The dynamics of soot formation in turbulent ethylene-air nonpremixed counterflow flames is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS) with a semi-empirical soot model and the discrete ordinate method (DOM) as a radiation solver. Transient characteristics of soot behavior are studies by a model problem of flame interaction with turbulence inflow at various intensities. The interaction between soot and turbulence reveals that the soot volume fraction depends on the combined effects of the local conditions of flow, temperature, and fuel concentration, while the soot number density depends predominantly on the high temperature regions. Depending on the relative strength between mixing and reaction, the effects of turbulence on the soot formation lead to three distinct paths in deviating the data points away from the laminar flame conditions. It is found that turbulence has twofold effects of increasing the overall soot yield by generating additional flame volume and of reducing soot by dissipating soot pockets out of high-temperature regions. The relative importance between the two effects depends on the relative length scales of turbulence and flame, suggesting that a nonmonotonic response of soot yield to turbulence level may be expected in turbulent combustion.  相似文献

Pilot flames, created by additional injectors of pure fuel, are often used in turbulent burners to enhance flame stabilization and reduce combustion instabilities. The exact mechanisms through which these additional rich zones modify the flame anchoring location and the combustion dynamics are often difficult to identify, especially when they include unsteady hydrodynamic motion. This study presents Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of the reacting flow within a large-scale gas turbine burner for two different cases of piloting, where either 2 or 6% of the total methane used in the burner is injected through additional pilot flame lines. For each case, LES shows how the pilot fuel injection affects both flame stabilization and flame stability. The 6% case leads to a stable flame and limited hydrodynamic perturbations in the initial flame zone. The 2% case is less stable, with a small-lift-off of the flame and a Precessing Vortex Core (PVC) in the cold stabilization zone. This PVC traps some of the lean cold gases issuing from the pilot passage stream, changes the flame stabilization point and induces instability.  相似文献

Level-set G-equation and stationary flamelet chemistry are used in large eddy simulation of a propane/air premixed turbulent flame stabilized by a bluff body. The aim was to study the interaction between the flame front and turbulent eddies, and in particular to examine the effect of sub-grid scale (SGS) eddies on the wrinkling of the flame surface. The results indicated that the two types of turbulence eddies—the resolved large scale eddies and the unresolved SGS eddies—have different effects on the flame. The fluctuation of the flame surface, which is responsible for the broadening of the time averaged mean flame brush by turbulence, depends on the large resolved turbulence eddies. Time averaged mean flow velocity, temperature, and major species concentrations mainly depend on the large scale resolved eddies. The unresolved SGS eddies contribute to the wrinkling at the SGS level and play an important role in the enhancement of the propagation speed of the resolved flame front. In addition, the spatially filtered intermediate species, such as radicals, and the spatially filtered reaction rates strongly depend on the small SGS eddies. The asymptotic behavior of flame wrinkling by the SGS eddies, with respect to the decrease in filter size and grid size, is investigated further using a simplified level-set equation in a model shear flow. It is shown that to minimize the influence of the SGS eddies, fine grid and filter size may have to be used.  相似文献

Much progress has been made in radiative heat transfer modelling with respect to the treatment of nongrey radiation from both gas-phase species and soot particles, while radiation modelling in turbulent flame simulations is still in its infancy. Aiming at reducing this gap, this paper introduces state-of-the-art models of gas-phase and soot radiation to turbulent flame simulations. The full-spectrum k-distribution method (M.F. Modest, 2003, Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy & Radiative Transfer, 76, 69–83) is implemented into a three-dimensional unstructured computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for nongrey radiation modelling. The mixture full-spectrum k-distributions including nongrey absorbing soot particles are constructed from a narrow-band k-distribution database created for individual gas-phase species, and an efficient scheme is employed for their construction in CFD simulations. A detailed reaction mechanism including NO x and soot kinetics is used to predict flame structure, and a detailed soot model using a method of moments is employed to determine soot particle size distributions. A spherical harmonic P1 approximation is invoked to solve the radiative transfer equation. An oxygen-enriched, turbulent, nonpremixed jet flame is simulated, which features large concentrations of gas-phase radiating species and soot particles. Nongrey soot modelling is shown to be of greater importance than nongrey gas modelling in sooty flame simulations, with grey soot models producing large errors. The nongrey treatment of soot strongly influences flame temperatures in the upstream and the flame-tip region and is essential for accurate predictions of NO. The nongrey treatment of gases, however, weakly influences upstream flame temperatures and, therefore, has only a small effect on NO predictions. The effect of nongrey soot radiation on flame temperature is also substantial in downstream regions where the soot concentration is small. Limitations of the P1 approximation are discussed for the jet flame configuration; the P1 approximation yields large errors in the spatial distribution of the computed radiative heat flux for highly anisotropic radiation fields such as those in flames with localized, near-opaque soot regions.