Summary: Fabrication of honeycomb‐patterned films from amphiphilic dendronized block copolymer (PEO113b‐PDMA82) by ‘on‐solid surface spreading’ and ‘on‐water spreading’ method is reported. Highly ordered honeycomb films with quasi‐horizontally paralleled double‐layered structure can be fabricated by the on‐solid surface spreading method. This work raises the possibility that such structures can be formed in amphiphilic dendronized block copolymers and extends the family of source materials.

Large scale of well‐ordered macroporous π‐conjugated polymer monoliths have been successfully prepared through a new approach using micrometer‐sized naphthalene crystals as templates. The macroporous monoliths of poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and poly(p‐phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) grew along the unidirectional freezing direction inside the template naphthalene crystals which lead to the formation of controlling morphologies and homogeneous diameters. The polymer monoliths show straight and lamella macroporous structures. The diameters of pores and the thickness of pore walls can be controlled by tuning the freezing temperature.

Summary: A new approach is introduced to create submicrometer patterned surfaces using multilayer polymer films that contain alternating layers of two polymers, linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) and ethylene‐co‐(acrylic acid) copolymer (EAA). Patterned templates have been prepared by microtoming the multilayer molded sheets. Regionally confined chemical functionality is confirmed by grafting an amine‐terminated biotin and adsorbing streptavidin specifically on the alternating layers of EAA.

Microporous films consisting of two‐dimensionally ordered void structures ‐ so‐called honeycomb films ‐ were produced by evaporation of polymer solutions under high humidity. Two types of poly(vinyl cinnamate)s were used: A newly synthesized amphiphilic poly(vinyl cinnamate) and a mixture of a commercial poly(vinyl cinnamate) and an amphiphilic polyion complex. Photo‐crosslinking of the honeycomb structure could be achieved by UV irradiation while completely retaining the film morphology. The crosslinked films showed excellent stability against organic solvents.

We report for the first time the preparation of single polypyrrole (PPy) molecule chains using a “metal‐organic framework” with 1 nm channels as a template. The obtained one‐dimensional (1‐D) PPy has highly structure order and excellent conductivity, which has improved by as much as five orders of magnitude in comparison with that of 2‐D PPy.

Some new water‐soluble bis‐porphyrins, constituted of two porphyrin units spaced by means of aliphatic bridges of different lengths, were synthesized and characterized by MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and UV‐vis spectroscopy. The hydrosolubility of these uncharged compounds was guaranteed from the presence of six long PEG chains bound on the peripheral positions of the two porphyrins. Cobalt and zinc derivatives were also prepared. In the case of Co‐bis‐porphyrin, the appearance of induced circular dichroism (ICD) signals in water solution confirmed the formation of stable complexes with some amino acids, in which the bis‐porphyrin behaves like molecular tweezers.

Summary: This paper describes the facile step‐by‐step synthesis to graft lactic acid or lactoyl lactate onto primary as well as secondary alcohol derivatives of methacrylamides via esterification. Elongation of the chains is achieved by repeating the coupling reactions with either hydroxyl‐protected monolactate or hydroxyl‐protected dilactate, followed by mild deprotection using tetrabutylammonium fluoride. This versatile synthesis route generates, on a multi‐gram scale, monodisperse oligolactates of predetermined lengths with functional end groups. The products can be used, for example, as building blocks for biodegradable polymeric materials.

The catalytic properties of bis(phenoxy‐imine) Zr and Hf complexes incorporating perfluorophenyl groups with methylaluminoxane were investigated. The fluorinated complexes produced far higher‐molecular‐weight polyethylenes and ethylene/propylene copolymers with increased activities compared with the non‐fluorinated congeners. Moreover, the fluorinated complexes displayed a higher incorporation ability for propylene.

One‐dimensional methyl orange fibrils can be easily prepared. They are stable in acidic aqueous solutions and soluble in neutral water. When used to synthesize conducting polymer microtubules, the fibrils act as “hard templates” formally but as “soft templates” effectively. Microtubular structures of polypyrrole, polyaniline, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) have been achieved successfully via such water‐soluble versatile templates.

