Type II photoinitiated self‐condensing vinyl polymerization for the preparation of hyperbranched polymers is explored using 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) or 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), and methyl methacrylate as hydrogen donating inimers and comonomer, respectively, in the presence of benzophenone and camphorquinone under UV and visible light. Upon irradiation at the corresponding wavelength, the excited photoinitiator abstracts hydrogen from HEMA or DMAEMA leading to the formation of initiating radicals. Depending on the concentration of inimers, type of the photoinitiator, and irradiation time, hyperbranched polymers with different branching densities and cross‐linked polymers are formed.

A novel type of emulsion gel based on star‐polymer‐stabilized emulsions is highlighted, which contains discrete hydrophobic oil and hydrophilic aqueous solution domains. Well‐defined phenol‐functionalized core‐crosslinked star polymers are synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)‐mediated dispersion polymerization and are used as stabilizers for oil‐in‐water emulsions. Horseradish‐peroxidase‐catalyzed polymerization of the phenol moieties in the presence of H2O2 enables rapid formation of crosslinked emulsion gels under mild conditions. The crosslinked emulsion gels exhibit enhanced mechanical strength, as well as widely tunable composition.

An ultraviolet (UV)‐cleavable bottlebrush polymer is synthesized using the “grafting‐onto” strategy by combining living radical polymerization and copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). In this approach, reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization is used to prepare a poly(methylacrylate) backbone with azide side groups, while atom transfer radical polymerization is employed to prepare polystyrene (PS) side chains end‐functionalized with o‐nitrobenzyl (UV‐cleavable) propargyl groups. CuAAC is then used to graft PS side chains onto the polymer backbone, producing the corresponding bottlebrush polymers with UV‐cleavable PS side chains. The formation of the bottlebrush polymer is characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The cleavage behavior of the bottlebrush polymer is monitored in tetrahydrofuran solution under UV irradiation by GPC and viscosity measurements.

Electrohydrodynamic cojetting has been employed to synthesize compartmentalized microfibers from thermally responsive hydrogels. The synthesis of the hydrogels as well as their transformation into compartmentalized microcylinders is discussed. After programmable shape‐shifting, snail‐like particles are obtained that undergo functional and structural reconfiguration in response to a change in temperature.

The chemical control of cell division has attracted much attention in the areas of single cell‐based biology and high‐throughput screening platforms. A mussel‐inspired cytocompatible encapsulation method for achieving a “cell‐division control” with cross‐linked layer‐by‐layer (LbL) shells is developed. Catechol‐grafted polyethyleneimine and hyaluronic acid are chosen as polyelectrolytes for the LbL process, and the cross‐linking of polyelectrolytes is performed at pH 8.5. Cell division is controlled by the number of the LbL nanolayers and cross‐linking reaction. We also suggest a new measuring unit, , for quantifying “cell‐division timing” based on microbial growth kinetics.

A novel and non‐cytotoxic self‐healing supramolecular elastomer (SE) is synthesized with small‐molecular biological acids by hydrogen‐bonding interactions. The synthesized SEs behave as rubber at room temperature without additional plasticizers or crosslinkers, which is attributed to the phase‐separated structure. The SE material exhibits outstanding self‐healing capability at room temperature and essential non‐cytotoxicity, which makes it a potential candidate for biomedical applications.

Surface‐initiated photo‐induced copper‐mediated radical polymerization is employed to graft a wide range of polyacrylate brushes from silicon substrates at extremely low catalyst concentrations. This is the first time that the controlled nature of the reported process is demonstrated via block copolymer formation and re‐initiation experiments. In addition to unmatched copper catalyst concentrations in the range of few ppb, film thicknesses up to almost 1 μm are achieved within only 1 h.

Pillararene‐containing thermoresponsive polymers are synthesized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization using pillararene derivatives as the effective chain transfer agents for the first time. These polymers can self‐assemble into micelles and form vesicles after guest molecules are added. Furthermore, such functional polymers can be further applied to prepare hybrid gold nanoparticles, which integrate the thermoresponsivity of polymers and molecular recognition of pillararenes.

The synthesis of highly efficient two‐photon uncaging groups and their potential use in functional conjugated polymers for post‐polymerization modification are reported. Careful structural design of the employed nitrophenethyl caging groups allows to efficiently induce bond scission by a two‐photon process through a combination of exceptionally high two‐photon absorption cross‐sections and high reaction quantum yields. Furthermore, π‐conjugated polyfluorenes are functionalized with these photocleavable side groups and it is possible to alter their emission properties and solubility behavior by simple light irradiation. Cleavage of side groups leads to a turn‐on of the fluorescence while solubility of the π‐conjugated materials is drastically reduced.