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation (LES) is conducted of the Sandia Flame D [Proc. Combust. Inst. 27 (1998) 1087, Sandia National Laboratories (2004)], which is a turbulent piloted nonpremixed methane jet flame. The subgrid scale (SGS) closure is based on the scalar filtered mass density function (SFMDF) methodology [J. Fluid Mech. 401 (1999) 85]. The SFMDF is basically the mass weighted probability density function (PDF) of the SGS scalar quantities [Turbulent Flows (2000)]. For this flame (which exhibits little local extinction), a simple flamelet model is used to relate the instantaneous composition to the mixture fraction. The modelled SFMDF transport equation is solved by a hybrid finite-difference/Monte Carlo scheme. This is the first LES of a realistic turbulent flame using the transported PDF method as the SGS closure. The results via this method capture important features of the flame as observed experimentally.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation of turbulent combustion systems   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
This paper reviews recent and ongoing work on numerical models for turbulent combustion systems based on a classical LES approach. The work is confined to single-phase reacting flows. First, important physico-chemical features of combustion-LES are discussed along with several aspects of overall LES models. Subsequently, some numerical issues, in particular questions associated with the reliability of LES results, are outlined. The details of chemistry, its reduction, and tabulation are not addressed here. Second, two illustrative applications dealing with non-premixed and premixed flame configurations are presented. The results show that combustion-LES is able to provide predictions very close to measured data for configurations where the flow is governed by large turbulent structures. To meet the future demands, new key challenges in specific modelling areas are suggested, and opportunities for advancements in combustion-LES techniques are highlighted. From a predictive point of view, the main target must be to provide a reliable method to aid combustion safety studies and the design of combustion systems of practical importance.  相似文献

The blowout behavior of inclined nonpremixed turbulent jet flames is investigated by varying the jet inclined angle in the range of -90° to 90° The critical jet velocity at blow-out limit is quantified experimentally for various nozzle diameters, different fuels and inclined angles. Numerical simulations are performed to emphasize the flow field difference for the positive and negative inclined angles. Physical modeling is conducted to incorporate the effect of the inclined angle on blow-out behavior. Major findings include: (1) The negatively inclined jet flames show more intense yellow luminosity with larger sooting zones than the positively inclined jet flames; (2) The blowout limit decreases appreciably with the jet inclined angle for the negatively inclined flames, while for the positively inclined jet flames, this decrease is relatively small; (3) Physical analysis of the flow development of inclined jets is conducted, indicating the centerline velocity along the jet trajectory decreases faster for the flame with smaller inclined angle. And the decrease rate is relatively larger for the negatively inclined jet flames; (4) Based on the analysis of the flow development as well as the characteristic velocity with the inclined angle variation, a model based on the Damköhler number (Da) accounting for the effect of jet inclined angle is developed to characterize the blowout limits of inclined jet flames. The proposed model successfully correlates the experimental data. The present findings provide new data and a basic scaling law for the blowout limit of nonpremixed inclined turbulent jet flames, revealing the effect of the relative angle between the jet momentum and buoyancy.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation of bluff-body stabilized swirling non-premixed flames   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Large eddy simulations (LES) using a subgrid mixing and combustion model are carried out to study two bluff-body stabilized swirling non-premixed flames (SM1 and SMA2). The similarities and differences between the two flames are highlighted and discussed. Flow features, such as, the recirculation zone (RZ) size and the flame structure are captured accurately in both cases. The SM1 flame shows a toroidal RZ just behind the bluff body and a vortex breakdown bubble (VBB) downstream. In addition, a highly rotational non-recirculating region in-between the RZ and VBB is observed as well. On the other hand, the SMA2 shows a single elongated recirculation zone downstream the bluff body. Flame necking is observed downstream the bluff body for the SM1 flame but not for the SMA2 flame. The time-averaged velocity and temperature comparison also shows reasonable agreement. The study shows that the sensitivity of the flame structure to inflow conditions can be captured in the present LES without requiring any model changes.