This paper presents a new dual network simplex algorithm for the minimum cost network flow problem. The algorithm works directly on the original capacitated network and runs in O(mn(m +n logn) logn) time for the network withn nodes andm arcs. This complexity is better than the complexity of Orlin, Plotkin and Tardos’ (1993) dual network simplex algorithm by a factor ofm/n.  相似文献

We present an algorithm to compute, inO(m + n log n) time, a maximum clique in circular-arc graphs (withnvertices andmedges) provided a circular-arc model of the graph is given. If the circular-arc endpoints are given in sorted order, the time complexity isO(m). The algorithm operates on the geometric structure of the circular arcs, radially sweeping their endpoints; it uses a very simple data structure consisting of doubly linked lists. Previously, the best time bound for this problem wasO(m log log n + n log n), using an algorithm that solved an independent subproblem for each of thencircular arcs. By using the radial-sweep technique, we need not solve each of these subproblems independently; thus we eliminate the log log nfactor from the running time of earlier algorithms. For vertex-weighted circular-arc graphs, it is possible to use our approach to obtain anO(m log log n + n log n) algorithm for finding a maximum-weight clique—which matches the best known algorithm.  相似文献

We show how to use polynomial and strongly polynomial capacity scaling algorithms for the transshipment problem to design a polynomial dual network simplex pivot rule. Our best pivoting strategy leads to an O(m 2 logn) bound on the number of pivots, wheren andm denotes the number of nodes and arcs in the input network. This paper presents a polynomial-time dual simplex algorithm for the generalized circulation problem. An efficient implementation of this algorithm is given that has a worst-case running time of O(m 2(m+nlogn)logB), where n is the number of nodes, m is the number of arcs and B is the largest integer used to represent the rational gain factors and integral capacities in the network. This running time is as fast as the running time of any combinatorial algorithm that has been proposed thus far for solving the generalized circulation problem. Recently, É. Tardos gave a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem and solved the open problem posed in 1972 by J. Edmonds and R.M. Karp. Her algorithm runs in O(m 2 T(m, n) logm) time, wherem is the number of arcs,n is the number of vertices, andT(m, n) is the time required for solving a maximum flow problem in a network withm arcs andn vertices. In the present paper, taking an approach that is a dual of Tardos's, we also give a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem. Our algorithm runs in O(m 2 S(m, n) logm) time and reduces the computational complexity, whereS(m, n) is the time required for solving a shortest path problem with a fixed origin in a network withm arcs,n vertices, and a nonnegative arc length function. The complexity is the same as that of Orlin's algorithm, recently developed by efficiently implementing the Edmonds-Karp scaling algorithm.  相似文献

We study the problem of coloring graphs in an online manner. The only known deterministic online graph coloring algorithm with a sublinear performance function was found by [9.], 319–325). Their algorithm colors graphs of chromatic number χ with no more than (2χn)/log* n colors, where n is the number of vertices. They point out that the performance can be improved slightly for graphs with bounded chromatic number. For three-chromatic graphs the number of colors used, for example, is O(n log log log n/log log n). We show that randomization helps in coloring graphs online. We present a simple randomized online algorithm to color graphs with expected number of colors O(2χχ2n(χ−2)/(χ−1)(log n)1/(χ−1)). For three-colorable graphs the expected number of colors our algorithm uses is . All our algorithms run in polynomial time. It is interesting to note that our algorithm compares well with the best known polynomial time offline algorithms. For instance, the best polynomial time algorithm known for three-colorable graphs, due to [4.] pp. 554–562). We also prove a lower bound of Ω((1/(χ − 1))((log n/(12(χ + 1))) − 1)χ−1) for the randomized model. No lower bound for the randomized model was previously known. For bounded χ, our result improves even the best known lower bound for the deterministic case: Ω((log n/log log n)χ−1), due to Noga Alon (personal communication, September 1989).  相似文献

We present a new network simplex pivot selection rule, which we call theminimum ratio pivot rule, and analyze the worst-case complexity of the resulting network simplex algorithm. We consider networks withn nodes,m arcs, integral arc capacities and integral supplies/demands of nodes. We define a {0, 1}-valued penalty for each arc of the network. The minimum ratio pivot rule is to select that eligible arc as the entering arc whose addition to the basis creates a cycle with the minimum cost-to-penalty ratio. We show that the so-defined primal network simplex algorithm solves minimum cost flow problem within O() pivots and in O(Δ(m + n logn)) time, whereΔ is any upper bound on the sum of all arc flows in every feasible flow. For assignment and shortest path problems, our algorithm runs in O(n 2) pivots and O(nm +n 2 logn) time.  相似文献

