The thermal conductivity of methane hydrate is an important physical parameter affecting the processes of methane hydrate exploration, mining, gas hydrate storage and transportation as well as other applications.Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and the Green-Kubo method have been employed for systems from fully occupied to vacant occupied sI methane hydrate in order to estimate their thermal conductivity. The estimations were carried out at temperatures from 203.15 to 263.15 K and at pressures from 3 to 100 MPa.Potential models selected for water were TIP4P,TIP4P-Ew,TIP4P/2005,TIP4P-FQ and TIP4P/Ice.The effects of varying the ratio of the host and guest molecules and the external thermobaric conditions on the thermal conductivity of methane hydrate were studied. The results indicated that the thermal conductivity of methane hydrate is essentially determined by the cage framework which constitutes the hydrate lattice and the cage framework has only slightly higher thermal conductivity in the presence of the guest molecules.Inclusion of more guest molecules in the cage improves the thermal conductivity of methane hydrate. It is also revealed that the thermal conductivity of the sI hydrate shows a similar variation with temperature.Pressure also has an effect on the thermal conductivity, particularly at higher pressures. As the pressure increases, slightly higher thermal conductivities result.Changes in density have little impact on the thermal conductivity of methane hydrate.

A single-sided transient plane source technique has been used to determine the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of a compacted methane hydrate sample over the temperature range of 261.5-277.4 K and at gas-phase pressures ranging from 3.8 to 14.2 MPa. The average thermal conductivity, 0.68 +/- 0.01 W/(m K), and thermal diffusivity, 2.04 x 10(-7) +/- 0.04 x 10(-7) m2/s, values are, respectively, higher and lower than previously reported values. Equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of methane hydrate have also been performed in the NPT ensemble to estimate the thermal conductivity for methane compositions ranging from 80 to 100% of the maximum theoretical occupation, at 276 K and at pressures ranging from 0.1 to 100 MPa. Calculations were performed with three rigid potential models for water, namely, SPC/E, TIP4P-Ew, and TIP4P-FQ, the last of which includes the effects of polarizability. The thermal conductivities predicted from MD simulations were in reasonable agreement with experimental results, ranging from about 0.52 to 0.77 W/(m K) for the different potential models with the polarizable water model giving the best agreement with experiments. The MD simulation method was validated by comparing calculated and experimental thermal conductivity values for ice and liquid water. The simulations were in reasonable agreement with experimental data. The simulations predict a slight increase in the thermal conductivity with decreasing methane occupation of the hydrate cages. The thermal conductivity was found to be essentially independent of pressure in both simulations and experiments. Our experimental and simulation thermal conductivity results provide data to help predict gas hydrate stability in sediments for the purposes of production or estimating methane release into the environment due to gradual warming.

By employing inverse modeling to analyze the laboratory data, we determined the composite thermal conductivity (k(theta), W/m/K) of a porous methane hydrate sample ranged between 0.25 and 0.58 W/m/K as a function of density. The calculated composite thermal diffusivities of porous hydrate sample ranged between 2.59 x 10(-7) m(2)/s and 3.71 x 10(-7) m(2)/s. The laboratory study involved a large heterogeneous sample (composed of hydrate, water, and methane gas). The measurements were conducted isobarically at 4.98 MPa over a temperature range of 277.3-279.1 K. Pressure and temperature were monitored at multiple locations in the sample. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to visualize and quantify the density changes that occurred during hydrate formation from granular ice. CT images showed that methane hydrate formed from granular ice was heterogeneous and provided an estimate of the sample density variation in the radial direction. This facilitated quantifying the density effect on composite thermal conductivity. This study showed that the sample heterogeneity should be considered in thermal conductivity measurements of hydrate systems. Mixing models (i.e., arithmetic, harmonic, geometric mean, and square root models) were compared to the estimated composite thermal conductivity determined by inverse modeling. The results of the arithmetic mean model showed the best agreement with the estimated composite thermal conductivity.

The decomposition process of methane hydrate in pure water and methanol aqueous solution was studied by molecular dynamics simulation. The effects of temperature and pressure on hydrate structure and decomposition rate are discussed. The results show that decreasing pressure and increasing temperature can significantly enhance the decomposition rate of hydrate. After adding a small amount of methanol molecules, bubbles with a diameter of about 2 nm are formed, and the methanol molecules are mainly distributed at the gas-liquid interface, which greatly accelerates the decomposition rate and gas-liquid separation efficiency. The radial distribution function and sequence parameter analysis show that the water molecules of the undecomposed hydrate with ordered ice-like configuration at a temperature of 275 K evolve gradually into a long-range disordered liquid structure in the dynamic relaxation process. It was found that at temperatures above 280 K and pressures between 10 atm and 100 atm, the pressure has no significant effect on hydrate decomposition rate, but when the pressure is reduced to 1 atm, the decomposition rate increases sharply. These findings provided a theoretical insight for the industrial exploitation of hydrates.

