The titration curves of latex dispersions of ethyl acrylate — methacrylic acid copolymers have a rather complex shape which indicates a strong dependence of the apparent dissociation constant of carboxylic groups on the degree of neutralization and copolymer composition. These dependences seem to be related to changes in the macroscopic structure (swelling and disintegration) of dispersion particles during alkalization.  相似文献

The coalescence of latex particles is investigated through small-angle neutron scattering and electron microscopy. The particles are made of a soft polymeric core protected by a hydrophilic membrane, and they are dispersed in water. This dispersion is spread on a substrate, and water is removed to form a dry film. As the membranes of neighboring particles come into contact, they may break up to allow fusion of the particle cores. This is found to occur when the membranes are made of short-chain surfactant molecules; then all hydrophilic material is expelled to the film surface or to large isolated lumps. Alternatively, the membranes may remain until the film is completely dry; this is found to occur when they are made of hydrophilic polymers which are grafted onto the core. Hence, the fusion of particles is controlled by the connectivity of membranes.This work used the neutron beams of ILL in Grenoble and LLB in Saclay  相似文献

It will be shown that low-density polyethylene is a eutectoid copolymer with non-random distribution of branchings along the chains. From a line-profile analysis it is deduced that the crystal-size-distribution is uniquely related with the distribution of branchings thus yielding that basic features of the colloid-structure are controlled by the chemical structure of the macromolecules.  相似文献

The structure factor of a concentrated colloidal suspension is an important means in the characterization of the interaction forces between the colloidal particles. It can, in principle, be determined with small angle x-ray scattering. To avoid unacceptably long measuring times, one has to use a high power x-ray source or a slit collimation camera. The first is not readily accessible because of the very high costs. The latter is available in many laboratories, but here the fundamental information is contained in the data in a complicated way. A so-called desmearing operation is needed to reveal this information. Because of the different experimental errors and their sensitivity to the desmearing, the accuracy of the structure factor will be rather limited. In this paper we simulate the experimental errors separately to check their influence in combination with the desmearing.Although the overall accuracy is limited some important features can be determined. The value atK=0 and thus the osmotic compressibility can be calculated, and the position and the height of the first maximum in the structure factor are quite reliable too. This gives some insight in the type of interaction and the influence of polydispersity.Special attention should be given to the determination of the form factor by using extra long measuring times for the very diluted sample, this will improve the overall accurary.  相似文献

The boundary region separating a latex particle from the surrounding medium has a great influence on the properties of latex dispersions. Four types of polystyrene and polystyrene/comonomer latices differing greatly in the structure of the boundary region were prepared. The first part of a series of papers reports on the preparation of the various latex dispersions. Mean particle sizes were obtained from simple turbidity measurements, quasi-elastic light scattering, and electron micrographs. The behavior of the particles in the centrifugal force field is a simple tool for detecting aggregation tendencies that are not directly related to salt stability. The BET-surface area agrees with the area calculated from the mean particle size when a sharp boundary and smooth surface is developed between the particle and the surrounding medium. In the case of particles with extended boundary regions (core/shell particles or particles with hairy envelopes), film formation reduces the specific surface area. Removal of soluble oligomers and polymers from the boundary region during subsequent treatments (purification and centrifugation before freeze-drying) can increase the surface area considerably.  相似文献

The microemulsion liquid in the system ethylene glycol, sodium dodecyl sulfate, decanol, and toluene was investigated by determination of solubility regions and of light scattering intensity.The system without hydrocarbons showed a critical point which remained in the system during the addition of toluene to high content. No other indications of association structures was formed and the microemulsions should be considered as solutions with critical behavior.  相似文献

The structure factor of a number of silica suspensions in cyclohexane, with concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.714 gcm–3, has been determined with small angle x-ray scattering, using a Kratky camera. The experimental structure factor is compared with a theoretical one for which polydispersity effects on the particle scattering factor and on the structure are explicitly taken into account.Analysis of the scattered intensity at a scattering angle=0 shows that the particles in the suspension interact like hard spheres, with a specific hard sphere volume of 0.61 cm3g–1. A comparison of the experimentally determined structure factor with the structure factor found by a model calculation for a polydisperse system, using the experimental particle size distribution, showed a general agreement. The height of the first maximum agreed well for all concentrations, however its position varied stronger with concentration in the experimental curves. A possible explanation of this effect is given.  相似文献

