The necessary conditions for nonlinear excitation of higher-order modes in a single-mode step-index optical fiber are analyzed. The cutoff conditions for such an optical waveguide are investigated taking into account Kerr nonlinearity. The minimal power of optical pulses required for fulfilling the necessary conditions for nonlinear excitation of higher-order modes in a single-mode step-index fiber is calculated as a function of the normalized frequency. The allowed ranges of variation of the normalized frequency and optical-radiation power are estimated. It is demonstrated that the conditions necessary for nonlinear excitation of a higher-order mode in a step-index single-mode optical fiber can be created for optical pulses shorter than 500 fs.  相似文献

We investigate the suppression of Kerr nonlinearities by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a fiber transmission system without power symmetry by including all the manifestations of the Kerr nonlinearities. We found that OPC cannot completely compensate for all Kerr nonlinearities in absence of power symmetry, and some nonlinearities may become even worse if one of the nonlinearities is fully compensated. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the compensation system to eliminate the most dominating nonlinearity. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the interplay of various kinds of nonlinearities. The need of proper design for transmission systems to suppress the dominating nonlinear effect is shown when all manifestations of Kerr nonlinearity are not compensated simultaneously.  相似文献

We present a review of new results which suggest the existence of fully stable spinning solitons (self-supporting localised objects with an internal vorticity) in optical fibres with self-focusing Kerr (cubic) nonlinearity, and in bulk media featuring a combination of the cubic self-defocusing and quadratic nonlinearities. Their distinctive difference from other optical solitons with an internal vorticity, which were recently studied in various optical media, theoretically and also experimentally, is that all the spinning solitons considered thus far have been found to be unstable against azimuthal perturbations. In the first part of the paper, we consider solitons in a nonlinear optical fibre in a region of parameters where the fibre carries exactly two distinct modes, viz., the fundamental one and the first-order helical mode. From the viewpoint of application to communication systems, this opens the way to doubling the number of channels carried by a fibre. Besides that, these solitons are objects of fundamental interest. To fully examine their stability, it is crucially important to consider collisions between them, and their collisions with fundamental solitons, in (ordinary or hollow) optical fibres. We introduce a system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations for the fundamental and helical modes with nonstandard values of the cross-phase-modulation coupling constants, and show, in analytical and numerical forms, results of collisions between solitons carried by the two modes. In the second part of the paper, we demonstrate that the interaction of the fundamental beam with its second harmonic in bulk media, in the presence of self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity, gives rise to the first ever example of completely stable spatial ring-shaped solitons with intrinsic vorticity. The stability is demonstrated both by direct simulations and by analysis of linearized equations.  相似文献

The intra-channel collision of optical solitons, with Kerr law nonlinearity, is studied by the aid of quasi-particle theory. The perturbation terms considered in this paper are all of Hamiltonian type. It is shown that the soliton–soliton interaction can be suppressed in the presence of these perturbations, namely, the self-steepening, the third-order dispersion, the fourth-order dispersion and the frequency separation between the soliton carrier and the gain-center frequency. The prediction of quasi-particle theory are fully confirmed by direct numerical simulations.  相似文献

Three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (SIM) enlarges frequency cutoff laterally and axially by a factor of two, compared with conventional microscopy. However, its optical resolution is still fundamentally limited. It is necessary to introduce nonlinearity to enlarge frequency cutoff further. We propose three-dimensional nonlinear structured illumination microscopy based on stimulated emission depletion (STED) effect, which has a structured excitation pattern and a structured STED pattern, and both three-dimensional illumination patterns have the same lateral pitch and orientation. Theoretical analysis showed that nonlinearity induced by STED effect, which causes harmonics and contributes to enlarging frequency cutoff, depends on the phase difference between two structured illuminations and that the phase difference of π is the most efficient to increase nonlinearity. We also found that undesirable background fluorescence, which degenerates the contrast of structured pattern and limits the ability of SIM, can be reduced by our method. These results revealed that optical resolution improvement and background fluorescence reduction would be compatible. The feasibility study showed that our method will be realized with commercially available laser, having 3.5 times larger frequency cutoff compared with conventional microscopy.  相似文献

