The interaction of methyl violet, a cationic dye, with various surfactants, viz. anionic (SDS), nonionic (Triton X-100), and cationic (CTAB), has been investigated spectrophotometrically in submicellar and micellar concentration range. While in the submicellar concentration region of SDS the higher aggregates of the dye are found, in the micellar concentration region the monomer of the dye predominates. With nonionic surfactant the dye is solubilized primarily as the monomer. CTAB produces no perturbation to the visible spectra of the dye. In the presence of strong electrolytes such as NaNO(3) and NaCl the dye aggregates are formed at a much lower SDS concentrations. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

CuO nanocrystalline powder has been synthesized by a sol?gel auto combustion route with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as cationic surfactant, and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as anionic surfactant. The powder samples are characterized by TGA/DTA, XRD, FESEM, and TEM techniques. Thermal analysis of the dried gel samples shows that addition of surfactant in the precursor increases the heat of reaction, which is evolved in the decomposition of metal citrate complex. The CTAB and SDS addition in the reaction mixture lowers the average crystallite size to few tens of nanometer. Surfactant doping in precursor causes a variation in lattice strain and changes to its type to compressive. CuO nanoparticles are bound together into facets–like weakly aggregated clusters, as indicated by FESEM images. TEM micrographs indicate the porous, nearly spherical particles having crystallite size around 7 and 18 nm for CTAB and SDS surfactant assisted CuO samples respectively. CuO nanoparticles assembled as thick film have been tested for their response to 100 ppm ammonia gas at room temperature. Cationic surfactant assisted sample shows maximum response to ammonia as compared to anionic surfactant. The CTAB assisted sensor shows almost completes recovery in 500 s whereas SDS assisted sample shows 75% recovery in the same time. The ammonia response of the films obeys the Elovich equation. The response rate of sensor is found to be maximum for CTAB assisted CuO films as compared to other samples. The kinetics of the response reaction shows that the ionic surfactants assisted CuO follows second order reaction kinetics.  相似文献

Mixtures of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) form more stable coatings in fused-silica capillaries than CTAB alone. The reversed electroosmotic flow (EOF) generated by CTAB/SDS mixtures remains stable for over 80 min after removal of the surfactants from the buffer. Enhanced stability (relative to CTAB alone) was found even when the ratio of SDS to CTAB was as low as 1%. This greater coating stability is attributed to the structural transition from adsorbed micelle to bilayer, which is induced by addition of SDS. Separation of a mixture of basic proteins yielded efficiencies of 364 000-562 000 plates/m and recoveries ranging from 85% to 98%. Migration time reproducibility was less than 0.9% relative standard deviation (RSD) from run to run and less than 2.6% RSD from day to day.  相似文献

The aggregation/deaggregation of chlorin p6 with the surfactants CTAB, SDS, and TX 100 have been studied by using absorption, fluorescence, and light scattering techniques. The ionic surfactants are found to cause aggregation of fluorophore at submicellar concentrations. The aggregates dissolve at higher surfactant concentrations to yield micellized monomers. This is rationalized by the interplay of electrostatic and hydrophobic effects. A prominent pH effect is observed in the ionic surfactant induced aggregation process as the charge on the fluorophore is controlled by the pH of the medium. Interestingly, the neutral TX-100 also induces aggregation of chlorin p6 at low concentrations, indicating that hydrophobic effects by themselves can cause aggregation unless there is a hindrance by repulsive electrostatic effects.  相似文献

The effects of nonionic surfactants OP-10 and OP-30 (polyoxyethylated octyl phenols with 10 and 30 oxyethylene groups, respectively) in surfactant mixtures with ionic surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) have been investigated by a conductometric method in conjunction with fluorescence, surface tension, zeta potential, and DLS measurements. The interactions are found to be antagonistic in nature for each of the systems; i.e., micellization of CTAB as well as SDS is hindered on addition of the nonionic surfactants. The antagonism is found to be more prominent in the presence of OP-10 compared to that of OP-30. Two types of mechanistic paths, path A operating below the critical micellar concentration and path B operating beyond the critical micellar concentration of nonionic surfactants, have been suggested. In path A, the retardation in micellization has been attributed to a decrease in monomeric concentration of the ionic surfactants from solution as a result of the formation of a hydrophobic complex between nonionic and ionic surfactants. In path B, the decrease in monomer concentration is due to the solubilization of the ionic surfactant in micelles of the nonionic surfactants in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. A theoretical treatment to the interaction in each ionic-nonionic pair yields a positive value of the interaction parameter supporting the concept of antagonism. The formation of the hydrophobic complex is supported by fluorescence and surface tension measurements. A schematic representation of the stabilization of these hydrophobic complexes has been suggested. The association of ionic surfactants by nonionic micelles is suggested by zeta potential and DLS studies.  相似文献

