This study investigates the low- and high-temperature ignition and combustion processes in a high-pressure spray flame of n-dodecane using simultaneous 50-kHz formaldehyde (HCHO) planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) and 100-kHz schlieren imaging. The PLIF measurements were facilitated through the use of a pulse-burst-mode Nd:YAG laser, producing a 355-nm pulse-train with 300 pulses at 70 mJ/pulse, separated by 20-µs, in a 6-ms burst. The high-speed HCHO PLIF signal was imaged using a non-intensified CMOS camera with dynamic background emission correction. The acquisition rate of this HCHO PLIF diagnostic is unique to the research community, and when combined with high-speed schlieren imaging, provides unprecedented opportunity for analysis of the spatiotemporal evolution of fuel jet penetration and low- and high-temperature ignition processes relevant to internal combustion engine conditions. The present experiments are conducted in the Sandia constant-volume preburn vessel equipped with a new Spray A injector. The influences of ambient conditions are examined on the ignition delay times of the two-stage ignition events, HCHO structures, and lift-off length values. Consistent with past studies of traditional Spray A flames, the formation of HCHO is first observed in the jet peripheries where the equivalence ratio (Φ) is expected to be leaner and hotter and then grows in size and in intensity downstream into the jet core where Φ is expected to be richer and colder. The measurements demonstrate that the formation and propagation of HCHO from the leaner to richer region leads to high-temperature ignition events, supporting the identification of a phenomenon coined “cool-flame wave propagation” during the transient ignition process. Subsequent high-temperature ignition is found to consume the previously formed HCHO in the jet head, while the formation of HCHO persists in the fuel-rich zone near the flame base over the entire combustion period.  相似文献

We report on spatially and temporally resolved optical diagnostic measurements of propagation and combustion of diesel sprays introduced through a single-hole fuel injector into a constant volume, high-temperature, high-pressure cell. From shadowgraphy images in non-reacting environments of pure nitrogen, penetration lengths and dispersion angles were determined for non-vaporizing and vaporizing conditions, and found to be in reasonable agreement with standard models for liquid jet propagation and break-up.Quasi-simultaneous two-dimensional images were obtained of laser elastic light scattering, shadowgraphs and spectrally integrated flame emission in a reacting environment (cell temperature 850 K). In addition laser-induced incandescence was employed for the identification of soot-loaded regions. The simultaneously recorded spray images exhibit remarkable structural similarity and provide complementary information about the spray propagation and combustion process. The measurements also reveal the fuel vapor cloud extending well beyond the liquid core and close to the nozzle tip. Ignition takes place close to the tip of the spray within the mixing layer of fuel vapor and surrounding air. Soot is formed in the vapor core region at the tip of the liquid fuel jet. Our results support recently developed phenomenological model on diesel spray combustion.  相似文献

Experiments on the combustion of large n-heptane droplets, performed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in the International Space Station, revealed a second stage of continued quasi-steady burning, supported by low-temperature chemistry, that follows radiative extinction of the first stage of burning, which is supported by normal hot-flame chemistry. The second stage of combustion experienced diffusive extinction, after which a large vapour cloud was observed to form around the droplet. In the present work, a 770-step reduced chemical-kinetic mechanism and a new 62-step skeletal chemical-kinetic mechanism, developed as an extension of an earlier 56-step mechanism, are employed to calculate the droplet burning rates, flame structures, and extinction diameters for this cool-flame regime. The calculations are performed for quasi-steady burning with the mixture fraction as the independent variable, which is then related to the physical variables of droplet combustion. The predictions with the new mechanism, which agree well with measured autoignition times, reveal that, in decreasing order of abundance, H2O, CO, H2O2, CH2O, and C2H4 are the principal reaction products during the low-temperature stage and that, during this stage, there is substantial leakage of n-heptane and O2 through the flame, and very little production of CO2 with no soot in the mechanism. The fuel leakage has been suggested to be the source of the observed vapour cloud that forms after flame extinction. While the new skeletal chemical-kinetic mechanism facilitates understanding of the chemical kinetics and predicts ignition times well, its predicted droplet diameters at extinction are appreciably larger than observed experimentally, but predictions with the 770-step reduced chemical-kinetic mechanism are in reasonably good agreement with experiment. The computations show how the key ketohydroperoxide compounds control the diffusion-flame structure and its extinction.  相似文献

