We transfer cold ^87 Rb atoms from a vapour cell chamber to a spatially separated UHV magneto-optical trap (MOT) with the assistance of a red-detuned optical guiding beam and a normal push beam. Efficient optical guiding of the cold atoms is observed within a small detuning window. A pulsed optical guiding beam enhances the transfer efficiency and hence allows us to collect more atoms in UHV MOT in a shorter time, which is favourable for our experiment of achieving Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). Besides the easy operation, another advantage of this optical guiding technique is also demonstrated such that slower atomic beams may be efficiently transferred along horizontal direction. This study is a direct application of the optical guiding technique as a powerful tool.  相似文献

We investigate the backscattering for converging beams in iron-doped lithium niobate crystals. Due to the nonlinear properties of the crystal, backscattering exhibits temporally fluctuating speckles that make a transition to the phase conjugate of the incident beam under certain circumstances. Our observation seems to point to a new kind of self-pumped phase conjugation in photorefractive media.  相似文献

In laser applications, resolutions beyond the diffraction limit can be obtained with a thin film of strong optical nonlinear effect. The optical index of the silicon thin film is modified with the incident laser beam as a function of the local field intensity n(r)E2(r). For ultrathin films of thickness d?λ, the transmitted light through the film forms a profile of annular rings. Therefore, the device can be related to the realization of super-resolution with annular pupils. Theoretical analysis shows that the focused light spot appears significantly reduced in comparison with the diffraction limit that is determined by the laser wavelength and the numerical aperture of the converging lens. Analysis on the additional optical transfer function due to the thin film confirms that the resolving power is improved in the high spatial frequency region.  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrate the trapping of ^85Rb atoms directly on a chip-size U-shaped magneto-optical trap (U-MOT). The trap includes a U-shaped wire on the chip, two bias magnetic field coils and laser beams. The capture volume of the U-MOT is theoretically calculated, and the trap is experimentally realized. With 2 A current applied to the U-shaped wire and 2-Gauss horizontal bias field, more than 2 × 10^6 atoms are trapped. In contrast with an ordinary mirror-MOT, this U-MOT captures atoms directly from the background, thus the trap size is greatly reduced. Based on this mini trap scheme, it is possible to realize a chip-size atom trap array for quantum information processing.  相似文献

We demonstrate cycle-slip-free electronic control of the carrier-envelope phase evolution of few-femtosecond light pulses, optical access to its sub-cycle fluctuations and suppression of the amplitude noise of a mode-locked laser by phase control. As a result, few-cycle light waveforms can now be synthesized with electric and magnetic fields reproducible to within a known phase error (<0.3 rad) and an unprecedentedly low amplitude error (<3%). The propagation velocity of optical wave fronts can be accelerated by the influence of gain saturation. We report systematic measurements for the specific case of Brillouin gain in optical fibers. A simplified analytic rate equation approach permits a qualitative understanding of the observations in terms of a pure amplitude nonlinearity. We point out that there is a close analogy to a mode-locked laser with gain saturation. Pursuing this analogy, we can explain why the changes in propagation velocity are hardly measurable for synchronously pumped lasers, but easily amount to several percent for amplifiers or lasers based on stimulated Brillouin scattering.  相似文献

The effect of focusing geometry on slope of carrier-envelope (CE) phase ФCE versus propagation distance from the focus in few-cycle laser pulses is investigated. The slope could be adjusted by changing the distance L between the waist of the incident beam and the lens. At the focus, 偏dФCE/O(Z/ZR) = 0 when L = 0, and 偏dФCE/偏d(z/zR) = -2 when L = ∞. The longer the distance L, the steeper the curve of the CE phase at the focus.  相似文献