Micrometer‐sized polydiacetylene (PDA) vesicle patterns on titanium substrates have been successfully fabricated by using a micromolding in capillaries (MIMIC) technique. The shape and width of the PDA patterns are well matched with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds used in the MIMIC process. However, the thicknesses of the patterned films are less than the depths of the PDMS molds, which may be a consequence of the poor water wettability of the PDMS and/or low concentrations of the PDA solutions. Heat‐treatment of the solid substrate, immobilized with blue‐phase PDAs, induces a blue‐to‐red‐phase transition and results in the formation of patterned fluorescence images.

Reactions between the ethylene groups in the backbone of conjugated polymers under UV illumination and heat treatment result in the cross‐linking of the main polymer chains. The cross‐linking leads to two simultaneous results in the polymer: excellent solvent resistance and increased bandgap. Using this reaction, three‐color polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) with a multi‐layer structure can be easily realized by a dry photo‐pattern in an active‐gas‐free environment. Multi‐layer blue devices with dramatically enhanced efficiency can also be achieved conveniently.

Are hyperbranched polymers capable of forming entanglements? This is the central issue of this contribution. Hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) samples with different molecular weights (600–106 000 g · mol−1), narrow polydispersities (1.2–1.8) and high degrees of branching (≈0.6) were prepared by anionic ring‐opening polymerization. The viscoelastic properties of these polymers with respect to molecular architecture and molar mass were investigated. At low molecular weights “classical” scaling behavior between zero shear viscosity and molecular weight can be observed, whereas between 3 000 and 10 000 g · mol−1 a plateau‐like area is found. The results indicate entanglement dynamics when exceeding a critical molar mass ( ≈ 20 000 g · mol−1) due to entangled hyperbranched polyglycerols.

Summary: The grafting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) onto silica nanoparticles was performed in situ by the ring‐opening polymerization of the oxirane monomer initiated from the mineral surface using aluminium isopropoxide as an initiator/heterogeneous catalyst. Alcohol groups were first introduced onto silica by reacting the surfacic silanols with prehydrolyzed 3‐glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane. The alcohol‐grafted silica played the role of a coinitiator/chain‐transfer agent in the polymerization reaction and enabled the formation of irreversibly bonded polymer chains. Silica nanoparticles containing up to 40 wt.‐% of a hairy layer of grafted PEO chains were successfully produced by this technique.

Summary: A water‐soluble gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 was prepared by chloroauric acid and a polypseudorotaxane 1 of mono‐6‐thio‐β‐cyclodextrin with poly(propylene glycol) bis(2‐aminopropyl ether) ( ≈ 2 000) in the presence of sodium borohydride in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The investigative results indicated that the gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 might act as an efficient DNA‐cleavage reagent.

In contrast to the conventional two‐step method, which involves the generation of reactive functional groups followed by incubation in a dye solution (a wet developing process), the “precursor approach” enables the rapid and cost‐effective generation of patterned images in one step, without the need for an additional wet process. By using the “precursor approach”, the fluorescence of precursor molecules in polymer films can be effectively manipulated by: (1) photoinduced removal of transient protecting groups; (2) photoinduced protonation or intramolecular proton transfer; (3) photochromism; (4) photoinduced formation of fluorophores; (5) photoinduced oxidative degradation or molecular orientation.

Poly(L ‐lactide)/layered aluminosilicate nanocomposites were synthesized in bulk by ring‐opening polymerization in the presence of two organo‐modified montmorillonites. When the organo‐modifier consisted of an ammonium cation bearing primary hydroxyl groups, polymerization was initiated by the alcohol functions after adequate activation. The growing polymer chains were directly “grafted” onto the clay surface through the hydroxyl‐functionalized ammonium cations yielding exfoliated nanocomposites with enhanced thermal stability.

A two‐armed polymer with a crown ether core self‐assembles to produce macroporous films with pores perpendicularly reaching through the film down to the substrate. A possible assembling mechanism is discussed. The pore size can be conveniently adjusted by changing the solution concentration. These through‐hole macroporous films provide a template for fabricating an array of Cu nanoparticle aggregates.

Summary: Amphiphilic triblock copolymers (PEOxb‐PDMSyb‐PEOx) with different block lengths were synthesized and multi‐morphological complex crew‐cut, star‐like, and short‐chain aggregates were prepared by self‐assembly of the given copolymers. The morphologies and dimensions of the aggregates can be well controlled by variation of the preparation conditions. TEM, SEM, FFR‐TEM, and LLS studies show the resulting morphologies range from LCMs, unilamellar or multilayer vesicles, LCVs, porous spheres to nanorods.