High-ammonia latex concentrate prepared from doubly-concentrifuged fieldHevea latex was exhaustively dialyzed to remove any residual water-soluble non-rubber constituents. The specially purified latex was then treated with specific chemical reagents to modify the surface ionogenic groupings originally present on the latex particle surface. The electrophoretic mobility of the modified latexes was investigated as a function of pH. The change in electrokinetic properties of the surface-modified latex was explained in terms of chemical modification to the ionogenic groups of the adsorbed layer of proteins and long chain fatty acid soaps on the latex particle surface, the negative charges of which are primarily responsible for the colloidal stability of the latex. For comparison direct extraction of the long-chain fatty acid soaps from the specially purified latex by solvent was also carried out. Present results indicate that the number of carboxyl groups from the adsorbed long-chain fatty acid soaps plays a major role in the stabilization of the latex concentrate. In comparison the contribution of negative charges from the adsorbed proteins towards the stability of the latex is of less importance.  相似文献

Solutions of two different liquid crystalline polymers of high molecular weight are investigated by static and dynamic light scattering (LS), membrane osmometry and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Measurements in dilute solution in different solvents showed no specific behavior as formation of aggregates or chain stiffening. Large discrepancies between the LS results and the results from osmometry and SEC show that the latter methods are in the present cases not suitable for molecular weight determination. In semi-dilute solution the osmotic modulus and the time correlation function were studied. Behavior of flexible chains was observed. In one system a slight aggregation of small molecules onto longer chains was found causing less interpenetration of the chains in that solvent. At moderately high concentrations cluster formation was observed from i) a small angle excess scattering, ii) a downturn of the osmotic modulus, and iii) the appearance of a slow motion in the time-correlation function.  相似文献

The ultracentrifugation method for determining the particle-size distribution of dispersions has been automated and its precision and capacity improved.A mixture of seven monodisperse calibration latices can be analysed and two lattices with a difference in diameter of 10% can be resolved by a base-line separation.This paper was presented at the VI. The effect of temperature on the solubility of ionic surfactants was interpreted in terms of standard enthalpy and entropy of dissolution at reference temperature by considering the change in the heat capacity. The significant value of the latter quantity causes the curvature of the function logarithm of equilibrium constant (or solubility) vs. the reciprocal thermodynamic temperature. The solubility data for several sodium n-alkylsulfonates, published by Saito, Moroi, and Matuura, were interpreted by nonlinear regression analysis. It was found that both the enthalpy and entropy of dissolution decrease with the chain length. The heat capacity increases in the course of the dissolution process.  相似文献

Neutron-scattering studies at small angles are performed on dilute dispersions of small, polydisperse silica spheres coated with polyisobutene in mixtures of h12 and d12-cyclohexane. The contrast variation method is applied to reveal the internal structure of the compound particles. For a detailed interpretation of the scattering curves, it is assumed that the particles consist of spherical silica cores with concentric PIB-layers into which solvent molecules can penetrate. Also the polydispersity of the particle cores is taken into account. Model calculations fit the experimental curves fairly well except for the curves near the matching point, and at higher wavevectors, where experimental errors are relatively large due to the smallness of the scattering of the particles compared to that of the background.  相似文献

Concentrations of phosphate and calcium ions, liberated from the surface of hydroxyapatite (HAP) during the adsorption of phosphoserine (PSer), were determined at 30°C. HAP showed a marked incongruent dissolution behavior in the presence of PSer. That is, the concentration of phosphate ion in solution increases with the addition of PSer due to the ion-exchange between PSer and phosphate ion on HAP (molar ratio of the former to the latter=32), whereas the concentration of calcium ion decreases with this release of phosphate ion, because the solubility product of HAP restricts the concentrations of both ions in solution (calculated values of — log (Ca2+)10 (PO 4 3– )6 (OH)2 were 115.8±1.0). The affinity of PSer to HAP was highest at pH 5.8 where the PSer and the HAP surface had the opposite charges. This electrostatic attraction force between PSer and HAP was shielded to some extent by the addition of KCl.  相似文献

