We employ the Q-representation to study the non-classical correlations that are present from below to above-threshold in the degenerate optical parametric oscillator. Our study shows that such correlations are present just above threshold, in the regime in which stripe patterns are formed, but that they also persist further above threshold in the presence of spatially disordered structures. Quantum fluctuations of the signal field are shown to induce packed arrays of cavity solitons in a degenerate optical parametric oscillator above threshold in the limit of large pump finesse relative to the signal finesse. The cavity solitons in the array are formed by locked domain walls, and lead to a highly correlated quantum structure. The effect of the quantum fluctuations is non-trivial since the arrays of cavity solitons have a far less stable than other stable solutions and disappear with decreasing pump finesse. The transition from disorder to order due to quantum noise is also discussed. Received 20 September 2002 / Received in final form 28 November 2002 Published online 11 February 2003  相似文献

Quantum images, that is inhomogeneous field distributions purely generated by quantum fluctuations, persist when passing from the degenerate to the non-degenerate case of optical parametric oscillators (OPO). Below the threshold for parametric oscillation where the near-field distributions are homogeneous both in intensity and phase, appropriate spatial correlation functions anticipate the transverse spatial pattern that appears above threshold. In particular, the angular dependence of the far field spatial correlation function is able to reveal the travelling-wave nature of the phase pattern above threshold typical of nondegenerate OPOs. Cross-correlation functions between signal and idler intensities show clear evidence of the non-classical nature of the output light. Received 8 October 1999  相似文献

We investigate a collective excitation (Leggett's mode) corresponding to small fluctuations of the relative phase of two condensates in two-band superconductor using the effective “phase only” action. We consider the possibility of observing Leggett's mode in MgB2 superconductor and conclude that for the known at present values of the two-band model parameters for MgB2 Leggett's mode arises above the two-particle threshold. We give a detailed picture of the mesoscopic conductance fluctuations in the deep insulating regime (DIR) within the Nguyen, Spivak and Shklovskii model in the unitary and symplectic ensembles. Slutski's theorem is invoked to rigorously state the ergodic problem for conductance fluctuations in the DIR, in contrast with previous studies. A weakly decaying behavior of the log-conductance correlation function, even weaker when spin-orbit scatterers are included, is established on the relevant field scale of the model. Such a slow decay implies that the stochastic process, defined by the fluctuations of the log-conductance, is non-ergodic in the mean square sense in the ensembles with the reported symmetries. The results can be interpreted in terms of the effective number of samples within the available magnetic scale. Using the replica approach, we derive the strong localisation counterparts of the well known 'cooperon' and 'diffuson' which permit analyzing quantitatively the decaying behavior of the correlation function and reveal its symmetry related properties in agreement with the numerical results. The spontaneous emission of an excited atom is analyzed by quantum stochastic trajectory approach without both rotating-wave approximation and Markovian approximation. The atom finite size effect is also taken into account. We show by an example that the correction due to the counter-rotating wave term is rather small, even for the largest atomic number of real nuclei. By generalizing recently obtained results we calculate the excess noise factor (Petermann factor) for a laser system with non-orthogonal eigenmodes. The quantum consistency of the calculation is shown through the explicit conservation of input-output commutation rules. As a result of the calculation, the excess noise in the lasing mode is shown to depend on the laser gain below threshold, and on the noise analysis frequency below and above threshold. We study the low-velocity (0.1-100 μm s-1) frictional properties of interfaces between a rough glassy polymer and smooth silanized glass, a configuration which gives direct access to the rheology of the adhesive joints in which shear localizes. We show that these joints exhibit the full phenomenology expected for confined quasi-2D soft glasses: they strengthen logarithmically when aging at rest, and weaken (rejuvenate) when sliding. Rejuvenation is found to saturate at large velocities. Moreover, aging at rest is shown to be strongly accelerated when waiting under finite stress below the static threshold. We investigate the spatial behaviour of the quantum-noise-reduction spectrum of the vacuum state emitted by a degenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold. In view of possible experimental implementations, we consider a mode-degenerate resonator and two matching lenses and show that, for the realistic case of a finite-width pump, significant level of squeezing can be observed in a very small region of the beam. Several examples of photon entanglement are studied in the Q representation of quantum optics. In particular, the entangled states produced in parametric downconversion are studied in detail, and we determine the conditions for the violation of Bell's inequality. Our approach shows that photon entanglement is related to the existence of correlations between the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field associated to different modes. On the basis of the nondegenerate quantum-beat laser model, we introduce a coherent field which drives the transition between the upper lasing level and an auxiliary level. We demonstrate that such a four-level system can produce squeezed two-mode laser without and with inversion. When the laser is operated well above threshold, the intensity fluctuation in the average mode is reduced below the shot noise with an optimum Mandel parameter Q=- 1/2. At the same time, the noises in the relative amplitude and the relative phase drop to their vaccum noise levels. Furthermore, regardless of inversion, noninversion, and transition between inversion and noninversion, the optimum Mandel Q parameter of Q=- 1/2 is retained when the system operates well above threshold. A simple physical explanation of the squeezing mechanism for two-mode squeezing is given. Received: 22 December 1997 / Revised: 25 March 1998 / Accepted: 9 September 1998  相似文献