The effect of optical Kerr nonlinearity on the static and dynamic behaviors of quantum cascade laser operating in the mid-infrared is theoretically investigated. Our model is based on three-level rate equations including the dependence of the loss on photon number in the cavity. The optical stability domain that allows for the determination of current injection is derived within the premises of our model. The analytical solutions of eigenvalue equation allowing the investigation of stability analysis are obtained. Furthermore, nonlinear effects influence significantly the dynamics of photons in cavity and electrons in the upper laser level.  相似文献

给出了中心对称光折变晶体中屏蔽孤子的高阶空间电荷场.当高阶项可以忽略时,这个电荷场就变为早前在中心对称光折变晶体中研究的屏蔽孤子的空间电荷场.研究了中心对称光折变晶体中屏蔽孤子的高阶非线性波动方程.在适当的条件下,这个非线性波动方程能够展示明暗空间光孤子.这类晶体不同于非中心对称晶体,其非线性折射率的改变来源于二次电光效应,而不是一般的线性电光效应.应用光束传播的方法,对这些孤子的稳定性进行了讨论.表明在小的微扰下这类孤子是稳定的,不会发生分裂.  相似文献

We investigate the nonclassical properties of output fields propagated through a contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler consisting of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear (quadratic) waveguide operated by second harmonic generation. In contrast to the earlier results, all the initial fields are considered weak and a completely quantum-mechanical model is used here to describe the system. Perturbative solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various field modes are obtained using Sen–Mandal technique. Obtained solutions are subsequently used to show the existence of single-mode and intermodal squeezing, single-mode and intermodal antibunching, two-mode and multi-mode entanglement in the output of contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler. Further, existence of higher order nonclassicality is also established by showing the existence of higher order antibunching, higher order squeezing and higher order entanglement. Variation of observed nonclassical characters with different coupling constants and phase mismatch is discussed.  相似文献

研究了三包层WⅠ和WⅡ型单模光纤的波导色散特性。结果发现在相同条件下,三包层WⅠ和WⅡ型单模光纤零色散点的调节范围比传统的双包层W型单模光纤明显增大。详细分析了几何参量P、Q和光学参量R1、R2对单模传输时的波导色散特性和低次模截止频率的影响。所得的研究结果为获得更为理想的色散补偿、色散平坦光纤及设计新型无源光器件提供了重要的依据。计算波导色散的方法可推广到多包层光纤。  相似文献

This paper introduces a joint nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion pre-compensation method for coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems. The research results show that this method can reduce the walk-off effect and can therefore equalize the nonlinear impairments effectively. Compared with the only other existing nonlinearity pre-compensation method, the joint nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion pre-compensation method is not only suitable for low-dispersion optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing system, but also effective for high-dispersion optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing transmission system with higher input power but without optical dispersion compensation. The suggested solution does not increase computation complexity compared with only nonlinearity pre-compensation method. For 40 Gbit/s coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing 20×80 km standard single-mode fibre system, the suggested method can improve the nonlinear threshold (for Q > 10 dB) about 2.7, 1.2 and 1.0 dB, and the maximum Q factor about 1.2, 0.4 and 0.3 dB, for 2, 8 and 16 ps/(nm·km) dispersion coefficients.  相似文献

We experimentally investigate the evolution of spatial modulation of broadband laser pulses with different pulse durations through a medium with non-instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. By modifying the input laser pulse width, we observe the nonlinear growth of the spatial stripes that arise from interference with different modulation frequencies, and then obtain the gain spectra of the spatial modulation which clearly reveal the influence of relaxation effect on spatiotemporal modulation instability. We find that all gain spectra have the similar fastest growing frequency, but they have tails at higher frequency region in which the growth rate of gain is bigger for shorter pulse duration. The experimental results are confirmed by the perturbational analysis.  相似文献

Nonlinear transmission of a cylindrically symmetric weakly guiding single-mode optical fiber with a sharp change of core diameter is estimated in the approximation of weak nonlinearity of the fiber material and is calculated by direct numerical simulation of light propagation. It is shown that an increase or a decrease of nonlinear transmission in comparison with the linear value depends on the way in which the width of the radial mode distribution changes with changing diameter of the structure. Domains of fiber diameters corresponding to an increase of nonlinear transmission in comparison with the linear value are determined.  相似文献

