We characterize the long‐time asymptotic behavior of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on the line with symmetric, nonzero boundary conditions at infinity by using a variant of the recently developed inverse scattering transform (IST) for such problems and by employing the nonlinear steepest‐descent method of Deift and Zhou for oscillatory Riemann‐Hilbert problems. First, we formulate the IST over a single sheet of the complex plane without introducing the uniformization variable that was used by Biondini and Kova?i? in 2014. The solution of the focusing NLS equation with nonzero boundary conditions is thereby associated with a matrix Riemann‐Hilbert problem whose jumps grow exponentially with time for certain portions of the continuous spectrum. This growth is the signature of the well‐known modulational instability within the context of the IST. We then eliminate this growth by performing suitable deformations of the Riemann‐Hilbert problem in the complex spectral plane. The results demonstrate that the solution of the focusing NLS equation with nonzero boundary conditions remains bounded at all times. Moreover, we show that, asymptotically in time, the xt ‐plane decomposes into two types of regions: a left far‐field region and a right far‐field region, where the solution equals the condition at infinity to leading order up to a phase shift, and a central region in which the asymptotic behavior is described by slowly modulated periodic oscillations. Finally, we show how, in the latter region, the modulus of the leading‐order solution, initially obtained as a ratio of Jacobi theta functions, can be reduced to the well‐known elliptic solutions of the focusing NLS equation. These results provide the first characterization of the long‐time behavior of generic perturbations of a constant background in a modulationally unstable medium. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We study spectral surfaces associated with elliptic two-gap solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS), the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV), and the sine-Gordon equation (SG). It is shown that elliptic solutions to the NLS and SG equations, as well as solutions to the KdV equation elliptic with respect tot, can be assigned to any hyperelliptic surface of genus 2 that forms a covering over an elliptic surface.  相似文献

We present an extended F-expansion method for finding periodic wave solutions of nonlinear evolution equations in mathematical physics, which can be thought of as a concentration of extended Jacobi elliptic function expansion method proposed more recently. By using the F-expansion, without calculating Jacobi elliptic functions, we obtain simultaneously many periodic wave solutions expressed by various Jacobi elliptic functions for the new Hamiltonian amplitude equation introduced by Wadati et al. When the modulus m approaches to 1 and 0, then the hyperbolic function solutions (including the solitary wave solutions) and trigonometric function solutions are also given respectively. As the parameter ε goes to zero, the new Hamiltonian amplitude equation becomes the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS), and at least there are 37 kinds of solutions of NLS can be derived from the solutions of the new Hamiltonian amplitude equation.  相似文献

In the present study, we converted the resulting nonlinear equation for the evolution of weakly nonlinear hydrodynamic disturbances on a static cosmological background with self-focusing in a two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. Applying the function transformation method, the NLS equation was transformed to an ordinary differential equation, which depended only on one function ξ and can be solved. The general solution of the latter equation in ζ leads to a general solution of NLS equation. A new set of exact solutions for the two-dimensional NLS equation is obtained.  相似文献

We extend the well-known approach to solution of generalized boundary-value problems for second-order elliptic and parabolic equations and for second-order strongly elliptic systems of variational type to the case of a general normal boundary-value problem for an elliptic equation of order2m. The representation of a distribution from (C (S))’ is established and is usedfor the proof of convergence of an approximate method of solution of a normal elliptic boundary-value problem in unnormed spaces of distributions.  相似文献

The transverse stability of localized stripe patterns for certain singularly perturbed two‐component reaction‐diffusion (RD) systems in the asymptotic limit of a large diffusivity ratio is analyzed. In this semi‐strong interaction regime, the cross‐sectional profile of the stripe is well‐approximated by a homoclinic pulse solution of the corresponding 1‐D problem. The linear instability of such homoclinic stripes to transverse perturbations is well known from numerical simulations to be a key mechanism for the creation of localized spot patterns. However, in general, owing to the difficulty in analyzing the associated nonlocal and nonself‐adjoint spectral problem governing stripe stability for these systems, it has not previously been possible to provide an explicit analytical characterization of these instabilities, including determining the growth rate and the most unstable mode within the band of unstable transverse wave numbers. Our focus is to show that such an explicit characterization of the transverse instability of a homoclinic stripe is possible for a subclass of RD system for which the analysis of the underlying spectral problem reduces to the study of a rather simple algebraic equation in the eigenvalue parameter. Although our simplified theory for stripe stability can be applied to a class of RD system, it is illustrated only for homoclinic stripe and ring solutions for a subclass of the Gierer–Meinhardt model and for a three‐component RD system modeling patterns of criminal activity in urban crime.  相似文献

