavelength range can be preserved in a conventional fused fibre coupler. Furthermore, the fibre coupler acts as a low-pass spectral filter in the visible wavelength range with a splitting ratio between 99.6/0.4 and 99.7/0.3. The result is of importance for fibre-optic second harmonic generation microscopy which requires the polarisation preservation to extract molecular organization of a sample.  相似文献

Non-zero dispersion fiber (NZDF) ribbon cable has recently become a considerable alternative in long-haul high-speed network construction. Since long-distance high-bit rate transmission requires low polarization mode dispersion (PMD), it is very important to know the PMD performance of this type of optical fiber cables. In this paper, we report experimental analysis of effects of the cable design and environmental parameters, in particular ribbon thickness, positions of fibers in the ribbon, flexing and vibration, on PMD performances of several slotted-core fiber ribbon cables. Results show that ribbon thickness and positions of fibers in the ribbon alter the PMD values of NZDF ribbon cables. Also, 23% and 11% PMD variations have been determined in flexing and vibration experiments, respectively. Moreover, it has been observed that vibration amplitude has significant effects and vibration frequency has little effects (14% and 6% variations, respectively) on fiber PMD. Results are important for understanding effects of installation conditions and wind, especially for aerial fibers, on PMD values of cables.  相似文献
