We present experimental results on eigenfunctions of a wave chaotic system in the continuous crossover regime between time-reversal symmetric and time-reversal symmetry-broken states. The statistical properties of the eigenfunctions of a two-dimensional microwave resonator are analyzed as a function of an experimentally determined time-reversal symmetry-breaking parameter. We test four theories of one-point eigenfunction statistics and introduce a new theory relating the one-point and two-point statistical properties in the crossover regime. We also find a universal correlation between the one-point and two-point statistical parameters for the crossover eigenfunctions.  相似文献

We present a comparative analysis of sequential versus hierarchical mechanisms of self-assembly in supramolecular architectures. The analysis is multifaceted, drawing on and inter-relating insights from a kinetic mean-field analysis and one based on the theory of finite Markov processes, complemented by Monte Carlo calculations. We give explicit results for two reaction pathways that are likely to dominate in early stages of self-assembly, and draw attention to experimental studies to which our results pertain: crystallization of zeolites from the bulk phase and aggregation of surface-supported supramolecular structures. Among the several conclusions that can be drawn from the theory and the simulations is a crossover from one mechanism to another, depending on the values of system parameters.  相似文献

We study the susceptible–infected–recovered (SIR) model in complex networks, considering that not all individuals in the population interact in the same way. This heterogeneity between contacts is modeled by a continuous disorder. In our model, the disorder represents the contact time or the closeness between individuals. We find that the duration time of an epidemic has a crossover with the system size, from a power-law regime to a logarithmic regime depending on the transmissibility related to the strength of the disorder. Using percolation theory, we find that the duration of the epidemic scales as the average length of the branches of the infection. Our theoretical findings, supported by simulations, explains the crossover between the two regimes.  相似文献

We have experimentally studied the distribution of the spatial extent of modes and the crossover from essentially single-mode to distinctly multimode behavior inside a porous gallium phosphide random laser. This system serves as a paragon for random lasers due to its exemplary high index contrast. In the multimode regime, we observed mode competition. We have measured the distribution of spectral mode spacings in our emission spectra and found level repulsion that is well described by the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random-matrix theory.  相似文献

The study of ecological systems has generated deep interest in exploring the complexity of chaotic food chains. The role of chaos in ecosystems is not entirely understood. One approach to have a better comprehension of ecological chaos is by analyzing it in mathematical models of basic food chains. In this article it is considered a classical chaotic food chain model from the literature. We use the theory of symbolic dynamics to study the topological entropy and the parameter space ordering of kneading sequences associated with one-dimensional maps that reproduce significant aspects of the model dynamics. The topological entropy allows us to distinguish different chaotic states in some realistic system parameter region. Another numerical invariant is introduced in order to characterize isentropic dynamics. Studying a set of maps with the same topological entropy, we exhibit numerical results about the relation between the second topological invariant and each of the control parameters in consideration. This work provides an illustration of how our understanding of ecological models can be enhanced by the theory of symbolic dynamics.  相似文献

We present a study on the dynamics of a system consisting of a pair of hardcore particles diffusing with different rates. We solved the drift-diffusion equation for this model in the case when one particle, labeled F, drifts and diffuses slowly toward the second particle, labeled M. The displacements of particle M exhibits a crossover from diffusion to drift at a characteristic time which depends on the rate constants. We show that the positional fluctuation of M exhibits an intermediate crossover regime of subdiffusion separating initial and asymptotic diffusive behavior; this is in agreement with the complete set of Master Equations that describe the stochastic evolution of the model. The intermediate crossover regime can be considerably large depending on the hopping probabilities of the two particles. This is in contrast to the known crossover from diffusive to subdiffusive behavior of a tagged particle that is in the interior of a large single-file system on an unbound real line. We discuss our model with respect to the biological phenomena of membrane protrusions, where polymerizing actin filaments (F) push the cell membrane (M).  相似文献