Surfactant based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is an interesting area of research for several petroleum researchers. In the present work, individual and mixed systems of anionic and cationic surfactants consisting of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in different molar ratios were tested for their synergistic effect on the crude oil-water interfacial tension (IFT) and enhanced oil recovery performance. The combination of these two surfactant systems showed a higher surface activity as compared to individual surfactants. The effect of mixed surfactant systems on the IFT and critical micellar concentration (CMC) is strongly depends on molar ratios of the two surfactant. Much lower CMC values were observed in case of mixed surfactant systems prepared at different molar ratios as compared to individual surfactant systems. The lowest CMC value was found when the molar concentration of SDS was higher than the CTAB. When the individual and mixed surfacant systems were tested for EOR performance through flooding experiments, higher ultimate oil recovery was obtained from mixed surfactant flooding compared to individual surfactants. Combination of SDS and CTAB or probably other anionic-cationic surfactants show synergism with substantial ability to reduce crude oil water IFT and can be a promising EOR method.

The effects of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodiumdodecyl sulphate (SDS) and Triton X-100 (TX-100) on the oxidative degradation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) by MnO4 have been studied spectrophotometrically at 525 and 420 nm, respectively. It was found that cationic surfactant catalyse the reaction rate while anionic and non-ionic have no effect. The premicellar environment of CTAB strongly catalyses the reaction rate which may be due to the favorable electrostatic binding of both reactants (MnO4 and EDTA) with the positive head groups of the CTAB aggregates. The influence of different parameters such as [MnO4], [EDTA], [H+] and [surfactants] were also considered. The reaction follows the first- and fractional-order kinetics with respect to [MnO4] and [EDTA]. The proposed mechanism and the derived rate law are consistent with the observed kinetics.  相似文献

Control of the self-motion of a camphanic acid disk on water was investigated upon the addition of different kinds of surfactants (Triton X-100 and Brij58 as neutral surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an anionic surfactant) to the water phase. With an increase in the concentration of surfactant, continuous motion changed to no motion via intermittent motion (repetition between motion and rest), and the concentration regions of these motions were different among these surfactants. Although the concentration regions of these motions were determined by the surface tension for neutral surfactants, they were different than those for CTAB and SDS. These characteristics of self-motion are discussed in relation to the surface tension, depending on the concentration of individual surfactants, and the hydrophilic effect of the surfactants.  相似文献

The properties of anionic-rich and cationic-rich mixtures of CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) and SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) were investigated with conductometry and surface tension measurements and by determining the surfactant NMR self-diffusion coefficients. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface tension reduction effectiveness(gamma(CAC)), surface excess(Gamma(max)), and mean molecular surface area (A(min)) were determined from plots of the surface tension (gamma) as a function of the total surfactant concentration. The compositions of the adsorbed films (Z) and aggregates (chi) were estimated by using regular solution theory, and then the interaction parameters in the aggregates (beta) and the adsorbed film phases (beta(sigma)) were calculated. The results showed that the synergism between the surfactants enhances the formation of mixed aggregates and reduces the surface tension. Further, the nature and strength of the interaction between the surfactants in the mixtures were obtained by calculating the values of the following parameters: the interaction parameter, beta, the size parameter, rho, and the nonrandom mixing parameter, P*. These results indicate that in ionic surfactant mixtures the optimized packing parameter has the highest value and that the size parameter can be used to account for deviations from the predictions of regular solution theory. It was concluded that, for planar air/aqueous interfaces and aggregation systems, this nonideality increases as the temperature increases. This trend is attributed to the increased dehydration of the surfactant head groups that results from increases in temperature. Further, our conductometry measurements show that the counterion binding number of mixed micelles formed in mixtures with a high CTAB content is different to those with a high SDS content. This difference is due to either their different aggregation sizes or the different interactions between the head groups and the counterions.  相似文献

