The fundamental theoretical approach derived in A.V. Emelyanenko et al., Phys. Rev. E 74, 011705 (2006) is complemented by a consideration of the influence of the homogeneous electric field on Sm- C
A
* , biaxial intermediate phases, and Sm-C
* . The crucial role of the induced polarization is investigated for the first time. The evolution of any tilted smectic phase
in the electric field is found to meet the two thresholds. The first threshold corresponds to the unwinding process, and the
second one corresponds to the phase transition into the bi-domain structure of Sm-C
* , where the tilt plane has some contribution either along or against the electric field, while the average direction may
still be perpendicular to the electric field. The tilt plane in the monodomain (conventional) structure preceding the second
threshold is the same in every unwound phase, and is perpendicular to the electric field. No 3D distortion in Sm- C
A
* is predicted on application of the electric field. The entire electric-field-temperature phase diagrams including the possibility
of existence of the maximal number of tilted smectic phases are plotted and compared with the experimental ones. The numerical
calculations in the framework of this fundamental study are done with help of AFLC Phase Diagram Plotter software developed
by the author and available at his web page. 相似文献

Electrooptic phenomena caused by weak electric fields, much lower than those needed for the helix unwinding, in helical smectic
liquid crystals were studied in thin planar samples. The investigations were performed in chiral liquid crystal 4-(1-methyl-heptyloxycarbonyl)
phenyl 4′-(3-butanoyloxy propyl-1-oxy) biphenyl-4-carboxylate which exhibits antiferro-electric properties. We have found
that electric field applied to a helical smectic liquid crystal caused two effects. First, the helix was deformed and the
position of effective optic axis changed by an angle proportional to the field strength. The second effect, quadratic in field,
causes the change in the shape of the indicatrix. As a consequence, the relative changes in the light intensity caused by
external electric field consist of two components. The first component represents the modulation with the fundamental frequency
and the second one with the doubled frequency (second harmonic of the electrooptic effect). The ab- solute values of the first-
and second-order electrooptic coefficients have been determined and their temperature dependence discussed. 相似文献

The effects of temperature and applied voltage on the pyroelectric properties of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal are given. It has been found that the pyroelectric signal depends strongly on the bias voltage across the sample. The pyroelectric signal behaviour is interpreted with the aid of spontaneous polarization data and good agreement is found between the results from the pyroelectric and polarization techniques. The spontaneous polarization of the sample exhibits the temperature- and field-induced `Devil's staircase' behaviour, as predicted by the Ising model. 相似文献

In this work, the physical properties of newly synthesized liquid crystalline compound exhibiting two liquid crystalline phases (ferroelectric and antiferroelectric) were studied. Based on the results of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy, and photoelastic modulator methods, the temperature dependences of spontaneous polarization, tilt angle, switching time, and birefringence in the ferroelectric, as well as antiferroelectric phases were determined. Furthermore, the influence of the external electric field on the liquid crystalline textures was studied and the phase sequences at heating and cooling were revealed. The temperature dependence of spontaneous polarization was analysed by means of Landau mean-field theory, and the critical parameter β obtained for ferroelectric liquid crystalline and isotropic liquid transition was 0.21 which is close to 0.25, the value characteristic for tri-critical point. 相似文献

Lifshitz invariants emerging in the presence of external effects in a crystal are considered for 2D irreducible representations of the D4h class. It is shown that, for a 2D irreducible vector representation, the electric field exceeding a critical value leads to the formation of an incommensurate phase on the phase diagram. 相似文献

Asymmetric antiferroelectric liquid crystal displays (AAFLCD) are attractive since they show a very well defined off state
and fast switching time. Moreover, they can be driven by a simple biasless DC compensated waveform. The electrooptical response
of an AAFLCD allows for new addressing modes, including quasi-static intermediate greyscales maintained without applying a
field and passively addressed multiplexed high-frequency displays and spatial light modulators. A new kind of asymmetric cells
have been obtained by using fluorinated block copolymer (FBC) alignment, which enhances surface segregation and provides a
low energy surface. In this work we combine FBC alignment with antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures containing strongly
electronegative fluorinated components. Threshold voltages for the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition as low
as 3 volts are observed. We report the time evolution of the shift of the electro-optical response. 相似文献

We study pyroelectric and electromechanical effects in the prototype antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl-phenyl)4′-octylbiphenil-4-carboxylate (MHPOBC). The linear electromechanical effect in the freely suspended liquid crystal films of MHPOBC has been detected in the broad temperature range inclusive of the antiferroelectric SmC A * as well as paraelectric SmA. The anomalous behavior of the hysteresis loop of SmC β * in the (pyroelectric coefficient, dc bias electric voltage) coordinates has been found. 相似文献

Dielectric spectroscopy of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material (S)-4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl-4′-(6-pentanoyloxyhex-1-oxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate 4H6Bi(S) for its helical phases has been carried out under bias electric field in the frequency range 0.1 Hz-10 MHz. Bias field investigation has been carried out in order to explore new relaxation modes. Dielectric characterization of the material, when carried out as a function of DC bias, reveals soft mode around 350 kHz and domain mode at ∼100 Hz in the SmC? phase as a consequence of suppression of Goldstone mode due to helix unwinding. In the SmC?A phase a field induced new relaxation mode has been investigated at 8.0 kV/cm having relaxation frequency from 100 Hz to 600 Hz with increasing bias electric field. 相似文献

Thin free-standing films of a compound with the smectic-C A * and smectic-C α * phases were investigated by means of depolarized microscopy and optical reflectivity. In thin films, the smectic phase sequence C A * ?Cα/*?A is replaced by a series of temperature-and field-induced transitions into states with the coplanar orientation of molecular tilt planes. Transitions are accompanied by a change in the direction of the electric polarization with respect to the tilt plane of molecules. The coplanar structure of these states is consistent with the Ising model. 相似文献

Orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLCs) having 45° tilt angle have been proposed to overcome the problem of reduced
contrast usually exhibited by regular antiferroelectric displays. However, the pitch of the helix induced by chirality is
customarily short in existing orthoconic materials, making it difficult to achieve surface stabilized configurations when
the material’s pitch is smaller than the cell thickness.
In this work, the influence of different manufacturing procedures on the electrooptical behaviour of orthoconic AFLCs is studied.
Using the same orthoconic AFLC mixture, aligning surfaces and manufacturing protocol, we have observed two dissimilar responses,
true orthoconic behaviour, and orthoconic V-shape response. The electrooptical response depends ultimately on the rubbing
strategy adopted in either case. 相似文献

The premises of a discrete mean-field model for polar smectic liquid crystals are tested by analyzing the ellipsometric experiments on two, three, and four-layer freestanding films of MHPOBC. The measured temperature dependences of the ellipsometric parameters in a weak dc external field are compared to the predictions of a simple clock model. A very good quantitative agreement is found indicating an odd-even effect: XY structures are stable for odd and Ising-like structures for an even number of layers. 相似文献

The soliton structure in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal in an electric field is calculated in the discrete phenomenological Landau model for phase transitions. The anticlinic structure of the antiferroelectric crystal gives rise to nontrivial features of the soliton structure and the stability of the soliton. The soliton is topologically stable in a metastable state if the electric field is much higher than the field of antiferroelectric-helix unwinding. A structural transition with a step-like change in the orientation of molecules occurs as the soliton field varies. A peculiar soliton (synclinic pair) can be formed if the barrier between the anti- and ferroelectric structures is large. The calculation shows the possibility of a large electroclinic effect in the soliton, i.e., a variation in the molecular tilt angle in an electric field in the vicinity of the transition of the structure to the synclinic state. 相似文献

We propose complements to the Renn model of the liquid crystal TGBC* phase. We argue that the rotation angle per helislab is spontaneously in the radian range, not too small to limit the energy
cost of the twist grain boundaries between the helislabs, not too large to preserve the double twisting efficiency. Taking
the elastic interactions between the helislabs into account, we show that the structure may undergo two different lock-ins,
provided that the uncontrolled interactions at the sample surfaces are small enough. First, for appropriate values of the
elastic constants, an angular lock-in may fix the rotation angle per helislab at values exactly commensurate to π. Three characteristic
lengths of the TGBC* phase, the TGB period and the thicknesses of both the smectic blocks and of the helislabs are then commensurate to one another,
with moreover, integer ratios at the most efficient commensurabilities. The TGBC* phase could thus exist in several versions, incommensurate and commensurate, according to the steps of a restricted Devil's
staircase. A second elastic lock-in should then arise in the commensurate TGBC* phases, to set the arrays of disclination lines between the helislabs in simple rectangular lattices, arranged in a helical
manner. Being placed right behind one another, the disclination lines then coincide when observed along the TGB axis. This
could explain the typical textures with square or hexagonal grids, observed in oriented samples. The commensurability of the
TGBC* phases could be analyzed with X-ray scattering experiments in the same manner as already reported for the TGBC phase.

Thin freely suspended films of a mixture of an achiral side-chain liquid crystal polymer and its monomer have been studied with depolarized reflected light microscopy. We observe that regions with an odd number of bilayers exhibit a net spontaneous polarization in the tilt plane of the molecules, while regions with an even number of bilayers have no net polarization. These odd-even effects are direct evidence that the tilted smectic bilayers are anticlinic at the polymer backbone and synclinic at bilayer interface and confirm that the phase is bilayer-by-bilayer antiferroelectric. 相似文献

We report X-ray diffraction experiments performed on an antiferroelectric compound exhibiting a very rich polymorphism (). The structural study of the unknown phases only allows us to exclude some phenomenological models. The use of oriented
planar samples prepared between solid glass plates generate by cooling from the phase a chevron structure of tilted layers already well characterized for the phase. The extensive analysis of the evolution of the chevron structure through the numerous smectic-smectic phase transitions
provides some original information in three distinct areas: fundamental data on the important physical parameters in the chevron
structure formation, detection of the smectic-smectic phases transition by small change of the chevron structure, and information
on the local molecular order induced by the alignment layer (interaction with a rubbed polymer).

We have experimentally studied for the first time the electro-optical Kerr effect and the pre-transitional behavior in the isotropic phase of two antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures, W-232 and W-204D, composed of rod-like ester molecules exhibiting the direct smectic-A to isotropic (SmA-I) phase transition. The Kerr law has been confirmed for the two compounds and the variation of inverse Kerr constant with temperature above the smectic–isotropic transition temperatures were determined. Both the mixtures with very broad antiferroelectric phase around room temperature have similar sequence of the phases (i.e., Cr-SmC*A-SmC*-SmA-I). Although, the pre-transitional behavior is usually complex in the isotropic phase of the chiral smectic liquid crystal compounds, the investigated compounds showed a similar behavior compared to that of nematic–isotropic behavior. 相似文献

The free energy of antiferroelectric smectic liquid crystals which takes into account polar order explicitly is presented. Steric, van der Waals, piezoelectric, and flexoelectric interactions to the nearest layers, and dipolar electrostatic interactions to the nearest and to the next-nearest layers, induce indirect tilt interactions with chiral and achiral properties, which extend to the third- and to the fourth-nearest layers. Although the strength of microscopic interactions changes monotonically with decreasing temperature, the effective interlayer interactions change nonmonotonically and give rise to a nonmonotonic change of the modulation period through various phases. Increased chirality changes the phase sequence. 相似文献