Applying a higher order spectral method for potential flow we numerically determine the time evolution of non-linear deep water wave packets originating from initial conditions derived from the Peregrine breather solution of the non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLS). The spatio-temporal evolution of the wave packets qualitatively agrees well with what would be expected from lowest order weakly nonlinear estimates (NLS). Some quantitative discrepancies do, however, exist: The maximum wave envelope amplification appears retarded with respect to the NLS predictions. The amplification factor slightly exceeds the factor known from the NLS solution. (© 2015 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We investigate the Cauchy problem for linear elliptic operators with C –coefficients at a regular set Ω ? R 2, which is a classical example of an ill-posed problem. The Cauchy data are given at the manifold Γ ? ?Ω and our goal is to reconstruct the trace of the H 1(Ω) solution of an elliptic equation at ?Ω/Γ. The method proposed here composes the segmenting Mann iteration with a fixed point equation associated with the elliptic Cauchy problem. Our algorithm generalizes the iterative method developed by Maz'ya et al., who proposed a method based on solving successive well-posed mixed boundary value problems. We analyze the regularizing and convergence properties both theoretically and numerically.

In this article, we propose an iterative method based on the equation decomposition technique ( 1 ) for the numerical solution of a singular perturbation problem of fourth‐order elliptic equation. At each step of the given method, we only need to solve a boundary value problem of second‐order elliptic equation and a second‐order singular perturbation problem. We prove that our approximate solution converges to the exact solution when the domain is a disc. Our numerical examples show the efficiency and accuracy of our method. Our iterative method works very well for singular perturbation problems, that is, the case of 0 < ε ? 1, and the convergence rate is very fast. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The defocusing Davey-Stewartson II equation has been shown in numerical experiments to exhibit behavior in the semiclassical limit that qualitatively resembles that of its one-dimensional reduction, the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, namely the generation from smooth initial data of regular rapid oscillations occupying domains of space-time that become well-defined in the limit. As a first step to studying this problem analytically using the inverse scattering transform, we consider the direct spectral transform for the defocusing Davey-Stewartson II equation for smooth initial data in the semiclassical limit. The direct spectral transform involves a singularly perturbed elliptic Dirac system in two dimensions. We introduce a WKB-type method for this problem, proving that it makes sense formally for sufficiently large values of the spectral parameter k by controlling the solution of an associated nonlinear eikonal problem, and we give numerical evidence that the method is accurate for such k in the semiclassical limit. Producing this evidence requires both the numerical solution of the singularly perturbed Dirac system and the numerical solution of the eikonal problem. The former is carried out using a method previously developed by two of the authors, and we give in this paper a new method for the numerical solution of the eikonal problem valid for sufficiently large k. For a particular potential we are able to solve the eikonal problem in closed form for all k, a calculation that yields some insight into the failure of the WKB method for smaller values of k. Informed by numerical calculations of the direct spectral transform, we then begin a study of the singularly perturbed Dirac system for values of k so small that there is no global solution of the eikonal problem. We provide a rigorous semiclassical analysis of the solution for real radial potentials at k=0, which yields an asymptotic formula for the reflection coefficient at k=0 and suggests an annular structure for the solution that may be exploited when k ≠ 0 is small. The numerics also suggest that for some potentials the reflection coefficient converges pointwise as ɛ↓ 0 to a limiting function that is supported in the domain of k-values on which the eikonal problem does not have a global solution. It is expected that singularities of the eikonal function play a role similar to that of turning points in the one-dimensional theory. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A method for the differential stability of solutions to a class of solutions to a class of parametric optimization problem is prposed. Any solution of the parametric optimization problem is given as a fixed point of the metric projection onto the set of admissible coefficients. A new result on the differential stability of the metric projection in Sobolev space H2(Ω)onto a set of admissible parameters is obtained. The stability results with respect to perturbations of observations for the solutions to a coefficient estimation problem for a second-order elliptic equation are derived.  相似文献