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations with the nonpolarizable SPC/E (Berendsen et al., J. Phys. Chem. 1987, 91, 6269) and the polarizable COS/G2 (Yu and van Gunsteren, J. Chem. Phys. 2004, 121, 9549) force fields have been employed to calculate the thermal conductivity and other associated properties of methane hydrate over a temperature range from 30 to 260 K. The calculated results are compared to experimental data over this same range. The values of the thermal conductivity calculated with the COS/G2 model are closer to the experimental values than are those calculated with the nonpolarizable SPC/E model. The calculations match the temperature trend in the experimental data at temperatures below 50 K; however, they exhibit a slight decrease in thermal conductivity at higher temperatures in comparison to an opposite trend in the experimental data. The calculated thermal conductivity values are found to be relatively insensitive to the occupancy of the cages except at low (T相似文献

The first results of studying the possibility of self-preservation of methane hydrates produced in a “dry-water” dispersion were presented. It was shown for the first time that the anomalously low rates of dissociation of gas hydrates at a temperature below 273 K and a pressure of 0.1 MPa, which were previously known for methane hydrates, are also characteristic of methane hydrates forming in dry water. Methane hydrates obtained in dry water containing no more than 5 wt % stabilizer (hydrophobized silica nanoparticles) are primarily solids at a pressure of 0.1 MPa and a temperature below 273 K. At a stabilizer content of dry water of 10 or 15 wt %, a significant part of the hydrate sample looks like a free-flowing powder. The powder fraction increases with increasing stabilizer content, which reduces the efficiency of self-preservation of methane hydrates.

The effective thermal conductivities of gas-saturated porous methane hydrates were measured by a single-sided transient plane source (TPS) technique and simulated by a generalized fractal model of porous media that based on self-similarity.The density of porous hydrate, measured by the volume of the sample in the experimental system, was used to evaluate the porosity of methane hydrate samples. The fractal model was based on Sierpinski carpet,a thermal-electrical analogy technique and one-dimensional heat flow assumption. Both the experimental and computational results show the effective thermal conductivity of methane hydrate decreases with the porosity increase. The porosity of 0.3 can reduce the thermal conductivity of the methane hydrate by 25%.By analysis of the experimental data and the simulative result, the optimized thermal conductivity of the zero-porosity methane hydrate is about 0.7 W m-1K-1.

Contrary to the thermodynamic inhibiting effect of methanol on methane hydrate formation from aqueous phases, hydrate forms quickly at high yield by exposing frozen water–methanol mixtures with methanol concentrations ranging from 0.6–10 wt % to methane gas at pressures from 125 bars at 253 K. Formation rates are some two orders of magnitude greater than those obtained for samples without methanol and conversion of ice is essentially complete. Ammonia has a similar catalytic effect when used in concentrations of 0.3–2.7 wt %. The structure I methane hydrate formed in this manner was characterized by powder X‐ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Steps in the possible mechanism of action of methanol were studied with molecular dynamics simulations of the Ih (0001) basal plane exposed to methanol and methane gas. Simulations show that methanol from a surface aqueous layer slowly migrates into the ice lattice. Methane gas is preferentially adsorbed into the aqueous methanol surface layer. Possible consequences of the catalytic methane hydrate formation on hydrate plug formation in gas pipelines, on large scale energy‐efficient gas hydrate formation, and in planetary science are discussed.

A new experimental technique has been developed to measure the mole fraction of the gas hydrate former in the bulk liquid phase, at the onset of hydrate growth and thereafter, in a semi-batch stirred tank reactor. The mole fraction of carbon dioxide and methane in the bulk liquid phase was obtained for the first 11 and 13 min of the growth stage, for the carbon dioxide–water and methane–water systems respectively. Experiments were conducted at temperatures ranging from 275.3 K to 281.4 K and at pressures ranging from 2017 kPa to 4000 kPa for the carbon dioxide–water system, while temperatures ranging from 275.1 K to 279.1 K and pressures ranging from 3858 kPa to 6992 kPa were investigated for the methane–water system. The mole fraction of carbon dioxide in the bulk liquid phase was found to be constant during the growth period, varying on average by 0.6% and 0.3% at 275.4 K and 279.5 K. Similarly, the mole fraction of methane in the bulk liquid phase was found to remain constant during the growth stage, varying on average by 2.0%, 0.8% and 0.2% at 275.1 K, 277.1 K and 279.1 K respectively. The mole fraction of the gas hydrate former in the bulk liquid phase was also found to increase with pressure and decrease with temperature, while remaining greater than its hydrate-liquid water equilibrium value. As a result, an alternate formulation of a hydrate growth model is proposed.