Developing a polynomial time primal network simplex algorithm for the minimum cost flow problem has been a long standing open problem. In this paper, we develop one such algorithm that runs in O(min(n 2m lognC, n 2m2 logn)) time, wheren is the number of nodes in the network,m is the number of arcs, andC denotes the maximum absolute arc costs if arc costs are integer and ∞ otherwise. We first introduce a pseudopolynomial variant of the network simplex algorithm called the “premultiplier algorithm”. We then develop a cost-scaling version of the premultiplier algorithm that solves the minimum cost flow problem in O(min(nm lognC, nm 2 logn)) pivots. With certain simple data structures, the average time per pivot can be shown to be O(n). We also show that the diameter of the network polytope is O(nm logn).  相似文献

This paper presents dual network simplex algorithms that require at most 2nm pivots and O(n 2 m) time for solving a maximum flow problem on a network ofn nodes andm arcs. Refined implementations of these algorithms and a related simplex variant that is not strictly speaking a dual simplex algorithm are shown to have a complexity of O(n 3). The algorithms are based on the concept of apreflow and depend upon the use of node labels that are underestimates of the distances from the nodes to the sink node in the extended residual graph associated with the current flow. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. We consider the problem of computing the minimum ofnvalues, and several well-known generalizations [prefix minima, range minima, and all nearest smaller values (ANSV)] for input elements drawn from the integer domain [1···s], wheresn. In this article we give simple and efficient algorithms for all of the preceding problems. These algorithms all takeO(log log log s) time using an optimal number of processors andO(nsε) space (for constant ε < 1) on the COMMON CRCW PRAM. The best known upper bounds for the range minima and ANSV problems were previouslyO(log log n) (using algorithms for unbounded domains). For the prefix minima and for the minimum problems, the improvement is with regard to the model of computation. We also prove a lower bound of Ω(log log n) for domain sizes = 2Ω(log n log log n). Since, forsat the lower end of this range, log log n = Ω(log log log s), this demonstrates that any algorithm running ino(log log log s) time must restrict the range ofson which it works.  相似文献

Recently, Fredman and Tarjan invented a new, especially efficient form of heap (priority queue). Their data structure, theFibonacci heap (or F-heap) supports arbitrary deletion inO(logn) amortized time and other heap operations inO(1) amortized time. In this paper we use F-heaps to obtain fast algorithms for finding minimum spanning trees in undirected and directed graphs. For an undirected graph containingn vertices andm edges, our minimum spanning tree algorithm runs inO(m logβ (m, n)) time, improved fromO((m, n)) time, whereβ(m, n)=min {i|log(i) nm/n}. Our minimum spanning tree algorithm for directed graphs runs inO(n logn + m) time, improved fromO(n log n +m log log log(m/n+2) n). We propose a primal network simplex algorithm for solving the maximum flow problem which chooses as the arc to enter the basis one that isclosest to the source node from amongst all possible candidates. We prove that this algorithm requires at mostnm pivots to solve a problem withn nodes andm arcs, and give implementations of it which run in O(n 2 m) time. Consider a set of n unit time jobs, each one having a release date, a due date, both nonnegative integers, and a weight, a positive real number. Given a set of m parallel machines, we describe an algorithm for finding schedules with minimum weighted number of tardy jobs. The complexity of the proposed algorithm is O(n2\frac(1+logm)m)O(n^{2}\frac{(1+\log m)}{m}) . The best previous algorithm for this problem has complexity O(mn 3) and employs network flow techniques. Our method is based on a characterization for schedules of this type and employs graph theoretic tools.  相似文献