nonfocusing instabilities that exist independently of the well-known modulational instability of the focusing NLS equation. The focusing versus defocusing behavior of scalar NLS fields is a well-known model for the corresponding behavior of pulse transmission in optical fibers in the anomalous (focusing) versus normal (defocusing) dispersion regime [19], [20]. For fibers with birefringence (induced by an asymmetry in the cross section), the scalar NLS fields for two orthogonal polarization modes couple nonlinearly [26]. Experiments by Rothenberg [32], [33] have demonstrated a new type of modulational instability in a birefringent normal dispersion fiber, and he proposes this cross-phase coupling instability as a mechanism for the generation of ultrafast, terahertz optical oscillations. In this paper the nonfocusing plane wave instability in an integrable coupled nonlinear Schr?dinger (CNLS) partial differential equation system is contrasted with the focusing instability from two perspectives: traditional linearized stability analysis and integrable methods based on periodic inverse spectral theory. The latter approach is a crucial first step toward a nonlinear , nonlocal understanding of this new optical instability analogous to that developed for the focusing modulational instability of the sine-Gordon equations by Ercolani, Forest, and McLaughlin [13], [14], [15], [17] and the scalar NLS equation by Tracy, Chen, and Lee [36], [37], Forest and Lee [18], and McLaughlin, Li, and Overman [23], [24]. A universal model for the interaction of long nonlinear waves and packets of short waves with long linear carrier waves is given by a system in which an equation of Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) type is coupled to an equation of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. The system has solutions of steady form in which one component is like a solitary-wave solution of the KdV equation and the other component is like a ground-state solution of the NLS equation. We study the stability of solitary-wave solutions to an equation of short and long waves by using variational methods based on the use of energy–momentum functionals and the techniques of convexity type. We use the concentration compactness method to prove the existence of solitary waves. We prove that the stability of solitary waves is determined by the convexity or concavity of a function of the wave speed.  相似文献

Soliton perturbation theory is used to determine the evolution of a solitary wave described by a perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Perturbation terms, which model wide classes of physically relevant perturbations, are considered. An analytical solution is found for the first-order correction of the evolving solitary wave. This solution for the solitary wave tail is in integral form and an explicit expression is found, for large time. Singularity theory, usually used for combustion problems, is applied to the large time expression for the solitary wave tail. Analytical results are obtained, such as the parameter regions in which qualitatively different types of solitary wave tails occur, the location of zeros and the location and amplitude of peaks, in the solitary wave tail. Two examples, the near-continuum limit of a discrete NLS equation and an explicit numerical scheme for the NLS equation, are considered in detail. For the discrete NLS equation it is found that three qualitatively different types of solitary wave tail can occur, while for the explicit finite-difference scheme, only one type of solitary wave tail occurs. An excellent comparison between the perturbation solution and numerical simulations, for the solitary wave tail, is found for both examples.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to introduce a fast and efficient new two-grid method to solve the d-dimensional (d=1,2,3) Poisson elliptic equations. The finite difference equations at all interior grid points form a large sparse linear system, which needs to be solved efficiently. The solution cost of this sparse linear system usually dominates the total cost of solving the discretized partial differential equation. The finite difference equations are based on applying a finite difference scheme of two- and four-orders (compact finite difference method) for discretizing the spatial derivative. The obtained linear systems of Poisson elliptic equations have been solved by a new two-grid (NTG) method and we also note that the NTG method which is used for solving the large sparse linear systems is faster and more effective than that of the standard two-grid method. We utilize the local Fourier analysis to show that the spectral radius of the new two-grid method for 1D and 2D models is less than that of the standard two-grid method. As well as, we expand the corresponding algorithm to the new multi-grid method. The numerical examples show the efficiency of the new algorithms for solving the d-dimensional Poisson equations.  相似文献

The small dispersion limit of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) exhibits a rich structure of sharply separated regions exhibiting disparate rapid oscillations at microscopic scales. The non‐self‐adjoint scattering problem and ill‐posed limiting Whitham equations associated to focusing NLS make rigorous asymptotic results difficult. Previous studies have focused on special classes of analytic initial data for which the limiting elliptic Whitham equations are wellposed. In this paper we consider another exactly solvable family of initial data, the family of square barriers,ψ 0(x) = qχ[?L,L] for real amplitudes q. Using Riemann‐Hilbert techniques, we obtain rigorous pointwise asymptotics for the semiclassical limit of focusing NLS globally in space and up to an O(1) maximal time. In particular, we show that the discontinuities in our initial data regularize by the immediate generation of genus‐one oscillations emitted into the support of the initial data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in which the genus structure of the semiclassical asymptotics for focusing NLS have been calculated for nonanalytic initial data. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation which are decaying perturbations of a quasi-periodic finite-gap background solution. We compute a nonlinear dispersion relation and show that the x/t plane splits into g+1 soliton regions which are interlaced by g + 1 oscillatory regions, where g + 1 is the number of spectral gaps.  相似文献