Precipitation or coprecipitation of polyelectrolytes has been largely investigated. However, the precipitation of polyelectrolytes via addition of charged and non‐charged surfactants has not been systematically studied and reported. Consequently, the aim of this work is to investigate the effect of different surfactants (anionic, cationic, non‐charged and zwitterionic) on the precipitation of cationic and anionic polymethylmethacrylate polymers (Eudragit). The surfactants effect has been investigated as a function of their concentration. Special attention has been dedicated to the CMC range and to the colloidal characterization of the formed dispersions. Moreover, the effect of salt (NaCl) and pH was also addressed. It is pointed out that non‐ionic and zwitterionic surfactants do not interact with charged Eudragit E100 and L100. For oppositely charged Eudragit E100/SDS and Eudragit L100/CTAB, precipitation occurs, and the obtained dispersions have been characterized in terms of particle size distribution and zeta potential. It was established that the binding of SDS molecules to Eudragit E100 polymer chains is made through the negative charges of the surfactant heads under the CMC value whereas binding of CTAB to Eudragit L100 chains is made at a CTAB concentration 5 times above its CMC. For Eudragit E100/SDS system, a more acidic medium induces aggregation. A same result was observed for the Eudragit L100/CTAB at a more basic pH. Moreover, it was observed that increasing salt concentration (higher than 100 mM) led to aggregation as generally observed for polycations/anionic surfactant systems.  相似文献

The self-assembly of the protein hydrophobin, HFBII, and its self-assembly with cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants hexadecylterimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB, sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and hexaethylene monododecyl ether, C(12)E(6), in aqueous solution have been studied by small-angle neutron scattering, SANS. HFBII self-assembles in solution as small globular aggregates, consistent with the formation of trimers or tetramers. Its self-assembly is not substantially affected by the pH or electrolytes. In the presence of CTAB, SDS, or C(12)E(6), HFBII/surfactant complexes are formed. The structure of the HFBII/surfactant complexes has been identified using contrast variation and is in the form of HFBII molecules bound to the outer surface of globular surfactant micelles. The binding of HFBII decreases the surfactant micelle aggregation number for increasing HFBII concentration in solution, and the number of hydrophobin molecules bound/micelle increases.  相似文献

In a recent study, we showed that the surfactant 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylethanolamine-N-[methoxy(polyethylene glycol)-2000 (DSPE-PEG2000) induced mixed micelles of either threadlike or discoidal shape when mixed with different types of lipids. In this study, we have exchanged the PEG-lipid for the more conventional surfactants octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Cryo-TEM investigations show that also these surfactants are able to induce the formation of long-lived discoidal micelles. Generally, the preference for either discoidal or threadlike micelles can be tuned by the choice of lipids and environmental conditions in much the same way as observed for the lipid/PEG-lipid system. Our investigation showed, furthermore, that the choice of surfactant may influence the type of mixed micelles formed. It is argued that the formation of discoidal rather than threadlike micelles may be rationalized as an effect of increasing bending rigidity. Our detailed theoretical model calculations show that the bending rigidity becomes significantly raised for aggregates formed by an ionic rather than a nonionic surfactant.  相似文献

An anionic/cationic mixed surfactant aqueous system of surfactin and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) at different molar ratios was studied by surface tension and fluorescence methods (pH 8.0). Various parameters that included critical micelle concentration (cmc), micellar composition (X 1), and interaction parameter (β m) as well as thermodynamic properties of mixed micelles were determined. The β m was found to be negative and the mixed system was found to have much lower cmc than pure surfactant systems. There exits synergism between anionic surfactin and cationic CTAB surfactants. The degree of participation of surfactin in the formation of mixed micelle changes with mixing ratio of the two surfactants. The results of aggregation number, fluorescence anisotropy, and viscosity indicate that more packed and larger aggregates were formed from mixed surfactants than unmixed, and the mixed system may be able to form vesicle spontaneously at high molar fraction of surfactin.  相似文献

The interaction of Procaine hydrochloride (PC) with cationic, anionic and non-ionic surfactants; cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and triton X-100, were investigated. The effect of ionic and non-ionic micelles on solubilization of Procaine in aqueous micellar solution of SDS, CTAB and triton X-100 were studied at pH 6.8 and 29°C using absorption spectrophotometry. By using pseudo-phase model, the partition coefficient between the bulk water and micelles, Kx, was calculated. The results showed that the micelles of CTAB enhanced the solubility of Procaine higher than SDS micelles (Kx = 96 and 166 for SDS and CTAB micelles, respectively) but triton X-100 did not enhanced the solubility of drug because of weak interaction with Procaine. From the resulting binding constant for Procaine-ionic surfactants interactions (Kb = 175 and 128 for SDS and CTAB surfactants, respectively), it was concluded that both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions affect the interaction of surfactants with cationic procaine. Electrostatic interactions have a great role in the binding and consequently distribution of Procaine in micelle/water phases. These interactions for anionic surfactant (SDS) are higher than for cationic surfactant (CTAB). Gibbs free energy of binding and distribution of procaine between the bulk water and studied surfactant micelles were calculated.   相似文献