Optical bistable behavior in a quasi-waveguide containing non-linear film has been experimentally investigated in several publications in the past years; however, the physical mechanism for optical bistability has not been theoretically explained. In the present letter, we propose a theoretical model and successfully explain the observed optical bistability of both the reflected light and the scattered light (m-lines) in a non-linear quasi-waveguide. The optical bistability in the non-linear quasi-waveguide is due to the scattering-type wavevector mismatch mechanism. Using the intensity distribution of interference fringes formed by a capillary filled with transparent liquid, the variations in refractive index (RI) of nonlinear optical materials, corresponding to change of the intensity at the centre of fringes for a period, were deduced. With this conclusion, we measured variations in RI of ethyl red (ER) solution excited by a 535-nm-15 mW-laser, and found that the change of RI is 0.00504 and the corresponding effective index of refraction is −1.06 × 10−9, for which the order of magnitude is same as that measured by Z-scan. The influences on the accuracy of the method, such as temperature, beam and fringe contrast, were analyzed. This is a novel and simple method for measuring the RI of nonlinear optical materials.  相似文献

We carry out the numerical simulations of femtosecond laser propagation with TEMoo mode, TEM10 mode and a beam combining both the modes in fused silica. It is found that the transverse size of plasma zones induced by laser pulses with the TEM10 mode is smaller than that induced by the TEM00 mode, while the longitudinal size is almost the same, and the saturated plasma density is higher. The transverse size, the longitudinal size and the ratio of the longitudinal to transverse size, for the beam combining both the modes, all could be reduced at the same time in comparison with the TEM00 mode under the same focusing conditions.  相似文献

We demonstrate theoretically that Li atoms can be transferred to states of a lower principal quantum number by exposing them to a frequency chirped microwave pulse. The population transfer of Li atoms from the n = 75 state to n = 70 with more than 90% efficiency is achieved by means of the sequential single-photon △n = -1 transitions. The calculation fully utilizes all of the available orbital angular momentum l states for a given n, and the interference pattern and population evolution dynamics of individual l states are analyzed in detail. Using the time-dependent multilevel approach, we describe the process reasonably well as a sequence of adiabatic rapid passages.  相似文献

Using the coherent density approach, we study the dark incoherent soliton splitting in biased photorefractive-photovoltaic crystals. We show that when the full width half maximum (FWHM) of the optical beam’s intensity is increased, the odd incoherent dark beam splits into an odd-number sequence of multiple dark stripes, whereas the even incoherent dark beam splits into an even-number sequence of multiple dark stripes. We find that when more incoherent solitons are generated, the separations between adjacent dark stripes become smaller and the stripes far away from the center become less visible and that for a given physical system and for a given splitting, the separations between adjacent dark stripes decrease with an increase in the intensity FWHM of the optical beam. On the other hand, the dark incoherent soliton splitting in biased photorefractive-photovoltaic crystals is the dark incoherent screening soliton splitting when the bulk photovoltaic effect is neglectable and the dark incoherent closed- and open-circuit photovoltaic soliton splitting when the external bias field is absent.  相似文献

Doped as well as nominally pure crystals of Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3), -Arginine Phosphate (LAP), Lithium Iodate (LiIO3), Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP), Lithium Formate (LFM), Beta-Barium Borate (BBO), and lithium tetra borate were grown and investigated for photorefractive effects at ultraviolet wavelengths down to 333 nm. In nominally undoped LiNbO3 crystals strong beam coupling effects were observed. In contrast to the visible we revealed a diffusion-dominated charge transport mechanism based on holes, and a low photovoltaic field in the order of 550 V/cm. With such a crystal we investigated the modulation transfer function of a lensless image projection system based on a phase conjugation scheme. A spatial frequency response beyond 2800 line pairs per millimeter was observed. Photorefractive beam coupling was also obtained in LiIO3. Light-induced scattering was detected in iron-doped LiIO3 whereas as-grown LAP material did not exhibit any observable photorefractive effects. However, 100 kV X-ray irradiation seems to induce material defects which can lead to weak light-induced scattering at 351 nm. In all other above-mentioned materials, doped as well as undoped, light-induced scattering could not be observed. On the other hand, this is appreciated in all the applications where the crystals are used as nonlinear material for optical frequency conversion.  相似文献

