We experimentally study the susceptibility to symmetry breaking of a closed turbulent von Kármán swirling flow from Re=150 to Re?10?. We report a divergence of this susceptibility at an intermediate Reynolds number Re=Re(χ)?90,000 which gives experimental evidence that such a highly space and time fluctuating system can undergo a "phase transition." This transition is furthermore associated with a peak in the amplitude of fluctuations of the instantaneous flow symmetry corresponding to intermittencies between spontaneously symmetry breaking metastable states.  相似文献

The effect of a 6.35-mm-diameter cylindrical rod on the transitional flow in a 50.8-mm square channel has been investigated experimentally. A Chromel-Constanian thermocouple with 12,7-fim-diameter leads was used to measure the temperature fluctuations of slightly heated air (5°C) flowing in the channel, over the range of Reynolds number Re = 1,500-3,500. Without the rod, laminar-to-turbulent transition occurred at Re ≈ 2,500-3,500 in the empty square channel The rod destabilized the flow and advanced the onset of fluctuations profoundly. Within the wake of the rod, large fluctuations were detected. Temperature measurements also reviewed the existence of regular vortex shedding at Re = 1,500, and the development of the wake downstream of the rod. This study confirmed the feasibility of using a fine thermocouple for studying obstructed channel flow.  相似文献

The flow structure of strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with Reynolds numbers up to Re(i)=2×10(6) of the inner cylinder is experimentally examined with high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV). The wind Reynolds numbers Re(w) of the turbulent Taylor-vortex flow is found to scale as Re(w)∝Ta(1/2), exactly as predicted by Grossmann and Lohse [Phys. Fluids 23, 045108 (2011).] for the ultimate turbulence regime, in which the boundary layers are turbulent. The dimensionless angular velocity flux has an effective scaling of Nu(ω)∝Ta(0.38), also in correspondence with turbulence in the ultimate regime. The scaling of Nu(ω) is confirmed by local angular velocity flux measurements extracted from high-speed PIV measurements: though the flux shows huge fluctuations, its spatial and temporal average nicely agrees with the result from the global torque measurements.  相似文献

目前,随着相关项目研究的不断推进,如何在高Reynolds数下研究其对气动光学效应的影响成为重要命题.通过设计变Reynolds数气动光学效应实验平台,模拟的单位Reynolds数可以在7.2×106~2.2×108 m-1范围内变化.搭建的基于背景纹影(background oriented schlieren,BOS)的波前测试系统可以达到6 ns的时间分辨率.此系统测量的平凸透镜波前结果表明:实验测量结果与理论计算结果的误差在±4%以内.通过测量9种不同Reynolds数下的超声速气膜瞬态波前数据,分析结果表明:在高Reynolds数条件下,Reynolds数对于超声速气膜气动光学效应的影响比较明显,通过对实验数据进行函数拟合发现OPDrms∝Re0.88,与推导结果OPDrms∝Re0.9十分接近;利用小波分析方法研究了高Reynolds数条件下气动光学效应沿流向的分布特征,发现OPDrms的低频部分(信号的主体)先降低后升高,但是高频部分的震荡幅度先升后降.分析认为OPDrms的低频部分主要受到流场整体结构的影响,而高频部分更多地受到涡的空间分布影响.   相似文献

We report the results of an experimental investigation of the transition to turbulence in a pipe over approximately an order of magnitude range in the Reynolds number Re. A novel scaling law is uncovered using a systematic experimental procedure which permits contact to be made with modern theoretical thinking. The principal result we uncover is a scaling law which indicates that the amplitude of perturbation required to cause transition scales as O(Re-1).  相似文献

We address the experimentally observed non-Gaussian fluctuations for the energy injected into a closed turbulent flow at fixed Reynolds number. We propose that the power fluctuations mirror the internal kinetic energy fluctuations. Using a stochastic cascade model, we construct the excess kinetic energy as the sum over the energy transfers at different levels of the cascade. We find an asymmetric distribution that strongly resembles the experimental data. The asymmetry is an explicit consequence of intermittency and the global measure is dominated by small scale events correlated over the entire system. Our calculation is consistent with the statistical analogy recently made between a confined turbulent flow and a critical system of finite size.  相似文献

