Soft nanotechnology requires new approaches and materials to efficiently convert chemical energy into mechanical motion and vice versa. A number of key design parameters, such as responsiveness to external stimuli, directionality of response through alignment, transduction via surface stresses or changes in ionic conductivity can be found in polymer brushes and several recent examples of actuation and transduction in polymer brushes will be explored.

Self‐doped sulfonated polyaniline (PSA) has been synthesized on the surface of micellar nanoparticles made from positively charged surfactants by biocatalysis. The conformation forced by the electrostatic charge interactions between the positively charged micelle and the negatively charged PSA increases the conductivity of the PSA by three orders of magnitude. The pure PSA recovered from ion exchange, however, shows quite similar electrical properties compared with sulfonated polyanilines reported earlier. The increased conductivity of PSA complexes is as a result of the increased charge carrier concentration caused by a certain conformational locking.

Summary: The debate on the mechanism of dithiobenzoate‐mediated RAFT polymerization may be resolved by including the reaction between a propagating radical and the star‐shaped combination product from irreversible termination into the kinetic scheme. By this step, a highly reactive propagating radical and a not overly stable three‐arm star species are transformed into the resonance‐stabilized RAFT intermediate radical and a very stable polymer molecule. The time evolution of concentrations is discussed for the main‐equilibrium range of CDB‐mediated methyl acrylate polymerization.

Summary: Core‐sheath nanofibers with conductive polyaniline as the core and an insulating polymer as the sheath were prepared by electrospinning of blends of polyaniline with either polystyrene or polycarbonate. These unique core‐sheath structures offer potential in a number of applications including nanoelectronics. When polyaniline was blended with poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(ethylene oxide), only isolated domains of polyaniline in beadlike structures were formed. The phase morphology of electrospun fibers is thought to be dependent on the high‐surface tension of the solution and the molecular weight of the polymers. Incompatibility of the polymers and low molecular weight of compositions played a key role in the formation of core‐sheath structures, as opposed to co‐continuous morphologies.

We report a facile method to accomplish the crosslinking reaction of PVA with SWNTs, MWNTs, and C‐60 using MW irradiation. Nanocomposites of PVA crosslinked with SWNT, MWNT and C‐60 were prepared expeditiously by reacting the respective carbon nanotubes with 3 wt.‐% PVA under MW irradiation, maintaining a temperature of 100 °C, representing a radical improvement over literature methods to prepare such crosslinked PVA composites. This general preparative procedure is versatile and provides a simple route to manufacture useful SWNT, MWNT and C‐60 nanocomposites.

Despite the practical importance of polymer melt instabilities, there is still a lack of experiments able to characterize in situ the origin and behavior of these phenomena. In this context, a new set‐up consisting of high sensitive pressure transducers located inside a slit‐die and an advanced mathematical framework to process in situ measurements of polymer melt instabilities, are developed and applied. Our results show for the first time that pressure oscillations can actually be detected inside the die under sharkskin conditions. This originates from a factor of 103 and 102 improvement in terms of time and pressure resolution. Furthermore, new evidence towards the propagation of the slip phenomena along the die in spurt instabilities are found.

Kinetic Monte Carlo studies (confirmed by integration of the corresponding differential equations) are used to demonstrate the fundamental differences between the two most often accepted schemes of segmental exchange. Modeling of reshuffling systems, originally composed of homopolymers of various , various mass distributions, and different compositions, is carried out until the equilibrium copolymers are obtained. It is shown that one of the schemes leads always to a random microstructure (Bernoulli statistics) whereas modeling of the other one indicates possibility of formation of all achievable distributions of comonomer units (from multiblock to nearly alternate). The concepts of the degrees of randomness and reshuffling are discussed and new definitions are proposed.

Enzyme‐loaded magnetic polyelectrolyte multilayer nanotubes prepared by layer‐by‐layer assembly combined with the porous template could be used as biomimetic nanoreactors. It is demonstrated that calcium carbonate can be biomimetically synthesized inside the cavities of the polyelectrolyte nanotubes by the catalysis of urease, and the size of the calcium carbonate precipitates was controlled by the cavity dimensions. The metastable structure of the calcium carbonate precipitates inside the nanotubes was protected by the outer shell of the polyelectrolyte multilayers. These features may allow polyelectrolyte nanotubes to be applied in the fields of nanomaterials synthesis, controlled release, and drug delivery.