A method for high precision optical wavefront reconstruction using low resolution spatial light modulators (SLMs) was proposed. It utilizes an adiabatic waveguide taper consisting of a plurality of single-mode waveguides to decompose an incident light field into simple fundamental modes of the single-mode waveguides. By digital generation of the conjugate fields of those simple fundamental modes a field proportional to the original incident light field might be reconstructed accurately based on reciprocity. Devices based on the method using transparent and reflective SLMs possess no aberration like that of a conventional optic lens and are able to achieve diffraction limited resolution. Specifically on the surface of the narrow end of a taper a resolution much higher than half of the wavelength is attainable. The device may work in linear mode and possesses unlimited theoretical 3D space-bandwidth product (SBP). The SBP of a real device is limited by the accuracy of SLMs. A pair of 8-bit SLMs with 1000 × 1000 = 106 pixels could provide a SBP of about 5 × 104. The SBP may expand by 16 times if 10-bit SLMs with the same number of pixels are employed or 16 successive frames are used to display one scene. The device might be used as high precision optical tweezers, or employed for continuous or discrete real-time 3D display, 3D measurement, machine vision, etc.  相似文献

Accurate measurements of the frequency response of the nonlinear refractive index induced by the combined effects of Kerr nonlinearity with electrostrictional excitation of acoustic waves in optical fibers are presented. A detailed experimental investigation of both standard (zero-dispersion wavelength,lambda(0) approximately 1.31microm) and dispersion-shifted (lambda(0)=1.55microm) single-mode fibers showed the presence of several resonant peaks induced by the electrostrictive nonlinearity in the fiber structure. This investigation has provided better insight into the frequency behavior of the electrostriction-induced acoustic waves in optical fibers.  相似文献

In this Letter, we propose a generic nonlinear coupling coefficient, η(NL)2=η|γ/β?|(fiber2)/|γ/β?|(fiber1), which gives a quantitative measure for the efficiency of nonlinear matching of optical fibers by describing how a fundamental soliton couples from one fiber into another. Specifically, we use η(NL) to demonstrate a significant soliton self-frequency shift of a fundamental soliton, and we show that nonlinear matching can take precedence over linear mode matching. The nonlinear coupling coefficient depends on both the dispersion (β?) and nonlinearity (γ), as well as on the power coupling efficiency η. Being generic, η(NL) enables engineering of general waveguide systems, e.g., for optimized Raman redshift or supercontinuum generation.  相似文献

A generalized model to describe the ultrashort pulse propagation in optical fibers with arbitrary modes present by taking advantage of the coupled mode approach is proposed. First the generalized nonlinear coupled mode equations in the frequency domain are derived exactly. Then the simplified forms for the weakly guiding optical fibers are obtained both in the frequency domain and in the time domain. Finally we discuss the particular forms in two special cases, i.e., ideal single-mode fibers and birefringent single-mode fibers.  相似文献

介绍了一种基于新型非线性晶体Ba1-xB2-y-zO4SixAlyGaz 的可调谐深紫外飞秒激光光源. 从理论上分析了基频光和倍频光在通过非线性晶体时所造成的空间走离和群速度失配, 为了补偿空间走离以及波长调谐过程中晶体折射造成的光束偏离现象, 将两块相同的倍频晶体成镜像放置来产生二次谐波. 并调节延迟线的长度来补偿基频光和倍频光之间的群速度失配, 从而提高和频转换效率. 然后通过和频方式进行三倍频和四倍频来突破晶体相位匹配条件的限制, 产生了波长低于200 nm的深紫外飞秒激光. 利用钛宝石激光器提供基频光光源, 最终在250–300 nm, 192.5–210 nm 范围内获得了高重频、可调谐超短脉冲紫外和深紫外激光. 并在基频光波长为800 nm时, 得到的二倍频、三倍频和四倍频的功率分别为1.28 W, 194 mW和5.8 mW, 相对于前一级的转换效率依次为46.14%, 15.16%和3%. 采用互相关法测量得到266.7 nm紫外激光的脉冲宽度约为640.4 fs.  相似文献

Conditions for modulation instability of a wave packet consisting of two codirected linearly coupled waves propagating in a light guide with Kerr-type nonlinearity are formulated. The development of the instability with regard to light guide parameters, linear and nonlinear mode coupling, and input power is analyzed for symmetric and antisymmetric light guide excitations. Unlike in single-mode light guides, here modulation instability may arise in the frequency ranges of normal material dispersion and at the zero perturbation frequency.  相似文献