The effects of electric charge interation and particle correlations on suspension rheology are examined. A one-component fluid analysis using a Smoluchowski equation for the equilibrium structure is applied to charged suspensions of spherical colloids under shear. The frequency dependent modulus and viscosity, predicted as functions of particle and added salt concentrations, are compared with published rheological measurements on model suspensions. Recent improvements in the statistical mechanical theories for the equilibrium microstructure, its nonequilibrium deformation, and the bulk shear stresses are included. The direct electrostatic interaction is found to drive the divergence in the shear viscosity near the liquid-solid phase transition. Extensions of the theory predict the elastic modulus of binary mixtures of charged colloids. Estimates of the primary electroviscous effect, hydrodynamic interactions, and errors in the Yukawa limiting form for the potential and applications of asymptotic theories are presented. Predictions for the rheology based on effective hard-sphere models are found to be reasonable when using a parameter fit from the equilibrium phase behavior. Mean-field mode coupling theories predict larger relaxation times than calculated from the Smoluchowski equation (=SE). A study of binary mixing effects on elasticity shows non-ideal behavior. It is noted that equilibrium structural information can be used to resolve discrepancies between the theoretical predictions and the measured rheology.  相似文献

It is now well known that enthalpy relaxation measurements can be used to establish polymer-polymer blend phase behavior when the glass transition temperatures of the two polymers are virtually coincident. In the most simple cases, the aging kinetics of an immiscible blend will be representative of the pure polymers superimposed upon each other. However, in many cases the situation is more complicated because of the presence of interface material. In this paper the relation between enthalpy recovery peak separation, domain size and interface thickness is considered. The discussion is based on relaxation experiments involving di-block copolymers of styrene and 2-vinyl pyridine, blends of polystyrene and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) and blends of poly(vinyl chloride) and poly(isopropyl methacrylate). If the amount of material in the interface is too large due to either a small average domain size or a thick interface no peak separation will occur. The first situation is found for the microphase separated block copolymer system whereas the second possibility occurs for blends of polymers which are on the verge of miscibility like poly(vinyl chloride) and poly(isopropyl methacrylate).Presented in part at the Sixth International Seminar on Polymer Physics Relaxation in Polymers, Gomadingen, October 3–8, 1988, F.R.G.  相似文献

Isotachophoresis and viscometric measurements were performed on aqueous dispersions of non-stoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes in order to elucidate the surface charge situation of the complex particles in dependence on component charge density, ratio of cationic to anionic groups in the complex, and pH and ionic strengths of the ambient medium. Components for complex formation were acryl-based anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes of the pendent type. From our results, an amphoteric character of the polyelectrolyte complex particles can be concluded, with an isoelectric point characterized by zero mobility and a minimum in reduced viscosity spec/c of the particle dispersion, and with the sign of net surface charge depending on ambient pH and component charge density. The influence of ionic strength on the spec/c vs pH plots can be interpreted by assuming a competition between salting-out and electrostatic shielding effects. No correlation could be established between the overall molar ratio of cationic to anionic groups and the isoelectric point of the complex particles, which obviously indicates a different composition of surface and bulk of the polyelectrolyte complex particles.  相似文献