We report on observations of a free-Shercliff-layer instability in a Taylor-Couette experiment using a liquid metal over a wide range of Reynolds numbers, Re~10(3)-10(6). The free Shercliff layer is formed by imposing a sufficiently strong axial magnetic field across a pair of differentially rotating axial end cap rings. This layer is destabilized by a hydrodynamic Kelvin-Helmholtz-type instability, characterized by velocity fluctuations in the r-θ plane. The instability appears with an Elsasser number above unity, and saturates with an azimuthal mode number m which increases with the Elsasser number. Measurements of the structure agree well with 2D global linear mode analyses and 3D global nonlinear simulations. These observations have implications for a range of rotating MHD systems in which similar shear layers may be produced.  相似文献

本文采用多弛豫时间格子玻尔兹曼方法(multi relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method—MRT LBM)对二维顶盖驱动半圆腔内流动进行了数值模拟,得到了雷诺数为500~50000范围内半圆腔内流场分布情况。在二维顶盖驱动半圆腔流场中,随雷诺数的增大,流场内旋涡的数目逐渐增加,且流动依次呈现出稳定流、周期流、混沌流等状态。本文计算结果表明,MRT-LBM模型可显著提高计算的稳定性,适用于大范围的雷诺数流动情况。  相似文献

We perform numerical experiments of a dipole crashing into a wall, a generic event in two-dimensional incompressible flows with solid boundaries. The Reynolds number (Re) is varied from 985 to 7880, and no-slip boundary conditions are approximated by Navier boundary conditions with a slip length proportional to Re(-1). Energy dissipation is shown to first set up within a vorticity sheet of thickness proportional to Re(-1) in the neighborhood of the wall, and to continue as this sheet rolls up into a spiral and detaches from the wall. The energy dissipation rate integrated over these regions appears to converge towards Re-independent values, indicating the existence of energy dissipating structures that persist in the vanishing viscosity limit.  相似文献

Velocity fluctuations in a fluidized suspension of particles are investigated using two new ultrasonic correlation spectroscopies: diffusing acoustic wave spectroscopy and dynamic sound scattering. These techniques probe both the local strain rate and rms velocity of the particles, providing important information about the spatial extent of velocity correlations. Our results demonstrate the power of these techniques to probe particle dynamics of fluidized suspensions, and suggest that the velocity correlations are essentially independent of Reynolds numbers for Re(p)<1.  相似文献

Local, time-dependent measurements of mixture fraction of the reacting mixture were obtained in a swirl-stabilised natural gas-fuelled, nominally non-premixed burner using the intensity of chemiluminescence from OH and CH radicals. The measurements quantified the mean, rms of fluctuations and probability density functions of local mixture fraction at the stabilisation region of the flame. In addition, the probability of flame presence and the degree of lean or rich versus stoichiometric reaction is reported. The burner was operated for three air flow Reynolds numbers (Re=18970, 29100 and 57600), at an overall equivalence ratio of 0.32, without and with imposed oscillations to the air flow of the burner at the resonance frequency of 350 Hz. Results show that combustion occurred in a partially premixed mode for all flow conditions, although fuel and air were injected separately in the reaction zone. The mean local mixture fraction was nearly stoichiometric at the base of the flame without imposed air oscillations, but with large fluctuations leading to around 80% of lean or rich reaction. The degree of non-stoichiometric reaction increased with axial distance from the burner exit and Reynolds number and lean reaction dominated. Imposed air oscillations led to lifted flames and increased the degree of non-stoichiometric reaction for Re=18970 and 29100, whereas the flame remained attached onto the injector for Re=57600 and little modification of the mixture fraction was observed.  相似文献

Analytical solutions are presented using method of separation of variables for the time periodic electroosmotic flow (EOF) of linear viscoelastic fluids in semicircular microchannel. The linear viscoelastic fluids used here are described by the general Maxwell model. The solution involves analytically solving the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann (P -B) equation, together with the Cauchy momentum equation and the general Maxwell constitutive equation. By numerical computations, the influences of electric oscillating Reynolds number Re and Deborah number De on velocity amplitude are presented. For small Re, results show that the larger velocity amplitude is confined to the region near the charged wall when De is small. With the increase of the Deborah number De, the velocity far away the charged wall becomes larger for large Deborah number De. However, for larger Re, the oscillating characteristic of the velocity amplitude occurs and becomes significant with the increase of De, especially for larger Deborah number.  相似文献