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations (LESs) of turbulent horizontal buoyant jets are carried out using a high-order numerical method and Sigma subgrid-scale (SGS) eddy-viscosity model, for a number of different Reynolds (Re) and Richardson (Ri) numbers. Simulations at previous experimental flow conditions (Re = 3200, 24, 000 and Ri = 0, 0.01) are carried out first, and the results are found to be qualitatively and quantitatively similar to the experimental results, thus validating the numerical methodology. The effect of varying Ri (values 2×10?4, 0.001, 0.005, and 0.01) and Re (3200 and 24, 000) is studied next. The presence of stable stratification on one side and unstable stratification on the other side of the jet centreline leads to an asymmetric development of horizontal buoyant jets. It is found that this asymmetry, the total radial spread and the vertical deflection are significantly affected by Ri, while Re affects only the radial asymmetry. The need for developing improved integral models, accounting for this asymmetry, is pointed out. Turbulent production and dissipation rates are investigated, and are found to be symmetric in the horizontal plane, but asymmetric in the mid-vertical plane. A previously proposed model, for correlation between the vertical component of the fluctuating scalar flux vector and the vertical cross-correlation component of the Reynolds tensor, is modified based on the current LES results. Instantaneous scalar and velocity fields are analysed to reveal the structure of horizontal buoyant jets. Similar to the developed turbulent jet, the flow close to the nozzle too is found to be markedly different in the stable and unstable stratification regions. Persistent coherent vortex rings are found in the stable stratification region, while intermittent breakdown of vortex rings into small-scale structures is observed in the unstable stratification region. Similarities and differences between the flow structures in the horizontal buoyant jet configuration and those in the jet in crossflow configuration are discussed. Finally, a dynamic mode decomposition analysis is carried out, which indicates that the flow in the unstable stratification region is more energetic and prone to instabilities, as compared to the flow in the stable stratification region.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations (LES) of the Sandia/Sydney swirl burners (SM1 and SMA1) and the Sandia/Darmstadt piloted jet diffusion flame (Flame D) are performed. These flames are part of the database of turbulent reacting flows widely considered as benchmark test cases for validating turbulent-combustion models. In the simulations presented in this paper, the subgrid scale (SGS) closure model adopted for turbulence-chemistry interactions is based on the transport filtered density function (FDF) model. In the FDF model, the transport equation for the joint probability density function (PDF) of scalars is solved. The main advantage of this model is that the filtered reaction rates can be exactly computed. However, the density field, computed directly from the FDF solver and needed in the hydrodynamic equations, is noisy and causes numerical instability. Two numerical approaches that yield a smooth density field are examined. The two methods are based on transport equations for specific sensible enthalpy (hs) and RT, where R is the gas constant and T is the temperature. Consistency of the two methods is assessed in a bluff-body configuration using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methodology in conjunction with the transported PDF method. It is observed that the hs method is superior to the RT method. Both methods are used in LES of the SM1 burner. In the near-field region, the hs method produces better predictions of temperature. However, in the far-field region, both methods show deviation from data. Simulations of the SMA1 burner and Flame D are also presented using the hs method. Some deficiencies are seen in the predictions of the SMA1 burner that may be related to the simple chemical kinetics model and mixing model used in the simulations. Simulations of Flame D show good agreement with data. These results indicate that, while further improvements to the methodology are needed, the LES/FDF method has the potential to accurately predict complex turbulent flames.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent free round jet submerged in water has been performed at Reynolds number Re = 25 000. LES results are compared against the PIV measurements data for the same flow configuration. The processes of the mixing layer formation in the jet initial region and its evolution down-stream have been studied with the analysts of turbulent power spectra. The effect of the subgrid Smagorinsky model coefficient C s on the jet hydrodynamics has been studied. Spectral optical techniques are combined to characterise the distribution of large-molecule soot precursors, nanoparticles of organic carbon, and soot in two turbulent non-premixed ethylene flames with differing residence times. Laser-induced fluorescence, laser-induced incandescence and light scattering are used to define distributions across the particle size distribution. From the scattering and laser-induced emission measurements it appears that two classes of particles are formed. The first ones are preferentially formed in the fuel-rich region of the flame closer to the nozzle, have sizes of the order of few nanometers but are not fully solid particles, because the constituent molecules still maintain their individual identity exhibiting strong broadband fluorescence in the UV. The second class of particles constituted by solid particles, with sizes of the order of tens of nanometers are able to absorb a sufficient number of photons to be heated to incandescent temperatures. These larger particles are formed at larger residence times in the flame since they are the result of slow growth processes such as coagulation or carbonization. The flames are also modeled in order to produce mixture fraction maps. A new discovery is that nanoparticles of organic carbon concentration, unlike soot, does correlate well with mixture fraction, independent of position in the flame. This is likely to be a significant benefit to future modelling of soot inception processes in turbulent non-premixed flames.  相似文献