We report the realization of ytterbium magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating on the dipole-allowed ^1S0 - ^1P1 transition at 398.9nm. The MOT is loaded by a slowed atomic beam produced by a Zeeman slower. All seven stable isotopes of Yb atoms could be trapped separately at different laser detuning values. Over 10^7 174 Yb atoms are collected in the MOT, whereas the atom number of fermionic isotope ^171Yb is roughly 2.3 × 10^6 due to a lower abundance. Without the Zeeman slower the trapped atom numbers are one order of magnitude lower. Both the even and odd isotopes are recognized as excellent candidates of optical clock transition, so the cooling and trapping of ytterbium atoms by the blue MOT is an important step for building an optical clock.  相似文献

A nominally undoped LiNbO3 crystal with a slightly broadened absorption edge is used to study beam coupling effects in the UV at 351 nm. At this wavelength the crystal exhibits a diffusion-dominated charge transport mechanism, which allows steady state beam amplification of up to 700 times, comparable to BaTiO3 in the visible. The used crystal material was characterized by an absorption coefficient =2.68 cm–1 at 351 nm and a maximal gain coefficient =13.94 cm–1. This high gain value in the UV can be attributed to a hole diffusion-dominated charge transport mechanism together with a low bulk photovoltaic effect. We measured photovoltaic fields of the order of 550 V/cm.  相似文献

We propose a novel scheme to form one- and two-dimensional arrays of double-well optical dipole traps for cold atoms (or molecules) by using an optical system composed of a binary π-phase grating and a lens illuminated by a plane light wave, and study the relationship between the maximum intensity Imax of each optical well (or the maximum trapping potential Umax for ^85Rb atoms) and the relative aperture β (= α/f) of the lens. We also calculate the intensity gradients of each optical well and their curvatures, and estimate the spontaneous photon-scattering rate of trapped atom in each well, including Rayleigh and Raman scattering rates. Our study shows that the proposed 1D and 2D arrays of double-well traps can be used to prepare 1D and 2D novel optical lattices with cold atoms (or molecules), or form an all-optically integrated atom optical chip, or even to realize an array of all-optical double-well atomic (or molecular) Bose-Einstein condensates by optical-potential evaporative cooling, and so on.  相似文献

Solitary wave evolution of optical planar vortices in isotropie self-defoeusing photorefractive media is investigated in detail. We demonstrate that the formation of a planar vortex soliton intensively depends on the diameter and maximum intensity of the input vortex Seam. The exact solutions of planar vortex solitons are obtained due to the Petviashvili iteration method. It is found that, with the increasing soliton maximum intensity, the soliton core will be gradually diminished to a minimum value.  相似文献

An oscillator-amplifier XeCl laser system has been used to experimentally investigate the effectiveness of a liquid stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) mirror for correcting the spatial aberrations of broad-band laser radiation in a double-pass amplifier. It has been found that the SBS amplifier performance is strongly dependent on the intensity I p exciting the Brillouin medium. A good beam reconstruction has been attained at I p1GW/cm2, whereas highly aberrated output beams have been delivered by the SBS amplifier for I p>1 GW/cm2. By comparing the broad-band SBS amplifier performance to that of the same amplifier with a dielectrically coated flat mirror at one end, it has been found that the use of a SBS mirror is advantageous to obtain lower divergence output beams only for low energy pump beams (<1 mJ).  相似文献

Saturable Kerr nonlinearity is theoretically investigated by use of the top-hat beam Z-scan technique. The saturation intensity changes the nonlinear refractive profile and decreases the sensitivity of the Z-scan measurements, which were quantitatively analyzed. An empirical formula for the saturable Kerr nonlinearity, which gave the relationship between the light intensity and the peak-valley transmittance difference, was accomplished. A high-accuracy method to determine the nonlinear refractive index and the characteristic saturation intensity was proposed.  相似文献
