A new polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane macromer, octakis[N‐(6‐aminopyridin‐2‐yl)undecanamide‐10‐dimethyl‐siloxy]silsesquioxane (POSS‐C11‐Py), containing eight diaminopyridine arms, is able to self‐assemble to form a physically crosslinked polymer‐like structure with good mechanical properties (tensile strength = 46.1 MPa, tensile modulus = 0.58 GPa, elongation = 49.3%) through quadruple hydrogen bonding interactions between these arms. POSS‐C11‐Py is the first organic/inorganic supermolecule possessing polymer‐like mechanical properties as a result of self‐complementary interactions, providing a potential route toward the design and fabrication of polymer‐like supramolecular materials.

One‐dimensional methyl orange fibrils can be easily prepared. They are stable in acidic aqueous solutions and soluble in neutral water. When used to synthesize conducting polymer microtubules, the fibrils act as “hard templates” formally but as “soft templates” effectively. Microtubular structures of polypyrrole, polyaniline, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) have been achieved successfully via such water‐soluble versatile templates.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

Some new water‐soluble bis‐porphyrins, constituted of two porphyrin units spaced by means of aliphatic bridges of different lengths, were synthesized and characterized by MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and UV‐vis spectroscopy. The hydrosolubility of these uncharged compounds was guaranteed from the presence of six long PEG chains bound on the peripheral positions of the two porphyrins. Cobalt and zinc derivatives were also prepared. In the case of Co‐bis‐porphyrin, the appearance of induced circular dichroism (ICD) signals in water solution confirmed the formation of stable complexes with some amino acids, in which the bis‐porphyrin behaves like molecular tweezers.

The synthesis of a rapidly forming redox responsive poly(ferrocenylsilane)‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PFS‐PEG)‐based hydrogel is described, achieved by a thiol‐Michael addition click reaction. PFS bearing acrylate side groups (PFS‐acryl) was synthesized by side group modification of poly(ferrocenyl(3‐iodopropyl)methylsilane) (PFS‐I) and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The equilibrium swelling ratio, morphology, rheology, and redox responsive properties of the PFS‐PEG‐based hydrogel are reported.

We describe an enzyme‐responsive polymeric vehicle, which is of great interest in controlled drug delivery, biosensing, and other related areas. The polymer synthesized using lipase as catalyst in DMSO has a favorable molecular structure that is quickly hydrolyzed by lipase in aqueous phase, and allows a fast release of encapsulated molecules.

A reverse‐barrier technique is used to enable the treatment of electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofibrous membranes with supercritical carbon dioxide. The treatment induces the formation of nanopores and extended‐chain β crystallites of small lateral dimensions in the nanofibers. It also creates interfiber junctions, resulting in a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties of the membranes. The treated membranes are able to retain their shape very well after loading with an ionic liquid (IL). The ionic conductivity of the IL‐loaded membrane is very close to that of the neat IL.

Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) was used for the synthesis of monolithic capillary columns with inner diameters of 200 µm. The resulting polymeric monoliths were characterized by inverse size‐exclusion chromatography (ISEC). Surface functionalization was carried out in situ using 2‐(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl)norborn‐5‐ene‐2‐ylcarboxylic amide ( 1 ). The resulting functionalized monoliths were successfully used in anion‐exchange chromatography of oligodeoxynucleotides.

Summary: A multistep synthetic procedure for preparing novel C60‐anchored two‐armed poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) was developed. First, two‐armed poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) bearing a malonate ester core with well‐controlled molecular weight was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization. The effective Bingel reaction between C60 and the well‐defined polymer was then carried out to yield C60‐anchored polymer. GPC, 1H NMR, and UV‐vis spectroscopy indicated that the C60‐anchored polymer was a monosubstituted and ‘closed’ 6,6‐ring‐bridged methanofullerene derivative.

Summary: This paper reports the microwave mediated direct synthesis of N‐phenylmaleimide ( 3 ) from maleic anhydride ( 1 ) and aniline ( 2 ) by using microwave irradiation. Good yields and very short reaction times were the main aspects of the method. The reaction conditions and kinetics of this process were investigated. Microwave irradiation in a boiling solvent showed the existence of a significant specific microwave effect. The microwave homopolymerization of 3 in bulk using 2,2′‐azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a free radical initiator was also carried out.

Water‐soluble single‐ and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by grafting polyacrylamide chains from the graphitic surface via ceric ion‐induced redox radical polymerization. The reducing functionalities were covalently attached to the tubes by peroxide‐assisted radical reaction. The results showed that polymer chains were grafted onto CNTs by the redox process. The redox radical polymerization initiated by carbon nanotube‐bearing functionalities not only provides a powerful strategy for modifying the carbon nanostructures but also gives us the knowledge of their sidewall chemistry.

Summary: An amino‐functionalized bipyridine ligand was prepared in order to serve as a bridging unit to an activated low‐molecular‐weight monomethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Coordination of a ruthenium(II ) phenantroline precursor onto the formed PEG‐containing bipyridine ligand yielded a metal‐containing polymer which shows interesting properties for solar cell applications.

The free volume (voids) distribution in the lamellae of the conventional symmetric and amphiphilic diblock copolymers is studied via Monte–Carlo simulation based on the standard bond fluctuation model. Both in the conventional and amphiphilic block copolymers the voids are found to concentrate on the interfaces between the incompatible units, the magnitude of the effect being unexpectedly significant. A crystalline‐like ordering of voids with increase of the incompatibility between the different repeated units in amphiphilic copolymers is first reported and implications of this peculiarity for the morphology and mechanical properties of the amphiphilic copolymers are discussed.

A unique example of macromolecular self‐assembly, where a mono‐component homopolyimide bearing carboxy end‐groups spontaneously forms nanopartilces with novel dimple‐like morphology in a single good solvent, is presented. The self‐assembly process is dramatically affected by the solution concentration and the temperature. It is proposed that such an unexpected self‐assembly behavior is a synergistic result of the self‐complementary hydrogen bonding between carboxy end‐groups and the propensity to parallel packing of polyimide chains through aromatic interactions.

Oxiranes, such as glycidyl phenyl ether, benzyl glycidate, glycidyl methyl ether, and styrene oxide, were copolymerized with dicarboxylic anhydrides, such as succinic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, and maleic anhydride, by the action of an enzyme in a stepwise reaction to produce the corresponding polyesters containing some ether linkages having a maximum M w of 13 500. Oxiranes, such as glycidol and glycidyl phenyl ether, were also homopolymerized and copolymerized with other oxiranes by the enzyme to produce the corresponding polyethers.