OH number densities and rotational temperatures up to 9 bar have been measured using double-phase-conjugate four-wave mixing (DPCFWM) in flat laminar premixed methane/air flames. By phase conjugating the backward pump to the forward pump with a phase-conjugate mirror conventional degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) becomes DPCFWM and quantitative measurements of OH radicals and OH rotational temperatures in flames at high pressure are possible. Our results show that conventional DFWM with a standard mirror is a low-biased measurement at high pressure primarly due to a fluctuating interaction volume which results from large fluctuating density gradients at the edge of the flame and from flame movement. A comparison is made between a laser-saturated fluorescence technique, conventional DFWM, and DPCFWM at 1, 5 and 9 bar.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical investigations of single droplet burning modes in a lean, partially prevaporized swirl-stabilized spray flame are reported. In the experiment single droplet flames have been visualized by CH-PLIF and simultaneous recording of the Mie signal. Two single droplet burning modes were identified: the envelope flame is a spherical diffusion flame burning at near-stoichiometric conditions. The wake flame is a potentially lean, partially premixed flame located downstream of the droplet. The droplet burning mode is of practical relevance, since it has significant impact on NO formation due to incomplete prevaporization. The droplet burning mode is determined by the ratio of chemical and convective time scales. The convective time scale is related to the droplet slip velocity. The impact of turbulent gas phase velocity fluctuations on droplet mechanics and droplet burning is discussed, based on a previous numerical investigation. In the present study the droplet slip velocity was measured with the 3D Phase Doppler (3D-PD) technique. For the measured slip velocities and ambient conditions in the hot gas region of the spray flame, simulations of single droplet burning were performed utilizing detailed models for chemical reaction, diffusive transport and vaporization. An agreement between the droplet burning modes predicted by the simulation and the droplet burning modes observed in the experiments was found.  相似文献

We have developed a general theory of non-adiabatic premixed flames that is valid for flames of arbitrary shape that fully accounts for the hydrodynamic and diffusive-thermal processes, and incorporates the effects of volumetric heat losses. The model is used to describe aspects of experimentally observed phenomena of self-extinguishing (SEFs) and self-wrinkling flames (SWFs), in which radiative heat losses play an important role. SEFs are spherical flames that propagate considerable distances in sub-limit conditions before suddenly extinguishing. Our results capture many aspects of this phenomenon including an explicit determination of flame size and propagation speed at quenching. SWFs are hydrodynamically unstable flames in which cells spontaneously appear on the flame surface once the flame reaches a critical size. Our results yield expressions of the critical flame size at the onset of wrinkling and expected cell size beyond the stability threshold. The various possible burning regimes are mapped out in parameter space.  相似文献

The particle formation in spray flame synthesis (SFS) is a fast and complex process involving many sub-steps that may happen simultaneously. To investigate the mechanisms that typically lead to small aggregated primary particles, a sophisticated technique for in situ measurements in the flame is necessary to provide information about primary particles and the aggregates as well. This work describes the development of an in situ measurement setup using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to investigate the entire particle formation mechanism of zirconia nanoparticles in and above a turbulent spray flame. In preparation for the in situ measurements, a beamline for single crystal diffractometry at Karlsruhe Research Accelerator (KARA) was adapted for low scattering SAXS experiments including optimizations of the optics and measurement protocol. As a result, a significant dependence of scattering intensity was detected as a function of the height above the burner. A detailed analysis of the SAXS data and comparison with TEM images allow insights into the primary particle growth, the development of fractal properties and the aggregation process.  相似文献

Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments and a magnetization study have been performed on Ni84.8P15.2 and Ni82.5P17.5 alloys. It is shown that these alloys exhibit an inhomogeneous two-phase structure with regions having phosphorus contents below the average concentration. The amplitude of the concentration fluctuations determined by SAXS agrees with that derived from a magnetic analysis.  相似文献