Specific heat versus temperature curves for various pressures, or magnetic fields (or some other external control parameter) have been seen to cross at a point or in a very small range of temperatures in many correlated fermion systems. We show that this behavior is related to the possibility of existence of a quantum critical point. Vicinity to a quantum critical point in these systems leads to a crossover from quantum to classical fluctuation regime at some temperature . The temperature at which the curves cross turns out to be near this crossover temperature. We have discussed the case of the normal phase of liquid Helium three and the heavy fermion systems CeAl3 and UBe13 in detail within the spin fluctuation theory, a theory which inherently contains a low energy scale which can be identified with . When the crossover scale is a homogeneous function of these control parameters there is always crossing at a point. We also mention other theories exhibiting a low energy scale near a quantum critical point and discuss this phenomenon in those theories. Received 25 June 1999  相似文献

We report on a mechanism of dynamic dipolar coupling in magnetic superlattices via long-wavelength nonevanescent fields. In the spin excitation spectra of our heterophase stripe structures, such interactions mediate a singlet<-->doublet crossover in the frequency regime driven by the orientation of an external static field. This crossover is a new feature observed in collective behavior of superlattices, though there is some analogy of this phenomenon with birefringence taking place in optical superlattices. We envision applying the collective effects described here in microwave photonic devices.  相似文献

We show that a finite Josephson junction (JJ) chain, ending with two bulk superconductors, and with a weak link at its center, may be regarded as a condensed matter realization of a two-boundary sine-Gordon model. Computing the partition function yields a remarkable analytic expression for the DC Josephson current as a function of the phase difference across the chain. We show that, in a suitable range of the chain parameters, there is a crossover of the DC Josephson current from a sinusoidal to a sawtooth behavior, which signals a transition from a regime where the boundary term is an irrelevant operator to a regime where it becomes relevant.  相似文献

Marginal Fermi-liquid physics near optimal doping in high T(c) cuprates has been explained within two competing scenarios such as the spin-fluctuation theory based on an itinerant picture and the slave-particle approach based on a localized picture. In this study we propose an alternative scenario for the anomalous transport within the context of the slave-particle approach. Although the marginal Fermi-liquid phenomenology was interpreted previously within deconfinement of the compact gauge theory, referred to as the strange metal phase, we start from confinement, introducing the Polyakov loop parameter into an SU(2) gauge theory formulation of the t-J model. The Polyakov loop parameter gives rise to incoherent electrons through the confinement of spinons and holons, which result from huge imaginary parts of self-energy corrections for spinons and holons. This confinement scenario serves a novel mechanism for the marginal Fermi-liquid transport in the respect that the scattering source has nothing to do with symmetry breaking. Furthermore, the incoherent Fermi-liquid state evolves into the Fermi-liquid phase through crossover instead of an artificial second-order transition as temperature is lowered, where the crossover phenomenon does not result from the Anderson-Higgs mechanism but originates from an energy scale in the holon sector. We fit experimental data for the electrical resistivity around the optimal doping and find a reasonable match between our theory and the experiment.  相似文献

We generalize the nonlinear sigma model treatment of quantum spin chains to cases including ferromagnetic bonds. When these bonds are strong enough, the classical ground state is no longer the standard Néel order and we present an extension of the known formalism to deal with this situation. We study the alternating ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic spin chain introduced by Hida. The smooth crossover between decoupled dimers and the Haldane phase is semi-quantitatively reproduced. We study also a spin ladder with diagonal exchange couplings that interpolates between the gapped phase of the two-leg spin ladder and the Haldane phase. Here again we show that there is a good agreement between DMRG data and our analytical results. Received 6 September 1999  相似文献

Using mean-field theory for the Bardeen–Cooper–Schriefer (BCS) to the Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover we investigate the ground state thermodynamic properties of an interacting homogeneous Fermi gas. The interatomic interactions modelled through a finite range potential allows us to calculate the thermodynamic behaviour as a function of the potential parameters in the whole crossover region. We concentrate in studying the Contact variable, the thermodynamic conjugate of the inverse of the s-wave scattering length. Our analysis leads to predict a quantum phase transition – like in the case of large potential range. This finding is a direct consequence of the k-dependent energy gap.  相似文献