Surfactants can be introduced into the environment through wastewater or by direct contamination. Understanding the fate and transport of surfactants in the environment is important in assessing their role as pollutants. Humic substances are complex heterogeneous mixtures of decomposition products of natural organic materials. They are environmentally important because they are known to solubilize and transport organic pollutants. Therefore humic substances are likely to affect the environmental fate of surfactants. Diffusion coefficients measured with pulsed-field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are used in this study to examine the intermolecular interactions of the surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the presence of various humic substances. These results indicate that humic substances enhance the aggregation of SDS prior to micellization with a more pronounced effect observed for the more hydrophobic humic materials. The positively charged surfactant CTAB forms stable ion pairs with the humic substances.  相似文献

In this paper we report the experimental observations of the effects of various surfactants on the oscillations of the ferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The oscillations are followed by observing the change in absorbance at 510 nm due to ferroin in a well-stirred closed BZ reacting system. We have used sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the anionic surfactant, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the cationic surfactant, Triton X-100 as the neutral surfactant, and 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio)]-1-propanesulfonate (CHAPS) as the zwitterionic surfactant. In general, we observed that there is a change in the oscillation behavior in the presence of each of these surfactants above their critical micellar concentrations. For different surfactants, the time-dependent evolution of the oscillations is found to be characteristic of the surfactant. The results of our study suggest that the evolution of oscillations is most regular in the presence of micelles of SDS.  相似文献

Control of EOF in microfluidic devices is essential in applications such as protein/DNA sizing and high‐throughput drug screening. With the growing popularity of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the substrate for polymeric‐based microfludics, it is important to understand the effect of surfactants on EOF in these devices. In this article, we present an extensive investigation exploring changes in EOF rate induced by SDS, polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (Brij35) and CTAB in PMMA microfluidic capillaries. In a standard protein buffer (Tris‐Glycine), PMMA capillaries exhibited a cathodic EOF with measured mobility of 1.54 ± 0.1 (× 10?4 cm2/V.s). In the presence of surfactant below a critical concentration, EOF was independent of surfactant concentration. At high concentrations of surfactants, the electroosmotic mobility was found to linearly increase/decrease as the logarithm of concentration before reaching a constant value. With SDS, the EOF increased by 257% (compared to buffer), while it was decreased by 238% with CTAB. In the case of Brij35, the electroosmotic mobility was reduced by 70%. In a binary surfactant system of SDS/CTAB and SDS/Brij35, addition of oppositely charged CTAB reduced the SDS‐induced EOF more effectively compared to nonionic Brij35. We propose possible mechanisms that explain the observed changes in EOF and zeta potential values. Use of neutral polymer coatings in combination with SDS resulted in 50% reduction in the electroosmotic mobility with 0.1% hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), while including 2% poly (N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) had no effect. These results will potentially contribute to the development of PMMA‐based microfluidic devices.  相似文献

The polymerization of acrylamide in mixed micellar solutions of surfactants, initiated by NaHSO3 has been studied at 20 and 3Q° C with time variable method of thermokinetics for 1. 5-order reaction. The results indicate that the mixed micellar systems of cationic or anionic with zwitterionic surfactants (SLS/ CTAB, SLS/ TTAB, SLS/ SDS) and cationic with nonionic surfactants (Brij 357sol; CTAB, Bri-J35/TTAB, Brij35/ DTAB) have catalytic effect on the polymerization in the order, at 20° C. SLS/ SDS SLS/ TTAB SLS/ CTAB Brij35/ CTAB at 30° C SLS/ SDS SLS/ TTAB≈ / CTAB Bri-j35/ DTAB= sBrij35/ TTAB as Brij35/ CTAB, while Brij35/ SDS mixed micellar system has inhibition. These effects are attributed to the effect of the Stern layer of mixed micelles on the step of initiator (HSOT) to form free radical.  相似文献

Three surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyoxyethylene-80-sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80), were used to control the growth of CaCO3 crystals by carbonation route using Ca(OH)2 and compressed CO2. The obtained CaCO3 particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The effects of surfactants on the morphology of the particles were studied. It was demonstrated that Tween 80 and SDS have obvious effect on the morphology of CaCO3 particles, while CTAB does not affect morphology considerably. The possible mechanism has been discussed on the basis of the binding of the surfactants to the certain face of the crystals.  相似文献
