This paper considers some scheduling problems with deteriorating jobs. The objectives are to minimize the makespan, the total completion time, the total absolute deviation of completion time, the earliness, tardiness, and due date penalty, the sum of earliness penalties subject to no tardy jobs, respectively. We also explore two resource constrained scheduling problems: how to minimize the resource consumption with makespan constraints and how to minimize the makespan with the total resource consumption constraints. Several polynomial time algorithms are proposed to optimally solve the problems with the above objective functions.

In this paper, we consider the single machine scheduling problems with an actual time-dependent deterioration effect. By the actual time-dependent deterioration effect, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by increasing function of total actual processing time of jobs in front of it in the sequence. We show that even with the introduction of an actual time-dependent deterioration to job processing times, makespan minimization problem, total completion time minimization problem, the total lateness, and the sum of the quadratic job completion times minimization problem remain polynomially solvable, respectively. We also show that the total weighted completion time minimization problem, the discounted total weighted completion time minimization problem, the maximum lateness minimization problem, and the total tardiness minimization problem can be solved in polynomial time under certain conditions.

This paper considers single-machine scheduling problems with job delivery times where the actual job processing time of a job is defined by a function dependent on its position in a schedule. We assume that the job delivery time is proportional to the job waiting time. We investigate the minimization problems of the sum of earliness, tardiness, and due-window-related cost, the total absolute differences in completion times, and the total absolute differences in waiting times on a single-machine setting. The polynomial time algorithms are proposed to optimally solve the above objective functions. We also investigate some special cases of the problem under study and show that they can be optimally solved by lower order algorithms.

We study the earliness-tardiness scheduling problem on a single machine with due date assignment and controllable processing times. We analyze the problem with three different due date assignment methods and two different processing time functions. For each combination of these, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm to find the optimal job sequence, due date values and resource allocation minimizing an objective function which includes earliness, tardiness, due date assignment, makespan and total resource consumption costs.

In this paper we consider the single machine scheduling problem with exponential learning functions. By the exponential learning functions, we mean that the actual job processing time is a function of the total normal processing times of the jobs already processed. We prove that the shortest processing time (SPT) rule is optimal for the total lateness minimization problem. For the following three objective functions, the total weighted completion time, the discounted total weighted completion time, the maximum lateness, we present heuristic algorithms according to the corresponding problems without exponential learning functions. We also analyse the worst-case bound of our heuristic algorithms. It also shows that the problems of minimizing the total tardiness and discounted total weighted completion time are polynomially solvable under some agreeable conditions on the problem parameters.

In this note we consider some single-machine scheduling problems with decreasing time-dependent job processing times. Decreasing time-dependent job processing times means that its processing time is a non-increasing function of its execution start time. We present polynomial solutions for the sum of squared completion times minimization problem, and the sum of earliness penalties minimization problem subject to no tardy jobs, respectively. We also study two resource constrained scheduling problems under the same decreasing time-dependent job processing times model and present algorithms to find their optimal solutions.

In many realistic scheduling settings a job processed later consumes more time than when it is processed earlier – this phenomenon is known as scheduling with deteriorating jobs. In the literature on deteriorating job scheduling problems, majority of the research assumed that the actual job processing time of a job is a function of its starting time. In this paper we consider a new deterioration model where the actual job processing time of a job is a function of the processing times of the jobs already processed. We show that the single-machine scheduling problems to minimize the makespan and total completion time remain polynomially solvable under the proposed model. In addition, we prove that the problems to minimize the total weighted completion time, maximum lateness, and maximum tardiness are polynomially solvable under certain agreeable conditions.

Scheduling with setup times and learning plays a crucial role in today's manufacturing and service environments where scheduling decisions are made with respect to multiple performance criteria rather than a single criterion. In this paper, we address a bicriteria single machine scheduling problem with job-dependent past-sequence-dependent setup times and job-dependent position-based learning effects. The setup time and actual processing time of a job are respectively unique functions of the actual processing times of the already processed jobs and the position of the job in a schedule. The objective is to derive the schedule that minimizes a linear composite function of a pair of performance criteria consisting of the makespan, the total completion time, the total lateness, the total absolute differences in completion times, and the sum of earliness, tardiness, and common due date penalty. We show that the resulting problems cannot be solved in polynomial time; thus, branch-and-bound (B&B) methods are proposed to obtain the optimal schedules. Our computational results demonstrate that the B&B can solve instances of various size problems with attractive times.

A scheduling problem with a common due-window, earliness and tardiness costs, and identical processing time jobs is studied. We focus on the setting of both (i) job-dependent earliness/tardiness job weights and (ii) parallel uniform machines. The objective is to find the job allocation to the machines and the job schedule, such that the total weighted earliness and tardiness cost is minimized. We study both cases of a non-restrictive (i.e. sufficiently late), and a restrictive due-window. For a given number of machines, the solutions of the problems studied here are obtained in polynomial time in the number of jobs.