We have reported the results of experiments on determining the drag coefficient and the thrust coefficient of a two-bladed wind-powered engine based on the Magnus effect with rotating rough cylinders in the range of air flow velocity of 4–10 m/s (Re = 26800–90000) for a constant rotation number of a cylindrical blade about its own axis. The results show that an increase in the Reynolds number reduces the drag coefficient and the thrust coefficient. The extent of the influence of the relative roughness on the aerodynamic characteristics of the two-bladed wind-powered engine has been experimentally established.  相似文献

We study the stability of cylindrical Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of combined axial and azimuthal magnetic fields, and show that adding an azimuthal field profoundly alters the previous results for purely axial fields. For small magnetic Prandtl numbers Pm, the critical Reynolds number Re(c) for the onset of the magnetorotational instability becomes independent of Pm, whereas for purely axial fields it scales as Pm-1. For typical liquid metals, Re(c) is then reduced by several orders of magnitude, enough that this new design should succeed in realizing this instability in the laboratory.  相似文献

We measure, using a lattice gas algorithm, the time development of a wake behind a cylinder at Reynolds numbers equal to 30 and 60. We measure also drag at these values and determine Re90 to be the Reynolds number where vortex shedding starts. Agreement with experimental results is good. We also measure vortex shedding frequency at Re = 108 from transverse velocity and at Re = 180 from lift on the cylinder. The corresponding Strouhal numbers are obtained and discussed.  相似文献

Measurements of the axial streaming velocity are performed by means of laser doppler velocimetry in an experimental apparatus consisting of a waveguide having loudspeakers at each end for high intensity sound levels. Streaming is characterized by an appropriate Reynolds number Re(NL), the case Re(NL)<1 corresponding to the so-called slow streaming and the case Re(NL)>/=1 being referred to as fast streaming. The variation of axial streaming velocity with respect to the transverse coordinate is compared to the available slow streaming theory. Streaming fluid flow is measured both in the core region and in the near wall region. Streaming velocity in the center of the guide agrees reasonably well with the slow streaming theory for small Re(NL) but deviates significantly from such predictions for Re(NL)>20 and its evolution for further increasing Re(NL) is discussed. Then streaming behavior in the near wall region is particularly studied. For Re(NL)<70, two vortices are present across the guide section as predicted by slow streaming theory. Then it appears that, when the Reynolds number is increased, two other vortices become visible in the near wall region. Different stages for the generation and evolution of these inner streaming vortices are presented.  相似文献

LDA and PIV techniques were used to study the decay of an axisymmetrical turbulent wake originated downstream an immobile disk in a water flume for Reynolds numbers Re = 1.5?2.4?105. Data were compared with experiments performed with a set of thermo-anemometers behind a disk in a wind tunnel at lower Reynolds numbers (Re = 1.3?2.6?104). Observations for a new range of Reynolds number confirmed that the velocity distribution in the disk wake keeps self-similarity. The decay of a wake by the power law ?2/3 in the presented experiments remains until the maximum deficit of velocity becomes comparable with the turbulent pulsation level in the free-stream (less than 2 %).  相似文献

We use a simplified model of turbulent convection to compute analytically heat transport in a horizontal layer heated from below, as a function of the Rayleigh and the Prandtl number. At low Reynolds numbers, when most of the dissipation comes from the mean flow, we recover power classical scaling regimes of the Nusselt versus Rayleigh number, with exponent 1/3 or 1/4. At larger Reynolds number, velocity and temperature fluctuations become non-negligible in the dissipation. In these regimes, there is no exact power law dependence the Nusselt versus Rayleigh or Prandtl. Instead, we obtain logarithmic corrections to the classical soft (exponent 1/3) or ultra-hard (exponent 1/2) regimes, in a way consistent with the most accurate experimental measurements available nowadays. This sets a need for the search of new measurable quantities that are less prone to dimensional theories.  相似文献