Extensive equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate thermal conduction mechanisms via the Green-Kubo approach for (type II) hydrogen hydrate, at 0.05 kbar and between 30 and 250 K, for both lightly filled H(2) hydrates (1s4l) and for more densely filled H(2) systems (2s4l), in which four H(2) molecules are present in the large cavities, with respective single- and double-occupation of the small cages. The TIP4P water model was used in conjunction with a fully atomistic hydrogen potential along with long-range Ewald electrostatics. It was found that substantially less damping in guest-host energy transfer is present in hydrogen hydrate as is observed in common type I clathrates (e.g., methane hydrate), but more akin in to previous results for type II and H methane hydrate polymorphs. This gives rise to larger thermal conductivities relative to common type I hydrates, and also larger than type II and H methane hydrate polymorphs, and a more crystal-like temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity.

The behavior of methane hydrate was investigated after it was pressurized with helium or nitrogen gas in a test system by monitoring the gas compositions. The results obtained indicate that even when the partial pressure of methane gas in such a system is lower than the equilibrium pressure at a certain temperature, the dissociation rate of methane hydrate is greatly depressed by pressurization with helium or nitrogen gas. This phenomenon is only observed when the total pressure of methane and helium (or nitrogen) gas in the system is greater than the equilibrium pressure required to stabilize methane hydrate with just methane gas. The following model has been proposed to explain the observed phenomenon: (1) Gas bubbles develop at the hydrate surface during hydrate dissociation, and there is a pressure balance between the methane gas inside the gas bubbles and the external pressurizing gas (methane and helium or nitrogen), as transmitted through the water film; as a result the methane gas in the gas bubbles stabilizes the hydrate surface covered with bubbles when the total gas pressure is greater than the equilibrium pressure of the methane hydrate at that temperature; this situation persists until the gas in the bubbles becomes sufficiently dilute in methane or until the surface becomes bubble-free. (2) In case of direct contact of methane hydrate with water, the water surrounding the hydrate is supersaturated with methane released upon hydrate dissociation; consequently, methane hydrate is stabilized when the hydrostatic pressure is above the equilibrium pressure of methane hydrate at a certain temperature, again until the dissolved gas at the surface becomes sufficiently dilute in methane. In essence, the phenomenon is due to the presence of a nonequilibrium state where there is a chemical potential gradient from the solid hydrate particles to the bulk solution that exists as long as solid hydrate remains.

This study presents the influences of additional guest molecules such as C2H6, C3H8, and CO2 on methane hydrates regarding their thermal behavior. For this purpose, the onset temperatures of decomposition as well as the enthalpies of dissociation were determined for synthesized multicomponent gas hydrates in the range of 173-290 K at atmospheric pressure using a Calvet heat-flow calorimeter. Furthermore, the structures and the compositions of the hydrates were obtained using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy as well as hydrate prediction program calculations. It is shown that the onset temperature of decomposition of both sI and sII hydrates tends to increase with an increasing number of larger guest molecules than methane occupying the large cavities. The results of the calorimetric measurements also indicate that the molar dissociation enthalpy depends on the guest-to-cavity size ratio and the actual concentration of the guest occupying the large cavities of the hydrate. To our knowledge, this is the first study that observes this behavior using calorimetrical measurements on mixed gas hydrates at these temperature and pressure conditions.

The solubility of carbon dioxide in pure water in the presence of CO2 gas hydrate has been measured at temperatures between 273 and 284 K and pressures ranging from 20 to 60 bar. It was found that the solubility decreases with decreasing temperature in the hydrate formation region. In the absence of gas hydrate, the gas solubility increases with decreasing temperature, but the hydrate formation process changes this trend. This confirms theoretical calculations as well as removes previously reported ambiguities. It was also observed that pressure was not a strong factor on the solubility.