In this paper, polymer brushes are studied via molecular-dynamics simulations at very high grafting densities, where the crossover between the brush regime and the polymer-crystal regime is taking place. This crossover is directly observed with the structure factor and pair-correlation function. With increasing grafting density, this crystallization is progressing from the core layer of the brush towards the surface layer. The same process is analyzed using the lateral fluctuations of the monomers as a signature of their diminishing mobility. Additionally, bond forces and the chain excess free energy indicate a transition from the brush regime to the overstretched regime, which is in agreement with predictions of a modified self-consistent field theory.  相似文献

The crossover between low and high density regimes of exciton-polariton condensates is examined using a BCS wave-function approach. Our approach is an extension of the BEC-BCS crossover theory for excitons, but includes a cavity photon field. The approach can describe both the low density limit, where the system can be described as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of exciton-polaritons, and the high density limit, where the system enters a photon-dominated regime. In contrast to the exciton BEC-BCS crossover where the system approaches an electron-hole plasma, the polariton high density limit has strongly correlated electron-hole pairs. At intermediate densities, there is a regime with BCS-like properties, with a peak at nonzero momentum of the singlet pair function. We calculate the expected photoluminescence and give several experimental signatures of the crossover.  相似文献

We develop an effective medium approach to the mechanics of disordered, semiflexible polymer networks and study the response of such networks to uniform and nonuniform strain. We identify distinct elastic regimes in which the contributions of either filament bending or stretching to the macroscopic modulus vanish. We also show that our effective medium theory predicts a crossover between affine and nonaffine strain, consistent with both prior numerical studies and scaling theory.  相似文献

We study the finite-size scaling behavior of two-point correlation functions of translationally invariant many-body systems at criticality. We propose an efficient method for calculating the two-point correlation functions in the thermodynamic limit from numerical data of finite systems. Our method is most effective when applied to a two-dimensional (classical) system which possesses a conformal invariance. By using this method with numerical data obtained from exact diagonalizations and Monte Carlo simulations, we study the spin-spin correlations of the quantum spin-1/2 and-3/2 antifierromagnetic chains. In particular, the logarithmic corrections to power-law decay of the correlation of the spin-1/2 isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain are studied thoroughly. We clarify the cause of the discrepancy in previous calculations for the logarithmic corrections. Our result strongly supports the field-theoretic prediction based on the mappings to the Wess-Zumino-Witten nonlinear -model or the sine-Gordon model. We also treat logarithmic corrections and crossover phenomena in the spin-spin correlation of the spin-3/2 isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. Our results are consistent with the Affleck-Haldane prediction that the correlation of the spin-3/2 chain exhibits a crossover to the same asymptotic behavior as in the spin-1/2 chain.  相似文献

The crossover from the semiclassical transport to the quantum Hall effect is studied by examining a two-dimensional electron system in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. By probing the magneto-oscillations, it is shown that the semiclassical Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) formulation can be valid even when the minima of the longitudinal resistivity approach zero. The extension of the applicable range of the SdH theory could be due to the damping effects resulting from disorder and temperature. Moreover, we observed plateau-plateau transition-like behavior with such an extension. From our study, it is important to include positive magnetoresistance to refine the SdH theory.  相似文献

Dimensionality serves as an indispensable ingredient in any attempt to formulate low-dimensional physics, and studying the dimensional crossover at a fundamental level is challenging. The purpose of this work is to study the hierarchical dimensional crossovers, namely the crossover from three dimensions (3D) to quasi-2D and then to 1D. Our system consists of a 3D Bose–Einstein condensate trapped in an anisotropic 2D optical lattice characterized by the lattice depths V1 along the x direction and V2 along the y direction, respectively, where the hierarchical dimensional crossover is controlled via V1 and V2. We analytically derive the ground-state energy, quantum depletion and the superfluid density of the system. Our results demonstrate the 3D-quasi-2D-1D dimensional crossovers in the behavior of quantum fluctuations. Conditions for possible experimental realization of our scenario are also discussed.  相似文献