We give a simple primal algorithm for the generalized maximum flow problem that repeatedly finds and cancels generalized augmenting paths (GAPs). We use ideas of Wallacher (A generalization of the minimum-mean cycle selection rule in cycle canceling algorithms, 1991) to find GAPs that have a good trade-off between the gain of the GAP and the residual capacity of its arcs; our algorithm may be viewed as a special case of Wayne’s algorithm for the generalized minimum-cost circulation problem (Wayne in Math Oper Res 27:445–459, 2002). Most previous algorithms for the generalized maximum flow problem are dual-based; the few previous primal algorithms (including Wayne in Math Oper Res 27:445–459, 2002) require subroutines to test the feasibility of linear programs with two variables per inequality (TVPIs). We give an O(mn) time algorithm for finding negative-cost GAPs which can be used in place of the TVPI tester. This yields an algorithm with O(m log(mB/ε)) iterations of O(mn) time to compute an ε-optimal flow, or O(m 2 log (mB)) iterations to compute an optimal flow, for an overall running time of O(m 3 nlog(mB)). The fastest known running time for this problem is , and is due to Radzik (Theor Comput Sci 312:75–97, 2004), building on earlier work of Goldfarb et al. (Math Oper Res 22:793–802, 1997). David P. We present a parallel randomized algorithm running on aCRCW PRAM, to determine whether two planar graphs are isomorphic, and if so to find the isomorphism. We assume that we have a tree of separators for each planar graph (which can be computed by known algorithms inO(log2 n) time withn1 + εprocessors, for any ε > 0). Ifnis the number of vertices, our algorithm takesO(log(n)) time with processors and with a probability of failure of 1/nat most. The algorithm needs 2 · log(m) − log(n) + O(log(n)) random bits. The number of random bits can be decreased toO(log(n)) by increasing the number of processors ton3/2 + ε, for any ε > 0. Our parallel algorithm has significantly improved processor efficiency, compared to the previous logarithmic time parallel algorithm of Miller and Reif (Siam J. We describe an O(n 4 hmin{logU,n 2logn}) capacity scaling algorithm for the minimum cost submodular flow problem. Our algorithm modifies and extends the Edmonds–Karp capacity scaling algorithm for minimum cost flow to solve the minimum cost submodular flow problem. The modification entails scaling a relaxation parameter δ. Capacities are relaxed by attaching a complete directed graph with uniform arc capacity δ in each scaling phase. We then modify a feasible submodular flow by relaxing the submodular constraints, so that complementary slackness is satisfied. This creates discrepancies between the boundary of the flow and the base polyhedron of a relaxed submodular function. To reduce these discrepancies, we use a variant of the successive shortest path algorithm that augments flow along minimum cost paths of residual capacity at least δ. The shortest augmenting path subroutine we use is a variant of Dijkstra’s algorithm modified to handle exchange capacity arcs efficiently. The result is a weakly polynomial time algorithm whose running time is better than any existing submodular flow algorithm when U is small and C is big. We also show how to use maximum mean cuts to make the algorithm strongly polynomial. The resulting algorithm is the first capacity scaling algorithm to match the current best strongly polynomial bound for submodular flow. We present new strongly polynomial algorithms for special cases of convex separable quadratic minimization over submodular constraints. The main results are: an O(NM log(N 2/M)) algorithm for the problemNetwork defined on a network onM arcs andN nodes; an O(n logn) algorithm for thetree problem onn variables; an O(n logn) algorithm for theNested problem, and a linear time algorithm for theGeneralized Upper Bound problem. Several pivot rules for the dual network simplex algorithm that enable it to solve a maximum flow problem on ann-node,m-arc network in at most 2nm pivots and O(n 2 m) time are presented. These rules are based on the concept of apreflow and depend upon the use of node labels which are either the lengths of a shortestpseudoaugmenting path from those nodes to the sink node orvalid underestimates of those lengths. The optimization models and algorithms with their implementations on flow over time problems have been an emerging field of research because of largely increasing human-created and natural disasters worldwide. For an optimal use of transportation network to shift affected people and normalize the disastrous situation as quickly and Efficiently as possible, contraflow configuration is one of the highly applicable operations research (OR) models. It increases the outbound road capacities by reversing the direction of arcs towards the safe destinations that not only minimize the congestion and increase the flow but also decrease the evacuation time significantly. In this paper, we sketch the state of quickest flow solutions and solve the quickest contraflow problem with constant transit times on arcs proving that the problem can be solved in strongly polynomial time O(nm2(log n)2), where n and m are number of nodes and number of arcs, respectively in the network. This contraflow solution has the same computational time bound as that of the best min-cost flow solution. Moreover, we also introduce the contraflow approach with load dependent transit times on arcs and present an Efficient algorithm to solve the quickest contraflow problem approximately. Supporting the claim, our computational experiments on Kathmandu road network and on randomly generated instances perform very well matching the theoretical results. For sufficiently large number of evacuees, about double flow can be shifted with the same evacuation time and about half time is sufficient to push the given flow value with contraflow reconfiguration.  相似文献

The phase I maximum flow and most positive cut methods are used to solve the feasibility problem. Both of these methods take one maximum flow computation. Thus the feasibility problem can be solved using maximum flow algorithms. Let n and m be the number of nodes and arcs, respectively. In this paper, we present an algorithm to solve the feasibility problem with integer lower and upper bounds. The running time of our algorithm is O(mn log (nU)), where U is the value of maximum upper bound. Our algorithm improves the O(m2 log (nU))-time algorithm in [12]. Hence the current algorithm improves the running time in [12] by a factor of n. Sleator and Goldberg’s algorithm is one of the well-known maximum flow algorithms, which runs in O(mn log n) time, see [5]. Under similarity assumption [11], our algorithm runs in O(mn log n) time, which is the running time of Sleator and Goldberg’s algorithm. The merit of our algorithm is that, in the case of infeasibility of the given network, it not only diagnoses infeasibility but also presents some information that is useful to modeler in estimating the maximum cost of adjusting the infeasible network.  相似文献