This study was designed to compare the properties of myofibrillar protein (MP) stabilized soybean oil-in-water emulsions fabricated by ultrasound-assisted emulsification (UAE), high-pressure homogenization (HPH) and high-speed homogenization (HSH). The emulsion properties, droplet characteristics, interfacial proteins, protein exposure extent, microrheological properties, multiple light scattering results, and 7 d storage stabilities of the three emulsions were specifically investigated. Our results indicate that UAE and HPH were better emulsification methods than HSH to obtain high-quality emulsions with higher emulsifying activity index (UAE 20.73 m2·g−1, HPH 11.76 m2·g−1 and HSH 6.80 m2·g−1), whiteness (UAE 81.05, HPH 80.67 and HSH 74.09), viscosity coefficient (UAE 0.44 Pa·sn, HPH 0.49 Pa·sn and HSH 0.22 Pa·sn), macroscopic viscosity index (UAE 2.31 nm−2·s, HPH 0.38 nm−2·s and HSH 0.34 nm−2·s), and storage stability, especially for the UAE. Furthermore, UAE was a more efficient emulsification method than HPH to prepare the fine MP-soybean oil emulsion. The protein-coated oil droplets were observed in the three emulsions. The emulsion droplet size of the UAE-fabricated emulsion was the lowest (0.15 μm) while the interfacial protein concentration (93.37%) and the protein exposure extent were the highest among the three emulsions. During the 7 d storage, no separation was observed for the UAE-fabricated emulsion, while the emulsions fabricated by HPH and HSH were separated after storage for 5 d and 2 h. Therefore, this work suggests that UAE could be a better method than HPH and HSH to fabricate MP-soybean oil emulsion.  相似文献

2 ∑–X2Π(0,0) band of OH has been studied in premixed methane/air flames using a cw Ar+ laser probe. Measurements of flame temperature and pressure were derived from fits of theoretical simulations to the observed time variation of signals over a pressure range of 10 to 40 bar and for different stoichiometry that were in agreement with independent measurements using N2 CARS and predictions of a one-dimensional flame calculation. Broadband DFWM spectra in the same band of OH were observed up to a pressure of 9 bar, above which signals were obtained only from scattering from thermal gratings. Previous renormalization group results for a simple spinless mixed valence model yielded large intersite ?-electron correlations if extended coherent hybridization mixed valence states are assumed. We simulate these correlations by an ?-level energy distribution and analyze its consequences. It is seen that a relatively small distribution width already smears the coherent hybridization gap leading to a lattice of essentially independent resonant levels.  相似文献

A new concept of a free space, high-speed (Gbps) optical communication system based on spectral encoding of radiation from a broadband pulsed laser is developed. It is shown that, in combination with the use of partially coherent laser beams and a relatively slow photosensor, scintillations can be suppressed by orders of magnitude for distances of more than 10 km.  相似文献

Effects of doping high pressure methane diffusion flames with benzene, cyclo-hexane and n-hexane were investigated to assess the sooting propensity of three hydrocarbons with six carbons at elevated pressures. Amount of liquid hydrocarbons added to methane constituted 7.5% of the total carbon content of the fuel stream. The pressure range investigated extended up to 10 bar and the experiments were carried out in a high pressure combustion chamber capable of establishing stable laminar diffusion flames with various fuels at elevated pressures and was used in similar experiments previously. Temperatures and soot volume fractions were measured using the spectral soot emission technique capturing spectrally-resolved line-of-sight intensities which were subsequently inverted using an Abel type algorithm to obtain radial distributions assuming that the flames are axisymmetric. The total mass carbon flow of the fuel stream was kept constant at 0.524 mg/s in neat methane, benzene-doped methane, cyclo-hexane-doped methane, and n-hexane-doped methane flames to have tractable measurements at all pressures. Measured maximum soot volume fractions and evaluated maximum soot yields showed that benzene-doped methane flame had the higher values than cyclo-hexane doped methane flames which in turn had higher values than n-hexane doped methane flames at all pressures. Sooting propensity dependence of the three hydrocarbons on pressure can be ranked as, in descending order, n-hexane, cyclo-hexane, and benzene; however, the difference between pressure dependencies of n-hexane and cyclo-hexane was within the measurement error margins. Ratio of soot yields of benzene to n-hexane doped flames changed from about 2 at 2 bar to 1.2 at 10 bar; the ratio of benzene to cyclo-hexane doped flames showed similar trends.  相似文献