A linear supramolecular polymer based on the self‐assembly of an easily available copillar[5]arene monomer is efficiently prepared, which is evidenced by the NMR spectroscopy, viscosity measurement, and DOSY experiment. The single‐crystal X‐ray analysis reveals that the polymerization of the AB‐type monomer is driven by the quadruple CH•••π interactions and one CH•••O interaction.

Novel macrocyclic amine‐linked oligocarbazole hollow microspheres are synthesized via a one‐step oxidative method in aqueous solution. Upon altering the oxidants and acidic media, the average diameters of the obtained hollow microspheres are tunable from 0.23 to 2.0 μm. With attractive amine and carbazole functionalities, exposed surface area, thermostability, and photoluminescent properties, the amine‐linked oligocarbazole hollow microspheres are directly assembled to yield heavy metal sorbents with excellent selectivity and recyclability, shown to efficiently remove lead from contaminated water.

Imitating the natural “energy cascade” architecture, we present a single‐molecular rod‐like nano‐light harvester (NLH) based on a cylindrical polymer brush. Block copolymer side chains carrying (9,9‐diethylfluoren‐2‐yl)methyl methacrylate units as light absorbing antennae (energy donors) are tethered to a linear polymer backbone containing 9‐anthracenemethyl methacrylate units as emitting groups (energy acceptors). These NLHs exhibit very efficient energy absorption and transfer. Moreover, we manipulate the energy transfer by tuning the donor–acceptor distance.

Cross‐linked azobenzene liquid‐crystalline polymer films with a poly(oxyethylene) backbone are synthesized by photoinitiated cationic copolymerization. Azobenzene moieties in the film surface toward the light source are simultaneously photoaligned during photopolymerization with unpolarized 436 nm light and thus form a splayed alignment in the whole film. The prepared films show reversible photoinduced bending behavior with opposite bending directions when different surfaces of one film face to ultraviolet light irradiation.

Diselenide‐containing polymers are facilely synthesized from polymers prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Benefiting from the ATRP technology, this protocol provides a flexible route for controlling the polymer structure, which allows for a great variety of architectures of selenium‐containing polymer materials for applications in various fields. The oxidative and reductive responsive behavior of the obtained diselenide‐containing polymers is also investigated.

Well‐defined ABC triblock copolymers based on two hydrophilic blocks, A and C, and a hydrophobic block B are synthesized and their self‐assembly behavior is investigated. Interestingly, at the same solvent, concentration, pH, and temperature, different shape micelles are observed, spherical and worm‐like micelles, depending on the preparation method. Specifically, spherical micelles are observed with bulk rehydration while both spherical and worm‐like micelles are observed with film rehydration.

Polydiacetylenes have received intense attention on account of their well‐established chromic alterations that are detectable often by the naked eye, making them ideal for a variety of applications such as biosensory materials. These polymers have been fabricated in a variety of materials platforms including 3D crystals, 2D monolayers, and 0D spherical vesicles; however, 1D morphologies that might be useful for directional energy migration are less common. This article describes the development and current research efforts of protein‐based 1D nanowire‐like supramolecular assemblies with embedded polydiacetylenes.

A simple process is developed to fabricate metallo‐supramolecular nanogels (MSNs) by the metallo‐supramolecular‐coordinated interaction between histidine and iron‐meso‐tetraphenylporphin. MSNs are composed of histidine‐modified dextran (DH) and iron‐meso‐tetraphenylporphin (Fe–Por) and exhibit excellent biocompatibility and stability. MSNs show pH responsiveness in the intracellular mildly acidic environment, which has great potential for acid‐triggered drug release delivery. In vitro drug release profiles demonstrate that the pH‐dependent disassembly of MSNs to histidine and Por results in a quicker release rate of loaded‐DOX at pH 5.3, while at pH 7.4 MSNs could hinder the release of loaded‐DOX due to the enhanced stability of MSNs.

A simple and effective airflow method to prepare sandwich‐type block copolymer films is reported. The films are composed of three layers: vertically oriented nanocylinders align in both upper and bottom layers and irregular nanocylinders exist in the bulk of the film. The vertically oriented nanocylinders in both sides can provide high accessibility to ions and ensures the exchange of chemical species between the membrane and external environment, while the irregularly oriented nanocylinders in the middle part of the film can prolong the pathway of ions transportation and enhance ions selectivity.