A novel preparation method for the core‐shell type biodegradable polyesters or biodegradable materials grafted with biodegradable polyesters was developed by alkaline surface treatment of biodegradable polyester films and subsequent enzymatic polymerization of aliphatic lactones, one example of which is shown in this study, i.e., the preparation of poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) film grafted with poly(ε‐caprolactone). It is revealed that only alkaline surface treatment or the combination of alkaline surface treatment and enzyme‐catalyzed grafting, the former and the latter, respectively accelerating and delaying the enzymatic degradation of PLLA, will give PLLA materials having a wide variety of biodegradability. Also, the specificity of the enzyme used for hydrolysis could be used to confirm the grafted chain species.

Summary: Poly(vinyl acetate) chains end‐capped by a Co(acac)2 complex [PVAc‐Co(acac)2] were prepared by bulk cobalt‐mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) of vinyl acetate and used for grafting fullerene (C60) with four PVAc arms at low temperature (30 °C). A photoactive water‐soluble poly(vinyl alcohol)/C60 nanohybrid was then prepared by hydrolysis of the PVAc arms of the nanohybrid. Because of photoactivity and very low cytotoxicity, this type of water‐soluble nanohybrid is very promising for the photodynamic cancer therapy.

Summary: Polyaniline (PANI) nanowires and sub‐micro/nanostructured dendrites are synthesized and immobilized on PP‐g‐PAA film surfaces via routine oxidative polymerization of aniline under different conditions, where grafting poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) served as a template and dopant, and SDS as a surfactant. The immobilized PANI enhances the surface hydrophilicity of the poly(propylene) (PP) films, and a superhydrophilic surface is obtained in this way. The mechanism of forming different morphologies of PANI and of correspondingly obtaining a superhydrophilic surface are briefly discussed.

FESEM image shows the PANI sub‐micro/nanostructured dendrites immobilized on the surfaces of PP films. The modified surface is highly hydrophilic with a water contact angle of 3°.  相似文献

Methyl 2‐(bicyclo[3.1.0]hex‐1‐yl)acrylate ( 1 ) was synthesized from methyl 2‐(cyclopentene‐1‐yl)‐2‐hydroxyacetate by cyclopropanation, followed by oxidation to the corresponding bicyclic 2‐oxoacetate and Wittig olefination with methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide. Initiated with 2,2′‐azoisobutyronitrile at 65 °C in chlorobenzene, the radical homopolymerization of 1 occurred with opening of the cyclopropane ring leading to a polymer with a glass transition temperature of 90 °C. The reactivity of 1 in radical copolymerization was higher than that of methyl methacrylate.

The syntheses of amphiphilic block copolymers are successfully performed in water by chain extension of hydrophilic macromolecules with styrene at 80 °C. The employed strategy is a one‐pot procedure in which poly(acrylic acid), poly(methacrylic acid) or poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate) macroRAFTs are first formed in water using 4‐cyano‐4‐thiothiopropylsulfanyl pentanoic acid (CTPPA) as a chain transfer agent. The resulting macroRAFTs are then directly used without further purification for the RAFT polymerization of styrene in water in the same reactor. This simple and straightforward strategy leads to a very good control of the resulting amphiphilic block copolymers.

A series of selenophene oligomers incorporating conjugated fluorinated phenylene units have been synthesised as potential semiconductor materials for organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs). X‐ray crystallography shows that the molecules are held in close proximity by several short intermolecular contacts, making them ideal candidates for OFET applications.

An algorithm is developed for simulating adsorption of tree type block‐branched copolymer chains, of arbitrary architecture, from dilute solutions to solid surfaces. A continuum form of the self‐consistent field (SCF) theory is used. The chain architecture is first represented by a convergent tree‐graph, which is then converted into a special type of the connectivity matrix. This matrix is used for computing the configurational statistics of the chains in the adsorbed layer. The crucial step in the algorithm is to compute the junction (branch point) probability weights. A stepwise procedure for computing these probability weights is described. The capability of the algorithm has been demonstrated using illustrative examples.