For the first time, the compositions of argon and methane high-pressure gas hydrates have been directly determined. The studied samples of the gas hydrates were prepared under high-pressure conditions and quenched at 77 K. The composition of the argon hydrate (structure H, stable at 460-770 MPa) was found to be Ar.(3.27 +/- 0.17)H(2)O. This result shows a good agreement with the refinement of the argon hydrate structure using neutron powder diffraction data and helps to rationalize the evolution of hydrate structures in the Ar-H(2)O system at high pressures. The quenched argon hydrate was found to dissociate in two steps. The first step (170-190 K) corresponds to a partial dissociation of the hydrate and the self-preservation of a residual part of the hydrate with an ice cover. Presumably, significant amounts of ice Ic form at this stage. The second step (210-230 K) corresponds to the dissociation of the residual part of the hydrate. The composition of the methane hydrate (cubic structure I, stable up to 620 MPa) was found to be CH(4).5.76H(2)O. Temperature dependence of the unit cell parameters for both hydrates has been also studied. Calculated from these results, the thermal expansivities for the structure H argon hydrate are alpha(a) = 76.6 K(-1) and alpha(c) = 77.4 K(-1) (in the 100-250 K temperature range) and for the cubic structure I methane hydrate are alpha(a) = 32.2 K(-1), alpha(a) = 53.0 K(-1), and alpha(a) = 73.5 K(-1) at 100, 150, and 200 K, respectively.

The composition of methane hydrate, namely n(w) for CH4.n(w)H2O, was directly measured along the hydrate equilibrium boundary under conditions of excess methane gas. Pressure and temperature conditions ranged from 1.9 to 9.7 MPa and 263 to 285 K. Within experimental error, there is no change in hydrate composition with increasing pressure along the equilibrium boundary, but n(w) may show a slight systematic decrease away from this boundary. A hydrate stoichiometry of n(w) = 5.81-6.10 H2O describes the entire range of measured values, with an average composition of CH4.5.99(+/-0.07)H2O along the equilibrium boundary. These results, consistent with previously measured values, are discussed with respect to the widely ranging values obtained by thermodynamic analysis. The relatively constant composition of methane hydrate over the geologically relevant pressure and temperature range investigated suggests that in situ methane hydrate compositions may be estimated with some confidence.

Storage and transportation of natural gas as gas hydrate (“gas-to-solids technology”) is a promising alternative to the established liquefied natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) technologies. Gas hydrates offer a relatively high gas storage capacity and mild temperature and pressure conditions for formation. Simulations based on the van der Waals–Platteeuw model and molecular dynamics (MD) are employed in this study to relate the methane gas content/occupancy in different hydrate systems with the hydrate stability conditions including temperature, pressure, and secondary clathrate stabilizing guests. Methane is chosen as a model system for natural gas. It was found that the addition of about 1% propane suffices to increase the structure II (sII) methane hydrate stability without excessively compromising methane storage capacity in hydrate. When tetrahydrofuran (THF) is used as the stabilizing agent in sII hydrate at concentration between 1% and 3%, a reasonably high methane content in hydrate can be maintained (∼85–100, v/v) without dealing with pressures more than 5 MPa and close to room temperature.

The thermal stability of gamma-ray-induced methyl radicals in methane hydrate was studied using the ESR method at atmospheric pressure and 210-260 K. The methyl radical decay proceeded with the second-order reaction, and ethane molecules were generated from the dimerization process. The methyl radical decay proceeds by two different temperature-dependent processes, that is, the respective activation energies of these processes are 20.0 +/- 1.6 kJ/mol for the lower temperature region of 210-230 K and 54.8 +/- 5.7 kJ/mol for the higher temperature region of 235-260 K. The former agrees well with the enthalpy change of methane hydrate dissociation into ice and gaseous methane, while the latter agrees well with the enthalpy change into liquid water and gaseous methane. The present findings reveal that methane hydrates dissociate into liquid (supercooled) water and gaseous methane in the temperature range of 235-260 K.

Kinetics of hydrate formation for propane and its mixture with 73% methane have been studied experimentally and theoretically at pressure up to 2 MPa and temperature up to 277.65 K in a 10 m circulating flow reactor. A mathematical model has been developed for the process of hydrate formation based on crystallization, mass transfer and thermodynamics concepts. The amounts of gas consumptions due to hydrate formation are measured experimentally and predicted by the model. The agreement between the experimental measured gas consumptions and predicted values by the mathematical model are very good and the average deviation errors in the prediction of gas consumption are less than 10%.