A basic requirement for that type ofL 2-phase which exists in the system sodium octanoate-octanoic acid-water is the formation of acid-soaps. In order for the phase to be formed at all, the temperature must lie above the melting point of the fatty acid so that a reaction in non-aqueous milieu between neutral soap and fatty acid is possible. In order to obtain the characteristic shape and complete extension of the phase in direction of high water content the temperature must be so high that also the hydrated acid-soaps occur in fluid state. On the other hand the temperature cannot be so high that the acid-soaps become unstable.At temperatures at which the phase has obtained its full extension those circumstances differs which in different regions regulate the location of the phase borders; they depend on the composition of the acid soaps and on their amounts. In that part of the phase where the molar ratio between octanoic acid and sodium octanoate lies between 2 and 3 and where one has a continuous transition from reversed to normal structure only the two acid octanoates 1 NaC8 2 HC8 x H2O and 1 NaC8 3 HC8 x H2O occur and both are at 20 °C in fluid state.At water contents from about 22 % to 40 % the hydrate-water molecules belonging to the first mentioned soap are capable of contributing actively to the formation of large aggregates of acid-soap, a process which however is counteracted by the inmixing of the latter acid-soap. This mixture of the two acid-soaps decides in this region where the border of the phase will lie in direction towards an increased content of sodium octanoate; the result is that in spite of the fact that the hydration is increased, the border is only slowly displaced towards a higher content of fatty acid. As soon as the hydration of the acid octanoates has been completed and the additional water occurs as unbound bulkwater, the location of the phase boundary will no longer be influenced by the water content — now it will be the amphiphilic composition of the acid-soaps that determines the location of the border and it remains at the molar ratio 2.5 between octanoic acid and sodium octanoate at water contents from about 40% and up to 82%.In the direction of decreasing content of neutral sodium octanoate and increased content of water theL 2-phase both at the highest content of fatty acid and the highest contents of water will be in equilibrium with the water-richL 1-phase; in the first mentioned region with theL 1-phase below the lac where at the border it is saturated with octanoic acid and in the latter region with theL 1-phase just above the lac, where the dilute sodium octanoate solution contains dissolved 1 NaC8 1HC8 x H2O. In the large central part of theL 2-phase, from about 20 % to about 86 % of water, the location of the border is dominated by the acid octanoate 1 NaC8 3 HC8 x H2O and that makes an equilibrium with theL 1-phase impossible; instead one has an equilibrium via a two-phase zone between the amphiphile-rich region of theL 2-phase and its water-rich region. In the first region the location of the border is regulated by the decreasing capability of the hydrated acid octanoate 1 NaC8 3 HC8 x H2O to dissolve octanoic acid; in the latter it is regulated by the fact that 1 NaC8 3 HC8 x H2O is the most fatty acid-rich acid-soap that is formed and that the octanoic acid is very little soluble in water and in the aqueous solution of this acidsoap.The middle part of theL 2-phase, especially the region between about 55 % and 82 % of water, constitutes a direct continuation of the liquid crystalline lamellarD-phase. The liquid crystalline character of theD-phase is lost at the transition, but the lamellar organization is retained. That the molecules at least up to a water content of about 40 % are of the original reversed type and have an elongated shape with a central part of hydrated polar groups, from which core the hydrocarbon chains extend in two opposite directions, is the reason to that they, at crowding, form transient layer-like agglomerates of tightly packed more or less parallel molecules; this facilitates the transformation to coherent double amphiphilic layers, in which all molecules lie with the hydrated polar groups outwards toward coherent domains of bulk-water, without another liquid phase occurs.  相似文献

Sugar-lipid hybrids of the type CnCm were prepared by coupling an alkane chain (Cn) with a maltooligosaccharide (Gm) over an amide linkage. Coupling was performed with maltobionolactone (G2) and n-alkylamine chains Cn withn=8,10,12,14,16, i.e. variation of the hydrophobic part of the molecule, and with hexadecylamine (C16) and different maltooligosaccharides (Gm, m=2,3,4,6). The solution properties of the various products were studied by means of static and dynamic light scattering (LS) and by electron-microscopy (EM).The results may be summarized as follows: If the alkane chain is shorter thann=14, small spherical micelles with a radius of about 3 nm are observed. In time these micelles aggregate further to form increasingly larger spherical clusters which eventually precipitate. Long rod-like micelles form whenn 14. Contour length and chain stiffness were determined by applying theories of semiflexible chains. A qualitative confirmation of the light scattering results, i.e., micelle size and shape, was obtained from electron microscopy.  相似文献

The influence of the temperature and time of heating during dissolution on the aging of concentrated aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol) and aging at different temperatures are described.