A means of performing simultaneous, high-speed measurements of temperature and OH lifetime-corrected laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) for tracking unsteady flames has been developed and demonstrated. The system uses the frequency-doubled and frequency-tripled output beams of an 80 MHz mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser to achieve ultrashort laser pulses (order 2 ps) for Rayleigh-scattering thermometry at 460 nm and lifetime-corrected OH LIF at 306.5 nm, respectively. Simultaneous, high-speed measurements of temperature and OH number density enable studies of flame chemistry, heat release, and flame extinction in unsteady, strained flames where the local fluorescence-quenching environment is unknown.  相似文献

Two different strategies are compared for linear laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements of nitric oxide concentration ([NO]) in counter-flow diffusion flames at high pressures via the A-X(0,0) system. Excitation of NO via a rovibronic transition at 226.03 nm is found to be slightly better compared to a previously utilized excitation wavelength of 225.58 nm. An indirect approach based on the computed spectral overlap fraction is verified and applied to calibrate [NO] measurements in counter-flow diffusion flames at high pressures. A five-level model for NO molecular dynamics is presented and utilized to investigate the effects of rotational energy transfer (RET) on linear LIF measurements of [NO] at pressures up to 15 atm. The results indicate that rotational relaxation effects are essentially negligible under high-pressure conditions at low laser fluences, and thus they need not be accounted for when measuring [NO] using linear LIF. The calibration technique is validated by direct comparisons to [NO] measurements made at pressures up to 5 atm via another calibration method, based on doping NO in counter-flow premixed flames at the same pressure. Using this calibration technique, LIF measurements of [NO] are obtained in a series of counter-flow diffusion flames at pressures up to 15 atm. These measurements are found to be in excellent agreement with previously reported measurements of [NO] in similar flames. PACS 07.35.+k; 33.20.Sn; 42.62.Fi  相似文献

We report spatially resolved linear laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) measurements of nitric oxide (NO) in a pre-heated, high-pressure (4.27 atm), lean direct-injection (LDI) spray flame. The feasibility of using PLIF in lieu of LIF is assessed with respect to measuring NO concentrations in high-pressure LDI spray flames. NO is excited via the resonant Q2(26.5) transition of the γ(0,0) band while a non-resonant wavelength is employed to subtract background interferences. LIF detection is performed in a 2-nm region centered on the γ(0,1) band. PLIF detection is performed in a 68-nm window that captures fluorescence from several vibrational bands. An in situ NO doping scheme for fluorescence calibration is successfully employed to quantify the LIF signals. However, a similar calibration scheme for the reduction of PLIF images to quantitative field measurements is plagued by the laser-excited background. Excitation scans and calibration comparisons have been performed to assess the background contribution for PLIF detection. Quantitative radial NO profiles measured by LIF are presented and analyzed so as to correct the PLIF measurements to within the accuracy bars of the LIF measurements via a single-point scaling of the PLIF image. Inverse Fourier Transform of optical conductivity is used for studies of quasiparticle relaxation in Heavy Fermions in time domain. We demonstrate the usefulness of the procedure on model spectra and then use it to study quasiparticle relaxation in two Heavy Fermions YbFe4Sb12 and CeRu4Sb12. Optical conductivity in time domain reveals details of quasiparticle relaxation close to the Fermi level, not readily accessible from the spectra in the frequency domain. In particular, we find that the relaxation of heavy quasiparticles does not start instantaneously, but typically after a few hundred femto-seconds.  相似文献