The amplitude of standing wave solid state lasers with frequency conversion inside the resonator can become unstable. We investigated the amplitude fluctuations of an end-pumped Nd:YAG-laser at low pump rates (below 160% threshold pump power) and also above. Detecting the individual mode instabilities separately and comparing them with a theoretical laser model, we can trace the origin of the mechanism leading to the observed fluctuations. At certain well defined discrete pump levels above 160% threshold the instabilities disappear. These stable emission states are associated with particular nonconventional mode patterns, some of them exhibiting a helical phase structure. Based on experimental observations and computer simulations of pump induced resonator aberrations we describe a mechanism for the emergence of the peculiar transversal modes and laser fluctuations.  相似文献

The pixel by pixel calibration of a scientific CCD camera allows Poissonian statistics of the spatial fluctuations of an uniform enlightening to be retrieved in the full range of the camera dynamic. The procedure works efficiently for thermal as well as for laser sources, provided that the wavelength and the coherence properties of the source are chosen in order to avoid the formation of equal thickness fringes in the chip (etaloning effect). Calibration allows also the comparison at the shot noise level of images recorded at different places on the chip. We investigate the conditions in which the propagation of an electromagnetic wave is changed from transparency to cutoff in a non-uniform plasma. The allowed frequency range of the driving wave is obtained for the case that the probe frequency is above the plasma frequency. The effect of the power of the driving field on the range is analyzed. Starting from the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entangled state representations of continuous variables we derive a new formulation of complex fractional Fourier transformation (CFFT). We find that two-variable Hermite polynomials are just the eigenmodes of the CFFT. In this way the CFFT is linked to the appropriate operator transformation between two kinds of entangled states in the context of quantum mechanics. In so doing, the CFFT of quantum mechanical wave functions can be derived more directly and concisely. Disordered systems exhibiting exponential localization are mapped to anisotropic spin chains with localization length being related to the anisotropy of the spin model. This relates localization phenomenon in fermions to the rotational symmetry breaking in the critical spin chains. One of the intriguing consequence is that the statement of Onsager universality in spin chains implies universality of the localized fermions where the fluctuations in localized wave functions are universal. We further show that the fluctuations about localized nonrelativistic fermions describe relativistic fermions. This provides a new approach to understand the absence of localization in disordered Dirac fermions. We investigate how disorder affects well known universality of the spin chains by examining the multifractal exponents. Finally, we examine the effects of correlations on the localization characteristics of relativistic fermions. We study the properties of eigenstates of an operating quantum computer which simulates the dynamical evolution in the regime of quantum chaos. Even if the quantum algorithm is polynomial in number of qubits nq, it is shown that the ideal eigenstates become mixed and strongly modified by static imperfections above a certain threshold which drops exponentially with nq. Above this threshold the quantum eigenstate entropy grows linearly with nq but the computation remains reliable during a time scale which is polynomial in the imperfection strength and in nq. Within a strong-coupling perturbative approach, based on a Cumulant Expansion of the extended single-band Hubbard model, we show that the on-shell inverse scattering time deviates from the normal Fermi-liquid behavior near the points of the Fermi surface connected by the characteristic wave-vector of an incommensurate charge density wave. The violation of the Fermi liquid behavior is associated with a square root behavior of the inverse quasiparticle lifetime in proximity of a stripe phase. Some relevant features observed in ARPES experiments on Bi2212 are qualitatively reproduced. Received 28 February 2002 / Received in final form 7 May 2002 Published online 9 July 2002  相似文献

We investigate analytically and numerically the influence of the type of the photorefractive nonlinear response on the periodic states (attractors) which occur during feedback controlled 2W-coupling and correspond to almost 100% diffraction efficiency of the dynamic index grating. In addition to the case of the local response typical, for example, for LiNbO3 crystals we consider the cases of nonlocal (diffusive) response (BaTiO3, SBN) and resonant response (DC-biased BSO, BTO, and BGO crystals). It is shown that the conditions for the transition to the periodic states and their apparent characteristics are strongly different for the two limiting cases above. The spatial confinement of a fluctuation spectrum leads to forces at the confining boundaries. While electromagnetic (EM) fluctuations lead to the well-known dispersion forces, the acoustic analogy has widely been neglected. We show that the strength of the forces resulting from confined acoustic modes may be of the same order of magnitude as van der Waals forces. Additionally, the predicted scaling behavior is identical to the non-retarded case of the EM fluctuations. Our results suggest that dewetting experiments using polymer films are strongly influenced by the acoustic dispersion forces. Received 5 March 2002 and Received in final form 21 May 2002  相似文献
